Impact Of A Higher Minimum Wage On Enrollment Of Snap, Victoria Perez-Zetune Jan 2016

Impact Of A Higher Minimum Wage On Enrollment Of Snap, Victoria Perez-Zetune

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper investigates the effect that minimum wage policy has on enrollment in public assistance programs, specifically the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, SNAP. If raising the minimum wage decreases enrollment in SNAP, this could uncover a method to reduce spending without eliminating programs. Using a time-demeaned model to account for fixed effects, I take advantage of the variation in the minimum wage in the 50 states between 1998 and 2014. I estimated that on average an increase in minimum wage in a prior year results in a decrease in SNAP participation by 3.95%.

Literature Review Relating To The Current Context And Discourse Surrounding Indigenous Early Childhood Education, School Readiness And Transition Programs To Primary School, Jacynta Krakouer Jan 2016

Literature Review Relating To The Current Context And Discourse Surrounding Indigenous Early Childhood Education, School Readiness And Transition Programs To Primary School, Jacynta Krakouer

Indigenous Education Research

Since the educational experiences of Aboriginal Australians are often framed from a ‘deficit’ perspective, whereby the failures of Indigenous people to engage with the mainstream educational system are seen as the ‘problem’, an alternative approach to Indigenous early childhood education discourse is preferable. This alternative approach highlights the strengths that many Aboriginal children possess when commencing school, strengths that may result from Indigenous child-rearing practices. Consequently, this literature review utilises a strengths-based perspective for Aboriginal early childhood education and school readiness, noting that Aboriginal children are frequently expected to adapt to a foreign educational system whereby school expectations differ from …

The Eubanks Family: A Porción Of Edinburg, The University Of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Community Historical Archaeology Project With Schools Program (Chaps), Juan L. Gonzalez, Janette Garcia, Roseann Bacha-Garza

Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Publications

Almost forty years ago, Kenneth and Irene Eubanks came to Edinburg to settle in what would be their final resting place after decades of traveling the world. After a successful professional career as an agricultural economist, a professor and a high-level official for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Kenneth Eubanks found the perfect location to literally "plant roots" with his family in a place referred to as the Magic Valley of Texas. The research conducted for this book represents historical, archaeological, geological and biological data that will forever be preserved within this volume collection of human-land interactions …

The Associations Of Selected Lifestyle Patterns And Lung Cancer Risk: An Evidence-Based Update, Joanna Kruk, Basil H. Aboul-Enein Jan 2016

The Associations Of Selected Lifestyle Patterns And Lung Cancer Risk: An Evidence-Based Update, Joanna Kruk, Basil H. Aboul-Enein

Health & Wellness Department Faculty Publications and Research

Diagnosis of lung cancer (LC) has been fraught with difficulty and by the time of definitive diagnosis, most patients are in later stages of the disease. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that lifestyle behaviors play an etiological role in LC risk; however data in the literature on this topic often appears inconclusive or require further study. Understanding of the mechanisms operating between lifestyle patterns and their impact on LC is important for the disease’s prevention and treatment. The purpose of this study was to review the current evidence on the role of diet, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, smoking, alcohol …

A broad-based research team developed a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant educational website for women with ovarian cancer to improve the quality of supportive oncology care. Prior to a randomized clinical trial of the website, initial usability testing was implemented to evaluate the website. The initial review found that 165/247 checklist items had sufficient information to allow for evaluation with the website achieving an overall score of 63%. By category, the lowest scores were for the Home Page, Task Orientation, Page Layout & Visual Design, and Help, Feedback & Error Tolerance. Major issues thought to potentially impede actual …

Investigating The Efficacy Of Pre-Licensure Clinical Interprofessional Education, Brenda Kay Wheeler Jan 2016

Investigating The Efficacy Of Pre-Licensure Clinical Interprofessional Education, Brenda Kay Wheeler

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Nurses are expected to work collaboratively with other health professionals after graduation; however, most have not been taught to work in teams and are ill-prepared to work in collaborative relationships. Interprofessional Education (IPE) may better prepare nursing students for teamwork. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of pre-licensure clinical IPE for nursing students. It was hypothesized that nursing students who participate in clinical IPE have more positive attitudes toward health care teams than nursing students who do not participate in clinical IPE as evidenced by higher scores on the Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS), …

Np Students' Perceptions Of Weight Loss Treatment Using Cam, Terri Miller Jan 2016

Np Students' Perceptions Of Weight Loss Treatment Using Cam, Terri Miller

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Americans use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities to treat and prevent disease and to enhance quality of life. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are in a unique position to use CAM in patient care and educate patients about potential benefits and risks. NPs need more information to effectively use CAM as treatment for weight loss. To address this need an educational intervention was developed. A qualitative key informant study was conducted to determine NP students’ perceptions of using CAM following an education intervention on CAM. A purposive sample of NP students from a university pharmacology class was study participants. The nurse …

Enhanced Salt Tolerance Of Transgenic Tobacco Expressing A Wheat Salt Tolerance Gene, Musa Kavas, Mehmet Cengi̇z Baloğlu, Ayşe Meral Yücel, Hüseyi̇n Avni̇ Öktem Jan 2016

Enhanced Salt Tolerance Of Transgenic Tobacco Expressing A Wheat Salt Tolerance Gene, Musa Kavas, Mehmet Cengi̇z Baloğlu, Ayşe Meral Yücel, Hüseyi̇n Avni̇ Öktem

