Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The soil transmitted helminths are a group of parasitic worms responsible for extensive mor- bidity in many of the world’s most economically depressed locations. With growing empha- sis on disease mapping and eradication, the availability of accurate and cost-effective diagnostic measures is of paramount importance to global control and elimination efforts. While real-time PCR-based molecular detection assays have shown great promise, to date, these assays have utilized sub-optimal targets. By performing next-generation sequencing- based repeat analyses, we have identified high copy-number, non-coding DNA sequences from a series of soil transmitted pathogens. We have used these repetitive DNA elements as targets …
Seek Knowledge & Affirm Faith: Conflicting World Views?, Jay Brand
Seek Knowledge & Affirm Faith: Conflicting World Views?, Jay Brand
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
I believe that the relationship between reason and faith necessarily involves one being subordinate to the other. However, the first two components of Andrews University's motto, "Seek Knowledge, Affirm Faith, Change the World" juxtapose these epistemologies as equals. In valuing peer-reviewed sources above others, graduate education tends to promote reason over faith as an approach to evidence, and in so-doing, undermines faith in Biblical authority. Peer-reviewed analyses of Scripture become more valuable than the Words of Scripture. Over time, this scholarly hermeneutic erodes the final authority of Scripture and compromises the foundation for faith.

The Quantified Self Movement: Legal Challenges And Benefits Of Personal Biometric Data Tracking, Timothy S. Hall
Akron Intellectual Property Journal
This article explores some of the potential pitfalls associated with collection of detailed individual biometric or health-related information, and demonstrates that current laws and regulations are not well designed to protect users of these devices and apps from unauthorized use or misuse of their data. Health information is among the most sensitive, intimate, and potentially damaging personal information one may possess, and health policymakers have made health information privacy a priority for decades for good reason. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was one of the major health policy legislative achievements of the 1990s. However, HIPAA …

Intrauterine growthrestricted sheep fetuses exhibit smaller hindlimb muscle fibers and lower proportions of insulin-sensitive Type I fibers near term. Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 310: R1020–R1029, 2016. First published April 6, 2016; doi:10.1152/ajpregu.00528.2015.—Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) reduces muscle mass and insulin sensitivity in offspring. Insulin sensitivity varies among muscle fiber types, with Type I fibers being most sensitive. Differences in fibertype ratios are associated with insulin resistance in adults, and thus we hypothesized that near-term IUGR sheep fetuses exhibit reduced size and proportions of Type I fibers. Placental insufficiency-induced IUGR fetuses were 54% smaller (P < 0.05) than controls and exhibited hypoxemia and hypoglycemia, which contributed to 6.9- fold greater (P < 0.05) plasma norepinephrine and 53% lower (P < 0.05) plasma insulin concentrations. IUGR semitendinosus muscles contained less (P < 0.05) myosin heavy chain-I protein (MyHC-I) and proportionally fewer (P < 0.05) Type I and Type I/IIa fibers than controls, but MyHC-II protein concentrations, Type II fibers, and Type IIx fibers were not different. IUGR biceps femoris muscles exhibited similar albeit less dramatic differences in fiber type proportions. Type I and IIa fibers are more responsive to adrenergic and insulin regulation than Type IIx and may be more profoundly impaired by the high catecholamines and low insulin in our IUGR fetuses, leading to their proportional reduction. In both muscles, fibers of each type were uniformly smaller (P < 0.05) in IUGR fetuses than controls, which indicates that fiber hypertrophy is not dependent on type but rather on other factors such as myoblast differentiation or protein synthesis. Together, our findings show that IUGR fetal muscles develop smaller fibers and have proportionally fewer Type I fibers, which is indicative of developmental adaptations that may help explain the link between IUGR and adulthood insulin resistance

Outdoor School is a cherished educational tradition in the Portland, OR region. This program's success is attributed to its presumed ability to positively impact affective and cognitive student outcomes. Residential programs such as Outdoor School are considered to be an important supplement to the classroom model of learning because they offer an authentic, contextually rich learning environment. References to relevant literature support the idea that student gains in affective and cognitive domains occur as a result of the multi-sensory, enjoyable, hands-on nature of outdoor learning. The sample population for this study was 115 sixth graders from a demographically diverse Portland, …

Targeting Iκb Kinase Β In Adipocyte Lineage Cells For Treatment Of Obesity And Metabolic Dysfunctions, Robert N. Helsley, Yipeng Sui, Se-Hyung Park, Zun Liu, Richard G. Lee, Beibei Zhu, Philip A. Kern, Changcheng Zhou
Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications
IκB kinase β (IKKβ), a central coordinator of inflammation through activation of nuclear factor-κB, has been identified as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of obesity-associated metabolic dysfunctions. In this study, we evaluated an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) inhibitor of IKKβ and found that IKKβ ASO ameliorated diet-induced metabolic dysfunctions in mice. Interestingly, IKKβ ASO also inhibited adipocyte differentiation and reduced adiposity in high-fat (HF)-fed mice, indicating an important role of IKKβ signaling in the regulation of adipocyte differentiation. Indeed, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genomic deletion of IKKβ in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes blocked these cells differentiating into adipocytes. To further elucidate the role of …
