Diet And Migration In Coastal Oaxaca: Identifying Effects Of Political And Social Collapse Through The Utilization Of Stable Isotope Analysis, Jacklyn Rumberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study involves the investigation of diet and mobility among people living in the lower Río Verde Valley, Oaxaca, Mexico, during the Late Classic (AD 500-800) and Early Postclassic (AD 800-1200) periods. Specifically, this research focuses on how political and social collapse affected subsistence practices and diet, particularly maize agriculture and consumption, as well as human migration. Archaeological evidence suggests that Río Viejo, the region's largest urban center before AD 800, experienced multiple periods of political fragmentation and instability during its long history, specifically during the Early Classic (AD 250 - 500) and Early Postclassic periods, making it an ideal …

An Investigation Of The Biomechanical Implications Of Lower Limb Fractures And Leg Length Disparity, Elizabeth Mills Jan 2016

An Investigation Of The Biomechanical Implications Of Lower Limb Fractures And Leg Length Disparity, Elizabeth Mills

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary goals of biological anthropology is to develop an accurate understanding of human anatomy, health, disease, and injury in both modern and archaeological populations. Paleopathological analyses are a fruitful means of identifying disease and injury in skeletal assemblages, but the individual long-term biomechanical effects associated with pathological conditions have not yet been adequately explored in the literature. Leg fractures are a common pathological condition in both modern and archaeological populations, the effects of which may alter the biomechanics of gait. A growing body of clinical literature demonstrates that abnormal ambulatory function may have far-reaching effects in the …

Political, Economic, And Health Determinants Of Tuberculosis Incidence, Ashley Rutherford Jan 2016

Political, Economic, And Health Determinants Of Tuberculosis Incidence, Ashley Rutherford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The epidemiologic transition has shifted major causes of mortality from infectious disease to chronic disease; however, infectious diseases are again re-emerging as a major global concern (Diamond, 1997; Karlen, 1995; McNeil, 1976). This research aimed to identify potential areas of infectious disease influence that are not health-related in order to help governments and policymakers establish new policies, correct current policies, or further address these issues in order to effectively prevent and combat infectious disease. This study employed a retrospective, cross-sectional, non-experimental design via structural equation modeling (SEM) and examined tuberculosis incidence rates at the country-level. Secondary data from open-source, international …

The Reproducibility And Validity Of Using The Dmax Method To Predict Physical Working Capacity At Fatigue Threshold, Joshua Riffe Jan 2016

The Reproducibility And Validity Of Using The Dmax Method To Predict Physical Working Capacity At Fatigue Threshold, Joshua Riffe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the original (ORG) physical working capacity at fatigue threshold (PWCFT) assessment has demonstrated strong reliability and sensitivity to training and/or nutritional interventions, limitations may exist regarding the method of PWCFT estimation. However, a relatively new mathematical method, called Dmax, has been shown to be objective and reliable when estimating metabolic and neuromuscular fatigue thresholds. To date, however, no study has examined whether the Dmax method for estimating the work rate at PWCFT is similar to the ORG method. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Dmax-EMG method for estimating and tracking …

Male And Female Differences In Health Benefits Derived From Physical Activity: Implications For Exercise Prescription, Beth P. Hands, Helen Parker, Dawne Larkin, Marja Cantell, Elizabeth Rose Jan 2016

Male And Female Differences In Health Benefits Derived From Physical Activity: Implications For Exercise Prescription, Beth P. Hands, Helen Parker, Dawne Larkin, Marja Cantell, Elizabeth Rose

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Abstract:

Males are consistently reported as more physically active than females regardless of age or measure. Often, this difference results in females identified as under active and at risk of longterm poor health outcomes. In this paper a different perspective drawing on evidence from many sources is offered. Males and females gain different health benefits according to the level, mode and intensity of the physical activity. Some potential ramifications of these gender differences in health benefits are evident in the prevalence of hypokinetic diseases across the life span and the interpretation of measured physical activity levels and intensities. By focusing …

