Implementation Of Exercise Is Medicine On Campus At Uri, Gabrielle E. Tyer

Senior Honors Projects

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics, the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the United States are chronic diseases, including heart disease, lung disease, cancer, cerebrovascular disease and diabetes. There has been recent attention paid to the role that higher levels of physical activity and lower levels of physical inactivity can play in the prevention and management of chronic disease. As a result of the strength of this evidence, the American College of Sports Medicine, in partnership with the American Medical Association, created the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative. The goal …

The History Of The Disease Concept Of Substance Dependency, Brooke A. Lewis May 2016

The History Of The Disease Concept Of Substance Dependency, Brooke A. Lewis

All NMU Master's Theses

The nomenclature used to signify substance dependence has evolved throughout history. Previously, substance dependence was referred to as specific forms of mania, as addiction, and as a habit. The origins of the disease concept of substance dependence have been disputed. Benjamin Rush (1746-1813) and Thomas Trotter (1760-1832) have been credited as being the founders of the movement to acknowledge substance dependence as a disease. Through efforts of scientists of the 19th and 20th centuries, the concept of substance dependence as a disease has become widely accepted by professionals, the medical community, and the government. Significant contributors to this concept include …

Nurses' Knowledge Of Eating Disorders, Carly S. Price May 2016

Nurses' Knowledge Of Eating Disorders, Carly S. Price

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Eating Disorders are a range of disorders marked by abnormal eating habits. These habits can often have a detrimental effect on the body and have the potential to complicate acute medical problems if they are a pre-existing condition. Due to this, it is important that members of the healthcare team be aware of the nature of these disorders from both a physical and mental health perspective in order to provide the best, most holistic care. In this study, individuals with nursing experience in acute medical and acute psychiatric care were asked 11 questions concerning the assessment and knowledge of eating …

The Relationship Between The Behaviors Of The Top 50 Most Endorsed Athletes In The World And The Monetary Value Of Their Endorsement Deals, Rogerio B. Ribeiro

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The top endorsed athletes in the world are most likely the ones who have the biggest impact on their sport. These athletes are usually among the best in their sport or they might have something special that creates a strong relationship between the athlete and his or her fans. It is possible to say that this relationship combined with their skills on and off of the fields, courts, or arenas is what makes these athletes special. Big companies all over the world feel attracted to these athletes and, as a result, they spend millions of dollars every year in order …

The Seed | Urban Vertical Farming Germinated, Michael Lima May 2016

The Seed | Urban Vertical Farming Germinated, Michael Lima

Architecture Senior Theses

A city works as an ecosystem in many ways. However, we currently do not live within that ecosystem, as the difference between an ecosystem and a city is the waste output and food input . Nature and society do not exist independently because there are no spaces of nature unaffected by man. With this in mind we need to reestablish our relationship with nature. Architecture and engineering can be used to create buildings that will allow humans to turn cities into ecosystems. This thesis argues that Urban Vertical Farms will produce social and economic hubs that will be a new …

Working For Food Stamps: Economic Citizenship And The Post-Fordist Welfare State In New York City, Maggie Dickinson May 2016

Working For Food Stamps: Economic Citizenship And The Post-Fordist Welfare State In New York City, Maggie Dickinson

Publications and Research

In the United States, the number of people receiving state-subsidized food aid has risen dramatically since 2001. This increase complicates the well-worn story that the post-Fordist welfare state has been continuously cut back in the neoliberal era, indicating instead that it is expanding to subsidize poor workers’ participation in the formal labor market. In New York City, welfare office workers operationalize policies that ease access to food assistance for poor workers who can demonstrate that they are formally employed. Meanwhile, workfare programs punish the unemployed and marginal workers by making them work for food stamps. This conservative, paternalistic welfare regime …

A Roof Overhead: Creating A Conceptual Long Term Day Facility For Street Children And Orphans In Tehran, Iran, Marjan Safdari

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

With approximately 1.5 million orphans, over 200,000 street children, and 2,500 cases of child violence each year, Iran is not an ideal place for children. Although government groups and non-governmental organizations (NGO) have tried to provide facilities and institutional care centers, there are still many shortages that need to be addressed. Facilities that provide something more than the basic needs of these children are necessary. Orphans and street children face many difficulties during different stages of their lives that cause psychological and social problems for them. In addition, health problems and lack of education are other issues that they face. …

Celiac And Other Autoimmune Bowel Diseases: Is Gluten Intolerance Or Urbanization The Main Culprit?, Miti Rupani

