Rural Life & Engagement: Public Views From Minnesota County Fairs, Roger P. Rose, Tim Lindberg Oct 2016

Rural Life & Engagement: Public Views From Minnesota County Fairs, Roger P. Rose, Tim Lindberg

Center for Small Towns

This report discusses the outcome of a pilot survey of six rural county fairs and whether the county fair venue could serve as a location for conducting an annual, low-cost survey of rural Minnesota residents. The report outlines the primary findings, which show the relatively positive outlook and high level of civic engagement of survey takers, and then discusses the challenges of sampling at county fair venues. It concludes that county fairs present too many obstacles to permit representative sampling of these areas.

A “Second Magna Carta”: The English Habeas Corpus Act And The Statutory Origins Of The Habeas Privilege, Amanda L. Tyler Oct 2016

A “Second Magna Carta”: The English Habeas Corpus Act And The Statutory Origins Of The Habeas Privilege, Amanda L. Tyler

Notre Dame Law Review

In my own scholarship, Fallon and Meltzer’s work on habeas models prompted me to dig deeper into the historical backdrop that informed ratification of the Suspension Clause and think harder about the relevance of that history for questions of constitutional interpretation. This, in turn, has spurred work that has occupied me for many years since. In the spirit of engaging with my federal courts professor one more time, this Article tells the story of the statutory origins of the habeas privilege—what Blackstone called a “second magna carta”—and argues that any explication of the constitutional privilege and discussion of how …

Enhancing Planning And Preparedness Capacities For Climate Change Resilience In Wawa, Ontario: A Community-Based Photovoice Approach, Samantha Russo

Geography and Environmental Studies Major Research Papers

The integration of local community and Indigenous Knowledge in disaster planning and management has the potential to increase resilience in rural and Aboriginal communities across Ontario. Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Preparedness And Resilience Intergovernmental Pilot Project. Phase 2 Report: Recommendations, Accomplishments And Lessons Learned, Emily E. Steinhilber, Maura Boswell, Carol Considine, Larry Mast

Hampton Roads Intergovernmental Pilot Project: Reports

Executive Summary

After two years, the Hampton Roads Sea level Rise and Resilience Intergovernmental Planning Pilot Project (Intergovernmental Pilot Project or IPP), convened at Old Dominion University, has come to a successful close. Although the conclusion of the project is different than originally imagined by the drafters of the IPP Charter, the process in and of itself brought hundreds of stakeholders together, built lasting and ongoing relationships, and produced many workable recommendations for the region that can be accomplished by a variety of partnerships. The key deliverables include a whole of government mitigation and adaptation planning process and an integrated …

How To No Shame: A Self-Starting Manual For Creating And Maintaining A No Shame Theatre, Todd Ristau, Jeff Goode

Theatre Faculty Scholarship

Anywhere there is light enough to read a script and space enough for an audience to gather, No Shame can happen. The first No Shame was done from the back of a pick up truck in a parking lot because no “real” theatre would have us. After weeks of performing in the rain and snow, the University of Iowa theatre department decided not to let us die of exposure and invited us inside, where we’ve been a forum for new work for almost twenty years. No Shame can happen anywhere, but this book is geared toward helping you set up …

Gross Error, Eric Berger Oct 2016

Gross Error, Eric Berger

Washington Law Review

Glossip v. Gross epitomizes judicial deference gone berserk. In rejecting an Eighth Amendment challenge to Oklahoma’s lethal injection protocol, the United States Supreme Court rested its holding on several forms of deference. Closer examination demonstrates that each of these unsupported deference determinations was, at best, contestable and, at worst, simply wrong. Far from being anomalous, such under-theorized deference reflects more generally the Court’s willingness to utilize various stealth determinations to manipulate outcomes in constitutional cases. The understandable concern that frivolous lethal injection challenges will clog courts and delay executions likely motivated the Court’s approach. Remarkably, though, the Court did not …

The Commercialization Of Incarceration In The Land Of The Free, Christian Chaille Oct 2016

The Commercialization Of Incarceration In The Land Of The Free, Christian Chaille

The Diana McDonald Writer's Challenge

As in slavery, where people profited by the captivity and dehumanization of others, this essay argues that the privatization of prisons is somewhat of an extension of this willingness to disregard the rights and humanity of others for the sake of maximizing profit. It argues that the profit motive serves as incentive to lock up far more people than we should and in far worse prison conditions.

Restoring Capacity In Compromised Glued Laminated Beams, Cole Moller Oct 2016

Restoring Capacity In Compromised Glued Laminated Beams, Cole Moller

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

After structural fires are extinguished, presuming the structure is not a total loss, structural wood members can be inspected for residual properties. Through this research, we explored alternative methods aimed at keeping structurally compromised wood member’s in service when they would otherwise warrant replacement. For this study, we used 24F-V8 DF/DF glued laminated beams that had been loaded to their max capacity; both non-fire damaged and fire damaged. In situations where physical and mechanical changes occur, and the beam warrants individual replacement, a new restoration procedure could be used to salvage the member. Salvaging the member could mean to keep …

Statistics For Middle And High School Teachers: A Resource For Middle And High School Teachers To Feel Better Prepared To Teach The Common Core State Standards (Ccss) Relating To Statistics, Nanci Kopecky

All Capstone Projects

The purpose of this project is to create a two-day workshop to better prepare middle and high school teachers to teach probability and statistics as required by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which have broadened the mathematics curriculum to include in depth understanding of probability and statistics. Many teachers are not prepared to address probability and statistics concepts. Research has demonstrated a need for greater professional development and resources for teachers in this area. The two-day workshop will allow teachers to review their knowledge and enhance their understanding of statistics by emphasizing student-centered teaching examples. Technology and/or software will …
