Can Functional Traits Predict Plant Community Response To Global Change?, Sarah Kimball, Jennifer L. Funk, Marko J. Spasojevic, Katharine N. Suding, Scot Parker, Michael K. Goulden
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
One primary goal at the intersection of community ecology and global change biology is to identify functional traits that are useful for predicting plant community response to global change. We used observations of community composition from a long-term field experiment in two adjacent plant communities (grassland and coastal sage shrub) to investigate how nine key plant functional traits were related to altered water and nitrogen availability following fire. We asked whether the functional responses of species found in more than one community type were context dependent and whether community-weighted mean and functional diversity were significantly altered by water and nitrogen …

Protection Of Alaska Native Customary And Traditional Hunting And Fishing Rights Through Title Viii Of Anilca, John Sky Starkey
Protection Of Alaska Native Customary And Traditional Hunting And Fishing Rights Through Title Viii Of Anilca, John Sky Starkey
Alaska Law Review
This paper analyzes the degree to which the administration of Title VIII of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) of 1980 protects customary and traditional hunting and fishing by Alaska Natives and their tribal communities. A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) entered into by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Kuskokwim Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (KRITFC) for co-management of subsistence fisheries will be used as a means to analyze the issue. This paper concludes with suggestions for improving the administration of Title VIII to better secure Alaska Native and Tribal rights for self-determination.

Parallel Session: Translating Practice Theory Into Consumer Research With Coherent Research Strategies, Yoon Lee, Amrul Asraf Mohd- Any, Norbani Che-Ha
International Conference on Marketing
This article contributes to the underexplored methodological issues of translating practice theory into empirical consumer research. Practice theory conceptualises consumption as meaningful outcomes of social accomplishments which decentres the traditional influential roles of consumer emphasizes the performative dimension of the doings, saying, and material objects. Because consumers involved with practices are treated merely as „carriers‟, the analysis focus is shifted from consumer to consumption practice. However, practices are difficult to access, observe, measure or represent because practices are hidden, tacit, and often difficult to articulate. These challenges and specifically methodological issues of social practice theory are seldom acknowledged and addressed. …

Head Start Since The War On Poverty: Taking On New Challenges To Address Persistent School Readiness Gaps, Pamela Joshi, Kimberly Geronimo, Dolores Acevedo-Garcia
Head Start Since The War On Poverty: Taking On New Challenges To Address Persistent School Readiness Gaps, Pamela Joshi, Kimberly Geronimo, Dolores Acevedo-Garcia
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
This article explores Head Start’s overall effectiveness in improving school readiness outcomes and its potential to reduce gaps in these outcomes in light of changing program goals, resource and funding capacity, and the demographic changes in the low-income child population it serves. Although not an explicit goal of the Head Start program, we assess whether and how the program can address reducing school readiness gaps between children of different racial and ethnic backgrounds and income groups. Because of changing policy priorities and targeting vulnerable groups of children with diverse needs, meeting Head Start goals within funding constraints can be challenging. …

Disrupting Poverty: The Impact of Academic Optimism and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors on Student Achievement in California High-Poverty Secondary Charter Schools
by Derek King
One of the byproducts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the commissioning of a study by the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare to better understand the disposition of the nation’s educational system. By 1966, the most comprehensive educational study to date was completed, the Equality of Educational Opportunity (Coleman et al., 1966). The findings shocked the nation by concluding that familial poverty restricted a student’s academic achievement, rendering all school-based interventions …

Auditory Fatigue Model Applications To Predict Noise Induced Hearing Loss In Human And Chinchilla, Pengfei Sun, Daniel Fox, Kathleen Campbell, Jun Qin
Articles
Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains a severe health problem worldwide. Current noise metrics and models have assessment limitations on gradually developing NIHL (GDNIHL). In this study, we apply a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model to quantitatively assess the impact of basilar membrane (BM) movement on GDNIHL. The transfer functions of chinchilla and human auditory systems, including the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filters to simulate the inner ear responses, are applied to obtain BM velocity distribution. Chinchilla and human experimental hearing loss data are used to validate the proposed CVL model’s effectiveness. The results reveal that the developed CVL …

CNU Journal of Higher Education
While 4Ps is part of Good Governance and Anti-Corruption (GGAC) Plan of the Aquino Administration, it is not an identified Open Government Partnership initiative. The researchers delved into how the OGP core principles are resonated through the 4Ps based on the OGP initiative facets: credibility of partnership, strength and innovation in open government approaches, evidence of results, sustainability and special recognition. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research method utilizing a standardized questionnaire, Open Government Awards-The Scoring Process. In order to discuss the issues and concerns of the grand challenges of the OGP Action Plan, a Multiple Stakeholder Approach was …

