Hydration Status, Habits, And Knowledge Of Collegiate Cross Country Runners, Laura J. Comee Apr 2016

Hydration Status, Habits, And Knowledge Of Collegiate Cross Country Runners, Laura J. Comee

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Abstract: Dehydration exceeding 2% loss of body mass can cause decreased cognitive and physical performance in endurance athletes. While many runners carry water bottles with them, most do not know their sweat rate or fluid recommendations, increasing the risk for heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke. Purpose: To assess hydration status, habits, and knowledge of collegiate cross country runners. Methods: Institutional Review Board approval was obtained and subjects completed informed consents. Thirty-three female and twenty-five male Division III collegiate runners participated in the study. Hydration status was assessed measuring the specific gravity of three urine samples one each …

What Is The Relationship Between Dietary Calcium Intake And Cvd Risk Factors In A College-Age Population?, Mary Cherne

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Abstract: Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) including dyslipidemia and hypertension can develop in adolescence and increase risk of CVD in adulthood. Improved blood pressure and lipid profiles are associated with higher dietary calcium intake in older adults, but limited data exists in young adults. Purpose: Determine the relationship between dietary calcium intake and CVD risk factors in a college-age population. Methods: IRB approval was obtained. Fasting blood samples were collected from 149 college students ages 18-24. Serum total cholesterol (TC), LDL, HDL, and triacylglycerol (TG) concentrations were measured using a LDX Cholestech machine, blood glucose using a Precision Xtra …

Ecological Effects Of Development On American Black Bear, Michael J. Evans Apr 2016

Ecological Effects Of Development On American Black Bear, Michael J. Evans

Doctoral Dissertations

Global patterns of human land use have shifted towards increasingly sprawled development intermixed with natural land cover, creating coupled human and natural systems. To understand how these patterns may affect the persistence of wildlife populations, I studied changes in American black bear (Ursus americanus) population density, dispersal, movement behavior, and conflicts with humans across a gradient of development in Connecticut. Forest fragmentation, and intermixture with housing promoted conflicts between bears and people. Median census tract household income was associated with spatial autocorrelation in reported conflict locations, illustrating the importance of accounting for social carrying capacity in managing human-wildlife …

The Relationship Between Personal Wellness (Mind, Body, Spirit) And Job Satisfaction Among Independent School Educators In One Mid-South Region, Lou Flowers Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study researched the relationship between personal wellness (mind, body, and spirit) and job satisfaction among a sample of 71 elementary, middle, and high school teachers. The investigation took place among various four faith-based associated schools and four secular independent schools in a Mid-south region. A two-part research based questionnaire was administered to randomly selected teachers in the eight schools. Correlations of wellness dimensions of body, mind, and spirit were examined and analyzed used a mixed ANOVA. Results indicated that all teachers, despite the difference in school type, felt highly satisfied with their jobs. Teachers reported very high levels of …

The Effect Of Predatory Encounters On The Hpa Axis Responsiveness And Memory Of Avian Prey, Blake Carlton Jones Apr 2016

The Effect Of Predatory Encounters On The Hpa Axis Responsiveness And Memory Of Avian Prey, Blake Carlton Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Presumably, a threatening encounter with a predator activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in free-living animals in what is commonly called a stress response, which may help mediate the lasting memory of the attack. However, these assumptions are based on experiments that do not resemble what free-living animals experience in nature, and typically involve laboratory models that can have considerably different physiological responses than their free-living counterparts. To address this gap in our understanding, I developed novel methods to examine the physiological stress response and its effects on learning and memory in ecologically relevant contexts. Specifically, I assessed the effect of …

Na/K-Atpase Amplification Of Oxidant Stress; A Universal But Unrecognized Clinical Target?, Zijian Xie, Phd, Joseph I. Shapiro, Md Apr 2016

Na/K-Atpase Amplification Of Oxidant Stress; A Universal But Unrecognized Clinical Target?, Zijian Xie, Phd, Joseph I. Shapiro, Md

Marshall Journal of Medicine

The Na/K-ATPase has a signaling function which appears to be separate from its ion pumping function. This signaling function refers to the transduction of conformational changes in the Na/K-ATPase alpha1 subunit into activating Src’s tyrosine kinase activity, triggering a cascade which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), modulates other signaling pathways, and causes many physiological and pathophysiological effects. We have recently observed that ROS themselves as well as cardiotonic steroids can actually initiate the signal by directly inducing conformational changes in alpha1. It therefore appears that the Na/K-ATPase signal cascade can serve as a feed forward amplification for ROS with circulating …

The Relationship Between Obesity And Use Of Electronics For Individuals Under The Age Of 21, Zeeshan Haque Apr 2016

The Relationship Between Obesity And Use Of Electronics For Individuals Under The Age Of 21, Zeeshan Haque