2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Two and a half million Americans claim to be affected by an autoimmune disease called Celiac Disease (CD), with the majority of this group calling themselves what is called gluten-intolerant and following a gluten-free diet (GFD). The question I am addressing is, how could gluten, present in staple foods that have sustained society for thousands of years, suddenly become so threatening? The central hypothesis of my research is if not gluten, what other components in today’s world is causing the immune system to attack the body, causing gastrointestinal problems. The statistical technique of surveying a random sample that represents a …

Predator Driven Evolution Of Brain Size Across Three Predation Intensities In Natural Populations, Whitnee Broyles May 2016

Predator Driven Evolution Of Brain Size Across Three Predation Intensities In Natural Populations, Whitnee Broyles

2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Vertebrates exhibit extensive variation in brain size, but why such diversity exists has been an area of interest for decades. Recent selection experiments revealed that the evolution of larger brains enhances survival in the presence of predators; increased predation should thus favor larger brains. This project tested the influence of predator-induced mortality on the evolution of brain size by exploring Trinidadian killifish (Rivulus hartii) from communities that vary in predation intensity for differences in brain size. This work showed that male (but not female) Rivulus from sites that lack predators exhibited significantly larger brains than males from sites with large …

Comprehensive Performance Evaluation Of A Wireless Grip Strength Measurement System For Telemedicine, Kaustubh Shinde May 2016

Comprehensive Performance Evaluation Of A Wireless Grip Strength Measurement System For Telemedicine, Kaustubh Shinde

2016 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Many daily functions require involvement of the flexor musculature of the forearms and hands; i.e., the muscles that produce grip strength. Grip strength is commonly used as a measure to track general wellness, disease progression, and the effects of therapeutic interventions. Most dynamometers simply show grip force generated on a display and lack data capture ability. As part of a more comprehensive, self-administered, web-based human performance measurement capability, a grip strength module is being developed and was the focus of a spring 2016 electrical engineering senior design project. This project focuses on the performance evaluation of that system, which incorporates …

Scale-Dependent Contributions Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors To Tree Species Composition Patterns In The Us Rocky Mountains, Paige E. Copenhaver-Parry

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Scale-dependence is recognized as a ubiquitous feature of ecological systems. Ecologists have traditionally hypothesized a hierarchy of factors affecting the composition of ecological communities, with biotic interactions exerting a dominant influence at fine spatial scales, and abiotic factors such as climate driving patterns at broad spatial scales. However, the role of biotic interactions at macroecological scales has been increasingly questioned, with many ecologists hypothesizing that biotic interactions may have discernable effects on species distributions. Here, I evaluate the relative effects of climate and species interactions on composition patterns of tree species in the US Rocky Mountains. At fine spatial scales, …

Tobacco-Gene Activity Profile In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Filifactor Alocis And Treponema Denticola., Neelima Chowdary Cherukumalli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Smoking is an established risk factor for periodontitis. Prior studies have shown that cigarette smoke extract (CSE) can induce profound phenotypic changes in Porphyromonas gingivalis and alters the virulence of this important periodontal pathogen. We hypothesized that CSE might also alter gene expression in established periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola, as well as in the emerging pathogen, Filifactor alocis. Oral bacteria were grown in CSE-conditioned medium (1000 ng/ml nicotine equivalents) or in unconditioned control medium. Total RNA was extracted and CSE-regulated genes were identified by comparison of the mRNA profiles of CSE with control cultures using RNA-Seq …

Acrolein Is A Critical Mediator Of Alcohol-Induced Liver And Intestinal Injury In Alcoholic Liver Disease., Wei-Yang (Jeremy) Chen May 2016

Acrolein Is A Critical Mediator Of Alcohol-Induced Liver And Intestinal Injury In Alcoholic Liver Disease., Wei-Yang (Jeremy) Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol consumption can cause alcoholic liver disease (ALD), which remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Chronic alcohol consumption causes a pro-oxidant environment in the liver and increases hepatic lipid peroxidation. Acrolein is the most reactive and toxic aldehyde generated through lipid peroxidation. Acrolein forms protein adducts and triggers endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and hepatocyte apoptosis, which are recognized etiologic factors in ALD. Several studies have established the critical role of the gut-liver axis in ALD pathogenesis, wherein alcohol-induced gut barrier dysfunction contributes to liver injury. This study investigates, in vitro and in vivo, the …

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Posaconazole, a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent, is approved for the prevention of invasive aspergillosis and candidiasis in addition to the treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis. There is evidence of efficacy in the treatment and prevention of rarer, more difficult-to-treat fungal infections. Posaconazole oral suspension solution has shown limitations with respect to fasting state absorption, elevated gastrointestinal pH and increased motility. The newly approved delayed-release oral tablet and intravenous solution formulations provide an attractive treatment option by reducing interpatient variability and providing flexibility in critically ill patients. On the basis of clinical experience and further clinical studies, posaconazole was found to be …
