A Systems Framework For Development Projects And Partnerships In Eye Health Training, Diane Wallace Jun 2016

A Systems Framework For Development Projects And Partnerships In Eye Health Training, Diane Wallace

Doctoral

Purpose: Development projects in eye health have evolved over the past fifteen years in response to VISION 2020: The Right to Sight. Estimates that 285 million people, mainly in the developing world, are needlessly vision impaired largely due to the lack of trained eye health professionals have moved development initiatives away from vertical, service delivery approaches towards the establishment of more sustainable, locally owned professional training programmes in an effort to ensure long term production of adequately trained human resource capacity to address this challenge. The Mozambique Eyecare Project was one such initiative, established as a solution to the challenge …

Sociodemographic And Geospatial Correlates Of Stillbirths And Neonatal Mortality In Indonesia (1993–2007), Alka Dev Jun 2016

Sociodemographic And Geospatial Correlates Of Stillbirths And Neonatal Mortality In Indonesia (1993–2007), Alka Dev

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Little research has focused on the determinants of stillbirth and neonatal mortality in Indonesia despite the fact that the country has one of the highest rates of stillbirths in the world and one of the highest rates of neonatal mortality in Asia. Several areas have not been explored due to data limitations, such as shared risk factors and measurement challenges, which can inform health policy and interventions and guide future research. This dissertation addresses this gap by comparing measurement challenges for stillbirth and neonatal mortality and identifying risk factors for both using Indonesian reproductive health survey data. Differences in estimates …

Competitiveness, Profitability, Input Demand And Output Supply Of Maize Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, M Kazal, I Begum, M Alam

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The study assesses international competitiveness, profitability, output supply and input demand of maize production using a farm survey data of 165 farmers from two major maize growing areas (i.e., Dinajpur and Lalmonirhat districts) of northwestern Bangladesh. Results revealed that maize production is globally competitive and, therefore, can successfully substitute its import. Maize production is also profitable at the farm level (Benefit Cost Ratio = 1.21) with no adverse influence of farm size on yield and profitability. Maize farmers are also responsive to changes in market prices of inputs and outputs. A 1% increase in maize price will increase output supply …

Bathymodioline Mussel Dominated Miocene Whale Fall From Italy, S Danise, L Bertolaso, S Dominici Jun 2016

Bathymodioline Mussel Dominated Miocene Whale Fall From Italy, S Danise, L Bertolaso, S Dominici

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The bones of an unidentified odontocete from the Langhian Pantano Formation (~ 15 million years ago), found near the town of Carpineti (Reggio Emilia), Northern Italy, are associated with more than two hundred specimens of the bathymodioline mussel Adipicola apenninica n. sp., rare specimens of Thyasira sp. and one Lucinidae indet. Based on comparisons with modern and other fossil whale fall communities, the fossil molluscs associated with the odontocete represent a whale fall community during the sulphophilic stage of the ecological succession. Our finding indicates the presence of chemosynthetic communities associated with organic remains in the proto-Mediterranean-Atlantic region at least …

Spontaneous Ileostomy Closure, Mohammad S. Alyami, Peter W. Lundberg, Eddy G. Cotte, Olivier J. Glehen

Saudi Medical Journal

Iatrogenic ileostomies are routinely placed during colorectal surgery for the diversion of intestinal contents to permit healing of the distal anastomosis prior to elective reversal. We present an interesting case of spontaneous closure of a diverting ileostomy without any adverse effects to the patient. A 65-year-old woman, positive for hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer type-I, with locally invasive cancer of the distal colon underwent en-bloc total colectomy, hysterectomy, and bilateral salpingoophorectomy with creation of a proximal loop ileostomy. The ostomy temporarily closed without reoperation at 10 weeks, after spontaneously reopening, it definitively closed, again without surgical intervention at 18 weeks following …

A View Of Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jennifer Reynolds Jun 2016

A View Of Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jennifer Reynolds

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Parents of children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encounter many stressors beyond the typical parenting pressures that parents of children without disabilities face. Along with the additional challenges, parents of children with ASD face complex needs that differ from parents of children with other types of disabilities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to consider the needs of parents (N = 10) with children with ASD served in a public school system in North Georgia through the framework of Maslow’s (1943) Theory of Human Motivation. A transcendental phenomenological design was used to provide a voice to parents of children …

1916: Dublin Youths' Sweet Revolution, Marjorie Deleuze May 2016

1916: Dublin Youths' Sweet Revolution, Marjorie Deleuze

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper examines the children of the slums of Dublin in 1916 for whom a sweet treat was a very rare occurrence. The shop looting that happened during the Easter Insurrection of 1916 gives an interesting insight into the children's priorities at the time. Anecdotal though the accounts of the looting may be, they shed some light on both the children's perception of the event and the beginning of a new era of sweet food consumption. Whilst adults were busy fighting for a free Ireland, a bunch of children were having their own revolution, a taste buds revolution.

From Kongri To Diri Ak Djondjon: Slavery, Creolisation And Culinary Genesis In Saint-Domingue And Independent Haiti, Anthony F. Buccini

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper discusses the genesis of the cuisine of Haiti which is one of a relatively limited number of cuisines in the world that is genuinely a creole cuisine. This was further cemented by the Haitian Revolution's abrupt ending of slavery and the far-reaching reduction of European influence which allowed its creolised way of life to develop in a setting that was freer of external influence than other Atlantic and Indian Ocean creole societies.

