Linking Transcriptional And Physiological Responses To High Light Stress In A Wild-Type And A Photomorphogenic Tomato Mutant, Jordyn Radke
Linking Transcriptional And Physiological Responses To High Light Stress In A Wild-Type And A Photomorphogenic Tomato Mutant, Jordyn Radke
Theses and Dissertations
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicon) is the leading vegetable crop worldwide and an important part of a healthy human diet. In this study we used Next-Generation Sequencing, metabolomics and gene ontologies to study the effects of high light stress on the photomorphogenic hp-2dg tomato mutant. Wild-type (cv. ‘Manapal’) and mutant plants were grown for six weeks under low light and transferred to high light for one week. Illumina-based RNA Sequencing was performed and analysis of differential gene expression identified over 650 transcripts that were strongly regulated by light intensity (FC>4, p2,p<0,01). HPLC analysis of tomato leaves showed differential accumulation of phenylpropanoid metabolites such as chlorogenic acid, rutin, and caffeoylglucaric acid which was strongly dependent on genotype and light condition. Our findings show insightful differences between the wildtype and the photomorphogenic mutant as well as novel genes involved in high light adaptation in plants.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with most of the population surviving on $1 per day. Health outcomes among Haitians are poor, with a life expectancy 16 years less than the US. The majority of health research in Haiti has been narrow, focusing on specific issues like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, and cholera. Unfortunately, this has resulted an incomplete understanding of health in Haiti. This study aims to fill this gap by describing the most common health complaints, how they differ by age, sex, and temporality, and if there are associations between these health issues and environmental …

Problems Of Multi-Species Organisms: Endosymbionts To Holobionts, David C. Queller, Joan E. Strassmann
Biology Faculty Research
The organism is one of the fundamental concepts of biology and has been at the center of many discussions about biological individuality, yet what exactly it is can be confusing. The definition that we find generally useful is that an organism is a unit in which all the subunits have evolved to be highly cooperative, with very little conflict. We focus on how often organisms evolve from two or more formerly independent organisms. Two canonical transitions of this type—replicators clustered in cells and endosymbiotic organelles within host cells—demonstrate the reality of this kind of evolutionary transition and suggest conditions that …

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown fluid replacement beverages ingested after exercise can affect hydration biomarkers. No specific hydration marker is universally accepted as an ideal rehydration parameter following strenuous exercise. Currently, changes in body mass are used as a parameter during post-exercise hydration. Additional parameters are needed to fully appreciate and better understand rehydration following strenuous exercise. This randomized, double-blind, parallel-arm trial assessed the effect of high-pH water on four biomarkers after exercise-induced dehydration.
METHODS: One hundred healthy adults (50 M/50 F, 31 ± 6 years of age) were enrolled at a single clinical research center in Camden, NJ and …

Examining The Community Food Environments For Elementary School-Aged Children In The City Of London And Middlesex County, Ontario, Catherine Dubreck
GIS Day
Childhood obesity is a growing public health issue of global importance. In Canada, one in four children and youth are overweight or obese. Research suggests diet plays a crucial role in childhood obesity, and that prevalence rates of overweight or obesity among children in a neighborhood may relate to area socioeconomic characteristics and other environmental factors. The community nutrition environment (e.g., the type, location, and accessibility of food outlets) and the consumer nutrition environment (e.g., the price, promotion, placement, and availability of healthy options and nutrition information) can influence dietary habits, including the specific meal a child orders from a …

For a long while, the controversy surrounding several bone tools coming from pre-Upper Palaeolithic contexts favoured the view of Homo sapiens as the only species of the genus Homo capable of modifying animal bones into specialised tools. However, evidence such as South African Early Stone Age modified bones, European Lower Palaeolithic flaked bone tools, along with Middle and Late Pleistocene bone retouchers, led to a re-evaluation of the conception of Homo sapiens as the exclusive manufacturer of specialised bone tools. The evidence presented herein include use wear and bone residues identified on two flint scrapers as well as a sawing …

Validity Of Methods In Measuring Resting Energy Expenditure In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Ashley Marie Hobar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Evaluation of nutrition status is imperative for pediatric oncology patients due to prevalence of malnutrition and its effects. Methods used to evaluate nutrition status over- and underestimate energy needs. The purpose of the project was to determine if the Medgem and WHO predictive equations predict resting energy expenditure (REE) when compared to a traditional indirect calorimeter. Participants, 7-18 years of age, had testing completed on a traditional indirect calorimeter, Medgem, and energy estimation by WHO equation. Post hoc pairwise comparisons revealed all three methods were significantly different from one another (all p<0.0001), suggesting REE be measured by metabolic cart.
