Possibilities And Challenges Of Teaching Integrated Math And Social Studies For Social Justice: Two Teacher Educators' Collaborative Self-Study, Paula P. Guerra, Sohyun An
Georgia Educational Researcher
In this paper, we—one mathematics teacher educator and one social studies teacher educator—describe a project where we collaborated to model teaching integrated mathematics and social studies for social justice in our methods courses. We encountered varied challenges in our efforts to prepare teacher candidates for social-justice-oriented lessons. These challenges included teacher candidates’ perception of authority/credibility of their professors who were foreign females from the “Third World”, teacher candidates’ deficit views on minoritized students, and the limited time and resources for teacher collaboration in teacher education. Despite these challenges, we believe this kind of project is necessary to move forward in …

Reform of the U.S. international income taxation system has been a hotly debated topic for many years. The principal competing alternatives are a territorial or exemption system and a worldwide system. For reasons summarized in this article, we favor worldwide taxation if it is real worldwide taxation – i.e., a non-deferred U.S. tax is imposed on all foreign income of U.S. residents at the time the income in earned. This approach is not acceptable, however, unless the resulting double taxation is alleviated. The longstanding U.S. approach for handling the international double taxation problem is a foreign tax credit limited to …

Closing The Achievement Gap In Mathematics For Students With Learning Disabilities Utilizing The Resource Room As An Intervention, Esta H. Brownstein
Theses and Dissertations
Students with learning disabilities are placed in general education classrooms in increasing numbers. Many of these students receive additional services in Resource Room programs taught by a special education teacher. The intent of this study was to determine if students with disabilities, who were struggling in mathematics, increased achievement utilizing Resource Room instruction as an intervention. Students in the study were in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades and performed at least one grade level below expectations for that grade in mathematics. All of the students had a specific learning disability. This study investigated the correlation, if any, between the amounts …

School of Nursing and Midwifery
Internationalisation via partnerships and collaboration appears to be the way forward in western higher education and is also developing fast in Asian countries. One growing area of collaboration is part-time Transnational Higher Education (TNHE) courses where western ‘flying faculty’ academics from ‘exporter’ universities in, for example, the UK or Australia, ‘fly in’ to the Eastern ‘importer’ country to deliver teaching, and then ‘fly back’ to their country and their role in their university after one or two weeks of intense teaching. Such western higher education institutions collaborate mainly with Asian countries where strong cultural factors continue to affect local society. …

“Not Just The Ideas Of A Few Enthusiasts”: Early Twentieth Century Legal Activism And Reformation Of The Age Of Sexual Consent, Ka Stevenson
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
In July 1885, a reluctant House of Lords was eventually persuaded to pass the Criminal Law Amendment Bill after three years of intense Parliamentary debate and prompted by W.T. Stead’s shocking expose of the Maiden Tribute scandal. The 1885 Act finally, and controversially, settled the age of sexual protection for young girls at 16 years but this threshold would be repeatedly contested over the next four decades. Moral campaigners continually sought to exert pressure on the Home Office to reform what we now recognise as a legal age of consent. But their contradictory demands to impose repressionist measures to punish …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent studies of flood risk at New York Harbor (NYH) have shown disparate results for the 100 year storm tide, providing an uncertain foundation for the flood mitigation response after Hurricane Sandy. Here we present a flood hazard assessment that improves confidence in our understanding of the region's present-day potential for flooding, by separately including the contribution of tropical cyclones (TCs) and extratropical cyclones (ETCs), and validating our modeling study at multiple stages against historical observations. The TC assessment is based on a climatology of 606 synthetic storms developed from a statistical-stochastic model of North Atlantic TCs. The ETC assessment …

Streptococcus Pneumoniae Intracranial Abscess And Post-Infectious Vasculitis, Alexandra Lucas, Ko Ko Maung, Ryan Ratts
Dartmouth Scholarship
Intracranial abscesses are rare complications of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections, and to our knowledge, there have been no case reports of post-infectious vasculitis developing in such patients. Here we describe the case of a 48-year-old post-splenectomy male who developed post-infectious vasculitis following S. pneumoniae otitis media complicated by mastoiditis, osteomyelitis, meningitis, and intracranial abscess. Clinicians ought to be aware of the possible adverse outcomes of invasive S. pneumoniae and the limitations of current treatment options.

