Subramanian, Alice Boylan, James Hanje, R. Todd Stravitz, William M. Lee, Acute Liver Failure Study Group

Internal Medicine Publications

Introduction

Acute liver failure (ALF) is an ideal condition for use of a checklist. Our aims were to develop a checklist for the management of ALF in the intensive care unit (ICU) and assess the usability of the checklist among multiple providers.

Methods

The initial checklist was developed from published guidelines and expert opinion. The checklist underwent pilot testing at 11 academic liver transplant centers in the US and Canada. An anonymous, written survey was used to assess the usability and quality of the checklist. Written comments were used to improve the checklist following the pilot testing period.

Intravenous Vitamin C Administered As Adjunctive Therapy For Recurrent Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Amit Bharara, Catherine Grossman, Daniel Grinnan, Aamer Syed, Bernard Fisher, Christine Dewilde, Ramesh Natarajan, Alpha A. (Berry) Fowler

Internal Medicine Publications

This case report summarizes the first use of intravenous vitamin C employed as an adjunctive interventional agent in the therapy of recurrent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The two episodes of ARDS occurred in a young female patient with Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, a rare, sporadically occurring, noninherited disorder that is characterized by extensive gastrointestinal polyposis and malabsorption. Prior to the episodes of sepsis, the patient was receiving nutrition via chronic hyperalimentation administered through a long-standing central venous catheter. The patient became recurrently septic with Gram positive cocci which led to two instances of ARDS. This report describes the broad-based general critical …

Development And Validation Of Uplc/Ms/Ms Methods For Quantification Of Gangliosides In The Clinical Study Of Ganglioside Gm3 Synthase Deficiency, Qianyang Huang Jan 2016

Development And Validation Of Uplc/Ms/Ms Methods For Quantification Of Gangliosides In The Clinical Study Of Ganglioside Gm3 Synthase Deficiency, Qianyang Huang

ETD Archive

Gangliosides are a large subclass of glycosphingolipids that structurally characterized by the addition of mono- or poly-sialyated carbohydrate moieties onto the ceramide scaffold. They are presented at significant abundance in the central nervous system of vertebrates. Their interactions with trans-membrane receptors, especially receptor tyrosine kinase, are believed to play critical roles in modulating signal transduction events during cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and adhesion. Furthermore, the disruption and dysfunction on their metabolism have been found to be associated with various neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer disease, Parkinson’s disease, and GM3 synthase deficiency. GM3 synthase deficiency (GSD) is a newly identified neurological …

Burden And Depression Among Caregivers Of Visually Impaired Patients In A Canadian Population, Zainab Khan, Puneet S. Braich, Karim Rahim, Jaspreet S. Rayat, Lin Xing, Munir Iqbal, Karim Mohamed Mohamed, Sanjay Sharma, David Almeida

Ophthalmology Publications

Purpose/Background. This study reports the degree of burden and the proportion at risk for depression among individuals who provide care to visually impaired patients. Study Design. This is clinic-based, cross-sectional survey in a tertiary care hospital. Methods. Caregivers were considered unpaid family members for patients whose sole impairment was visual. Patients were stratified by vision in their better seeing eye into two groups: Group 1 had visual acuity between 6/18 and 6/60 and Group 2 were those who had 6/60 or worse. Burden was evaluated by the Burden Index of Caregivers and the prevalence of being at …

The Lived Experience Of Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review And Meta-Synthesis, Joseph Walsh, Jacqueline Corcoran, Paula Crooks, Nathan Cooke, Cory Cummings

Social Work Publications

The purpose of this meta-synthesis was to review the available qualitative research on the lived experience of persons with bipolar disorder in order to find common themes that may enhance practitioner understanding. In this meta-synthesis, limited to studies conducted in the United States, 12 studies involving 234 participants met the authors’ inclusion criteria, and the following four major crosscutting themes, with subthemes, were identified: the process of acceptance of the diagnosis; its negative impact on relationships; internal coping strategies; and reliance on social support. Implications of these findings for direct practice are explored.

