Development Of The K-State (Competence) And Mutagenesis In Stressed Bacillus Subtillis Cells, Amanda Kidman
Development Of The K-State (Competence) And Mutagenesis In Stressed Bacillus Subtillis Cells, Amanda Kidman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Mutagenesis is central to the evolutionary process. We currently view evolution as a gradual process affecting all cells within a population. However, my project studied an underestimated part of the evolutionary process: mutations generated during stationary phase (caused by nutritional stress or growth arrest) within a subpopulation of cells. I used Bacillus subtilis, a bacterial model for cell growth and differentiation. Stationary-phase cultures of B. subtilis differentiate subpopulations that exhibit different survival strategies including competence, secondary metabolite production, biofilm formation, cannibalism, and endospore formation. The development of competence permits cells to uptake exogenous DNA and incorporate it into their genome. …

Food Processing And Cooking Technology Of The Mimbres Mogollon (Early Pithouse Period Through The Mimbres Classic A.D. 200-1130), Ashley Morgan Lauzon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis examines food processing and cooking technology of the Mimbres Mogollon culture from A.D. 200-1130. Food processing and cooking technology includes any tool (chipped stone, ground stone, ceramics, basketry/perishables, etc.) or feature (fire-features, etc.) used to prepare, process, and cook food. Data on this technology as a whole is lacking in the region. The goal of this research is to document and explore the changes and developments in food-related technology over time and to investigate possible factors that influenced its development.
To document this technology over the course of approximately 1000 years, four case study sites were used: The …
An Investigation Of The Testing Effect On Motor Learning, Aaron Leonard Pauls
An Investigation Of The Testing Effect On Motor Learning, Aaron Leonard Pauls
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Optimization of learning processes is the goal many educators strive to achieve with their students. One of the potential methods used towards optimizing this process is what’s known as the testing effect. The testing effect is the improved performance on a retention test as a result of prior testing during some period of practice. Previously, the testing effect was investigated using mostly cognitive tasks such as the learning of a number of words. In this paper, we examine the impact the testing effect has on learning the motor skill of putting. The study used a 2 x 2 mixed design, …
The Effects Of An Inclined And Declined Slope On Backward Locomotion: A Kinematic And Electromyographic Analysis Of Retrowalking, Song Dan Vo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an inclined and declined slopeon kinematic properties and muscle activation magnitudes. This purpose was achieved by using a +10% grade for inclined backward walking (IBW) and -10% grade for declined backwardwalking (DBW) on a treadmill. Eleven participants (24.6 ± 4.1 yrs, 68.5 ± 14.6 kg, 1.7 ± 0.1 m) were recruited from the UNLV student body and were subject to a three day adaptation protocol to allow them to choose a preferred walking speed and to familiarize themselves with such a novel task. Two consecutive practice days included a …

Visual Impairment And Factors Associated With Difficulties With Daily Tasks, Anne T. Riddering
Dissertations
In the past 10 years, the number of American adults with visual impairments has increased from 1 million to 4 million and is expected to double to 8 million people by the year 2050 (The Eye Diseases Prevalence Research Group, 2004; National Eye Institute, 2013). Therapies to treat retinal diseases causing visual impairment, such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (Massof, 2002; Mogk, 2011), have evolved in the past two decades (Gupta et al., 2013; Hooper & Guymer, 2003), but little research has examined recent population and difficulties with performing daily activities. Different types of professionals, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, …

Climate, energy, and food security are three of the greatest challenges society faces this century. Solutions for mitigating the effects of climate change often conflict with solutions for ensuring society’s future energy and food requirements. For example, BioEnergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) has been proposed as an important method for achieving negative CO2 emissions later this century while simultaneously producing renewable energy on a global scale. However, BECCS has many negative environmental consequences for land, nutrient, and water use as well as biodiversity and food production. In contrast, large-scale industrial cultivation of marine microalgae can provide society with …