The Impact Of Teacher-Lead Professional Development Programs On The Self-Efficacy Of Veteran Teachers, Seth Powers, Theodore Kaniuka, Brian Phillips, Beverlyn Cain
Journal of Research Initiatives
This study examined the impact of a teacher-lead professional development program based on the Instructional Talk-Through (ITT) model, created to address the unique needs of high-performing veteran teachers. Focusing on the professional development of veteran teachers is not a regular occurrence in schools and it is our opinion that these teachers possess a wealth of knowledge that heretofore has not been utilized to improve their overall skill set. The program was designed to capitalize on peer coaching, professional learning communities, classroom observation, and experiential knowledge while incorporating the unique strengths and abilities of these teachers in a collaborative environment.

A Qualitative Study Of Gender Issues Associated With Academic Mentoring In A Nigerian University., Oghoadena Clementina Osezua Dr
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
There is an upsurge in the establishment of private and public universities in Nigeria. The development has opened up the need for quality and seasoned academics, but minimal opportunities exist for mentoring of young academics. This article explores the mentoring opportunities and challenges of young female academics faced in a male dominant university system. From an exploratory qualitative design, this article generates empirical evidence through structured a face-to-face interview with purposively selected 36 female academics. The participants were recruited from the Obafemi Awolowo University, a first-generation, public-owned university in Nigeria. A thematic analysis of the data revealed common challenges in …

Journal of Family Strengths
Abstract
The Zapatista uprising, rebellion, and ongoing attempts to create a new way of life inside Mexico is unique. While Zapatistas have purposely isolated themselves from the Mexican government, they are not isolated from surrounding communities. Zapatista influences can be seen in the practices and organization of cooperatives and in the altered role of indigenous women in the surrounding communities. This study focuses on four cooperatives: one located in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico, and the others in rural surrounding areas. The selected collectives produce traditional artisan work, basic food staples, natural personal care products, …

Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Chicago-Kent Journal of International and Comparative Law
There are strong analogies between the quest for a methodology of comparative law and the broader debate on the epistemology of social and natural sciences. In this vein, after having explored the dispute between holists and reductionists, I argue that the dichotomy between micro and macro comparative law ought to be abandoned. Building on the insights of social theory, I introduce a specific framework to bridge the two levels of enquiry through a meso analysis. This framework is applied to investigate the robustness of the findings of the legal origin theory.
Writer's Diary As A Specific Subgenre Of Diary In The Context Of Russian Literature, Lenka Paučová
Writer's Diary As A Specific Subgenre Of Diary In The Context Of Russian Literature, Lenka Paučová
Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Litteraria Rossica
The present paper is dedicated to the most subjective of autobiographical genres, to the genre of diary. The author deals with the definition of the term ‘diary’ and also with the main types within the genre in the literary-theoretical tradition of Slavonic and non-Slavonic countries. Among the types of diary, the author focuses on a special subgenre, the so-called writer’s diary, and defines its dominant and variable features. The writer’s diary is analyzed from different points of view (e.g. orientation, intended publication, topics), which leads to distinguishing its varieties (e.g. journalistic, business, poetic, journey diary). Although the author deals primarily …

Epstein's 'Metabole' And Kedrov's 'Metametaphor' As A Poetic-Artistic Revision Of Metaphor: About Two Key Terms Of Metarealism, Edyta Fedorushkov
Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Litteraria Rossica
The aim of the paper is to describe two key terms of metarealism (a literary movement in the Russian poetry of the 1980s), namely ‘metabole’ and ‘metametaphor’. These concepts reevaluate the concept of metaphor and at the same time become the essential poetic-artistic idea of metarealism. The paper outlines their mechanism of action, on basis of the manifestos written by the authors of the terms – Mikhail Epstein and Konstantin Kedrov respectively. The analysis of the multilevel functioning of ‘metabole’ and ‘metametaphor’ in a poem allows the author to reach the conclusion that the two figures form a new type …

Neighborhoods with generational Mexican American populations may have high levels of block Social Cohesion and neighborhood Sense of Community. Streetcar-focused development via federal and local investment often spurs gentrification in neighborhoods with ethnic concentrations, which shifts neighborhood demographics towards more White and higher income households. The new residential and business investment in the neighborhood often has an impact on existing neighborhood social dynamics. This study includes mixed methods resident survey data of long term and newer residents. The qualitative data analysis informs quantitative data analysis in order to better understand resident descriptions of the impact of neighborhood streetcar focused gentrification …
