Characterization Of Extraction Methods To Recover Phenolic-Rich Extracts From Black Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris) That Inhibit Alpha-Amylase And Alpha-Glucosidase Using Response Surface Approaches, Mazen Alharbi May 2016

Characterization Of Extraction Methods To Recover Phenolic-Rich Extracts From Black Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris) That Inhibit Alpha-Amylase And Alpha-Glucosidase Using Response Surface Approaches, Mazen Alharbi

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Black beans contain high phenolic contents that are considered potent antioxidants. Relatively little is known about their ability to inhibit the carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase from releasing glucose from starch and/or disaccharides. The objective of this project was to determine the optimum procedures for extracting total phenols (TP), total flavonoids (TF) and total condensed tannins (TCT) from black beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), and then to determine the ability of the phenolic rich extracts to inhibit α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Due to their high phenolic levels, it was hypothesized that black beans would be an effective inhibitor of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, which …

Association Of 24-32wk Maternal Triglyceride Levels And Neonatal Birth Weight At The Aga Khan University Hospital, Demetrius Mududa Omondi May 2016

Association Of 24-32wk Maternal Triglyceride Levels And Neonatal Birth Weight At The Aga Khan University Hospital, Demetrius Mududa Omondi

Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Introduction: The association of neonatal birth weight and mid-term maternal lipid levels has been demonstrated in several studies with elevated serum triglyceride levels shown to be a strong predictor of the large for gestational age baby/ fetal macrosomia. Maternal diabetes remains the strongest risk factor for developing a LGA/macrosomic baby explained by the Pederson hypothesis. However non-diabetic macrosomia is still an obstetric dilemma with the attendant fetal and maternal complications. This phenomenon could be explained by altered maternal lipid metabolism as lipids have been shown to be important for normal fetal growth and development. Objective: Our primary objective was to …

Green Roofs And Urban Biodiversity: Their Role As Invertebrate Habitat And The Effect Of Design On Beetle Community, Sydney Marie Gonsalves May 2016

Green Roofs And Urban Biodiversity: Their Role As Invertebrate Habitat And The Effect Of Design On Beetle Community, Sydney Marie Gonsalves

Dissertations and Theses

With over half the world's population now living in cities, urban areas represent one of earth's few ecosystems that are increasing in extent, and are sites of altered biogeochemical cycles, habitat fragmentation, and changes in biodiversity. However, urban green spaces, including green roofs, can also provide important pools of biodiversity and contribute to regional gamma diversity, while novel species assemblages can enhance some ecosystem services. Green roofs may also mitigate species loss in urban areas and have been shown to support a surprising diversity of invertebrates, including rare and endangered species. In the first part of this study I reviewed …

The Effect Of Marine Protected Areas On Fishers' Income In The Philippines, Giselle Pb. Samonte, Victoria C. Ramenzoni, Terence U. Dacles, Dominik Fortenbacher

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

The fisheries sector is vital to the Philippine economy, providing substantial employment and income, contributing export earnings, and meeting local food security and nutrition requirements. To protect coastal and marine habitat and to sustain fisheries, over 1000 marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established, in the Philippines. This paper provides empirical evidence on the variance of net revenues linked with MPA establishment and the possible range of relocation costs for fishing effort displaced by an MPA. A total of 424 households were randomly selected from 18 barangays (villages) adjacent to MPAs in three regions in the Philippines. Results show that …

People Centred Healthcare Service Delivery - By People For People, Shaon Sengupta, Sanya Khanna May 2016

People Centred Healthcare Service Delivery - By People For People, Shaon Sengupta, Sanya Khanna

ServDes Conference Series

Primary healthcare is the one of the most efficient and cost-effective way to organize health systems. However, delivery of primary healthcare is a challenge for a number of countries as they have low resource setup and high population count. To address this challenge, various health policies & programs, including IT solutions have been devised and deployed. Ways to empower and mobilize Community Health Workers (CHWs) have proven to be beneficial as they address issues specific to the community that leads to effective implementation of care plans. However, as research suggests, numerous programs have failed in the past because of unrealistic …

Method Of Supplementing Cytokine, Chemokine And Growth Factors In Donor Human Milk, Maureen E. Groer, Terri Ashmeade May 2016

Method Of Supplementing Cytokine, Chemokine And Growth Factors In Donor Human Milk, Maureen E. Groer, Terri Ashmeade

