Relationships Between Parental Energy Balance-Related Behaviors And Their Child’S Weight Status And Performance On Fitnessgram® In-School Assessment, Kathryn M. Painter Apr 2016

Relationships Between Parental Energy Balance-Related Behaviors And Their Child’S Weight Status And Performance On Fitnessgram® In-School Assessment, Kathryn M. Painter

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

BACKGROUND

In general, children learn habits by observing the behavior of family members, especially their parents. This study investigates the impact parental modeling of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) has on their child’s risk of obesity and physical fitness (PF). It was hypothesized that children whose parents were more physically active and less sedentary would perform to a higher standard on their in-school PF assessment and would also have a lower risk of obesity.

OBJECTIVES

To develop successful childhood obesity interventions, more research is needed to clearly understand the impact of parents’ MVPA and SB on the …

Micronutrient Foliar Analysis And Supplementation In Nutrient Management For High Yield Maize (Zea Mays L.), Zachary P. Stewart Apr 2016

Micronutrient Foliar Analysis And Supplementation In Nutrient Management For High Yield Maize (Zea Mays L.), Zachary P. Stewart

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Micronutrient supplementation in maize production is of growing interest to producers and agronomists as means to further increase yield as other crop needs are increasingly met. Plant tissue and soil sampling for micronutrient concentrations have been used to determine likely responses to micronutrient supplementation. Nebraska soils are generally micronutrient sufficient and usually do not have soil or plant tissue micronutrient concentrations below critical levels, however, during precise periods where specific micronutrients are in greatest need due to physiological demands, there may be opportunity for micronutrient supplementation to increase grain yield. The compiled chapters indicate that in most scenarios in Nebraska, …

Building Relationships And Facilitating Immigrant Community Integration: An Evaluation Of A Cultural Navigator Program, Rebecca L. Thomas, Christine M. Chiarelli-Helminiak, Brunilda Ferraj, Kyle Barrette Apr 2016

Building Relationships And Facilitating Immigrant Community Integration: An Evaluation Of A Cultural Navigator Program, Rebecca L. Thomas, Christine M. Chiarelli-Helminiak, Brunilda Ferraj, Kyle Barrette

Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications

Despite the United States’ long history of immigration, large and small communities around the country struggle to integrate newcomers into the social, economic, cultural, and political spheres of society. Utilizing results from the program evaluation of one public library’s Cultural Navigator Program (CNP), the authors illustrate how communities and public institutions can promote integration and relationship building between newly arrived immigrants and long-time residents. Existing social networks, conceptualized in this article as social capital, within receiving communities were leveraged to build capacity among newly arrived immigrants and foster inclusivity and integration at the community level. As a place of intervention, …

Large-Scale Land Acquisitions And Applying A Gender Lens To Supply Chain Reform, Mina Manuchehri Apr 2016

Large-Scale Land Acquisitions And Applying A Gender Lens To Supply Chain Reform, Mina Manuchehri

Washington International Law Journal

In recent years, multinational corporations, in particular food and beverage companies, have committed to “zero tolerance for land grabs” throughout their supply chains. To achieve this end, companies have also committed to international legal norms, including Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Although these commitments were unprecedented, no company explicitly requires the consideration of women’s use of and rights to land when remedying land grabs or acquiring land. To guarantee that women are included and consulted throughout land acquisition processes, companies should explicitly require the application of a …

Does Faith Ameliorate The Relationship Between Sleep And Depression?, Jesse E. Burrell Apr 2016

Does Faith Ameliorate The Relationship Between Sleep And Depression?, Jesse E. Burrell

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Depression is one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in the world. College students are more likely to experience depression than adults. Research has established a correlational relationship between sleep and depression (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Davidson, 2013; Franzen & Buysse, 2008, Lund, Reider, Whiting, & Prichard, 2010; Tsuno, Besset, & Ritchie, 2005; Van Bemmel, 1997) and suggests there is also a causational relationship between faith and lower rates of depressive symptoms (Baker & Cruickshank, 2009; Koenig, 2008a Koenig, 2001; Newport, Agrawal, & Witters, 2010; Reutter & Bigattie, 2014; Rosmarin et al., 2013). However, little research exists exploring how faith …

The Relationship Between Sexual Objectification, Body Image, Activity Monitoring, And Compulsive Exercise, Christina Tuning Apr 2016

The Relationship Between Sexual Objectification, Body Image, Activity Monitoring, And Compulsive Exercise, Christina Tuning

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of this study was to look at the relationship between sexual objectification, body image, eating disorder symptomatology, activity monitoring, and compulsive exercise. Objectification Theory provides a framework for understanding a woman’s experience of the culturally established ideal body, which in Western cultures has become increasingly thin. As women internalize the thin ideal, their experience of self-worth and body image can be impacted and can lead to efforts to control their appearance including diet and exercise. While exercise has been consistently shown to have health benefits, little has been said about unhealthy levels of exercise. Compulsive exercise in particular …

A Critical Analysis Of Multiculturalism, Cultural Competence, And Cultural Humility: An Examination Of Potential Training Opportunities For Pre-Service Teachers, Elizabeth A. Nolan Apr 2016

A Critical Analysis Of Multiculturalism, Cultural Competence, And Cultural Humility: An Examination Of Potential Training Opportunities For Pre-Service Teachers, Elizabeth A. Nolan

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This dissertation is a critical analysis of the concepts of multiculturalism, cultural competence, and cultural humility. The intent is to examine the historical background of these concepts, the changing demographics of the United States that are forcing an assessment of the meaning of these terms (especially the frequently used notion of multiculturalism), and comparison of cultural competence and cultural humility. The dissertation also engages in a reflection on new possibilities and opportunities offered by a focus on cultural humility for pre-service teacher training.