Expression And Functions Of Il-24 And Socs3 In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Keratitis In A C57bl/6 Mouse Model, Bing Xu Jan 2016

Expression And Functions Of Il-24 And Socs3 In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Keratitis In A C57bl/6 Mouse Model, Bing Xu

Wayne State University Dissertations

The aim of this study was to elucidate the expression and functions of interleukin (IL)-24 and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3), and their regulatory relationship in C57BL/6 mouse corneas in response to Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) infection. Among IL-20R cytokines, only IL-24 was induced at both mRNA and protein levels by the infection, and this upregulation was dampened by flagellin pretreatment. Time course studies revealed that IL-24 expression was markedly elevated, followed by a subsidence and second elevation, a pattern shared with SOCS3 but not IL-1β or IL-6. Silencing of IL-24 enhanced S100A8/A9 expression, and suppressed SOCS3, IL-1β, IL-1RN, and …

Persistent Threats To Commercial Speech, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2016

Persistent Threats To Commercial Speech, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

The current Supreme Court is very protective of speech, including commercial speech. Threats to commercial speech persist nonetheless. This article briefly examines two: the use of commercial speech restrictions as a form of rent-seeking, and compelled commercial speech. Regulation of commercial speech is sometimes used to protect established corporate interests from competitors who are less able to bear the costs of regulation, with consequences that extend beyond the economic marketplace. In the case of commercial speech, courts have also been unduly deferential to claims of a consumer “right to know” as a basis for mandated labeling and disclosure. Greater and …

Life Satisfaction, Overweight And Obesity, Masanori Kuroki Jan 2016

Life Satisfaction, Overweight And Obesity, Masanori Kuroki

Faculty Publications - The LeMoyne Smith School of Business

Many economists share the view that the rise in obesity is largely the result of rational decision-making by individuals who compare risks and benefits. A dominant view among economists is that there is no economic justification for government intervention unless there is a market failure. However, recent developments in behavioral economics suggests that people often fail to make optimal decisions, and that public welfare may be improved by government interventions even when there is no externality. This paper examines the association between one’s body weight and life satisfaction by utilizing data on self-reported life satisfaction, which approximates individual utility, after …

Imagining Global Health With Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2016

Imagining Global Health With Justice, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article offers a way to achieve global health with justice as a global health imperative. It is possible to have global health without justice, meaning that improvements in health outcomes could be achieved, but without a fair distribution of the benefits of good health. It is also possible to have justice without global health, where health outcomes are evenly distributed across the population but overall health is not improved. With this understanding, this article challenges current ways of understanding global health, and argues that absolute reductions in morbidity and premature mortality are not robust indicators of success in the …

Compelled Commercial Speech And The Consumer "Right To Know", Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2016

Compelled Commercial Speech And The Consumer "Right To Know", Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Compelled commercial speech, including mandatory labeling and the disclosure of factually true information, should not be seen as a separate category of speech under the First Amendment. Rather, compelled commercial speech should be understood as a type of commercial speech and be subject to the same level of protection as commercial speech generally. Accordingly, commercial speech compulsions, such as mandatory disclosures and labeling requirements, must be supported by a substantial government interest under the Central Hudson framework. The assertion of a consumer “right to know” does not constitute such an interest and cannot, by itself, justify compelled commercial speech within …

Studies investigating the usefulness of technology to assist with behavioral health interventions in pediatric primary care are limited, but one study found that technology was a feasible approach for use in pediatric primary care (Harris et. al., 2012). That study assessed for alcohol with computer technology and provided the findings to the attending physicians …

The Effects Of Climate Change On Macroalgal Growth, Trophic Interactions And Community Structure, Gordon Ober Jan 2016

The Effects Of Climate Change On Macroalgal Growth, Trophic Interactions And Community Structure, Gordon Ober

Open Access Dissertations

Global climate change is threatening the structure, function, and health of ecosystems. While factors of climate change have been studied extensively over the past few decades, most research has focused on the response of single organisms or populations; as our ecosystems are comprised of complex interactions and relationships, it is of critical importance to understand how entire communities are going to be impacted by climate change. Ocean acidification (a by-product of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide, CO2), and nutrient loading are two major forces of global change that are projected to have detrimental impacts on coastal marine species and …