USF Patents

Donor milk has become a standard of care for feeding preterm infants, particularly those with gestational ages of 34 weeks or less, whose mothers are not lactating or not producing sufficient milk quantities. However, prior to distribution, donor milk is required to undergo pasteurization, typically using the Holder method, which is believed to destroy immune proteins in the milk and denature many other proteins. Donor milk has been found to contain concentrations of chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors, evidencing the value of donor milk over formula. In light of the findings, donor milk is supplemented with chemokines, cytokines, and growth …

Kimmel Cancer Center Papers, Presentations, and Grand Rounds

Cancer is now viewed as a stem cell disease. There is still no consensus on the metabolic characteristics of cancer stem cells, with several studies indicating that they are mainly glycolytic and others pointing instead to mitochondrial metabolism as their principal source of energy. Cancer stem cells also seem to adapt their metabolism to microenvironmental changes by conveniently shifting energy production from one pathway to another, or by acquiring intermediate metabolic phenotypes. Determining the role of cancer stem cell metabolism in carcinogenesis has become a major focus in cancer research, and substantial efforts are conducted towards discovering clinical targets.

An Investigation Of Invasion: Boater Knowledge Concerning Aquatic Invasive Species And The Influence Of The New Zealand Mud Snail On Benthic Food Webs, Samuel Anthony Cimino May 2016

An Investigation Of Invasion: Boater Knowledge Concerning Aquatic Invasive Species And The Influence Of The New Zealand Mud Snail On Benthic Food Webs, Samuel Anthony Cimino

Dissertations and Theses

Invasive species are second only to habitat loss as a leading cause of native species displacement and the management of invasive species costs hundreds of billions annually. Invasion is often conceptualized as a series of stages (Transport, Introduction, Establishment, and Spread), which encourages ecologists to isolate factors that might enable a species to pass from one stage to another and therefore guide prevention or impact management. This thesis addresses each stage of invasion and attempts to determine where management might succeed in preventing invasion or minimizing impacts. The transport and introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS) was analyzed by conducting …

BACKGROUND:

The Antenatal Corticosteroid Trial assessed the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of a multifaceted intervention to increase the use of antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) in mothers at risk of preterm birth at all levels of care in low and middle-income countries. The intervention effectively increased the use of ACS but was associated with an overall increase in neonatal deaths. We aimed to explore plausible pathways through which this intervention increased neonatal mortality.

METHODS:

We conducted a series of secondary analyses to assess whether ACS or other components of the multifaceted intervention that might have affected the quality of care contributed to …

Nutrient Recycling By Eared Grebes In The Great Salt Lake, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover May 2016

Nutrient Recycling By Eared Grebes In The Great Salt Lake, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling in lakes can be impacted by numerous abiotic and biotic factors. Large animals, such as birds and mammals, may recycle nutrients within a system or bring them in from surrounding habitats or different landscapes. Eared Grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) congregate in large numbers in the fall on the Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, and may have an important role in recycling nutrients from macroinvertebrates back into the water column. We evaluated the role of Eared Grebes in N and P cycling within the GSL by estimating the magnitude of their nutrient recycling capacity. We estimated …

Socioeconomic Status And Its Relationship To Educational Resources, Christene M. Sledge May 2016

Socioeconomic Status And Its Relationship To Educational Resources, Christene M. Sledge

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between socioeconomic status and access to educational resources was examined. According to a national report on school funding, New Jersey rates third in the nation for equality in school funding (Baker, Sciarra and Farrie 2015). Although disparities in school funding are lower than average, students of low socioeconomic status are still at a disadvantage when entering school. The ways in which school districts spend their money was believed to be affected by the socioeconomic status of the students who attend their schools. Literature was reviewed on the ways in which socioeconomic status has been associated with various health …

Changes In The Adult Glun2b Associated Proteome Following Adolescent Intermittent Ethanol Exposure, H. Scott Swartzwelder, Mary-Louise Risher, Kelsey M. Miller, Roger J. Colban, Danner G. Winder, Tiffany A. Wills May 2016

Changes In The Adult Glun2b Associated Proteome Following Adolescent Intermittent Ethanol Exposure, H. Scott Swartzwelder, Mary-Louise Risher, Kelsey M. Miller, Roger J. Colban, Danner G. Winder, Tiffany A. Wills

