Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was threefold. First, this study compared the effects of two different simulation-based instructional strategies on athletic trainers’ clinical competence in performing cardiovascular screening with cardiac auscultations. Second, this study identified the athletic trainers’ perceptions of learning through simulation-based instructional strategies. Third, this study attempted to identify and offer instructional recommendations based on the outcomes. The quantitative phase analyzed cognitive and diagnostic reasoning knowledge and history-taking and clinical skills specific to cardiovascular screenings with cardiac auscultations as it was taught to athletic trainers (ATs) at a continuing professional education (CPE) course. The …
Sparse Coding And Compressed Sensing: Locally Competitive Algorithms And Random Projections, William E. Hahn
Sparse Coding And Compressed Sensing: Locally Competitive Algorithms And Random Projections, William E. Hahn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
For an 8-bit grayscale image patch of size n x n, the number of distinguishable signals is 256(n2). Natural images (e.g.,photographs of a natural scene) comprise a very small subset of these possible signals. Traditional image and video processing relies on band-limited or low-pass signal models. In contrast, we will explore the observation that most signals of interest are sparse, i.e. in a particular basis most of the expansion coefficients will be zero. Recent developments in sparse modeling and L1 optimization have allowed for extraordinary applications such as the single pixel camera, as well as computer vision systems that can …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this non-experimental study was to determine whether teacher cognitive and behavioral agility relates to student achievement as measured by their value-added model (VAM) score and their performance evaluation measured through the Marzano instructional practice (IP) framework, and whether that relationship is moderated by contextual variables. Cognitive agility, measured through the Strategic Thinking Questionnaire for Teachers (STQ T TM), refers to the leader’s ability to use their repertoire of thinking skills. Behavioral agility, measured with the Strategic Leadership Questionnaire for Teachers (SLQ T TM), relates to the leader’s ability to use a wide array of leader influencing actions. …
Teacher Expertise In Motion: A Theory Of The Synergistic Gears That Shape And Sustain Teacher Expertise, Christine N. Rodriguez
Teacher Expertise In Motion: A Theory Of The Synergistic Gears That Shape And Sustain Teacher Expertise, Christine N. Rodriguez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study explored the factors expert teachers reported as influences in the development and sustainment of their expertise as well as those that challenge it. Through one-on-one interviews with 15 expert teachers, the generated data were scrutinized using a grounded theory approach. The analysis protocol followed a multi-step process of three stages – exploration, amalgamation, and conceptualization. In each of those stages, the data were examined using a cyclical and recursive process of investigation-interpretationintegration- illustration. By the completion of the conceptualization stage, a theory was developed to describe the interdependence of the four influential factors that shape and sustain teacher …

Trauma And Telling: Examining The Intergenerational Transmission Of Trauma Through Silence, Jennifer Murray
Trauma And Telling: Examining The Intergenerational Transmission Of Trauma Through Silence, Jennifer Murray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In recent decades there has been a great deal of scholarly and scientific work examining both the impact and the transmission of trauma. The focus of this thesis is the transmission of the trauma of genocide and large-scale historical traumas, specifically that seen in the Holocaust and the missionization of the California Indians in the 18th century. Through the analysis of the autobiographical narratives composed by three generations of Holocaust survivors, as well as one composed by a later generation descendant of the California Mission Indians, I argue that silence is not only a manifestation of trauma but also a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study seeks to explore longitudinally the changing behaviors and meanings of the symbols bound to family creation, size and unity in order to understand why and how they changed. The research method fuses historical facts collected from historical literature, the data from the participant’s interviews, and the ethnology of the American family made by David Schneider (1980), using symbolic anthropology as the guiding theoretical framework. The imposed gender differentiation, religious precepts, the shifting economic models, economic recessions, World War I and World War II, intellectual and technological developments, and the ideologies accompanying these events caused changes of human behavior …
Traveling Waves Of Dominance In Motion-Induced Blindness, Dustin Cox
Traveling Waves Of Dominance In Motion-Induced Blindness, Dustin Cox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In the present study, it was examined whether the spatiotemporal dynamics of transitions towards target dominance in motion-induced blindness (MIB) were wave-like, similar to those in binocular rivalry. The spatiotemporal dynamics of transitions towards dominance in MIB were further compared with those in binocular rivalry to reveal a potential neural locus of MIB. Across a series of experiments, the relationship between target length, stimulus structure, presentation location and the latency for circular arc segment-shaped targets to reappear was examined, respectively. It was found that target reappearance durations increase with target length, as if they reappear in a gradual, wavelike fashion. …

