Delayed Cord Clamping Impact On Transitional Outcomes Of The Newborn, Ann E. Rice Jan 2016

Delayed Cord Clamping Impact On Transitional Outcomes Of The Newborn, Ann E. Rice

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Currently in the United States, after a baby is born, the umbilical cord is immediately clamped; this is a routine obstetric procedure despite lack of evidence supporting this practice (Elchenbaum-Pikser, 2009). The practice of cord clamping varies with each provider from immediate cord clamping, to delayed cord clamping (which can vary from 1 to 5 minutes) to cord clamping after pulsation of the cord ceases. The procedure of cord clamping is a practice choice made by each medical provider and is based largely on personal preference, not evidence. Purpose: The purpose of this review and synthesis of literature is …

Non-Antibiotic Alternatives For Reducing Antepartum Group B Streptococcus Colonization, Rebecca M. Smith Jan 2016

Non-Antibiotic Alternatives For Reducing Antepartum Group B Streptococcus Colonization, Rebecca M. Smith

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Streptococcus agalactiae (known as Group B strep, or GBS) is a bacterium that resides in the gastrointestinal tract and/or vaginal canal and is typically benign, but during pregnancy and birth it can potentially colonize the neonate, causing early-onset group B streptococcal disease (EOGBSD) of the neonate. The use of antibiotics has reduced the morbidity and mortality associated with neonatal infections, but it is not an entirely effective means of preventing the infections and the development of antibiotic resistance may render antibiotics ineffective for this purpose. Alternative methods of preventing GBS colonization are in use by consumers and out-of-hospital birth …

A Resource Manual To College And University Academic Return For Young Adults With A Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Rachel Gromek, Emily Hermanson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Purpose: Reportedly, in the United States 75% of traumatic brain injuries that occur each year are referred to as mild (Centers for Disease Control Prevention, 2010). Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of disability each year with the highest prevalence being between ages 15-24 years (Willmott, Ponsford, Downing, & Carty, 2014). The greatest deficits experienced by college or university students with a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are cognitive, psychosocial, and physical (Kennedy, Krause, & O’Brien, 2014; Marschark, Richtsmeier, Richardson, Crovitz, & Henry, 2000). The purpose of this project was to address the limited resources available to individuals with …

An Exploratory Study Of Patient Falls, Jeffrey A. Coto, Coleen Wilder Jan 2016

An Exploratory Study Of Patient Falls, Jeffrey A. Coto, Coleen Wilder

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Presentations

Debate continues between the contribution of education level and clinical expertise in the nursing practice environment. Research suggests a link between Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) nurses and positive patient outcomes such as lower mortality, decreased falls, and fewer medication errors. Purpose: To examine if there a negative correlation between patient falls and the level of nurse education at an urban hospital located in Midwest Illinois during the years 2010-2014? Methods: A retrospective crosssectional cohort analysis was conducted using data from the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) from the years 2010-2014. Sample: Inpatients aged ≥ 18 years …

Distribution Of Farmers' Markets Accepting Snap In Maine, Elizabeth G. Sull Jan 2016

Distribution Of Farmers' Markets Accepting Snap In Maine, Elizabeth G. Sull

Atlas of Maine

Maine’s SNAP farmers’ market program allows low-income families to use their EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards to pay for fresh produce at select farmers’ markets, often at a discounted rate. However, currently only about 30% of farmers’ markets in Maine accommodate SNAP. It is unclear whether these SNAP farmers’ markets are distributed in the areas that need them most.

In this study I examine the distribution of farmers’ markets that currently accept SNAP/EBT cards and compare them to a). the number of individuals in the town which received food supplements in 2015. b). the town’s population as of 2010 and …

The Traditional Food Of Migrants: Meat, Water, And Other Challenges For Dietary Advice. An Ethnography In Guanajuato, Mexico, Carolyn Smith-Morris Jan 2016

The Traditional Food Of Migrants: Meat, Water, And Other Challenges For Dietary Advice. An Ethnography In Guanajuato, Mexico, Carolyn Smith-Morris

Anthropology Research

The term “traditional diet” is used variously in public health and nutrition literature to refer to a substantial variety of foodways. Yet it is difficult to draw generalities about dietary tradition for specific ethnic groups. Given the strong association between migration and dietary change, it is particularly important that dietary advice for migrants be both accurate and specific. In this article, I examine the cultural construct of “traditional foods” through mixed method research on diet and foodways among rural farmers in Guanajuato, MX and migrants from this community to other Mexican and U.S. destinations. Findings reveal first, that quantitatively …

Older Adults With Elevated Bmi Are At Greater Risk Of Accelerated Knee Osteoarthritis: Data From The Osteoarthritis Initiative, Kyle D. Wallace

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Background: Around 35% of adults with osteoarthritis (OA) have knee osteoarthritis (KOA), which generally progresses over several years; however, some individuals experience accelerated KOA (AKOA), a rapid progression to end-stage disease within 48-months. Purpose: To assess baseline differences among those who develop the different types of KOA, and to determine if baseline characteristics and measures can be used to predict an individual’s KOA status (Common KOA or AKOA) 48 months later.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) was completed. At baseline, 4,769 participants were enrolled. Data from individuals (n = 1,561) free of radiographic KOA (Kellgren-Lawrence …

The Effects Of Benefit Timing And Income Fungibility On Food Purchasing Decisions Among Snap Households, Joshua P. Berning, Gregory Colson, Jeffery H. Dorfman, Travis A. Smith, Xiaosi Yang Jan 2016

The Effects Of Benefit Timing And Income Fungibility On Food Purchasing Decisions Among Snap Households, Joshua P. Berning, Gregory Colson, Jeffery H. Dorfman, Travis A. Smith, Xiaosi Yang

