Framing Ole Miss Coverage In Mississippi Newspapers, Christina Steube Jan 2016

Framing Ole Miss Coverage In Mississippi Newspapers, Christina Steube

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The University of Mississippi, a public institution also known as Ole Miss, is naturally of public interest and consequently is the subject of constant, and sometimes controversial, media coverage. Through the last few years, Ole Miss Athletics has garnered much of that media attention due to its recent successes. However, coverage at Ole Miss, independent of its athletic programs, gets media coverage in a much different way. Sometimes that coverage will involve academic achievements, large financial donations and campus changes. However, other types of coverage, especially over the last four years, have been controversial, dealing with student conduct issues and …

Bone Mineral Density, Preventative Behaviors And Risk Factors In African American And Caucasian Mother-Daughter Pairs, Mary Haskins Haskins Jan 2016

Bone Mineral Density, Preventative Behaviors And Risk Factors In African American And Caucasian Mother-Daughter Pairs, Mary Haskins Haskins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is expected that by 2030, elderly minorities will comprise 20.2 million of the total 72.8 million population of Americans over 65 years (pollard, 2013). For African American women over the age of 50, 5% have osteoporosis and an estimated 35% have low bone mass (nof, n.d.). It is estimated that while over 40% of African American women over 80 years meet criteria for treatment, yet less than 12% are actually treated (Cauley, 2011). Striking disparities exist between African American and Caucasian women's likelihood for dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (dxa) referral, the measurement tool that is used to diagnosis osteoporosis. Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I quantified differences in above- and belowground biomass and storage of nutrients. I hypothesized that storage of phosphorous would be greater in belowground biomass in the non-growing season compared to the growing. I also hypothesized that the storage of phosphorous would be greater in aboveground biomass in the growing season compared to the non-growing season. Furthermore, I hypothesized that the total amount of nutrients in plant tissue would be greater in the growing season, than the non-growing season. Typha latifolia and Carex lurida were placed in mesocosms at the University of Mississippi Field Station (UMFS) and dosed …

Incidence Of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma By Residential Proximity To Superfund Sites In Kentucky: A Multivariate Analysis, William Brent Webber

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) is a category of cancers that arise from the lymphocytes of the immune system. The rates of NHL in the United States and Kentucky began to rise in the mid-20th Century, shortly after the manufacture, use, and disposal of numerous chemical substances began to increase during and after the Second World War. While the etiology of NHL is not fully known, there are several chemical substances for which evidence exists of a possible link between exposures and development of NHL and other cancers. Several of these substances are also present in sites within Kentucky designated by the …

The Utilization Of Models Of Care Transition To Reduce Medicare Beneficiaries’ Hospital Readmission Rates In Kentucky: A Case Study, Audra Putt Jan 2016

The Utilization Of Models Of Care Transition To Reduce Medicare Beneficiaries’ Hospital Readmission Rates In Kentucky: A Case Study, Audra Putt

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Problem: Unsuccessful care transitions for Medicare beneficiaries have resulted in high health expenditures and a diminished quality of care as the 30-day hospital readmission rate has increased. This has prompted the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to require hospitals with high readmission rates to pay penalties. As a result, the Community-based Care Transitions Program was established under Section 3026 of the Affordable Care Act to provide health organizations funding to utilize models of care transition to improve the care transition process. The purpose of this capstone project was to identify whether two community-based organization programs, the Kentucky Appalachian Transition …

Sugary drinks, including sports and energy drinks, are the number one source of added sugar in the American diet.1 Excess sugar consumption can lead to health complications such as overweight and obesity, and obesity-related chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.2 Sugary drink consumption among youth in Los Angeles is particularly high, and teenagers in Service Planning Area (SPA) 6 of Los Angeles have some of the highest consumption rates in the county, with one out of two reporting consuming at least one sugary drink per day.3 Based on the correlation between sugar consumption and health, …

Colorectal Cancer Prevention In The North Slope Borough Of Alaska Utilizing The Flu-Fit Intervention, Jennifer Jenkins Jan 2016

Colorectal Cancer Prevention In The North Slope Borough Of Alaska Utilizing The Flu-Fit Intervention, Jennifer Jenkins

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

The intention of the Flu-FIT intervention is to increase colorectal cancer screening rates by combing two annual activities into one visit that doesn’t necessitate a doctors visit. The original study increased colorectal cancer screening rates by 14 percentage points and this program should be able to show similar results in the North Slope Borough of Alaska. The North Slope Borough has the highest incidence rate of colorectal cancer in the United States, and this proposed intervention could lead to a reduction in that rate by increasing screening and knowledge about colorectal cancer in the community.