Was I Ready? The Perceptions Of Preparedness Of New Student Affairs Professionals Who Served As Graduate Assistants, Lisa A Samuda Byard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
According to higher education preparation standards, students who complete master’s preparation programs in student affairs should not only be acquiring skills and knowledge, they should be socialized into the field of student affairs Master’s level preparation programs in college student personnel or higher education leadership are often coupled with a graduate assistantship so that students are able to obtain valuable theory-to-practice experience This additional experience becomes complementary to the work the graduate student is doing in the classroom and thus becomes a practical learning opportunity After completing a preparation program, a former master’s student will most likely move into an …
Verb Memory And Text Comprehension, Lamiya Khan
Verb Memory And Text Comprehension, Lamiya Khan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Kersten, Earles, and Berger (2015) reported a distinction between two kinds of motion representations. Extrinsic motions involve the path of a person or object, with respect to an external frame of reference. Intrinsic motions involve the manner in which the various parts of a person or object move. They found that intrinsic motions are encoded and remembered with the corresponding actor performing the motions in a unitized memory representation. Extrinsic motions are encoded as separate memory representations, making them more difficult to accurately associate with the correct actor. In the proposed experiment, I will examine the generality of this distinction …
Women’S Plasticity During Childhood And Their Influence On Rape-Avoidance Behaviors, Sammy Penaloza
Women’S Plasticity During Childhood And Their Influence On Rape-Avoidance Behaviors, Sammy Penaloza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Evolutionary theory predicts that sexual coercion and rape are likely to occur in any species in which males are more aggressive, more eager to mate, more sexually assertive, and less discriminating in choosing a mate (Thornhill & Palmer, 2000). McKibbin and Shackelford (2011) state that males of many species have evolved strategies to sexually coerce and rape females. It is for this reason that researchers have speculated that several female traits or behaviors evolved to reduce the risks of being raped (McKibbin & Shackelford, 2011). The rationale behind the proposed experiment examined whether parents’ childrearing practices and women’s plasticity during …
Creating A Religious Divide: Journeys Through Hell In British And American Science Fiction, Advitiya Sachdev
Creating A Religious Divide: Journeys Through Hell In British And American Science Fiction, Advitiya Sachdev
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Science fiction, like any other genre, is sub-divided into categories. Yet scholars in the field have long debated the existence of multiple, regional sf genres. The most critiqued of these classifications is between sf produced in Britain, and America. Though Britain remains the birthplace of sf, American author have undoubtedly left a mark on the genre. Scholars mark this difference in the writing styles and themes of authors in these regions. To examine this difference, I analyze two authors that have worked on a common theme: religion and in particular, the concept of hell. Evaluating the arguments put forth by …

