How Nurses Perceive The Impact Of Health It Applications On Their Performance And Satisfaction: Examining The Organizational, Social, And Personal Factors, Sadaf Ashtari
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Applying information technology tools in the healthcare industry is an appropriate solution to integrate and record medical data and provide complete access of patients’ information. However, the effectiveness of these technologies depends on their successful implementation and adaptation. This study addresses the impact of result observability, autonomy, perceived barriers, task structure, privacy and security anxiety, and communication (social) patterns on the perception of the performance and satisfaction of nurses using IT applications in healthcare. Furthermore, the effects of nurses’ years of experience, age, different hospitals, different electronic medical records (EMR) applications, and personality factors are examined as a moderator factors …

Using Patient Value Statements To Develop A Culture Of Patient-Centred Care: A Case Study Of An Ontario, Canada Hospital, Erica Bridge, Madelyn P. Law, Miya Narushima
Patient Experience Journal
Patient-centred care (PCC) is not a new concept; however, in recent years it has garnered increasing attention in the research literature and clinical practice. PCC in clinical practice has been found to improve clinical outcomes, resource allocation, and the patient experience. In response to the need for PCC and quality in healthcare, the Ontario, Canada government developed the Excellent Care for All Act (ECFAA) in 2010. The ECFAA imposes six obligations to Ontario hospitals, one of which is developing and publishing a Patient Declaration of Values (PDoV). The purpose of this study was to explore how a leading patient-centred Ontario …
Predictive Mapping Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis At The County Level In The State Of Florida, Ali Moradi
Predictive Mapping Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis At The County Level In The State Of Florida, Ali Moradi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: One of the major barriers to developing an accurate tuberculosis (TB) surveillance program for Florida is the design and implementation of a sampling system that will adequately monitor and predict varying sizes and characteristics of county-level vulnerable endemic sub-populations and their explanatory covariates (e.g., living or working in a residential care facility). The aim of this research study is to envision an endemic, tuberculosis-related web-based interface for use by public health officials in the State of Florida which includes generating essential information such as a real-time syndrome-based reporting to regulate automated and immediate 'Alerts' to public health officials, doctors, …

The Voices Of Educators: An Interview Study Of The Implementation Process Of The English/Language Arts Common Core State Standards Initiative, Efren Ponce
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Historically, disenfranchised students in the American education system have been promised opportunity through successful participation in the school system. These promises are voiced in legislation like the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and by executive actions like President Obama’s Race to the Top Initiative. Evidenced by the continuing education gap, the promises of success through education continue to evade many American children across the nation, especially students who are most in need of the support promised in these quixotic visions of opportunity.
This is a qualitative interview study that aimed to gather the voices of educators involved in …
Information Technology And Learning On-The-Job, James Bessen
Information Technology And Learning On-The-Job, James Bessen
Faculty Scholarship
Economists disagree how much technology raises demand for workers with pre-existing skills. But technology might affect wages another way: through skills learned on the job. Using instrumental variables on 9 panels of workers from 1989 to 2013, this paper estimates that workers who use information technology (IT) have wage growth that is about 2% greater than non-IT workers, all else equal, implying substantial learning. This effect persists over time, implying sustained productivity growth from IT. Also, it benefits workers both with and without college degrees. Because many more college-educated workers use IT, college wages grow faster, contributing to economic inequality.

College of Population Health Faculty Papers
The ambulatory care setting is an increasingly important component of the patient safety conversation. Inpatient safety is the primary focus of the vast majority of safety research and interventions, but the ambulatory setting is actually where most medical care is administered. Recent attention has shifted toward examining ambulatory care in order to implement better health care quality and safety practices. This annotated bibliography was created to analyze and augment the current literature on ambulatory care practices with regard to patient safety and quality improvement. By providing a thorough examination of current practices, potential improvement strategies in ambulatory care health care …

Evaluation Champions: What They Do, Why They Do It, And Why It Matters To Organizations, Benjamin Silliman, Pennie Crinion, Thomas Archibald
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Evaluation champions are individuals who serve as catalysts for building evaluation capacity within an organization. They advocate for the importance of program evaluation, model good evaluation behaviors, and mentor their peers in program evaluation skills and competencies. Interviews with 40 peer-nominated champions in four purposively-sampled Extension organizations identified the roles, contexts, and motivations of staff who act as evaluation champions. Findings underline the importance—and the limits—of mentors and project teams in building evaluation capacity in complex organizations. Implications for practice, research, and policy are discussed.

