Strategies To Mitigate Nurse Turnover In Eastern And Northern Virginia, Fred E. Echoles
Strategies To Mitigate Nurse Turnover In Eastern And Northern Virginia, Fred E. Echoles
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Registered nurses leaving the workplace are estimated to cost healthcare organizations and society between $1.4 and $2.1 billion annually. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore what strategies leaders of healthcare organizations from the Eastern and Northern regions of Virginia can use to mitigate the effects of nurse turnover and its cost to the organization. The target population consisted of 8 RNs who experienced turnover during their nursing careers. The conceptual framework for this study was Herzberg's dual-factor theory. Face-to-face semistructured interviews were conducted and publically available documents were garnered. Thematic reduction of participants' interviews, coupled with …
The Impact Of Psychological Birth Order On Academic Achievement And Motivation, Alissa Jo Combs-Draughn
The Impact Of Psychological Birth Order On Academic Achievement And Motivation, Alissa Jo Combs-Draughn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Historically, research in the field of birth order yielded inconsistent and at times contro-versial results. Researchers have long been interested in the impact of birth order on both social and cognitive development, in part due to the research of Adler. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if psychological birth order directly impacts stu-dent achievement and motivation. The resource dilution theory and confluence model were used to investigate the relationship between sibling perception of family roles within familial settings and academic performance and motivation within the college setting. The quantitative study used an online survey to assess psychological …
Parental Perceptions Of Childhood Overweight And Obesity In Four-Year-Olds In Northeastern North Carolina, Crystal Keyes Terry
Parental Perceptions Of Childhood Overweight And Obesity In Four-Year-Olds In Northeastern North Carolina, Crystal Keyes Terry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood obesity has increased due to factors such as more television time, less outside play, parents' lack of education about nutritious meals, and eating more fast food versus home cooked meals. Research has been performed on many school-aged children; however, there is a gap in research as it pertains to preschool children. Preschool age learning is when children are most receptive to habit-forming activities. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to assess the parental perceptions of 11 preschool parents in rural Northeastern North Carolina of 4-year-old children who have been told by a health care professional that their …
User Adoption Of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems In The Public Sector, Lionel O. Wright
User Adoption Of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems In The Public Sector, Lionel O. Wright
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The importance of aligning information technology and business strategies to exploit capabilities and change business practices has increased as firms strive for competitive advantage in a diverse and changing marketplace. Nevertheless, over 50% of firms implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems ranked expected process and value enhancements as inadequate, whereas only 13% indicated that implementations met their needs. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model formed the conceptual framework of this single case study. The study comprised a purposeful sampling of 8 business managers in Southeast Alabama working in related job roles and based on established …
Teaching Through The Lens Of Humane Education In U.S. Schools, Kristine Cecilia Tucker
Teaching Through The Lens Of Humane Education In U.S. Schools, Kristine Cecilia Tucker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Humane education (HE) is a specialized niche in higher education and adult learning. HE provides a curricular framework positioning environmental ethics, animal protection, human rights, media literacy, culture, and change processes as the nexus for understanding and inspiring social change. Research-derived experiences illuminating how educators conceptualize and implement HE in U.S. schools are absent from the scholarly literature. Facing this gap, practitioners and administrators of HE programs cannot access nor apply research-derived practices to inform instruction. To address this gap, a conceptual framework was advanced weaving together HE teaching experience, Freirean philosophy, hyphenated selves, reflection-in-action, transformative learning, and transformative education …

Emergency Room Utilization Of Participants With Mental Health Conditions Enrolled In Health Home Services, Amanda Duff
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Large numbers of individuals utilize the ER each year for mental health reasons. The health home agency in this study was designed under the Affordable Care Act with the intention of increasing patient self-management thus decreasing high-cost service utilization. The effectiveness of health homes in reducing mental health-related ER visits has remained unexplored. In this study, the relationship between participation in this program and ER utilization was examined, using the theoretical framework of the Health Belief Model. The sample of 128 health home participants with documented mental health conditions was selected using systematic random sampling. A one-way, repeated-measures t-test and …
Impact Of Distance, Diagnosis, And Demographics On Attendance For Rural Outpatient Treatment, Trey Howard Jensen
Impact Of Distance, Diagnosis, And Demographics On Attendance For Rural Outpatient Treatment, Trey Howard Jensen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Missed psychotherapy appointments inhibit mental health treatment, limit the availability of treatment to those waiting for care, and reduce clinician revenue. Previous research has revealed that the factors that predict missed appointments vary depending on the geographic location in which that research is conducted. There is not a complete understanding of the characteristics of people who miss appointments in a rural context. This study used information from 281 client records to examine the predictive relationships among missed appointments and the distance traveled to the clinic, mental health diagnosis, age, and gender at a rural outpatient mental health clinic. The purpose …