Perceptions Of Youth On Health, Nutrition, And Well-Being In Their Local Community: The Somersworth Photovoice Project, Sarah Garstka Apr 2016

Perceptions Of Youth On Health, Nutrition, And Well-Being In Their Local Community: The Somersworth Photovoice Project, Sarah Garstka

Inquiry Journal 2016

What I learned from years of working with low-income, at-risk youth, is that each has a big voice and a lot of ideas that they are eager to share. Because virtually everyone can learn to use a camera, photography is an accessible way for young people to express themselves. This is what made Photovoice such an ideal method to collect data at the Somersworth Youth Safe Haven, an after school program for at-risk youth living in low-income housing. Four middle and high school students from the Safe Haven agreed to share their perspectives on how the community environment impacts their …

Biodiversity, Ecosystem Function And The Pollination Ecology Of Urban Gardens In Dayton, Ohio, Angela Nicole Giaquinto Apr 2016

Biodiversity, Ecosystem Function And The Pollination Ecology Of Urban Gardens In Dayton, Ohio, Angela Nicole Giaquinto

Honors Theses

Urban agriculture is an ancient concept that is gaining momentum in the United States in connection with urban renewal projects and efforts to mediate urban food deserts. These agriculture efforts represent a potential habitat for pollinator communities within the urban hardscape. Pollinator communities are threatened by urban landscape transformation, and bee species, in particular, are in a state of global decline due to various stressors. Urban agriculture has the potential to sustain both human and ecological communities, and the pollinators that visit gardens may provide pollination to plant species in the surrounding area. We investigated the influence of urban land …

Factors Lnfluencing Weight Gain And Perceived Barriers Of Exercise In First Semester College Students, Noah C. Neuenfeldt

Masters Theses

College students believe that university weight management interventions impact their health habits. This suggests that universities can play a large role in encouraging students to be active. The purpose of this study was to investigate this claim and to acquire a better understanding of weight change in first year college students in the first semester. We specifically sought to identify the variables that influence weight gain, as well as determine the awareness and usage of resources available to the students. A survey was given to first year students addressing the variables of interest including change in weight and Body Mass …

Role Of Acetyl-Coa Synthetase 2 And Acetyl-Coa Precursors, Acetate And Ethanol, On Hepatocyte Gene Expression, Noel Bruner, Anjeza Erickson, Mengna Xia, Bo He, Regis Moreau

UCARE: Research Products

Abnormally high blood and tissue lipid levels observed in metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases are associated with extensive gene expression changes. Gene expression is modulated by epigenetic mechanisms, which include modifications of DNA-bound protein histones without alteration of DNA sequence. Histone hyperacetylation is observed in the setting of metabolic disorders but the causes have not been described in any detail. We know that histone acetylation is positively correlated with the abundance of acetyl-coenzyme A. This study tests the hypothesis that acetyl-coenzyme A metabolizing enzyme acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase 2 (ACSS2, cytoplasmic, aka AceCS1) impacts liver function through histone acetylation, and that …

Effects Of Nutrition On Female Leopard Geckos, Lisa Keys, Dennis M. Ferraro Apr 2016

Effects Of Nutrition On Female Leopard Geckos, Lisa Keys, Dennis M. Ferraro

UCARE: Research Products

Nutrition has a dramatic effect on animal’s bodies and behaviors as they go through their lives. Looking at the effects of nutrition on captive animals is crucial to providing future animals with better lives. Since captive animals don’t get the variety of food items that they would get in the wild, supplementation is often used to meet the minimum dietary requirements. Looking at how supplementation affects female leopard geckos at breeding size, there were both positive and negative correlations with different supplementations used. After taking body measurements on females over several months on one kind of additional supplement, the control …

The Impact Of Depleting Dietary Microrna In A High-Fat Diet, Briley Moates, Sonia Manca, Janos Zempleni Apr 2016

The Impact Of Depleting Dietary Microrna In A High-Fat Diet, Briley Moates, Sonia Manca, Janos Zempleni

UCARE: Research Products

We tested the hypothesis that a highfat diet would increase the difference in body weight between C57BL/6J mice provided dietary microRNA (Exo +) and mice which were fed the same diet depleted of microRNA (Exo-).

• The data demonstrate that depleting miRNAs from a high-fat diet does not impact the difference in body weight between Exo+ and Exo- subjects. • Depleting dietary miRNAs from normal low-fat diets do result in differences in body weight, fat, fecundity, purine metabolism, and gut microbiome.