Neighborhood Walkability And Health, Edward F. Ansello Jan 2016

Neighborhood Walkability And Health, Edward F. Ansello

Director's Editorials from Age in Action

The apparent benefit of neighborhood walkability suggests that it may be an important health-related consideration in the lives of everyday people. Most of the elements in the walkability index reflect components in the environment, so these may be relevant across the continuum of impairments, meaning that walkable neighborhoods themselves may have positive impact on the daily lives of people with physical or intellectual disabilities.

Mechanical Loading Attenuates Radiation-Induced Bone Loss In Bone Marrow Transplanted Mice, Peter M. Govey, Yue Zhang, Henry J. Donahue Jan 2016

Mechanical Loading Attenuates Radiation-Induced Bone Loss In Bone Marrow Transplanted Mice, Peter M. Govey, Yue Zhang, Henry J. Donahue

Biomedical Engineering Publications

Exposure of bone to ionizing radiation, as occurs during radiotherapy for some localized malignancies and blood or bone marrow cancers, as well as during space travel, incites dose-dependent bone morbidity and increased fracture risk. Rapid trabecular and endosteal bone loss reflects acutely increased osteoclastic resorption as well as decreased bone formation due to depletion of osteoprogenitors. Because of this dysregulation of bone turnover, bone’s capacity to respond to a mechanical loading stimulus in the aftermath of irradiation is unknown. We employed a mouse model of total body irradiation and bone marrow transplantation simulating treatment of hematologic cancers, hypothesizing that compression …

The Pathogen-Occupied Vacuoles Of Anaplasma Phagocytophilum And Anaplasma Marginale Interact With The Endoplasmic Reticulum, Hilary K. Truchan, Chelsea L. Cockburn, Kathryn S. Hebert, Forgivemore Magunda, Susan M. Noh, Jason A. Carlyon Jan 2016

The Pathogen-Occupied Vacuoles Of Anaplasma Phagocytophilum And Anaplasma Marginale Interact With The Endoplasmic Reticulum, Hilary K. Truchan, Chelsea L. Cockburn, Kathryn S. Hebert, Forgivemore Magunda, Susan M. Noh, Jason A. Carlyon

Microbiology and Immunology Publications

The genus Anaplasma consists of tick-transmitted obligate intracellular bacteria that invade white or red blood cells to cause debilitating and potentially fatal infections. A. phagocytophilum, a human and veterinary pathogen, infects neutrophils to cause granulocytic anaplasmosis. A. marginale invades bovine erythrocytes. Evidence suggests that both species may also infect endothelial cells in vivo. In mammalian and arthropod host cells, A. phagocytophilum and A. marginale reside in host cell derived pathogen-occupied vacuoles (POVs). While it was recently demonstrated that the A. phagocytophilum-occupied vacuole (ApV) intercepts membrane traffic from the trans-Golgi network, it is unclear if it or …

Making Sense Of The Future Of Post-Secondary Education, Michael A. Rostek Ph.D. Jan 2016

Making Sense Of The Future Of Post-Secondary Education, Michael A. Rostek Ph.D.

System and Institutional Design and Transformation

The complexity and uncertainty of today’s global environment has created a bewildering array of interactions and interdependencies across all societal sectors including the educational sector. While many believe that modern communication and information technology reduces uncertainty and complexity, paradoxically, the "real effect is the opposite: information overload leads to a "poverty of attention" (Nye, 2002, p. 43) that complicates the process of filtering out the critical signals from the distracting noise" (Habegger, 2010, p. 49). Past methods for examining and understating this environment have proven to be ineffective in this fast-moving environment and sector leaders are now required to systematically …

Examining Academic Performance Among Pathway And Non-Pathway Health Sciences Students, Maurice Digiuseppe, Bil Goodman, Jennifer Percival, Arlene De La Rocha, Fabiola Longo

Credit Transfer and Recognition

Pathway programs providing opportunities for students to more efficiently earn university degrees and college diplomas are proliferating in Canada and internationally. In Ontario, Canada, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Durham College (DC) have jointly provided pathway programs for over a decade. These programs, in fields including science, health sciences (allied health sciences, kinesiology, nursing), social science and humanities (legal studies, criminology, commerce), nuclear power, and education (adult education, early childhood studies), facilitate inter-institutional transitions, and enable college graduates to obtain a 4-year (honours) university degree with as little as two additional years of study. This paper …
