The Alleged “Ferguson Effect” And Police Willingness To Engage In Community Partnership, Scott E. Wolfe, Justin Nix
The Alleged “Ferguson Effect” And Police Willingness To Engage In Community Partnership, Scott E. Wolfe, Justin Nix
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
In response to increasing violent crime rates in several U.S. cities over the past year, some have pointed the finger of blame at de-policing, a result of the so-called “Ferguson Effect.” Although the Ferguson Effect on crime rates remains an open question, there may also be a Ferguson Effect on other aspects of police officers’ jobs, such as willingness to partner with community members. This study used data from a cross-sectional survey of 567 deputies at an agency in the southeastern U.S. to accomplish 2 objectives: (a) to determine whether the Ferguson Effect is associated with de-policing in the form …

Expectancy-Value In The Enrollment Factor Of Agricultural Education Youth, Morgan Schafbuch
Expectancy-Value In The Enrollment Factor Of Agricultural Education Youth, Morgan Schafbuch
Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development
This quantitative study considers the motivating factors for enrollment in secondary agricultural education courses from students whose home background is not from a farm. This study utilizes expectancy-value theory, and looks at students (n=211) from different agricultural backgrounds and the impact on their ability beliefs, expectancies for success, and usefulness, importance, and interest for enrollment in agricultural education courses. The results indicate that students who have no affiliation to a farm have the highest ability beliefs and expectancies for success towards agricultural education in relation to students who are from traditional agricultural backgrounds.

Evaluating Wrong-Way Driving For Florida Interstates And Toll Road Facilities: A Risk-Based Investigation, And Countermeasure Development, John Rogers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation was to examine wrong-way driving (WWD) events on Florida toll roads and Interstates. The universe of WWD data contains many sources of WWD events or incidents. Most of the previous research focused only on WWD crashes without considering other data such as WWD citations and 911 calls related to WWD incidents. While WWD citations and 911 calls data is abundant, this data has been largely overlooked in other studies. This dissertation provides a novel and holistic approach for evaluating WWD risk, which considers other risk factors such as WWD citations and 911 calls in addition …
Police Action And The State-Created Danger Doctrine: A Proposed Uniform Test, Christopher M. Eisenhauer
Police Action And The State-Created Danger Doctrine: A Proposed Uniform Test, Christopher M. Eisenhauer
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
The state-created danger doctrine provides the basis for a potential claim when a state actor creates a danger that results in an injury to the plaintiff. The doctrine may be interpreted as an exception to the general rule that a state has no duty to protect one private citizen from another. Because the U.S. Supreme Court has not addressed the issue, many variations of the state-created danger doctrine exist across the federal circuits. The resulting lack of uniformity has led to inconsistent results, promoting unfairness for litigants throughout the country.
This Comment explores the history, objectives, and current approaches to …