Food Insecurity, Social Inequality, And Social Policy, Sara Strickhouser Jan 2016

Food Insecurity, Social Inequality, And Social Policy, Sara Strickhouser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research shows that food insecurity rates and experiences vary by subpopulation. This dissertation examines the rates and experience of food insecurity rates across subpopulations using a wide variety of sociodemographic factors expanding the current research on de terminants of food insecurity. Subtopics surrounding the current food insecurity research are explored. These topics include determinants of food deserts, SNAP (or food stamps) utilization, and household adaptation strategies. This research shows that current measurements of food insecurity lack the detail needed to understand why households are food insecure besides lacking income. Using Bourdieu's four forms of capital, this study considers factors beyond …

Relative Reactivity Of Protein And Lipid To Oxidants In Different Bi-Phasic Systems And Its Implication In Sausage Quality, Jiayi Yang Jan 2016

Relative Reactivity Of Protein And Lipid To Oxidants In Different Bi-Phasic Systems And Its Implication In Sausage Quality, Jiayi Yang

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

This study investigated the progression of protein and lipid oxidation in different bi-phasic model systems: simple aqueous dispersions, liposome, and oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Varied concentrations of isolated pork myofibrillar protein (MFP) were mixed with free fatty acids (C18:1, C18:2, C18:3), lecithin, or vegetable oil to construct different lipid-protein dispersion systems, then subjected to hydroxyl radical stress at 4 °C. Comparison of the evolution of lipid oxidation with protein modification markers in all dispersion systems showed noteworthy attenuation of tryptophan fluorescence, protein carbonyl formation, and extensive polymerization of myosin in 2 h. This process preceded lipid oxidation which exhibited notable accumulations …

Serving In The Master’S House: Legal Protection For In-Home Care Workers In The United States, Michael Fischl

Faculty Articles and Papers

This essay will focus on the developing forms of legal protection available in the United States to those whose principal place of work is another person’s home and who are paid to do what is broadly referred to as “care work.” The particular services vary widely – from housecleaning, to child care, to companionship and routine health care management for the elderly and the infirm – but the labor market demographics do not: This is low-wage/no-benefit work performed almost exclusively by women and primarily by women of color and of extra-national origin

Phytoplankton Pigment Specific Growth And Losses Due To Microzooplankton Grazing In A Northern Gulf Of Mexico Estuary During Winter/Fall, Amanda M. Mcgehee, Donald G. Redalje Jan 2016

Phytoplankton Pigment Specific Growth And Losses Due To Microzooplankton Grazing In A Northern Gulf Of Mexico Estuary During Winter/Fall, Amanda M. Mcgehee, Donald G. Redalje

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Microzooplankton dilution grazing experiments were carried out on 6 dates, over a 3 month period at 2 locations in the Bay of St. Louis, MS (BSL) to determine phytoplankton pigment specific growth rates under natural (µ0) and replete (µn) nutrient conditions and microzooplankton grazing. We hypothesized that diatoms would be the largest portion of the phytoplankton composition due to the winter/fall season and that these organisms would have the highest growth/grazing rates. We suspected that river flow from the Jourdan River would adversely affect growth and grazing rates of all phytoplankton classes. Growth rates of 5 …

The production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) by planktonic microbes can influence the fate of oil and chemical dispersants in the ocean through emulsification, degradation, dispersion, aggregation, and/or sedimentation. In turn, microbial community structure and function, including the production and character of EPS, is influenced by the concentration and chemical composition of oil and chemical dispersants. For example, the production of marine oil snow and its sedimentation and flocculent accumulation to the seafloor were observed on an expansive scale after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Northern Gulf of Mexico in 2010, but little is known about the underlying …

