The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project: The Issue Of Resettlement And Rehabilitation, Arjun Joshi, Namrata Maheshwari
The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project: The Issue Of Resettlement And Rehabilitation, Arjun Joshi, Namrata Maheshwari
Socio-Legal Review
The paper is a critical analysis of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development project in Ahmedabad. It scrutinises the manner in which the judicial and administrative dimensions bolstering its implementation obliterated the fundamental and human rights of the families residing on the banks of the river. The paper highlights the abysmal resettlement provided to the informal settlers and the politics that fragmented the social relations of communities residing at the riverfront. Further, it emphasises on the need for an inclusive resettlement and rehabilitation framework that engages with the concerns of all stakeholders and prevents marginalisation of the urban poor in the process …

Bovine colostrum (BC) is used in humans as a nutritional supplement for immune support and has been shown to reduce Respiratory disease (RD). Other nutritional supplements, minerals and vitamins including mannan oligosaccharides (MOS), zinc and vitamins A, C and E have also been used for immune support. The aim of this prospective blinded randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of a BC, MOS, zinc and vitamin based enhanced bovine colostrum supplement (BCS) on incidence and duration of RD occurring in yearling horses. 109 yearlings on two Thoroughbred farms in Central Kentucky were randomly assigned to treatment or placebo …

© 2016 American Society of Plant Biologists. All rights reserved. A crucial prerequisite for plant growth and survival is the maintenance of potassium uptake, especially when high sodium surrounds the root zone. The Arabidopsis HIGH-AFFINITY K+ TRANSPORTER1 (HKT1), and its homologs in other salt-sensitive dicots, contributes to salinity tolerance by removing Na+ from the transpiration stream. However, TsHKT1;2, one of three HKT1 copies in Thellungiella salsuginea, a halophytic Arabidopsis relative, acts as a K+transporter in the presence of Na+ in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Amino-acid sequence comparisons indicated differences between TsHKT1;2 and most other published HKT1 sequences with respect to an …

© 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Knowledge concerning mechanisms that control proliferation and differentiation of preadipocytes is essential to our understanding of adipocyte hyperplasia and the development of obesity. Evidence has shown that temporal regulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation and dephosphorylation is critical for coupling extracellular stimuli to cellular growth and differentiation. Using differentiating 3T3-L1 preadipocytes as a model of adipocyte hyperplasia, we examined a role for dual-specificity phosphatase 1 (DUSP1) on the timely modulation of MAPK signaling during states of growth arrest, proliferation, and differentiation. Using real-time reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR), we report that DUSP1 is induced during …

Background So far, more than 170 loci have been associated with circulating lipid levels through genomewide association studies (GWAS). These associations are largely driven by common variants, their function is often not known, and many are likely to be markers for the causal variants. In this study we aimed to identify more new rare and low-frequency functional variants associated with circulating lipid levels. Methods We used the 1000 Genomes Project as a reference panel for the imputations of GWAS data from ~60 000 individuals in the discovery stage and ~90 000 samples in the replication stage. Results Our study resulted …

Six hundred thirty five oat (Avena sativa L.) lines and 4561 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci were used to evaluate population structure, linkage disequilibrium (LD), and genotype-phenotype association with heading date. The first five principal components (PCs) accounted for 25.3% of genetic variation. Neither the eigenvalues of the first 25 PCs nor the cross-validation errors from K = 1 to 20 model-based analyses suggested a structured population. However, the PC and K = 2 model-based analyses supported clustering of lines on spring oat vs. southern United States origin, accounting for 16% of genetic variation (p < 0.0001). Single-locus F-statistic (FST) in the highest 1% of the distribution suggested linkage groups that may be differentiated between the two population subgroups. Population structure and kinship-corrected LD of r2 = 0.10 was observed at an average pairwise distance of 0.44 cM (0.71 and 2.64 cM within spring and southern oat, respectively). On most linkage groups LD decay was slower within southern lines than within the spring lines. A notable exception was found on linkage group Mrg28, where LD decay was substantially slower in the spring subpopulation. It is speculated that this may be caused by a heterogeneous translocation event on this chromosome. Association with heading date was most consistent across location-years on linkage groups Mrg02, Mrg12, Mrg13, and Mrg24.

Increasing Health Care Access In Yemen Through Community-Based Health Insurance, Matthew Fuss
Increasing Health Care Access In Yemen Through Community-Based Health Insurance, Matthew Fuss
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This Note addresses the implementation of health insurance reform in Yemen. As a result of a system of user fees and a lack of health insurance, the current regime poses serious barriers to health care access for Yemen's uninsured citizens. When the dust settles from the ongoing conflict with Houthi rebels, the time will be ripe for replacing Yemen's health financing system. In order to rebuild trust and curb abuse in the public health system, legal reforms are required to implement health insurance through decentralized decision-making and accountability measures. The Welfare Regime Framework accommodates these general reforms through policies that …

- Improving Rates of Vaccination after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: Patients who have undergone a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) for a hematological cancer usually lose the immunity they had acquired through vaccination. Although guidelines exist for vaccinating immunocompromised transplant recipients, many patients go unvaccinated or do not complete the series of vaccinations. An ongoing initiative at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is using a multipronged approach to improve rates of vaccination after HSCT.