Turkish Journal of Biology

Soil salinity is one of the most important limiting factors of agricultural productivity in the world. The Triticum aestivum salt tolerance-related gene (TaSTRG) possesses a functional response to salt and drought stress conditions. A variety of stress factors, such as salt, drought, abscisic acid, and cold, may induce the expression of TaSTRG in wheat. In this study, the TaSTRG gene was transferred to tobacco via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Overexpression of TaSTRG in transgenic tobacco plants indicated higher salt tolerance and mediated more vigorous growth than in wild-type plants. Under salt stress conditions, the transgenic tobacco plants had higher germination and survival …

Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology

Gallic acid (GA), a polyphenol, is widely found in numerous fruits and vegetables, particularly in hickory nuts. In the present study, we found that gallic acid, a natural phenolic compound isolated from fruits and vegetables, had a more potent growth inhibitory effect on two ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR-3 and A2780/CP70, than the effect on a normal ovarian cell line, IOSE-364. These results demonstrated that GA selectively inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Gene expression was examined by ELISA and western blot analysis, and gene pathways were examined by luciferase assay. It was found that GA inhibited VEGF secretion and …

Systematic Review Of Metabolic Syndrome Biomarkers: A Panel For Early Detection, Management, And Risk Stratification In The West Virginian Population, Krithika Srikanthan, Andrew Feyh, Haresh Visweshwar, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Komal Sodhi Jan 2016

Systematic Review Of Metabolic Syndrome Biomarkers: A Panel For Early Detection, Management, And Risk Stratification In The West Virginian Population, Krithika Srikanthan, Andrew Feyh, Haresh Visweshwar, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Komal Sodhi

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome represents a cluster of related metabolic abnormalities, including central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance, with central obesity and insulin resistance in particular recognized as causative factors. These metabolic derangements present significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is commonly recognized as the primary clinical outcome, although other outcomes are possible. Metabolic syndrome is a progressive condition that encompasses a wide array of disorders with specific metabolic abnormalities presenting at different times. These abnormalities can be detected and monitored via serum biomarkers. This review will compile a list of promising biomarkers that are associated with metabolic …

The Commensurability Myth In Antitrust, Rebecca H. Allensworth Jan 2016

The Commensurability Myth In Antitrust, Rebecca H. Allensworth

Vanderbilt Law Review

Modern antitrust law pursues a seemingly unitary goal: competition. In fact, competition-whether defined as a process or as a set of outcomes associated with competitive markets-is multifaceted. What are offered in antitrust cases as procompetitive and anticompetitive effects are typically qualitatively different, and trading them off is as much an exercise in judgment as mathematics. But despite the inevitability of value judgments in antitrust cases, courts have perpetuated a commensurability myth, claiming to evaluate "net" competitive effect as if the pros and cons of a restraint of trade are in the same unit of measure. The myth is attractive to …

Functional Analysis Of Rpl22: Coordinating Differentiation Signals And Developmental Gene Translation To Promote Cell Fate Decisions, Stephen Kim Jan 2016

Functional Analysis Of Rpl22: Coordinating Differentiation Signals And Developmental Gene Translation To Promote Cell Fate Decisions, Stephen Kim

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The execution of meiosis and spore formation in S. cerevisiae requires a transient transcription program that is initiated by Ime I-dependent destruction of the repressor Ume6. IMEJ transcription is tightly contro1led by both cell type and nutritional cues but how its translation is regulated has been unknown. This study demonstrates that Rpl22A and Rpl22B, eukaryotic-specific ribosomal protein paralogs of the 60S large subunit, are required for efficient Ime I translation. While IME1 mRNA is induced normally in the absence of both para logs following transfer to sporulation medium, Ume6 remains stabilized, downstream early meiotic gene remain repressed, and development is …

Forage Yields In Turkey Hill Wilderness In East Texas For White-Tailed Deer, Brian P. Oswald, Kenneth W. Farrish, Bret Gentzler Jan 2016

Forage Yields In Turkey Hill Wilderness In East Texas For White-Tailed Deer, Brian P. Oswald, Kenneth W. Farrish, Bret Gentzler

Faculty Publications

Wilderness areas are often considered quality areas where natural processes occur without human activity. It is often assumed that these unmanaged areas will provide and support quality wildlife habitat. The objective of this study was to evaluate the forage production and stocking potential of an unmanaged wilderness area in east Texas. Four different community types were evaluated for forage yield, forage availability, and browse utilization for white-tailed deer. Results show that although a wide range of forage yields were measured in the spring, summer forage yield did not differ among the various communities. Availability also differed between community types, but …

Aristotle's Clivus Naturae, John Thorp Jan 2016

Aristotle's Clivus Naturae, John Thorp

Philosophy Presentations

It is usually thought that Aristotle's understanding of the soul sees it has having four distinct parts, cumulatively arranged, resulting in a kind of scala or ladder: all living things have the nutritive and reproductive soul; animals have, in addition, the sensitive soul, and most of them also the locomotive soul; only humans have all these plus the intellective soul. This ladder-like picture emerges from his theoretical work de Anima. In his more empirical studies, though, the discreteness of these levels is softened, and the image is more that of a clivus or slope, rather than a scala or ladder …
