A Step In The Right Direction: Tiered Library Instruction For Esl Writing Classes At Murray State University, Rebecca D. Richardson Mrs, Vince Medlock

INSPIRE Conference

This presentation will describe the collaboration between the University Libraries and Writing Instructors for the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Murray State University. A discussion between the groups about needs of ESL students and their level of language understanding resulted in a tiered approach to library research for ESL students. The 3-tiers prepare students for mainstream classes by introducing them to academic writing at an American university while building on a foundation of understanding of the research process and using academic databases to find reliable information. The presenters for this session represent both groups involved in the collaboration, …

Students’ Perceptions and Stigma Toward Those with Intellectual and Physical Disabilities

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that there is a negative impact on those who are labeled as having an intellectual or physical disability (Green, Davis, Karshmer, Marsh, & Straight, 2005). The purpose of this research was to learn more about the stigma against those with disabilities and how one can cope with this stigma.

METHODS: The subjects of this study were 80 General Psychology students. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions, which differed in which vignette received. The four vignettes described individuals with the disabilities of …

2016 Presidential Campaign And The American College Student, Madison Frost Nov 2016

2016 Presidential Campaign And The American College Student, Madison Frost

Scholars Week

It is perceived by many that college students have low awareness of the presidential campaign and its candidates. Many blame the sources from which knowledge is attained. Most researchers agree that the Internet and newspaper are the most popular sources, and both are positively related to political knowledge (Kenski & Stroud, 2006; Valentino, Hutchings, & Dmitri, 2004; Cao, 2008). Cao (2008) also found a positive association between young adults and political comedy shows, which have become even more popular since 2008. Other researchers found that watching presidential debates increased knowledge of candidates, but only individuals who were already interested in …

Resolving The Hard Problem And Calling For A Small Miracle, Arthur S. Reber Nov 2016

Resolving The Hard Problem And Calling For A Small Miracle, Arthur S. Reber

Animal Sentience

With the exception of the commentary by Key, the commentaries on Reber have a common feature: the commenters feel, with varying levels of enthusiasm, that there is at least some virtue in the core assumption of the Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC) theory that consciousness (or subjectivity or sentience) accompanies the earliest forms of life. The model has two important entailments: (a) it resolves the (in)famous Hard Problem by redirecting the search for the biochemical foundations of sentience away from human consciousness; and (b) it reduces the need for an emergentist miracle to a far simpler scale than is currently …

Using Sensitivity Analyses For Unobserved Confounding To Address Covariate Measurement Error In Propensity Score Methods, Kara E. Rudolph, Elizabeth A. Stuart Nov 2016

Using Sensitivity Analyses For Unobserved Confounding To Address Covariate Measurement Error In Propensity Score Methods, Kara E. Rudolph, Elizabeth A. Stuart

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Propensity score methods are a popular tool to control for confounding in observational data, but their bias-reduction properties are threatened by covariate measurement error. There are few easy-to-implement methods to correct for such bias. We describe and demonstrate how existing sensitivity analyses for unobserved confounding---propensity score calibration, Vanderweele and Arah's bias formulas, and Rosenbaum's sensitivity analysis---can be adapted to address this problem. In a simulation study, we examined the extent to which these sensitivity analyses can correct for several measurement error structures: classical, systematic differential, and heteroscedastic covariate measurement error. We then apply these approaches to address covariate measurement error …

Gwu Team Joins Mission To ‘Reach, Rescue And Restore’, Office Of University Communications, Bryton Mitchell

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Instead of taking time off to relax and rest, a team of 17 eager students and faculty from Gardner-Webb University spent their fall break in Atlanta, Ga., to pursue mission work. They partnered with various ministries of the Atlanta Dream Center, an organization whose mission is to “reach, rescue and restore men, women, and children so that the glory of God may be known.” Emily Hamilton (’18) of Everson, Wash., a psychology and Spanish major who participated in the trip, enjoyed her time in Atlanta and learned a lot from this experience.

Efficacy Of Math Video Tutorials On Student Perception And Achievement, Carol R. Kahrmann Nov 2016

Efficacy Of Math Video Tutorials On Student Perception And Achievement, Carol R. Kahrmann

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

Abstract

The purpose of this mixed methods research study is to explore how teacher-made video tutorials in one middle school mathematics classroom are being used and what enables/impedes their effectiveness. A quantitative, quasi-experimental design investigates how video tutorial usage relates to students’ self-efficacy and achievement in mathematics. The sample consisted of 55 students in the experimental group and 65 students in the control group. Results found parents wanted the tutorials even if they did not view them. Students did actually use the video tutorials for remediation and learning. Videos longer than ten minutes impeded the effectiveness of the videos. The …

Dreams, Aspirations And Related Constructs In Children And Adolescents: A Literature Review, Daniel T. L. Shek, Florence K. Y. Wu, Hildie Leung

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Although children and adolescents are often asked about their “dreams” about life, scientific studies of “dreams” and related constructs are grossly inadequate. This paper describes the findings arising from a review study exploring the concepts of dreams, aspirations and related constructs in children and adolescents. Besides an overview of the concept of dream, conceptual features and unique underpinnings of other concepts commonly related to dream, such as “aspirations”, “hope”, “future orientation” and “resilience” are presented in this paper. The research questions surrounding “dream” and related constructs in children and adolescents are presented and future research directions are discussed.