"Don't Read This!": Lemony Snicket And The Control Of Youth Reading Autonomy In Late-Nineteenth-Century Britain, Brittany A. Previte

Senior Independent Study Theses

This independent study investigates adult authority in youth literature in late-nineteenth-century Britain. Examining both sensational literature known as “penny dreadfuls” and the didactic magazines The Boy’s Own Paper and The Girl’s Own Paper, this project analyzes how rhetoric enforced middle class ideology outside of the classroom and shaped the youth reading experience. In an urbanizing, industrializing Britain, anxiety about social mobility ran high, and youth consumption of penny dreadfuls received suspicion due to their supposedly subversive content. This study argues that penny dreadfuls actually reinforced the social order, mirroring didactic literature in their construction of conservative adult authority. In …

Methyl-Cpg Binding Proteins Mediate Octopaminergic Regulation Of Complex Behavioral Traits, Tarun Gupta Jan 2016

Methyl-Cpg Binding Proteins Mediate Octopaminergic Regulation Of Complex Behavioral Traits, Tarun Gupta

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

An organism’s survivability in the natural world is contingent to its ability to respond rapidly and appropriately to various cues and challenges in its physical and social environment. The dynamicity of various environmental and social factors necessitates plasticity in morphological, physiological and behavioral systems – both at the level of an individual organism and that of a species. For more than century, natural selection of existing genetic variation in populations has helped us understand such plasticity across generations. However, recent years have seen a re-emergence of somewhat contentious quasi-Lamarckian framework with which organisms can reliably transmit acquired traits to subsequent …

In Vitro Seed Germination, Plantlet Growth, Tuberization, And Syntheticseed Production Of Serapias Vomeracea (Burm.F.) Briq., Ersan Bektaş, Atalay Sökmen

Turkish Journal of Botany

Orchids are considered recalcitrant plants in in vitro propagation. Due to the lack of appropriate micropropagation techniques for mass production and damage to their ecological distribution posed by local gatherers, these species are threatened with extinction, including Serapias vomeracea (Burm.f.) Briq. In this research, we put forward a complete micropropagation method covering in vitro micropropagation, synthetic seed formation, germination in soil, and acclimatization to ambient conditions. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of successful synthetic seed formation and germination of S. vomeracea. Initially, seeds were germinated in different culture media and also media supplemented with …

Ruptures Of The Quadriceps And Patellar Tendons Of The Extensor Mechanism: A Review, Judd R. Fitzgerald Jan 2016

Ruptures Of The Quadriceps And Patellar Tendons Of The Extensor Mechanism: A Review, Judd R. Fitzgerald

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Damage to the quadriceps and patellar tendons of the extensor mechanism can be devastating and often life-changing injuries that require prompt diagnosis and treatment. A sound understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and degenerative changes of both tendons and the extensor mechanism of the knee can help guide surgical repair and postoperative rehabilitation of patients. Immediate primary repair has often resulted in improved postoperative results compared with delayed reconstruction, and the avoidance of gap formation by use of careful techniques and augmentation has been critical for successful treatment. Additionally, patients with extensor mechanism injuries frequently have medical comorbidities or notable tendon degeneration; …

The End Of An Era? Federal Civil Procedure After The 2015 Amendments, Adam N. Steinman Jan 2016

The End Of An Era? Federal Civil Procedure After The 2015 Amendments, Adam N. Steinman

Emory Law Journal

The recent amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure were the most controversial in decades. Many feared that the amendments would undermine the simplified, merits-driven approach that the original drafters of the Federal Rules envisioned and would weaken access to justice and the enforcement of substantive rights and obligations. This Article argues that the amendments do not mandate a more restrictive approach to pleading or discovery. The final amendments¿in light of their text, structure, and advisory committee notes¿should be interpreted to preserve notice pleading and a robust discovery process. The more significant lesson of the 2015 amendments, therefore, may …
