A Flipped Classroom Redesign In General Chemistry, Scott A. Reid Jan 2016

A Flipped Classroom Redesign In General Chemistry, Scott A. Reid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The flipped classroom continues to attract significant attention in higher education. Building upon our recent parallel controlled study of the flipped classroom in a second-term general chemistry course (J. Chem. Educ., 2016, 93, 13–23), here we report on a redesign of the flipped course aimed at scaling up total enrollment while keeping discussion sizes small (i.e.,students), and maintaining equivalent contact hour load for faculty and workload for students. To that end, the course format featured lecture contact pushed outside of the classroom in the form of video lectures (mean duration 13 minutes) paired with online …

The Evolution Of The Intersection Of Hiv And Breastfeeding In Global Policy, Kristin M. Sinning Jan 2016

The Evolution Of The Intersection Of Hiv And Breastfeeding In Global Policy, Kristin M. Sinning

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Increasing breastfeeding rates and reducing HIV/AIDS are two important global health priorities, and their intersection has led to policies that meet mutual goals of supporting, protecting and promoting breastfeeding and reducing the risk of HIV/AIDS. The World Health Organization has developed and released recommendations, policies, and guidance on infant feeding and the risk of transmission through breastfeeding. This analysis provides a historical, chronological perspective on the global policies for infant feeding in the case of an HIV-positive mother, an analysis of changes, and recommendations for the future. The policies evaluated demonstrate the evolution in knowledge and recommendations for infant feeding …

Strengths And Challenges Of A Rural Ohio Public Health Department: Considerations For Effective Service Delivery And Emergency Preparedness, Cindy L. Harris Graessle Jan 2016

Strengths And Challenges Of A Rural Ohio Public Health Department: Considerations For Effective Service Delivery And Emergency Preparedness, Cindy L. Harris Graessle

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

The local public health department is the main entity in cities and counties established to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of its community members. In many cases, particularly in rural areas, the health department may be the community’s closest access to health care, providing not only clinical care, but preventive services as well. These rural health departments have additional challenges that may not be experienced in the larger, more populated metropolitan areas. These challenges include lack of resources and funding that impact daily operations, expanded registered sanitarian responsibilities, and emergency preparedness difficulties with resource allocation and communication. Despite these …

Association Of Secondhand Tobacco Smoke And Abdominal Adiposity In The United States Population, Omar T. Tahtamooni Jan 2016

Association Of Secondhand Tobacco Smoke And Abdominal Adiposity In The United States Population, Omar T. Tahtamooni

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure occurs when people inhale smoke from tobacco products or inhale smoke that has been expelled by other smokers. Exposure to SHS increases the risk of many metabolic and chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease.

Purpose: To evaluate the association between SHS and abdominal adiposity in US adults. Methods: Data from 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was used to examine the relationship between SHS exposure and abdominal adiposity, Sagittal Abdominal Diameter [SAD]), after adjusting for covariates (age, gender, ethnicity, and income) (n=4,012). Univariate linear regression analyses were used to predict association of smoking …

Dynamic And Static Stretching Are Equally Effective Techniques For Female High School Soccer Players, Morgan Stefanoff Jan 2016

Dynamic And Static Stretching Are Equally Effective Techniques For Female High School Soccer Players, Morgan Stefanoff

The University Honors Program

Female athletes are more likely than males to experience anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Common mechanisms for ACL injury include anterior tibial shears occurring between 20-30 degrees of knee flexion and knee valgus (adduction). Stretching prior to exercise reduces the likelihood of ACL tears. I tested the hypothesis that dynamic stretching would reduce the likelihood of ACL tears as indexed by a greater range of motion (ROM) and greater joint stability (knee valgus) than static stretching. Twenty-seven healthy female soccer athletes in high school (ages 15-18) participated. The athletes completed a sit-and-reach test for flexibility, squats to assess ROM, and …

Injuries Among Security And Law Enforcement Personnel In The Private Versus Public Sectors, William S. Witt

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Background and Objectives: Data collected through workers’ compensation may be useful for occupational injury surveillance. This study examined whether differences existed between the public and private sectors of the security and law enforcement industry in Kentucky.

Methods: Using a cross-‐sectional design, workers’ compensation data from the Kentucky Department of Workers’ Claims was analyzed to evaluate differences in demographic and injury characteristics, as well as award outcomes, stratified by industry sector. The dataset included all workers’ compensation first reports of injury and claims filed by security and law enforcement personnel in Kentucky from 2005 to 2015. Statistical analyzes included chi-‐square and …

Eat Well, Keep Moving: Decreasing Childhood Obesity In Fulton County, Kentucky, Sandra Onekhena Jan 2016

Eat Well, Keep Moving: Decreasing Childhood Obesity In Fulton County, Kentucky, Sandra Onekhena

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

With the high rates of childhood obesity in Fulton County, the Purchase District Health Department proposes the implementation of the Eat Well and Keep Moving Program in all the county’s elementary schools among fourth and fifth graders. It is an interdisciplinary, evidence-based program that will be aimed at our short-term goal of increasing knowledge about nutrition and physical activity and inspiring positive behavioral change. It works by integrating lessons and activities about proper nutrition and activity into various aspects of the children’s lives — in the classroom, cafeteria, at home and in the community. We hope to see children move …