A Curriculum On Culturally Competent Practices To Prevent Retraumatization In Diverse Survivors, Luana Rodriguez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This DNP project addresses the healthcare issue of intimate partner, domestic, and sexual violence (IPDSV), its impact on survivors, and reducing the potential for retraumatization by those who care for them in the clinical, behavioral, and social settings. Trauma-informed care interventions are designed to address the sequelae of trauma, promote recovery, and support resilience. Since IPDSV is a global health issue, supporting cultural needs of all clients is an essential aspect of trauma-informed care. This project was guided by a central research question that examined if trauma-informed, culturally competent curriculum be viewed by community stakeholders as an appropriate intervention for …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Engaging today’s youth in civil discussions of contentious issues remains both a crucial element in democratically oriented education and extremely challenging to facilitate. The purpose of this article, which documents and presents pilot study findings from a dance workshop that engaged practicing teachers surrounding the issue of immigration, is to understand how dance can be integrated into the curriculum to prepare students to engage in democratic deliberation. Data collection consisted of pre- and post-workshop interviews with participants and was analyzed based on common principles of democracy and democratic education found in the literature. Findings point to the important role that …

Three Reading-Intervention Teachers’ Identity Positioning And Practices To Motivate And Engage Emergent Bilinguals In An Urban Middle School, Jung-In Kim, Kara Mitchell Viesca
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This study investigated three urban middle-school teachers’ practices with respect to motivating and engaging emergent bilinguals in reading-intervention classrooms by exploring the teachers’ identity positioning. The three teachers’ sociocultural and sociopolitical positioning of their students (e.g. students as individuals, as monolithic learners, or as problems) was found to be related to their practices for motivating and engaging the students (e.g. hybrid, calibrated, or imposed practices). The teachers’ historical and current resources partially shaped how they positioned their students. The findings support that teachers should not only learn motivational practices but also reflect critically on positioning processes in the classroom.
Linguistic Construction Of Migrant Identity In U.S. Crime Reports, Theresa Catalano
Linguistic Construction Of Migrant Identity In U.S. Crime Reports, Theresa Catalano
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This article explores the representation of Latino migrants in U.S. crime reports. Through multidisciplinary linguistic analysis incorporating critical discourse analysis and cognitive linguistics, the author demonstrates how migrant identity is constructed linguistically in media discourse using various linguistic strategies to reveal an underlying xeno-racist discourse that serves the dominant group’s purpose of staying in power. The contribution of this paper lies in its systematic illustration of the covert nature in which this discourse is (re)produced in crime reports and the connections it can have to immigration policies and public attitudes. In addition, the aim of the paper is to serve …

Indonesian Pre-Service Teachers’ Identities In A Microteaching Context: Learning To Teach English In An Indonesian Teacher Education Program, Dwi Riyanti, Loukia K. Sarroub
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
In today’s globalized era, English has become one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. As a language of science and an international means of communication, English has attracted people around the world to learn and speak it. While the global role of English has been viewed in various different frameworks including “colonial celebratory” (Pennycook 2001, 59) and a form of imperialism (Phillipson 1992), English has become a global language because of the power that its speakers have (McKay 2002; Crysta11997). However, with English being a global language, it is no longer solely the property of native speakers …
What Does Motivated Mean? Re-Presenting Learning, Technology, And Motivation In Middle Schools Via New Ethnographic Writing, Justin Olmanson
What Does Motivated Mean? Re-Presenting Learning, Technology, And Motivation In Middle Schools Via New Ethnographic Writing, Justin Olmanson
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This article offers a critique of the way middle schoolers are often positioned as generalizable objects that can be acted upon to produce measurable increases in motivation and learning. The critique invites a reconsideration and cultural analysis of some of the dominant discourses and perceptions of technology, young adolescence, and the study of motivation. The use of New Ethnographic Writing—a method that performs a cultural critique via extended scenes—connects to the roles and status of motivation, technology, and educational research methods deployed within public schools. Coupled with weak theory, this approach offers a way to understand young adolescents as navigating …

New Media Literacies, Justin Olmanson, Zoe Falls
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
From Pleistocene-epoch cave drawings to texts produced via movable type, to on-demand video content accessed via personal mobile devices, the means of message production and distribution has expanded from exclusive and local to inclusive and international. During the same period, media have evolved from one-way mono-modal communication to interactive, multimodal, social experiences.
New media platforms provide educators with the means to connect academic literacy with learner literacies. A growing body of new media literacies research highlights some of the ways educators have integrated new media literacies into learning spaces without colonizing learner practices to align solely with conventional literacy goals …
Learning To Teach In An Urban Teacher Residency, Lauren Gatti
Learning To Teach In An Urban Teacher Residency, Lauren Gatti
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
In this article, I employ sociocultural theory to analyze the learning to teach process of two novice teachers enrolled in one Urban Teacher Residency (UTR). Findings show that Genesis and Jackie were differentially drawing on programmatic, disciplinary, relational, experiential, and dispositional resources as they learned to teach in an urban context. I show that programmatic resources of supervision and classroom management requirements (i.e., Doug Lemov’s Teach Like a Champion) not only differentially influenced teachers’ learning and development but also differentially impacted the development of trust with students.