The Sous Vide Revolution: Coming Full Circle And Beyond, Ulrich Hoeche

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

For the purpose of this research, academic material and online sources were utilised to clarify the meaning of the key term sous vide.

The Sous Vide Advisory Committee (1991) says ‘Sous Vide (also known as Cuisine en Papillote) is an interrupted catering system in which raw or par-cooked food is sealed into a vacuumised laminated plastic pouch or container, heat treated by controlled cooking, rapidly cooled and then reheated for service after a period of chilled storage’. According to Herbst (1995), the term ‘refers to a cooking method of French origin and directly translates into “under vacuum”’. In the words …

Intersections Of Poverty, Geography, And Custodial Grandparent Caregiving In Appalachia, Deborah L. Phillips, Ben Alexander-Eitzman May 2016

Intersections Of Poverty, Geography, And Custodial Grandparent Caregiving In Appalachia, Deborah L. Phillips, Ben Alexander-Eitzman

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of custodial grandparenting in Central Appalachia to other areas in Appalachia and the rest of the U.S., to explore how recent economic changes have affected poverty rates of custodial grandparents in all of these areas, and to explore what influences the probability of custodial grandparenting. We hypothesize that the recent economic upheaval of the Great Recession has pressured many families to rely on grandparents to provide care for their grandchildren and that these trends are particularly evident in the Appalachian region due to longstanding historical trends and unique cultural factors. …

Concerns And Supports Of Grandfamilies Using Formal Services: Do They Have The Help They Need?, Susan M. Collins, Christine A. Fruhauf, Kimberly Bundy-Fazioli

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

The objective of this exploratory study was to discover the functional and psychosocial concerns of grandfamilies already receiving support services in their community, and to ask if they had the help they needed. Data were gathered from a convenience sample of 16 grandparents who were raising their grandchildren and were involved with a support group or a grandfamily workshop. Results indicated that grandparents affiliated with formal supports still experience psychosocial concerns (i.e., child’s emotional problems) and functional concerns (i.e., financial strain). Suggestions are included for further development on this measure as derived from the literature, service provider observations, and grandfamily …

Eater/Eaten: What Revolves Around Who?, David Szanto May 2016

Eater/Eaten: What Revolves Around Who?, David Szanto

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper examines a number of experimental moments when things were eaten and things ate - in multiple senses. Together, they probe a key question about gastronomic ontologies: when it comes to arranging food knowldege, what ordering systems make sense? It is a question that may seem inane, imaginative, and/or irrelevant, depending on one's motives and perspectives. Unpacking this question may help to reconfigure some of the other questions address in this area of study.

Nutrition Buddy: Enabling Behavior Change Through Wearables, Recommendations, And Digital Avatars, Daniel J. Chen

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

In recent years, significant progress has been made in health technology through advancements in mobile technology, wearable computing, and connected devices. These advancements have created lightweight or even automated experiences for users in vital aspects of health such as exercise and sleep tracking. Despite these advancements, one area of health, nutrition, remains stifled by cumbersome user interaction. We present Nutrition Buddy, a novel approach to nutrition tracking which utilizes a simplified data model that allows for lightweight interactions, effective wearable technology, and relevant recommendations provided by a digital nutritionist "buddy" to facilitate behavior change.

Articles

Juniper and piñon coniferous woodlands have increased 2- to 10-fold in nine ecoregions spanning the Intermountain Region of the western United States. Control of piñon-juniper woodlands by mechanical treatments and prescribed fire are commonly applied to recover sagebrush steppe rangelands. Recently, the Sage Grouse Initiative has made conifer removal a major part of its program to reestablish sagebrush habitat for sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and other species. We analyzed data sets from previous and ongoing studies across the Great Basin characterizing cover response of perennial and annual forbs that are consumed by sage grouse to mechanical, prescribed fire, …

A sizeable portion of the societal drain from cocaine abuse results from the complications of in utero drug exposure. Because of challenges in using humans and mammalian model organisms as test subjects, much debate remains about the impact of in utero cocaine exposure. Zebrafish offer a number of advantages as a model in longitudinal toxicology studies and are quite sensitive physiologically and behaviorally to cocaine. In this study, we have used zebrafish to model the effects of embryonic pre-exposure to cocaine on development and on subsequent cardiovascular physiology and cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in longitudinal adults. Larval fish showed …

Melanocortin 1 Receptor: Structure, Function, And Regulation, Erin M. Wolf Horrell, Mary C. Boulanger, John A. D'Orazio

Physiology Faculty Publications

The melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) is a melanocytic Gs protein coupled receptor that regulates skin pigmentation, UV responses, and melanoma risk. It is a highly polymorphic gene, and loss of function correlates with a fair, UV-sensitive, and melanoma-prone phenotype due to defective epidermal melanization and sub-optimal DNA repair. MC1R signaling, achieved through adenylyl cyclase activation and generation of the second messenger cAMP, is hormonally controlled by the positive agonist melanocortin, the negative agonist agouti signaling protein, and the neutral antagonist β-defensin 3. Activation of cAMP signaling up-regulates melanin production and deposition in the epidermis which functions to limit UV …
