Adjudicating Health-Related Rights: Proposed Considerations For The United Nations Committee On Economic, Social And Cultural Rights, And Other Supra-National Tribunals, Alicia Ely Yamin, Angela Duger

Chicago Journal of International Law

This article examines how various supra-national tribunals have approached adjudication of health-related rights, and makes proposals with respect to some special considerations posed by health-related cases that the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and other supra-national bodies will invariably face. After briefly setting out the contours of the right to health under international law, we stress the importance of an approach to adjudication that acknowledges underlying determinants, but also that defines the obligations of the health sector, explicitly acknowledging the interdependence and indivisibility of health with human rights. Second, reviewing some lessons from other supra-national tribunals, …

Food Rescue Program Evaluation Three Square Food Bank, Anna Caputo, Rich Easter, Rosa Rosas, Mark Sakurada

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With 48 million Americans currently struggling with hunger, addressing food insecurity in U.S. communities remains a persistent issue in need of a remedy. Conversely, food waste is the single largest material deposited in American landfills, with an estimated 70 billion pounds wasted annually. The recovery of this food waste, or “food rescue” in food banking jargon, offers an ideal solution to fight hunger in our communities. With Three Square Food Bank (Three Square) consistently seeking to increase food rescue and distribution in its efforts to eliminate hunger, the need to ensure operational effectiveness and efficiency through programmatic change and improvement …

Structure And Functions Of Angiotensinogen, Hong Lu, Lisa A. Cassis, Craig W. Vander Kooi, Alan Daugherty Jul 2016

Structure And Functions Of Angiotensinogen, Hong Lu, Lisa A. Cassis, Craig W. Vander Kooi, Alan Daugherty

Saha Cardiovascular Research Center Faculty Publications

Angiotensinogen (AGT) is the sole precursor of all angiotensin peptides. Although AGT is generally considered as a passive substrate of the renin–angiotensin system, there is accumulating evidence that the regulation and functions of AGT are intricate. Understanding the diversity of AGT properties has been enhanced by protein structural analysis and animal studies. In addition to whole-body genetic deletion, AGT can be regulated in vivo by cell-specific procedures, adeno-associated viral approaches and antisense oligonucleotides. Indeed, the availability of these multiple manipulations of AGT in vivo has provided new insights into the multifaceted roles of AGT. In this review, the combination of …

What’S Really At Steak: How Conflicts Of Interest Within The Fda And Usda Fail To Protect Consumers, Christine Beaderstadt

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Chipotle shut down all of its restaurants nationwide in response to the ongoing food poisoning outbreaks. The deadly pathogen e. coli sickened people from the East coast to the West, and cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. This Comment explores how these pathogenic outbreaks continue to happen, despite having federal agencies that are tasked with outbreak prevention. The increase of pathogenic outbreaks like e. coli and salmonella correlates to looser enforcement of federal regulations by executive agencies like the FDA and USDA. These agencies are often staffed by former lobbyists of the meat and poultry industries, and some who …

Optimizing Conservation Policy: The Importance Of Seasonal Variation In Hunting And Meat Consumption On The Masoala Peninsula Of Madagascar, Cortni Borgerson

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Studying seasonal hunting patterns can be critical for developing sound actions for conservation and public health. As availability of funds to implement conservation policy is limited, it is essential to focus efforts during the most critical times of year. During July 2011-June 2012 I recorded direct observations of hunting of forest mammals, and conducted daily 24-hour recall surveys (2 weeks per month over 11 months: August 2011-June 2012), and interviews of all households in a focal village on the Masoala Peninsula of Madagascar to investigate (1) what drives seasonal hunting patterns and (2) how seasonal variation in consumption of wildlife …

The Fourth Sector: Creating A For-Profit Social Enterprise Sector To Directly Combat The Lack Of Social Mobility In Marginalized Communities, Carlos Jurado Jul 2016

The Fourth Sector: Creating A For-Profit Social Enterprise Sector To Directly Combat The Lack Of Social Mobility In Marginalized Communities, Carlos Jurado