After a second training session, participants completed a generalization task during which they were required to identify the verbs when presented with seven novel creatures of varying levels of complexity. Performance was compared across age group and condition. Participants who initially learned the verbs in the context of a single, simple exemplar demonstrated a higher proportion of correct responses than participants who initially learned the …
Context-Based Image Concept Detection And Annotation, Esfandiar Zolghadr
Context-Based Image Concept Detection And Annotation, Esfandiar Zolghadr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Scene understanding attempts to produce a textual description of visible and latent concepts in an image to describe the real meaning of the scene. Concepts are either objects, events or relations depicted in an image. To recognize concepts, the decision of object detection algorithm must be further enhanced from visual similarity to semantical compatibility. Semantically relevant concepts convey the most consistent meaning of the scene. Object detectors analyze visual properties (e.g., pixel intensities, texture, color gradient) of sub-regions of an image to identify objects. The initially assigned objects names must be further examined to ensure they are compatible with each …
Daily Feedback Of Self-Concept Clarity And Grit, Alexander E. Wong
Daily Feedback Of Self-Concept Clarity And Grit, Alexander E. Wong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Self-concept clarity and grit are important constructs in the self-concept and selfregulation domains. Though distinct in their focus on identity and goal processes, self-concept clarity and grit similarly emphasize the extent to which self-views and goal-perseverance are strong, clear, consistent, and unshakeable. We hypothesized self-knowledge and goalperseverance may be mutually reinforcing given the role of self-knowledge in directing goal pursuit, and of goal pursuit in structuring the self-concept. The present study tested this hypothesis in the form of whether self-concept clarity and grit reciprocally influence one other across time, and was conducted using a daily diary design with 97 college-aged …
Demonstration Motivation Encourages Aggressive Reactions To Peer Rejection And Victimization, Christopher D. Aults
Demonstration Motivation Encourages Aggressive Reactions To Peer Rejection And Victimization, Christopher D. Aults
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Some, but not all, children who experience rejection or victimization by peers develop aggressive habits in response. This dissertation study tested the hypothesis that children who possess demonstration self-guides—cognitive structures that motivate a child to display behaviors and attributes that bring attention, admiration, or subservience from peers—are particularly at risk for such aggressive reactions. Children with such self-guides, it is suggested, experience adverse treatment by peers as particularly frustrating, humiliating, and shameful, and these reactions increase the children’s threshold for exhibiting aggression during peer interactions. Participants were 195 children in the fourth through seventh grades of a school serving an …

Culturally Tailoring A Substance Use Intervention Among Southeastern Urban American Indian And Alaska Native Youth, Rose M. Wimbish-Cirilo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In the United States, post European-colonial influence and exposure to substances such as alcohol historically mark the beginning of substance use exposure and involvement among all American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. Research findings indicate there are strong interrelationships between the origin and prevalence of substance use and U.S.-European colonization, historical trauma, forced assimilation, cultural losses, and relocation among urban AI/AN people (Burt, 1986; Clinton, Chadwick, & Bahr, 1975; Yuan et al., 2010). In an historical sense, the unsuccessful attempts of relocating AI/AN people to urban areas place the future generations of urban AI/AN youth at risk for substance …

Determining The Effectiveness Of Human Interaction In Human-In-The-Loop Systems By Using Mental States, Eric Lloyd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A self-adaptive software is developed to predict the stock market. It’s Stock Prediction Engine functions autonomously when its skill-set suffices to achieve its goal, and it includes human-in-the-loop when it recognizes conditions benefiting from more complex, expert human intervention. Key to the system is a module that decides of human participation. It works by monitoring three mental states unobtrusively and in real time with Electroencephalography (EEG). The mental states are drawn from the Opportunity-Willingness-Capability (OWC) model. This research demonstrates that the three mental states are predictive of whether the Human Computer Interaction System functions better autonomously (human with low scores …

The study examines the potential threat to an auditor’s independence in fact which may result from the extraordinarily favorable personal reputation (superstar status) of an audit client’s CEO This potential threat to an auditors’ independence is the result of a halo effect bias which can distort an individual’s judgment and behavior Accounting firms use a business risk audit approach which involves conducting a strategic risk assessment which assesses the overall threats to the business model of an audit client Prior research has demonstrated that the strategic risk assessment can bias the judgment of auditors pertaining to financial account level risk …
Early Childhood Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge Of Children’Scognitive Development And Developmentally Appropriatepedagogical Practices: Understanding The Role Of Clinicalexperiences, Courtney Beers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The quality of early caregiving and educational environments has a significant effect on children’s later cognitive outcomes. Early childhood teachers are an important determining factor in the quality of these environments. Due to inconsistencies in practice across the early childhood field, there is a call for better prepared teachers. Teacher preparation itself is criticized for its lack of innovative and effective practices. While research finds that more effective teacher preparation programs are those that are steeped in clinical practice, these types of experiences are inconsistent and fragmented in the early childhood field. Part of the issue is the lack of …
