Yoko Shigemi (’16) and her husband, Akihiko, moved to the United States from Yamaguchi, Japan, almost 20 years ago, so he could attend the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University. “He had graduated from seminary in Japan and had experience as a pastor in Japan,” Shigemi related. “We arrived with two suitcases, bags and our son, Aisaku, who had just turned 3.”

After attending a School of Divinity Preview Day at Gardner-Webb University and meeting students and faculty, Sherlene Alford (’18) was nearly convinced she’d found the right place to obtain her Master of Divinity in Pastoral Care and Counseling. The one thing holding her back was the three-hour drive from her home in Laurinburg, N.C. “The deal sealer on attending Gardner-Webb actually occurred the very next day when I received a follow-up call from Kheresa Harmon (School of Divinity Director of Admissions),” Alford elaborated.

“They Kind Of Rely On The Library”: School Librarians Serving Lgbt Students, Shannon M. Oltmann
“They Kind Of Rely On The Library”: School Librarians Serving Lgbt Students, Shannon M. Oltmann
Information Science Faculty Publications
This research examines school librarians’ perspectives on collecting LGBT materials. Based on qualitative interviews with thirty-one school librarians, this project found generally strong support for collecting LGBT materials. School librarians discussed serving their communities, having resources for all students, and meeting the needs of diverse students. In addition, they shared several ways that school libraries can counter bullying: creating a bully-free zone in the library, collecting LGBT and anti-bullying materials, collaborating with guidance counselors and teachers, suggesting particular books for certain students, being a supporter of students, and positioning the school library as a safe space.

Re-Building Coal Country: A Church/University Partnership, Carl Milofsky, Brandn Green
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper describes a developing partnership between a church-based service learning center and a university initiative to build a field station in a low-income community in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. It is a case study of how secular and religious institutions have been collaborating to achieve the shared goal of improving social conditions in specific communities. The theoretical focus of the paper is on how a change from a “glass is half empty” to a “glass is half full” perception of the community opens new possibilities for change. This paper concentrates on the story of one partnership as …

The Dance Of Formation: Engaging Faith Practices As A Way To Shape Clergy Spouse Life In The Evangelical Lutheran Church In America, Erin M. Swenson-Reinhold
The Dance Of Formation: Engaging Faith Practices As A Way To Shape Clergy Spouse Life In The Evangelical Lutheran Church In America, Erin M. Swenson-Reinhold
Doctor of Ministry
Christian spiritual formation is a lifelong process of being transformed into the image of Christ. The current model of theological education in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) often fails to prepare seminarians and their spouses for the challenges of long-term ministry by neglecting the spiritual formation process in favor of skill-based training. When this occurs, problems may arise in the marriage or ministry. This dissertation proposes there is a definite need for spiritual nourishment and spiritual formation for clergy and their families, and faith practices are important predictors of individual and relational health.