Effects Of Temperature On Transcriptome And Cuticular Hydrocarbon Expression In Ecologically Differentiated Populations Of Desert Drosophila, William J. Etges, Cassia De Oliveira, Sub Hash Rajpurohit, Allen G. Gibbs
Life Sciences Faculty Research
We assessed the effects of temperature differences on gene expression using whole-transcriptome microarrays and cuticular hydrocarbon variation in populations of cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis. Four populations from Baja California and mainland Mexico and Arizona were each reared on two different host cacti, reared to sexual maturity on laboratory media, and adults were exposed for 12 hr to 15, 25, or 35°C. Temperature differences influenced the expression of 3,294 genes, while population differences and host plants affected >2,400 each in adult flies. Enriched, functionally related groups of genes whose expression changed at high temperatures included heat response genes, as well as genes …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-protein-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression. Diet and lifestyle factors have been hypothesized to be involved in the regulation of miRNA expression. In this study it was hypothesized that diet and lifestyle factors are associated with miRNA expression. Data from 1,447 cases of colorectal cancer to evaluate 34 diet and lifestyle variables using miRNA expression in normal colorectal mucosa as well as for differential expression between paired carcinoma and normal tissue were used. miRNA data were obtained using an Agilent platform. Multiple comparisons were adjusted for using the false discovery rate q-value. There were 250 …

An Orphanage In Mexico: Four United Nations' Human Rights Of Children And Wolins' Prerequisites For Efficient Group Care Through The View Of The Manager And Staff, Lucia Beatriz Quesnel Galván
Dissertations and Theses
In Mexico there are officially 1.8 million orphaned children, without counting non-orphaned children deprived of family, who also need care; of these, only 657,000 are living in 703 orphanages. Mexico's government invests less than 2% of its budget toward protection of children. There is a lack of substantive research or official assessment of orphanages. According to the scant research found, the children's human rights most frequently violated in Mexican orphanages are the rights to nutrition and health care, to be protected from further victimization, to free expression and participation, and to not be exploited. This study was carried out through …

Using Catchment Modeling Framework For Modeling Of Water And Pesticide Fate At Hillslope Scale, K. Djabelkhir, P. Kratt, C. Lauvernet, N. Carluer
Open Water Journal
Control and reduction of water contamination by pesticides are major issues for the protection of aquatic ecosystems. In order to better understand and formalize the main pathways of pesticides transport, the Catchment Modeling Framework (Kraft et al., 2011) has been chosen, which is an open source hydrological framework providing a spatial distribution with an object-oriented approach. Modularity characteristic of CMF, allows users given a modular design to our landscape, and to choose equations describing flux connection between hydrological response units either in surface and subsurface, and to add new modules and functions.
The aim of this study is to better …

Monte Carlo Based Parameterization And Uncertainty Analysis Of A Coupled Crop Growth And Hydrological Model, T. Houska, S. Multsch, P. Kraft, H.-G. Frede, L. Breuer
Open Water Journal
Abstract computer simulations are widely used to support decision making and planning in the agriculture sector. The model structure and parameterization are important to achieve reliable results. On the one hand, many 1D crop growth models are using simplified hydrological processes and structures, e.g. by the use of a small number of soil layers or by the application of simple water flow approaches. On the other hand, in many hydrological models crop growth processes are poorly represented. Hence, fully coupled models with a high degree of process representation, would allow analysing the dynamic behaviour of the soil-plant interface in more …

Type IV pilus (T4P) systems are complex molecular machines that polymerize major pilin proteins into thin filaments displayed on bacterial surfaces. Pilus functions require rapid extension and depolymerization of the pilus, powered by the assembly and retraction ATPases, respectively. A set of low abundance minor pilins influences pilus dynamics by unknown mechanisms. The Vibrio cholerae toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) is among the simplest of the T4P systems, having a single minor pilin TcpB and lacking a retraction ATPase. Here we show that TcpB, like its homolog CofB, initiates pilus assembly. TcpB co-localizes with the pili but at extremely low levels, equivalent …

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies
In the first two decades after its release, methane, a green house gas, is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Historically, atmospheric concentrations of methane remained fairly stable at around 750 ppb, significantly less than today’s levels of 1,800 ppb. Unfortunately, agricultural activity accounts for about one-fifth of total global greenhouse gas emissions, while the current production of ruminants contributes nearly 80% of these emissions due to their large populations, body size and appetites, and the anaerobic microbial fermentation that occurs during digestion. Because of methane’s severe impact on the climate, methane emissions, specifically due to the production of …