Mechanism Of Fecal Bacteriotherapy In Treating Clostridium Difficile Infection And Gi Tract Disorders, Rivka Steinberg Jan 2016

Mechanism Of Fecal Bacteriotherapy In Treating Clostridium Difficile Infection And Gi Tract Disorders, Rivka Steinberg

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Clostridium difficile infection, an increasingly prevalent and virulent condition, is often resistant to treatment. Standard antibiotic therapy is rarely efficient when used to treat recurrent C. difficile infection. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a safe, effective and inexpensive treatment that has a cure rate of about 90%, according to clinical trials and reports. This approach may also be applicable in treating ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, on the basis of the restoration of flora imbalances. Additionally, recent data suggests that a disproportion in composition of the gut microbiome may contribute to obesity. FMT, may restore a healthy …

Cognitive Effects Of Breastfeeding, Abraham Englard Jan 2016

Cognitive Effects Of Breastfeeding, Abraham Englard

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

This paper explores the cognitive effects of breastfeeding through Intelligence Testing and Imaging Testing that compares IQ, success, and brain structure of individuals that were breastfed, formula fed, and both breastfed and formula fed. Intelligence studies available are widespread for all age groups and signify a causal relationship between breastfeeding and intelligence. However, imaging testing is not as extensive, but shows a strong correlation between cognitive development and breastfeeding. The mechanism of breast milk’s impact on cognitive development is at an exploratory phase, with a possibility that docosahexaenoic and arachidonic acids, along with other nutrients found in breast milk, contribute …

A Dietary Approach To Cardiovascular Disease And Cancer: Does A Plant Based Diet Help Prevent And Reverse Cardiovascular Disease And Cancer?, Chana Wircberg Jan 2016

A Dietary Approach To Cardiovascular Disease And Cancer: Does A Plant Based Diet Help Prevent And Reverse Cardiovascular Disease And Cancer?, Chana Wircberg

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Modern Western societies seem to suffer from a veritable epidemic of serious diseases, two of the most serious of which are cardiovascular disease and cancer. In contrast, hunter and gatherer groups have a very low incidence of such diseases. Despite the diversity of hunter and gather diets, they all share the same characteristic: the absence of a Western diet. This suggests that there is something uniquely inflammatory about a Western diet, which is high in both fats and carbohydrates. Departures from a Western diet appear to result in better health. Experimental studies have shown that heart disease can be reversed …

How Compatible Is Cow’S Milk With The Human Immune System?, Mindy Knopfler Jan 2016

How Compatible Is Cow’S Milk With The Human Immune System?, Mindy Knopfler

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Cow’s milk has been part of the human diet for at least 8,000 years and provides a rich source of proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals. Despite its longstanding importance in human nutrition, questions remain about how compatible cow’s milk is with our immune system. Cow’s milk allergy (CMA) is the most common form of food allergy in infants and children and cow’s milk has been implicated in a number of immune-mediated disorders. Reviewing current research obtained through Google Scholar and Touro’s library database on CMA and the potential role of cow’s milk in systemic inflammation and autoimmunity reveals a tangle …

Artificial Sweeteners And Weight Gain: Fighting Or Feeding The Obesity Epidemic?, Shanna Frisch Jan 2016

Artificial Sweeteners And Weight Gain: Fighting Or Feeding The Obesity Epidemic?, Shanna Frisch

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Our world has developed an obsession with weight control and, as a result, has begun replacing high calorie foods with low-fat and non-caloric substitutes. Artificial sweeteners are a widely used solution to this growing problem. Though the intention when using artificial sweeteners is to lose weight, studies have shown that the opposite sometimes occurs. Researchers attempt to explain this surprising phenomenon with multiple hypotheses. Lack of appetite suppression and reward response may cause individuals to search for more food and to consume more calories. Artificial sweeteners can also have negative affects on biological mechanisms such as resting metabolic rate, as …

Effects Of Moderate Intake Of Alcohol On Coronary Heart Disease, Eli Derdik Jan 2016

Effects Of Moderate Intake Of Alcohol On Coronary Heart Disease, Eli Derdik

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The french paradox is caused by an inconsistency with scientific experimentation: The French have a very high intake of saturated fat and cholesterol, which is associated with coronary heart disease, yet they have un-commensurately low levels of deaths due to this disease. It has been proposed that alcohol, as a part of the French diet, is the factor that helps decrease the risk of heart disease in the French population by 20-30%. Research has been gathered from many medical journals to create a larger and more accurate perspective to determine if alcohol has any effect on coronary heart disease. Experiments …

Global South Christianity And Adventism: Trends And Implications, Christopher R. Mwashinga Jan 2016

Global South Christianity And Adventism: Trends And Implications, Christopher R. Mwashinga

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

In recent decades, Christianity has experienced two major phenomena as a religion: its decline in the global North (Europe and North America) and its rise in the global South (Africa, Asia, and South America). The Seventh-day Adventist Church as a denomination has experienced similar trends. The global South has become the home to the majority of Adventists in the world and the global North is now home to only a minority. Studies show that this southward movement in Christian and Adventist demographics may continue for several decades. Studies also indicate a steady growth of other world religions on the continent …