Being “In A Limbo”: Perceptions Of Immigration, Identity And Adaptation Of Immigrant Students In South Africa And The United States, Theresa Catalano, Jill Fox, Saloshna Vandeyar
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Much research is available that details student experiences of immigration and adaptation to receiving countries and schools, but few studies analyze the metaphors used by immigrant students (IS) when talking about the immigration experience, or offer a comparative lens through which to view identity negotiation in two very different contexts. The present paper aims to address these gaps by conducting a comparative linguistic analysis of 20 interviews conducted with IS at universities in South Africa and the United States in order to gain a greater understanding of immigration and the types of identity negotiation processes learners undergo in these very …

Responding To Writing Fluency: An Activity Theory Analysis Of Teacher Preparation And Practices, Daliborka Crnkovic Padon
Responding To Writing Fluency: An Activity Theory Analysis Of Teacher Preparation And Practices, Daliborka Crnkovic Padon
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This case study examines eight first-year writing teachers’ practices, philosophies, and preparation with a specific focus on responding to students’ writing fluency. The data is illustrated through the theoretical framework of Activity Theory (Engeström, 1987, 2005), showing various contradictions between the expectations of the Composition Studies field and the actual responding practices. To understand these contradictions, I also examine the position statements issued by the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), the Council of Writing Program Administrators (CWPA), and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), as well as the bestselling writing teacher preparation books and first-year writing …
A High Performance Work Practice Scale: Validity And Invariance Across Five Cultures, Gabriela Flores
A High Performance Work Practice Scale: Validity And Invariance Across Five Cultures, Gabriela Flores
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this study, a comprehensive high performance work practice (HPWP) model is developed from an existing taxonomy of HPWPs. Using data collected in organizations across seventeen countries, the model is evaluated for equivalence across five cultures and two economic groups. Findings support the generalizability of the seven factor model across these contexts. Finally, the model is evaluated within a larger network of theoretically related antecedents and outcomes. Specifically, the behavioral perspective of HR and the resource based view are used to develop hypotheses relating the use of HPWPs to strategy and organizational resources.
Does Knowledge Of Concussion Symptoms Influence An Athlete's Self-Report Of A History Of Concussion Across Gender And Age?, Kara Ashlan Greco
Does Knowledge Of Concussion Symptoms Influence An Athlete's Self-Report Of A History Of Concussion Across Gender And Age?, Kara Ashlan Greco
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background: The incidence of sport-related concussion is debatable. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report an extrapolated incidence of 1.6 to 3.2 million recreational/sports-related traumatic brain injuries a year, the suspicion is that the incidence is much higher (CDC, 2014). An important consideration in determining the incidence involves whether an athleteâ??s knowledge of what a concussion is influences their self-report of prior concussions.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to replicate and extend Pfirman (2015) in determining whether providing information about concussion will increase the self-report of a history of concussion. Furthermore, this study investigates whether there …

Defining Moral Attitudes : An Examination Of The Structure And Consequences Of Moral Attitudes, Ciara Katelyn Kidder
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The goals of this Dissertation were to contribute to the literature on the structure of moral attitudes and explore the consequences of moral attitudes on person perception. The goal of study 1 was to replicate and extend previous research examining the automatic nature of moral objectivity and moral universalism. In Study 1, there was no support for the relationship between morality and objectivity and morality and universality. Instead, the study demonstrated that sequential priming may be an ineffective methodology for measuring these relationships. The goal of study 2 was to examine the relationship between the similarity of participant attitude to …

Collegiate Football Attendance In El Paso, Texas, Wesley Austin Miller
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study examines potential determinants of attendance at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners football games. Time series methodology is utilized to analyze UTEP attendance from 1967 to 2014. 22 explanatory variables are included in the final specification; 16 of which are statistically significant at the 10-percent level. Estimation results indicate that over 70 percent of the variation in UTEP football attendance is explained within the model. Elasticities of demand are estimated and indicate that demand for UTEP football games is inelastic with respect to all of the continuous regressors. Dynamic ex ante forecasts are generated for …