Hope, Aspirations, And Resilience In Children And Adolescents: A Review Of Research On Measurement And Related Antecedents, Hildie Leung, Florence K. Y. Wu, Daniel T. L. Shek

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Hope, aspirations, and resilience are important developmental assets for children and adolescents. Based on the existing Western and Chinese literature, this review aims to identify instruments used to assess hope, aspirations, resilience, and conceptually related constructs as well as antecedents of the constructs in adolescents. A systematic literature search in the major databases was conducted. A total of 223 articles, with 144 being retrieved from international databases and 79 from China’s database, met the criteria and were included in the present review. Findings revealed that the majority of the existing scales were developed predominantly in the West and there were …

Lee V. Macon County Board Of Education: The Possibilities Of Federal Enforcement Of Equal Educational Opportunity, Brian K. Landsberg Nov 2016

Lee V. Macon County Board Of Education: The Possibilities Of Federal Enforcement Of Equal Educational Opportunity, Brian K. Landsberg

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

Lee v. Macon County Board of Education shows the evolution of the role of the three branches in enforcing the equal protection clause in public education in Alabama. All three branches initially acquiesced in the separate but equal doctrine. The executive and the judicial branches rejected the doctrine in Brown, but the legislative branch remained silent until 1964. Despite Congress’ failure to authorize a federal role in desegregation, the Department of Justice was an active participant in Lee beginning in 1963. When Congress finally did act in 1964 to authorize such suits, it encumbered the authorization with severe limitations. Congress …

Locally Optimized Mapping Of Slum Conditions In A Sub-Saharan Context: A Case Study Of Bamenda, Cameroon, Julius Anchang Nov 2016

Locally Optimized Mapping Of Slum Conditions In A Sub-Saharan Context: A Case Study Of Bamenda, Cameroon, Julius Anchang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite being an indicator of modernization and macro-economic growth, urbanization in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa is tightly interwoven with poverty and deprivation. This has manifested physically as slums, which represent the worst residential urban areas, marked by lack of access to good quality housing and basic services. To effectively combat the slum phenomenon, local slum conditions must be captured in quantitative and spatial terms. However, there are significant hurdles to this. Slum detection and mapping requires readily available and reliable data, as well as a proper conceptualization of measurement and scale. Using Bamenda, Cameroon, as a test case, this …

The Perspectives Of Core Academic Middle School Teachers Regarding Career Education Under Different School Settings, Meredith Leigh Bogush Nov 2016

The Perspectives Of Core Academic Middle School Teachers Regarding Career Education Under Different School Settings, Meredith Leigh Bogush

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to quantify core academic middle school teachers’ (English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social science) perspectives of career education. Prior research denotes that if career education exposure and awareness is provided in middle school grades, then students have the potential to develop a valuable understanding of various occupations available in the future (Akos, Konold, & Niles, 2004). Students observe what the work accomplishes and the effort required for the employee to be successful. If the occupation interests the students, then an increased motivation to complete their studies is likely to develop as they see the …

Secondary Analysis Of Concussion Data, Martin Zwick, Stephanie Kolakowsky-Hayner, Nancy Carney, Maya Balamane, Tracie Nettleton, D. Wright

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Clinical studies are expensive & time-consuming. Typically in these studies specific hypotheses are subjected to confirmatory test. Yet the data may harbor evidence of unanticipated relations between variables. It is thus desirable to subject the data to secondary analyses in the hope of discovering novel & valuable associations. Exploratory analysis, however, is tentative: findings should be replicated in new data. This presentation reports some secondary analyses on concussion data. Data mining on 2 datasets will be discussed, & some unexpected findings reported. The analyses use reconstructability analysis (RA), a probabilistic graphical modeling method implemented in the Occam software package developed …

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: A Content Analysis Of Self-Inflicted Face-Ism On Instagram, Madeline Powell Nov 2016

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: A Content Analysis Of Self-Inflicted Face-Ism On Instagram, Madeline Powell

University Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore potential gendered stereotypes by examining the facial prominence of male and female celebrities’ social media images. The face-ism theory evaluates the facial prominence of a depiction; higher facial prominence prompts viewers of media to assume the person they are observing is more intelligent and more likeable in general. In previous research men had higher facial prominence than women, which calls in to question the perpetuation of gendered stereotypes in media. This research is a content analysis of 300 self-selected Instagram photos, posted by the top 30 followed men and women celebrities on …

Treatment As An Individual And The Priority Of Persons Over Groups In Antidiscrimination Law, Patrick S. Shin Nov 2016

Treatment As An Individual And The Priority Of Persons Over Groups In Antidiscrimination Law, Patrick S. Shin

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

The Supreme Court has said that the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution and Title VII’s prohibition of discrimination require that all persons be treated as individuals and that the laws operate primarily to protect “persons, not groups.” This article shows that the legal requirement of individual treatment has two distinct components: a rule invalidating inferences about persons based on their membership in protected groups and a rule prohibiting disparate treatment for the sake of group interests or intergroup equality. The first rule is rooted in moral principles of respect for individual autonomy. The second rule is a principle that …

Contrary to popular belief, teaching and learning in an online environment is not easier or less work than a traditional classroom. It takes intentionality, discipline and commitment from both the instructor and the student. However, the flexibility offered by online programs makes this option increasingly appealing. With this growing demand, online instructors must think critically about the content, strategically plan activities and align outcomes with diverse student goals. All …