A total of 234 caregivers were randomly selected for this study using multi-stage stratified random sampling. Results showed that no significant difference were …
Local And State Governments Are Taking The Stage When It Is Fda's Curtain Call - Are Local And State Governments' Safety Warnings Preempted By Federal Law?, Melissa M. Card
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Eliminated from fad diets, sworn off by celebrities, and frantically reformulated out of processed foods, added sugars have been deemed the new nutritional scoundrel. Recent studies from the American Heart Association, the World Health Organization, and the American Cancer Association demonstrate that the consumption of added sugar leads to increased risks of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and gout. While all foods containing added sugar are deemed unhealthy, Sugary-Sweetened Beverages ("SSBs") are said to be especially toxic by the American health community, by virtue of these beverages' being excessively high in added sugar content, low in satiety, and incomplete in compensation …
To Boldly Go: Boldness Predicts Behavior And Survivorship Of A Critical Prey Species, Zoe Katherine Tinkle
To Boldly Go: Boldness Predicts Behavior And Survivorship Of A Critical Prey Species, Zoe Katherine Tinkle
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Understanding population dynamics is at the core of conservation biology. However, our understanding of the mechanisms driving population dynamics remains unclear in many cases. Animal behavior in response to biotic and abiotic stressors is an important driver of these population dynamics and varies both within- and among-individuals in a population. Consistent differences in behavior among individuals within a population are referred to as personality traits. Boldness, a personality trait representing the willingness of an individual to engage in risky behavior, may help predict individual and community-level consequences, such as survivorship. Here, we investigated the inter- and intra-individual variation in risk-taking …
Will Consumers Be In The "Dark" About Labels On Genetically Engineered And Modified Foods?, Hilary Nat
Will Consumers Be In The "Dark" About Labels On Genetically Engineered And Modified Foods?, Hilary Nat
Journal of Food Law & Policy
In the 1900s, the United States began to sell genetically engineered foods. One of the first genetically engineered foods sold in the United States and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was the Flavr Savr tomato. The tomato's genetic structure was modified to prevent softening which allowed it to ripen after being picked. In the United States, statistics demonstrate that 92% of com, 94% of soybeans, and 94% of cotton sold is genetically engineered. In addition, it is estimated that 75% of the processed foods sold in supermarkets around the United States contain ingredients that are products of …

My experiences in San Cristóbal de las Casas have been the primary motivation for my interest in female Zapatistas. Ever since I concluded my research project, I have had a question that has been largely unanswered by scholars. What are the separate economic and social factors that motivated indigenous Tetzel and Tzotzil men and women to volunteer in the Zapatista Rebellion, and how has feminism influenced indigenous women’s participation in the rebellion? Up to this point, few historians have studied the gendered nature of the causes for indigenous participation in the EZLN. Those who have were concerned with the impact …

Avoiding Linguistic Neglect Of Deaf Children, T. Humphries, P. Kushalnagar, G. Mathur, Donna Jo Napoli, C. Padden, C. Rathmann, S. Smith
Linguistics Faculty Works
Deaf children who are not provided with a sign language early in their development are at risk of linguistic deprivation; they may never be fluent in any language, and they may have deficits in cognitive activities that rely on a firm foundation in a first language. These children are socially and emotionally isolated. Deafness makes a child vulnerable to abuse, and linguistic deprivation compounds the abuse because the child is less able to report it. Parents rely on professionals as guides in making responsible choices in raising and educating their deaf children. But lack of expertise on language acquisition and …

Evaluating The Likelihood Of Use Of Bispectral Index Guided Anesthesia As A Strategy To Reduce Postoperative Delirium In Surgical Patients 65 Years Of Age Or Older, Simon Jack Gibson
Doctoral Projects
Postoperative delirium (POD) is the most common postoperative complication in the elderly, accounting for approximately $164 billion in costs per year in the United States (Inouye, Westendorp, & Saczynski, 2014, p. 911). This complication occurs in as many as 50% of elderly patients, but can be prevented as much as 40% of the time (Inouye et al., 2014). The use of processed encephalographic monitoring, such as Bispectral Index (BIS) monitoring, to guide anesthetic dosage is the single intraoperative intervention with enough evidence to support it as a recommendation for use to reduce POD (American Geriatrics Society, 2015). There were two …

Human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) has become a manageable disease due to antiretroviral therapy. Although many treatment schedules are effective in controlling the viral load, maintaining it for a long period is difficult due to many factors such as adverse effects, long-term toxicity, and dosing schedules, all of them may result in poor patient compliance, treatment failure and drug resistance. The evaluation of these treatment schedules in terms of their efficacy, duration, and acceptance is an important aspect for treating doctors, patients, and policy makers. Therefore, our objective is to evaluate stavudine, lamivudine, and nevirapine regimen in the management of …

Reproductive Ecology Of Greater Sage-Grouse In Strawberry Valley, Utah, Jared Jeffrey Baxter
Theses and Dissertations
Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter, sage-grouse) are a species of conservation concern in the rangelands of western North America due to their dramatic decline over the last half century. Effective conservation and management of sensitive species requires an understanding of how species respond to management actions. We examined two aspects of the reproductive phases of sage-grouse: nest predation, and habitat selection by female sage-grouse with chicks. In Chapter 1, we developed resource selection functions to assess the influence of mechanical treatments of mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata vaseyana) on habitat selection by greater sage-grouse with chicks. …