Honors College Theses

Today, obesity is one of the largest health problems in America. There are several factors that contribute to obesity – but one problem that has been rising in this generation is the issues of children deciding to play video games, watch television, or spend time on the computer instead of healthier alternatives such as exercising or playing sports. One factor that could attribute to this is the large advancements in technology over the last few decades. The purpose of this research is to identify the relationship between electronics and obesity by analyzing data provided by the NHANES codebook. In this …

Export Of Insect Ecosystem Services From Hayed Native Prairie, Wayne J. Ohnesorg

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Natural areas, such as prairie, have the potential to provide the benefits of pest suppression and pollination for agricultural production. In Nebraska, prairie is often used for hay production. The impact of prairie hay production management practices on beneficial arthropods is not well understood. Four prairie hay meadows adjacent to row crop fields were selected in northeast Nebraska. The goal was to assess the impact of haying them on beneficial arthropods and the movement of natural enemies into adjacent crop fields. Three management practices were evaluated for hay harvested from prairie meadows one cut per growing season, two cuts per …

Pathways From Education To Fertility Decline: A Multi-Site Comparative Study, Kristin Snopkowski, Mary C. Towner, Mary K. Shenk, Heidi Colleran

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Women’s education has emerged as a central predictor of fertility decline, but the multiple possible mechanisms by which education can affect fertility have not been subject to detailed comparative investigation across multiple sites. In this paper, we use structural equation modelling to examine potential pathways between education and fertility in three different geographic locations: Matlab, Bangladesh; San Borja, Bolivia; and rural Poland. Using a comparable set of variables we show that the pathways by which education affects fertility differ in important ways, yet also show key similarities. In particular, we find that across all three contexts, education affects age at …

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the time-course of changes in electromyographic (EMG) and mechanomyographic (MMG), time and frequency domain responses during repeated, submaximal, concentric, isokinetic, forearm flexion muscle actions. Twelve men (mean age ± SD = 22.6 ± 2.2 yrs; body weight = 84.0 ± 8.3 kg; height = 178.6 ± 8.3 cm) performed 50 repeated, submaximal (65% of concentric peak torque), concentric muscle actions of the dominant forearm flexors on an isokinetic dynamometer at 60°·s-1. Surface EMG and MMG signals were simultaneously recorded from the biceps brachii muscle. Polynomial regression analyses (first, second, …

Improving The State Of Health Literacy Among American Adults: Why Community Outreach Methods Are More Effective Than Literacy-Level Screenings, Lydia Simpson Apr 2016

Improving The State Of Health Literacy Among American Adults: Why Community Outreach Methods Are More Effective Than Literacy-Level Screenings, Lydia Simpson

Honors Theses

Health literacy refers to an individual’s ability to access and process health information to make important decisions about their health. Unfortunately, millions of American adults have inadequate health literacy skills and are not able to navigate their way through the world of health care. This may lead to disastrous consequences and poor health outcomes. To improve health literacy, nationwide health education programs are imperative. Despite this, low health literacy is often ignored, or only considered for individuals suspected of having low health literacy who might then be administered a screening instrument. A better model for the American health care system …

Associations Of Birth Order With Early Adolescent Growth, Pubertal Onset, Blood Pressure And Size: Evidence From Hong Kong’S “Children Of 1997” Birth Cohort, Man Ki Kwok, Gabriel M. Leung, C. Mary Schooling

Publications and Research

Background: Birth order has been proposed as a cardiovascular risk factor, because the lower birth weight and greater infant weight gain typical of firstborns could programme metabolism detrimentally.

Methods: We examined the associations of birth order (firstborn or laterborn) with birth weight-for-gestational age, length/height and body mass index (BMI) z-scores during infancy, childhood, and puberty using generalized estimating equations, with age at pubertal onset using interval- censored regression and with age-, sex- and height-standardized blood pressure, height and BMI z-scores at 13 years using linear regression in a population-representative Chinese birth cohort: “Children of 1997” (n = 8,327).

Results: Compared …

Process Evaluation Of Healthy Habits, Healthy U: A School-Based Cancer Prevention Program, Kayla George, Kylee Geffre, Kyle Young, Carrie Smith, Alicia Anderson, Caile Spear, Mary Pritchard

College of Health Sciences Presentations

In the U.S., approximately onethird of cancer deaths are a result of poor nutrition and sedentary behaviors (ACS, 2015) and since 2008, cancer has been the leading cause of death in Idaho (CCAI, 2014). The American Institute of Cancer Research (2015) indicates about 50% of the most common cancers could be prevented by reducing negative health habits or by adopting positive ones.

The topic of cancer is only briefly mentioned in the Boise School District's eighthgrade health curriculums, thus the motivation behind the Healthy Habits Healthy U (HHHU) program. The program was designed to inform students about the relationship between …
