A Novel Ion-Imprinted Polymeric Sorbent For Separation And Determination Of Chromium(Iii) Species In Wastewater, Barbara Lesniewska, Iwona Jakubowska, Elzbieta Zambrzycka, Beata Godlewska - Zylkiewicz
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A new chromium(III) ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) was prepared from a Cr(III)-nicotinate complex (template), acrylamide (functional monomer), and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (cross-linking agent) using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as the radical initiator. IIP was characterised and used as a selective sorbent for the solid-phase extraction of Cr(III) ions. The conditions for dynamic separation of Cr(III) on IIP were optimised. Cr(III) ions are selectively retained on the sorbent in a pH range from 9 to 10 and can be eluted with 4 mol L$^{-1}$ acetic acid. Cr(III) ions were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) with a detection limit of 0.08 $\mu $g mL$^{-1}$. …

The Effect Of Proanthocyanidin On Formaldehyde-Induced Toxicity In Rat Testes, Eni̇s Uluçam, Elvan Bakar
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: This study investigated the effect of proanthocyanidin (PA) against formaldehyde (FA)-induced lipid peroxidation damage and morphological changes in rat testes. Materials and methods: Twenty-one Wistar albino rats were randomized into 3 groups: control, FA, and FA + PA groups. Plasma and tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) and total sialic acid (TSA) levels were measured. Testes tissues were observed by light and electron microscopy. Results: TSA (plasma and tissue) levels decreased and MDA (plasma) significantly increased (P < 0.05) in rats treated with FA compared to the controls. Tissue MDA levels were not significantly different. Several necrotic changes were observed in testes tissues by light and electron microscopy. Disordering in epithelia of seminiferous tubules, vacuolization between germinal epithelium cells, and separated basement membranes were observed by light microscope. Immunopositivity in Leydig cells decreased in the FA group (P < 0.05). In the FA + PA group there were more immune Leydig cells reacting immune-positively than in the FA group (P < 0.05). Ultrastructurally, FA also caused disorganization and loss of mitochondrial cristae, and dilatation in endoplasmic reticulum in testes. Conclusion: The results suggest that PA has a protective effect on FA toxicity in testes.

Preserving Prairies: Understanding Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Invasive Annual Bromes In The Northern Great Plains, Isabel W. Ashton, Amy J. Symstad, Christopher J. Davis, Daniel J. Swanson
United States National Park Service: Publications
Two Eurasian invasive annual brome grasses, cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus), are well known for their impact in steppe ecosystems of the western United States where these grasses have altered fire regimes, reduced native plant diversity and abundance, and degraded wildlife habitat. Annual bromes are also abundant in the grasslands of the Northern Great Plains (NGP), but their impact and ecology are not as well studied. It is unclear whether the lessons learned from the steppe will translate to the mixed-grass prairie where native plant species are adapted to frequent fires and grazing. …

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
The whooping crane (Grus americana) is listed as endangered under the IUCN Red List, the United States Endangered Species Act, and the Canadian Species at Risk Act (BirdLife International 2012, CWS and USFWS 2007). A major focus of recovery efforts for this endangered species is reintroduction to establish new populations (CWS and USFWS 2007). Captive populations are critical as a source of individuals for reintroduction efforts and also serve as insurance populations. Currently, there are a total of 157 whooping cranes held in captive breeding centers across North America, with the largest at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) …

The Influence Of Self-Efficacy On Physical Activity In Older Adults With Diabetes, Heather Tonyaleigh Mcgee-Anderson
The Influence Of Self-Efficacy On Physical Activity In Older Adults With Diabetes, Heather Tonyaleigh Mcgee-Anderson
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes affects million individuals within the United States with the highest prevalence in older adults. Physical activity has been shown to improve diabetes control; yet older adults are significantly less physically active than national recommendations suggest. Higher levels of self-efficacy have been shown to increase physical activity in many populations. Bandura’s theoretical framework of self-efficacy has supported that a higher level of self-efficacy correlates with higher levels of physical activity. The research for this dissertation first explored a gap in the literature regarding older adults with diabetes as it relates to self-efficacy and physical activity with an integrative review. This …