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

The United States is currently facing record high rates of income inequality and, as a result, there is a general lack of social mobility. This is troublesome for Americans because of the potential disastrous implications for the United States economy. The current state of the American market has enabled an environment where a few elite continue to hoard large amounts of the profits generated by the economy while the lower class has experienced a substantial growth in population with incomparable economic growth. In addition, the middle class has significantly diminished and can soon be rendered ineffective in its role as …

Anthropocene Agricultural Law, James Ming Chen Jul 2016

Anthropocene Agricultural Law, James Ming Chen

Texas A&M Law Review

This Essay takes stock of humanity’s arguably illusory victory over its old Malthusian foe. Having staved off imminent starvation, wealthy consumers in the United States and other developed nations are now free to focus their legal and political energy on the expressive aspects of food. Such bagatelles come at the price of ignoring deeper threats to the ecological and economic underpinnings of agricultural production. Had we world enough and time, food as ornament would be no crime. The onset of the Anthropocene, however, demands more serious attention to older, more venerable sources of concern. Resource exhaustion and evolutionary biology remain …

Choose Health Action Teens: A Review Of A Teens As Teachers Nutritional Education Training Curriculum, Jeffrey Flesch, Joy Lile, Mary Arnold

Journal of Youth Development

This review draws from published research related to the best practices for the utilization of teens as teachers to examine Choose Health Action Teens (CHAT), a teen’s as teachers (TAT) training curriculum. Research shows that there are various components necessary to build a high quality TAT program. Most of these components fall under four areas in which training is necessary for teens and adults: Teaching strategies, youth/child development, subject matter to be taught, and youth-adult partnerships. These four areas provide a framework to review the Choose Health Action Teens (CHAT) (Crosiar & Wolfe, 2013) teens as teachers training program curriculum.

Comparison Of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines (Il-6, Il-1α And Il-1β) Released By Mpi And Marco (-/-) Knockout Cells When Stimulated By Heat Killed Fungi- Candida Albicans And Aspergillus Niger, Sherin Chacko Jul 2016

Comparison Of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines (Il-6, Il-1α And Il-1β) Released By Mpi And Marco (-/-) Knockout Cells When Stimulated By Heat Killed Fungi- Candida Albicans And Aspergillus Niger, Sherin Chacko

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Background: Alveolar Macrophages serve the first line of defence against invading pathogens within the lungs. During the innate immune response, they recognise pathogens such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger as “non-self”, phagocytosing them before the pathogen can infiltrate the body and cause disease. There are many Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs) that detect specific patterns on the pathogen (PAMPs), inducing an immune response which recruits different immune cells to the site of infection, releasing many cytokines that help with recruiting and clearance of the pathogen. MARCO is a Scavenger receptor that has an important role in the recognition and response …

Comparison Of Iron Supplementation And Albendazole On Anemia In Ghanaian Children, Megan M. Zitting Jul 2016

Comparison Of Iron Supplementation And Albendazole On Anemia In Ghanaian Children, Megan M. Zitting

Theses and Dissertations

Half a billion school aged children suffer from anemia, with the majority of anemia caused by iron deficiency. Researchers have shown a strong correlation between low hemoglobin levels and presence of intestinal parasites in children with anemia. Childhood anemia has profound negative effects on physical growth, maturation, and cognitive development leading to poorer educational achievement. Using hemoglobin as a measure of anemia, this quasi-experimental study investigated impact of either iron supplementation or an antiparasitic medication on hemoglobin levels in two groups of children in a rural region of Eastern Ghana. Surprisingly, after a 6-month intervention period, hemoglobin levels in both …

Evaluation Of The Phase Training Model Of Cancer Rehabilitation, Jessica Marlene Brown Jul 2016

Evaluation Of The Phase Training Model Of Cancer Rehabilitation, Jessica Marlene Brown

Dissertations

Exercise is a well-established method of alleviating cancer-related toxicities during and following treatment in cancer survivors. Due to this clear evidence, exercise-based rehabilitation programs have begun to emerge. Of concern, specific recommendations of exercise prescription for patients at different time points on the cancer continuum have not been developed, and available guidelines are broad and unclear. The Phase Training Model of cancer rehabilitation was created to address this issue and replace our previously used method of exercise-based prescription and intervention. Purpose: To evaluate the effects of the Phase Training Model on cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength (MS), and cancer-related fatigue (CRF) …
