Circular Economy And System Thinking Framework In Design; Food System Design, Mehrafza Mirzazad Barijugh

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to bring the circular economy framework and system thinking into the process of design thinking. The traditional design process is made up of five steps: 1) Discover a challenge. 2) Interpret the challenge. 3) Create opportunities and ideas. 4) Develop a solution and experiment with it. 5) Evolve the idea. This project is structured upon a methodology generated to apply a circular system framework in design that begins with taking a holistic view of topic. This methodology structured into five phases. The first phase is referring to this approach as moving from Macrocosm to …

Large consortia have revealed hundreds of genetic loci associated with anthropometric traits, one trait at a time. We examined whether genetic variants affect body shape as a composite phenotype that is represented by a combination of anthropometric traits. We developed an approach that calculates averaged PCs (AvPCs) representing body shape derived from six anthropometric traits (body mass index, height, weight, waist and hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio). The first four AvPCs explain >99% of the variability, are heritable, and associate with cardiometabolic outcomes. We performed genome-wide association analyses for each body shape composite phenotype across 65 studies and meta-analysed summary statistics. …

Negotiated Voluntary Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals: The Strategy Against Compulsory Licensing, Daniel D. Kim Nov 2016

Negotiated Voluntary Licensing Of Pharmaceuticals: The Strategy Against Compulsory Licensing, Daniel D. Kim

American University Intellectual Property Brief

Every fight, every encounter in which the pharmaceutical industry has tried to push back against compulsory licensing has the industry losing ground. Fighting this issue, whether in the World Trade Organization or through local courts, is not working. Here, a number of other strategies to mitigate the threat of compulsory licensing are explored. Some are more successful than others. Perhaps the most successful strategy to date though is the “negotiated voluntary licensing” model, most famously employed by Gilead Pharmaceuticals in India. Negotiated voluntary licensing allows the licensor to control the terms of the licensing agreement, the scope of the market …

Role Of Nutrition And Physical Therapy In Maintaining Fat Free Mass And Muscle Strength During Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, Courtney Melissa Nordhus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a pediatric cancer treatment, but malnutrition and fat free mass (FFM) loss during the process induce negative outcomes. Tracking changes in body composition, physical activity, and handgrip strength (HGS) may determine the effectiveness of current nutrition and physical therapy in maintaining FFM. This prospective quality improvement study of 9 participants receiving first-time HSCT considered bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and HGS data at intake and discharge with nutrition, physical activity, medication administration, and incidence of graft versus host disease (GVHD) throughout admission. An overall loss of weight, FFM, and right and left HGS (p=0.009; p=0.020) and …

Wellness Interventions In An Asian American-Specific Mental Health Setting, Pui Kwan Ma Nov 2016

Wellness Interventions In An Asian American-Specific Mental Health Setting, Pui Kwan Ma

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) on average die 25 years sooner than individuals in the general population. The elevated mortality is mainly due to preventable medical conditions and barriers to care. Primary care-behavioral health integration and wellness interventions have shown to be effective in addressing the disparities. However, racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in the literature. In particular, the disparities in health conditions and access to care among Asian American immigrants with SMI are exacerbated by unique cultural and linguistic barriers in healthcare service delivery. The current thesis examined a multi-year multi-faceted wellness intervention designed for Asian American …

The Challenge Of Climate Change Adaptation For Agriculture: An Economically Oriented Review, Bruce A. Mccarl, Anastasia W. Thayer, Jason P. H. Jones

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

Climate change is occurring. Deviations from historic temperatures and precipitation plus increased frequency of extreme events are modifying agriculture systems globally. Adapting agricultural management practices offers a way to lessen the effects or exploit opportunities. Herein many aspects of the adaptation issue are discussed, including needs, strategies, observed actions, benefits, economic analysis approaches, role of public/private actors, limits, and project evaluation. We comment on the benefits and shortcomings of analytical methods and suggested economic efforts. Economists need to play a role in such diverse matters as projecting adaptation needs, designing adaptation incentives, and evaluating projects to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: A new disease class of syndromes, described as linkeropathies, which are derived from defects in the glycosaminoglycan-linker region as well as glycosaminoglycan-side chains of proteoglycans is increasingly being recognized as a cause of human disease. Proteoglycans are an essential component of the extracellular matrix. Defects in the enzymatic process of proteoglycan synthesis broadly occur due to the incorrect addition of side chains. Previously, homozygous missense variants within the B3GAT3 gene encoding beta 1,3 glucuronyltransferase 3(GlcAT-I) responsible for the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans have been described in 7 individuals.

CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, a 4-year-old patient with a severe phenotype …

An Investigation Into Spent Coffee Waste As A Renewable Source Of Bioactive Compounds And Industrially Important Sugars, Damhan Scully, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam Nov 2016

An Investigation Into Spent Coffee Waste As A Renewable Source Of Bioactive Compounds And Industrially Important Sugars, Damhan Scully, Amit Jaiswal, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam

Articles

Conventional coffee brewing techniques generate vast quantities of spent espresso grounds (SEGs) rich in lignocellulose and valuable bioactives. These bioactive compounds can be exploited as a nutraceutical or used in a range of food products, while breakdown of lignocellulose generates metabolizable sugars that can be used for the production of various high-value products such as biofuels, amino acids and enzymes. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulose in SEGs following a hydrothermal pretreatment. A maximum reducing sugar yield was obtained at the following optimized hydrolysis conditions: 4.97 g of pretreated SEGs, 120 h reaction …

Water Loss Rates And Desiccation Tolerances For Spiders And Crickets, Matthew Zach, Kevin E. Mccluney Nov 2016

Water Loss Rates And Desiccation Tolerances For Spiders And Crickets, Matthew Zach, Kevin E. Mccluney

Honors Projects

Despite the importance of water to living organisms, access varies across the globe with high variability over space and time. Seventy-five percent of the world’s freshwater alone is ice while 99% of unfrozen freshwater is underground (Winter et al. 1998). Understanding how terrestrial species respond to water availability and compensate for water stress can provide insight to their behavior, ecology and physiology. The goal of this research was to examine the differences in the evaporative water loss rates and desiccation tolerances of Hogna carolinensis and Acheta domesticus. First, an experiment was conducted to quantify the rate of evaporative water …

Using Sensitivity Analyses For Unobserved Confounding To Address Covariate Measurement Error In Propensity Score Methods, Kara E. Rudolph, Elizabeth A. Stuart Nov 2016

Using Sensitivity Analyses For Unobserved Confounding To Address Covariate Measurement Error In Propensity Score Methods, Kara E. Rudolph, Elizabeth A. Stuart

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Propensity score methods are a popular tool to control for confounding in observational data, but their bias-reduction properties are threatened by covariate measurement error. There are few easy-to-implement methods to correct for such bias. We describe and demonstrate how existing sensitivity analyses for unobserved confounding---propensity score calibration, Vanderweele and Arah's bias formulas, and Rosenbaum's sensitivity analysis---can be adapted to address this problem. In a simulation study, we examined the extent to which these sensitivity analyses can correct for several measurement error structures: classical, systematic differential, and heteroscedastic covariate measurement error. We then apply these approaches to address covariate measurement error …

Inhibition Of The Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenase Siderophore A (Sida) Blocks Siderophore Biosynthesis And Aspergillus Fumigatus Growth, Julia S. Martín Del Campo, Nancy Vogelaar, Karishma Tolani, Karina Kizjakina, Kim Harich, Pablo Sobrado Nov 2016

Inhibition Of The Flavin-Dependent Monooxygenase Siderophore A (Sida) Blocks Siderophore Biosynthesis And Aspergillus Fumigatus Growth, Julia S. Martín Del Campo, Nancy Vogelaar, Karishma Tolani, Karina Kizjakina, Kim Harich, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aspergillus fumigatus is an opportunistic fungal pathogen and the most common causative agent of fatal invasive mycoses. The flavin-dependent monooxygenase siderophore A (SidA) catalyzes the oxygen and NADPH dependent hydroxylation of l-ornithine (l-Orn) to N5-l-hydroxyornithine in the biosynthetic pathway of hydroxamate-containing siderophores in A. fumigatus. Deletion of the gene that codes for SidA has shown that it is essential in establishing infection in mice models. Here, a fluorescence polarization high-throughput assay was used to screen a 2320 compound library for inhibitors of SidA. Celastrol, a natural quinone methide, was identified as a noncompetitive inhibitor of SidA with a MIC value …