The Economic Life Of The Aetas Of Northern Philippines, Darin Jan Tindowen

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In today’s world, one of the bases of economic development is the presence of technology. However, not all communities and groups can have an access to the different technologies created by man. And one of these groups is the Aetas of Northern Philippines. This study was conducted to determine the different economic activities, and seasonal activities for survival of the Aetas. The participants of the study were the 25 Aeta families of a rural community in Northern Philippines. In-depth interview, observation, and community immersion were the instruments used by the researcher. Moreover, key informants and the elders were identified to …

Predictors Of Caffeine-Related Withdrawal Symptoms In College Freshmen, David J. Pomm Jan 2016

Predictors Of Caffeine-Related Withdrawal Symptoms In College Freshmen, David J. Pomm

Theses and Dissertations

While caffeine withdrawal has been well-characterized, research on caffeine intake and factors associated with withdrawal has been limited. The present study examined prevalence rates of caffeine use and identified psychosocial factors associated with having caffeine withdrawal headaches (CWH). Participants were N = 1,989 college freshmen who participated in the 2011 Spit for Science project. Caffeine use was reported by 80% of the sample. Females were more likely than males to consume caffeine, and soda was the primary source of caffeine for both genders. As hypothesized, daily caffeine users were more likely to report CWH than non-daily users. When multivariable analyses …

Host Densities And Parasitism Rates In A Forest Defoliator Across A Rural-Urban Landscape, Abigail J. Nelson Jan 2016

Host Densities And Parasitism Rates In A Forest Defoliator Across A Rural-Urban Landscape, Abigail J. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Fall cankerworm (FCW) outbreaks have recently increased in frequency and intensity in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, especially around cities of Charlotte, NC and Richmond, VA. This study evaluated the effects of two landscape features associated with urbanization, impervious surface and forest cover, on population patterns of FCW and its parasitoids across eastern Virginia. Forest cover was positively related to parasitism rates while impervious surface was positively related to FCW abundance, suggesting that FCW outbreaks may be amplified in urban areas. FCW abundance declined over the two-year period of this study, but parasitism rate increased at most sites. …

Computer-Assisted Cobb Angle Measurement From Posteroanterior Radiographs By A Curve Fitting Method, İbrahi̇m Yildiz Jan 2016

Computer-Assisted Cobb Angle Measurement From Posteroanterior Radiographs By A Curve Fitting Method, İbrahi̇m Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Incorrect determination of the top or end vertebrae of a scoliotic curve causes measurement errors when using the Cobb method. Such problems are due to subjectivity. This study was performed to minimize subjectivity by using a curve fitting method. A digitally scanned posteroanterior radiographic image was used for each patient. User-defined midpoints of the curvature, which indicate the midpoints of the vertebrae, were used to fit the polynomial equation. The locations of the top and end vertebrae were calculated using the first derivative of the fitted polynomial equation to obtain the analytical Cobb angle. The interobserver technical error of measurements …

Do Folivores Deplete Patches? : Foraging Behavior And The Dynamics Of Resource Use In The Costa Rican Mantled Howler (Alouatta Palliata), Jessica Ritsche Jan 2016

Do Folivores Deplete Patches? : Foraging Behavior And The Dynamics Of Resource Use In The Costa Rican Mantled Howler (Alouatta Palliata), Jessica Ritsche

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Two general assumptions have often been made about folivorous primates: first, that feeding competition is low or absent because leaves are a superabundant and evenly dispersed resource, and as a result, that feeding competition does not constrain the size of folivorous groups. However, many folivorous primates maintain smaller group sizes. In this study, I aimed to examine this 'folivore paradox' by testing the hypothesis that mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) deplete localized patches of young leaves and therefore experience feeding competition. One group of 8 adult individuals was studied July and August 2015 at Piro Research Station in the Osa …