Hepatitis C Screening, Susan Hayes
Hepatitis C Screening, Susan Hayes
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common blood-borne pathogen in the United States. The “Baby Boomer” population, adults born between the years 1945 and 1965, is considered a high-risk population as 75% of adults with HCV were born within this timeframe. The U. S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) made it a Grade B recommendation in 2013 for all adults born in this birth cohort to be screened for HCV even if asymptomatic. Hepatitis C virus is associated with many negative sequela including liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death. With successful treatment regimens available that yield a 90-100% …

Understanding habitat use by animals requires understanding the simultaneous tradeoffs between food and predation risk within a landscape. Quantifying the synergy between patches that provide quality food and those that are safe from predators at a scale relevant to a foraging animal could better reveal the parameters that influence habitat selection. To understand more thoroughly how animals select habitat components, we investigated tradeoffs between diet quality and predation risk in a species endemic to sagebrush Artemisia spp. communities in North America, the pygmy rabbitBrachylagus idahoensis. This species is a rare example of a specialist herbivore that relies almost entirely …

Background: Access to sanitation facilities is imperative in reducing the risk of multiple adverse health outcomes. A distinct disparity in sanitation exists among different wealth levels in many low-income countries, which may hinder the progress across each of the Millennium Development Goals. Methods: The surveyed households in 397 clusters from 2008-2009 Kenya Demographic and Health Surveys were divided into five wealth quintiles based on their national asset scores. A series of spatial analysis methods including excess risk, local spatial autocorrelation, and spatial interpolation were applied to observe disparities in coverage of improved sanitation among different wealth categories. The total number …
Unbuilt Anxieties: Infrastructure Projects, Transnational Conflict In The South China/East Sea, And Vietnamese Statehood, Ken Maclean
Sustainability and Social Justice
The conflicts shaping territorial claims and counter-claims to overlapping areas of the South China Sea threatens to significantly damage Sino-Vietnamese relations, destabilize regional security arrangements, and alter the geopolitical status quo. The governments of both countries routinely invoke historical documents, commission scientific studies, and cite legal principles to justify their competing claims in the maritime region and the resources contained therein. The role different types of energy infrastructure play in the state-level disputes have received little attention, however. This essay addresses this oversight. In it, I foreground the complex ways not yet built infrastructure affect Sino-Vietnamese relations as well as …

Nutrition Informatics: Information Technology Transition For Registered Dieticians, Arlanda Bell
Applied Research Projects
The passing of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) has created a growing push for healthcare organizations to no longer use paper based records and convert to an Electronic Health Record (EHR). Along with the adoption of an EHR comes a necessary change for ancillary services like nutrition and dietetic services because it affects patient care as well. In order to maintain a professional standard in patient healthcare as other health disciplines have done, the development of nutrition informatics model has become necessary. Nutrition informatics will prove to be a necessary addition to the developing …

Melatonin is a hormone rhythmically secreted at night by the pineal gland in vertebrates. In diurnal mammals, melatonin is present during the inactive phase of the rest/activity cycle, and in primates it directly facilitates sleep and decreases body temperature. However, the role of the pineal gland for the promotion of sleep at night has not yet been studied in non-primate diurnal mammalian species. Here, the authors directly examined the hypothesis that the pineal gland contributes to diurnality in Nile grass rats by decreasing activity and increasing sleep at night, and that this could occur via effects on circadian mechanisms or …

Soybean Tolerance To Soybean Aphid (Aphis Glycines Matsumura) Herbivory, Lia Marchi Werle
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This research examined the soybean aphid tolerant soybean KS4202 and its possible role in soybean aphid management. Studies documented the stage at which the tolerance response was initially expressed, quantified the relationship between cumulative aphid-days (CADs) and yield loss, and determined economic injury levels (EILs) for the soybean aphid tolerant KS4202 soybean. At high aphid infestation levels, aphids negatively impacted yield for KS4202 and K03-4686 (susceptible) plants that were infested at V1 stage; however, KS4202 expressed tolerance to the soybean aphid at low aphid infestation levels. No significant differences in the yield parameters were detected for KS4202 when infested at …
Instructional Framing And Student Learning Of Community Interactions, Nathaniel Niosco
Instructional Framing And Student Learning Of Community Interactions, Nathaniel Niosco
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Ecology is a broad field of science that encompasses many disciplines with large impacts in our society (AAAS, 2011; NRC, 2009). To understand the complex systems and concepts of this discipline requires a foundation of knowledge that students often gain in the classroom (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000). Helping students develop this foundation of knowledge requires an understanding of how they use surface and deep reasoning skills to understand and learn new material. In addition, using methods to teach students to transfer these skills between multiple contexts is key to expanding their ability to broadly apply knowledge. The purpose of …
Mechanism Of Triglyceride Lowering Action Of Akkermansia Muciniphila And Fenugreek In A Genetic Induced Hyperlipidemia, Jing Shen
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally elevated levels of lipids and/or lipoproteins in the blood circulation. It is usually accompanied with obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertension and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD) and has become a great threat to human health. New therapeutic strategies are needed for the prevention and treatment of both genetic intervention-induced hyperlipidemia and environmentally induced hyperlipidemia. In this study, we determined the therapeutic effects of a diseaseprotecting gut bacteria, Akkermansia muciniphila, and an annual legume, fenugreek, on hypertriglyceridemia induced by genetic depletion of cAMP responsive binding protein H (CREBH KO) in mice. We found …