Evaluation Champions: What They Need And Where They Fit In Organizational Learning, Benjamin Silliman, Pennie Crinion, Thomas Archibald
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Evaluation champions in four state Extension systems described needs for training and support and perspectives on building evaluation capacity in their organization as part of a larger interview study exploring their roles, growth, and motivations. These 40 evaluation leaders identified needs for basic and advanced evaluation skills training, technical assistance, and practical learning via mentoring and project teams. Recommendations for organizational change in evaluation capacity included “top-down” investments in communication, training, and practical support, as well as increased “bottom-up” efforts by champions like themselves to advocate, model best practice, and contribute to training and mentoring peers. Implications for professional development …

Critical Cultural Student Affairs Praxis And Participatory Action Research, Oiyan A. Poon, Dian D. Squire, Delia Cheung Hom, Kevin Gin, Megan S. Segoshi, Aaron Parayno
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
This paper explores how student affairs practitioners may engage in critical cultural praxis through participatory action research (PAR). As authors, both researchers and practitioners, we partnered with one another to conduct a needs assessment of Asian American students through PAR methods at a university in the northeast United States. Unfortunately, the PAR project as initially designed did not come to fruition. We used autoethnography to understand the many barriers that prevented the completion of the project, such as lengthy and unclear IRB processes, lack of organizational stability, and limited institutional support. Finally, we offer insight into how scholar-practitioners and institutions …

DNP and Student Works
Mulago National Referral Hospital (Mulago), in the sub-Saharan African country of Uganda, is one of the largest hospitals in East Africa. Continuing education requirements for nurses working in the ICU at Mulago are not formalized, and teaching preferences for nurses here at not well-understood. Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is a global problem, but the incidence and prevalence of the disease is not well-documented in the developing world. Undoubtedly, nursing interventions play a significant role in the prevention of VAP, but education on evidence-based bundle approaches in countries such as Uganda is not well-understood. Active teaching methods, such as posters and …

Mitigating Madness: How We Authenticate And Authorize Users To Deliver Databases In A Contractually Complicated Context, Jeremy M. Brown, Geoffrey P. Timms
Charleston Library Conference
During the 2011 overhaul of the Mercer University Libraries website we developed an authentication system to interface with EZProxy and our campus Active Directory system that provides convenient management and delivery of our A–Z database listing. With multiple campuses and seven e‐resource privilege groups, we were able to provide persistent URLs for databases to subject librarians, dynamic database lists based upon users’ access privileges, convenient integration with our content management system, and a simple backend management interface requiring little expertise to use. We then sought to improve the situation by organizational and license simplification before our 2014 website overhaul: We …
Levitating Libraries To The Clouds: A Strategy For Academic Libraries, Mark Dehmlow
Levitating Libraries To The Clouds: A Strategy For Academic Libraries, Mark Dehmlow
Charleston Library Conference
The University of Notre Dame’s Office of Information Technology is in the process of implementing a “Cloud First” strategy through which it intends to move 80% of its core technical infrastructure into the cloud by the end of 2017. The strategy advocates a tiered prioritization structure that recommends the hosting (SaaS) model for most services, the AWS (IaaS) model for fewer services, and finally on premises for a handful of the remaining services. As a campus technology partner, the Hesburgh Libraries has begun planning for moving many of our services and infrastructure into the cloud. This initiative represents a radical …

Three Heads Are Better Than One: Organizational Changes In Collection Management Leadership, Barbara A. Bishop, Adelia B. Grabowsky, Liza Weisbrod
Charleston Library Conference
Financial pressures, shrinking staff, shifting user expectations, and advances in format access and availability mean that organizational change seems to have become a constant in today’s academic library. The area of collection management has not been immune from change; the increasing emphasis on electronic formats, questions about access versus ownership, and the rise of open access have all required adjustment in managing collections. Even with all this change, most academic libraries have retained an organizational structure with a single person serving as a collection management coordinator or decision maker. This presentation details the shift in one academic library from a …

Two Models Of Health Sciences Center Leadership During Turbulent Times, Howard F. Stein, Seth Allcorn
International Journal of Leadership and Change
Leadership and change in health sciences centers are explored through contrasting two models of leadership: commonly practiced leadership and what has been referred to as “good enough leadership” (GEL). Several common cases or scenarios are presented through the lens of each model, with the conclusion that good enough leadership is more functional, creative, and healing than more widespread conventional models.

Crisis Leadership During The Great Recession Of 2008, Steven M. Walker, Matthew P. Earnhardt, Jason M. Newcomer, James W. Marion, Jr., Jon C. Tomlinson
International Journal of Leadership and Change
Understanding leadership characteristics, frameworks, components, and contexts that are beneficial to the guidance of organizational policy is useful for understanding the way in which leaders should act during a crisis. Recessions are common throughout economies; yet, many see recessions as crises. Due to the chaotic nature of economic recessions, leaders must work in conditions of uncertainty, complexity, and volatility. Therefore, using a qualitative phenomenological approach, an examination was conducted on leaders’ lived experiences of the Great Recession of 2008 to further understand the concept of crisis leadership. A discussion is included on the way in which leaders internalize and analyze …
