Unexpected Reaction Pathway For Butyrylcholinesterase-Catalyzed Inactivation Of "Hunger Hormone" Ghrelin, Jianzhuang Yao, Yaxia Yuan, Fang Zheng, Chang-Guo Zhan Feb 2016

Unexpected Reaction Pathway For Butyrylcholinesterase-Catalyzed Inactivation Of "Hunger Hormone" Ghrelin, Jianzhuang Yao, Yaxia Yuan, Fang Zheng, Chang-Guo Zhan

Molecular Modeling and Biopharmaceutical Center Faculty Publications

Extensive computational modeling and simulations have been carried out, in the present study, to uncover the fundamental reaction pathway for butyrylcholinesterase (BChE)-catalyzed hydrolysis of ghrelin, demonstrating that the acylation process of BChE-catalyzed hydrolysis of ghrelin follows an unprecedented single-step reaction pathway and the single-step acylation process is rate-determining. The free energy barrier (18.8 kcal/mol) calculated for the rate-determining step is reasonably close to the experimentally-derived free energy barrier (~19.4 kcal/mol), suggesting that the obtained mechanistic insights are reasonable. The single-step reaction pathway for the acylation is remarkably different from the well-known two-step acylation reaction pathway for numerous ester hydrolysis reactions …

Jointness In Farmers' Decision To Apply Pesticides In Multiple Crops And Its Determinants At The Farm Level In Bangladesh, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Decision about pesticide application for pest control is an issue of major concern, but research on factors affecting decision-making is limited. This study investigates jointness in farmers' decision to apply pesticides in multiple crops and socio-economic determinants of pesticide use across crops using a survey of 2083 farms from 17 districts in Bangladesh applying a multivariate Tobit model. Overall, 75.4% and 12.7% of the farmers applied pesticides in one and two crops, respectively. The decision to apply pesticides in multiple crops was found to be negatively correlated, providing evidence of jointness. Also, individual socio-economic factors exerted variable influences on pesticide …

The New Blue Economy: The Future Of Sustainability, Mark J. Spalding Feb 2016

The New Blue Economy: The Future Of Sustainability, Mark J. Spalding

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

The world’s ocean is the world’s life support. Many human activities have defined a negative relationship with the ocean. Simply put: we dump too much bad stuff in, and we take too much good stuff out. The traditional ocean economy—those ocean-based and ocean-related activities from which humans derive economic benefit— did not acknowledge or honor the ocean’s natural services, nor its finite capacity to take human abuse without undermining those services on which we depend. The “new blue economy” is the term of art for identifying those activities that improve the human relationship with the ocean and for aligning our …

Food and Machinery

Effect of Se-enriched germination was studied, on functional properties of soybean protein isolate (SPI). After inversed 6 h in 10 mg/L Na2SeO3 solution, soybean was germinated 96 h at optimal conditions. SPI from germinated soybean was prepared by alkaline extraction and acid precipitation method. The results showed that the change trend on solubility, water binding capacity, foaming property, and emulsifying property of SPI were similar, these properties value increased firstly and then decreased. SPI separated from sprouting 24~60 h soybean showed better solubility, emulsifying and foaming properties. The best functional property of SPI was determined when soybean …