Biomedical Sciences

Adolescent alcohol use is the strongest predictor for alcohol use disorders. In rodents, adolescents have distinct responses to acute ethanol, and prolonged alcohol exposure during adolescence can maintain these phenotypes into adulthood. One brain region that is particularly sensitive to the effects of both acute and chronic ethanol exposure is the hippocampus. Adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure (AIE) produces long lasting changes in hippocampal synaptic plasticity and dendritic morphology, as well as in the susceptibility to acute ethanol-induced spatial memory impairment. Given the pattern of changes in hippocampal structure and function, one potential target for these effects is the ethanol sensitive …

Do Natural Disasters Induce More Crime?, Michael Lentini, Plamen Nikolov, Matthew Schwartz May 2016

Do Natural Disasters Induce More Crime?, Michael Lentini, Plamen Nikolov, Matthew Schwartz

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

The Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 resulted in grave consequences for South East Asia. Indonesia, in particular, had the highest death toll, losing over 150,000 people. Indonesia’s coastal region Aceh was the hardest hit by this disaster. Exploiting exogenous spatial variation at the district level, we use difference-in-difference analysis to estimate the causal effect of the 2004 disaster on subsequent crime rates. We find that after the tsunami, total annual crime rate went down, on average, by 244 crimes per annum.

School of Information Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: PubMed is a widely used database for scientists to find biomedical-related literature. Due to the complexity of the selected research subject and its interdisciplinary nature, as well as the exponential growth in the number of disparate pieces of biomedical literature, it is an overwhelming challenge for scientists to define the right search strategies and quickly locate all related information. Specialized subsets and groupings of controlled vocabularies, such as Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), can enhance information retrieval in specialized domains, such as stem cell research. There is a need to develop effective search strategies and convenient solutions for knowledge organization …

Appropriate Gestational Weight Gain, Eugelyn Opalec Santos May 2016

Appropriate Gestational Weight Gain, Eugelyn Opalec Santos

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Over the past 30 years, excessive weight gain during pregnancy among American women has been a significant concern, resulting in serious health consequences to mothers and their newborns. During 2011, 48% of U.S. women gained more than the ideal amount of weight during pregnancy. Several international studies have also documented that excessive weight gain during pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. As a result, one in ten babies were born prematurely in the United States in 2014. Based on the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) guidelines (2009), the purpose of this project was to implement the Healthy …

National Security Implications Of Water Insecurity, Miranda Elizabeth Morton May 2016

National Security Implications Of Water Insecurity, Miranda Elizabeth Morton

Senior Theses

Prior to the Syrian uprising that began in March 2011, the country experienced an acute, multiyear drought, likely induced by climate change, which wrecked havoc on the agricultural sector, destroying the livelihoods of nearly a quarter of the population. Challenges associated with water use and availability played a direct role in exacerbating drought-like conditions and in deteriorating Syrian economic conditions. Urbanization from internally displaced farmers, coupled with rising food prices and a depressed economy, ripened conditions for social unrest and mobilization. The historical economic and agriculture policies in effect since Hafez al-Assad’s reign, current President Bashar al-Assad’s father and predecessor, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

The purpose of this evidence based practice (EBP) project was to evaluate an electronic medical record (EMR) based American Diabetes Association pre diabetes screening protocol in a primary care setting. Pre diabetes is an under screened condition that can result in a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and the risk is 56% lower for those who had returned to normal glucose regulation versus those who consistently had pre diabetes. Patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 were flagged in the EMR at intake. Providers assessed for a previous HbA1C within the last year, if a HbA1c had been …

Smoking By Restrained Eaters Following A Food Prime In The Context Of An Alternative Distractor, Michelle Kovacs May 2016

Smoking By Restrained Eaters Following A Food Prime In The Context Of An Alternative Distractor, Michelle Kovacs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Prior research found that female smokers with elevated dietary restraint (“high-restrainers”) smoked more after a disinhibiting food event (Kovacs, Correa, & Brandon, 2014). The current study aimed to determine if high-restrainers smoked merely to distract themselves from eating, or if the appetite/weight-control aspects of smoking played a role. Female smokers (N = 128) attended a laboratory session and were randomized to receive a milkshake prime (Prime condition) or not (No-Prime condition). All participants then received ad-lib access to tempting foods, cigarettes, and a computer tablet with internet access. Our main aims were to test the effect of the prime on …