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest nutritional safety net in the United States. Prior research has found that participants have higher consumption shortly after receiving their benefits, followed by lower consumption towards the end of the benefit month. This “SNAP benefit cycle” has been found to have negative effects on beneficiaries. We examine two behavioral responses of SNAP participants that may work in tandem to drive much of the cycle: short-run impatience – a higher preference to consume today; and fungibility of income – the degree of substitutability between a SNAP dollar and a cash dollar. Using …

Variation In Food Prices And Snap Adequacy For Purchasing The Thrifty Food Plan, Erin Bronchetti, Garret Christensen, Benjamin Hansen Jan 2016

Variation In Food Prices And Snap Adequacy For Purchasing The Thrifty Food Plan, Erin Bronchetti, Garret Christensen, Benjamin Hansen

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Whether Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are adequate to provide food security for eligible households is an important and timely policy question. While the nominal value of SNAP benefits is fixed across states (except for Hawaii and Alaska), variation in food prices across geographic areas is dramatic, and the real value of SNAP benefits varies widely across the U.S. Our research provides new evidence on geographic variation in the adequacy of SNAP benefits to purchase the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP).

Using multiple methods to estimate the cost of the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) faced by households across the nation, …

Conservation Agriculture: Gendered Impacts On Households' Livelihoods, Olipa Zulu-Mbata, Antony Chapoto Jan 2016

Conservation Agriculture: Gendered Impacts On Households' Livelihoods, Olipa Zulu-Mbata, Antony Chapoto

Zambia Social Science Journal

In response to climate change, new technologies resilient to climatic variability have been promoted among smallholder farmers. Conservation Agriculture (CA) has been promoted since the 1990s in sub-Saharan Africa. However, as with any new technology, various factors affect adoption and ultimately the impact of the technology. Gender is one such factor. Both female and male smallholder farmers are faced with numerous constraints to accessing productive resources. Female farmers face more problems in adopting new technology than do male farmers, resulting in few of them adopting them. This in turn reduces the impact that these technologies have on their livelihood. Using …

Temporal Variability In Large Grazer Space Use In An Experimental Landscape, Edward J. Raynor, Anthony Joren, Adam Skibbe, Mark Sowers, John M. Briggs, Angela N. Laws, Douglas Goodin

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Land use, climate change, and their interaction each have great potential to affect grazing systems. With anticipated more frequent and extensive future drought, a more complete understanding of the mechanisms that determine large grazer landscape-level distribution under varying climatic conditions is integral to ecosystem management. Using an experimental setting with contrasting fire treatments, we describe the inter-annual variability of the effect of landscape topography and disturbance from prescribed spring fire on large grazer space use in years of variable resource availability. Using GPS telemetry, we investigated space use of plains bison (Bison bison bison) as they moved among watersheds managed …

Sustainable Grassland Management: An Exploratory Study Of Progressive Ranchers In Nebraska, Stephanie M. Kennedy, Mark E. Burbach, Maggi S. Sliwinski Jan 2016

Sustainable Grassland Management: An Exploratory Study Of Progressive Ranchers In Nebraska, Stephanie M. Kennedy, Mark E. Burbach, Maggi S. Sliwinski

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Well-managed grasslands provide numerous ecosystem services. Ranchers who employ sustainable grazing practices limit grassland conversion and conserve critical habitats. This phenomenological study explored the grassland management decisions of progressive ranchers in Nebraska. Each individual interviewed for this study is proactive about the state of their grasslands, whether they are motivated by financial or conservation factors. Throughout the evolution of their businesses, these ranchers have taken steps to improve their management techniques and continue to employ new strategies while planning for the long-term productivity of their grasslands. For policy makers and educators seeking to improve grassland management decisions, demonstrating new methods …

Foraging Decisions Underlying Restricted Space Use: Effects Of Fire And Forage Maturation On Large Herbivore Nutrient Uptake, Edward J. Raynor, Anthony Joern, Jesse B. Nippert, John M. Briggs Jan 2016

Foraging Decisions Underlying Restricted Space Use: Effects Of Fire And Forage Maturation On Large Herbivore Nutrient Uptake, Edward J. Raynor, Anthony Joern, Jesse B. Nippert, John M. Briggs

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Recent models suggest that herbivores optimize nutrient intake by selecting patches of low to intermediate vegetation biomass. We assessed the application of this hypothesis to plains bison (Bison bison) in an experimental grassland managed with fire by estimating daily rates of nutrient intake in relation to grass biomass and by measuring patch selection in experimental watersheds in which grass biomass was manipulated by prescribed burning. Digestible crude protein content of grass declined linearly with increasing biomass, and the mean digestible protein content relative to grass biomass was greater in burned watersheds than watersheds not burned that spring (intercept; F1,251 …

Socioeconomic Gradients In Early Childhood Health: Evidence From Bangladesh And Nepal, Satis Devkota, Bibhudutta Panda Jan 2016

Socioeconomic Gradients In Early Childhood Health: Evidence From Bangladesh And Nepal, Satis Devkota, Bibhudutta Panda

Economics & Management Publications

Background: A large literature has developed researching the origins of socioeconomic gradients in child health in developed countries. Particularly, this research examines the age at which these gradient effects emerge and how they change across different stages of childhood. However, similar research on developing countries is limited.

Methods: This paper examines the socioeconomic gradients in early childhood health in two developing countries, Bangladesh and Nepal using the 2011 Demographic and Health Surveys. The paper separately studies two measures of household socioeconomic status: household wealth and maternal educational attainment. Two anthropometric measures of early childhood health, height-for-age and weight-for-age Z scores …
