A Review Of Needs And Challenges Facing Unaccompanied Alien Children (Uac) Released Into U.S. Communities, Dorothy L. Mcleod Aug 2016

A Review Of Needs And Challenges Facing Unaccompanied Alien Children (Uac) Released Into U.S. Communities, Dorothy L. Mcleod

Center for the Human Rights of Children

Immigrant children (<18 years) who enter the United States alone and without legal status are defined as unaccompanied alien children (UAC ), according to United States law. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of unaccompanied immigrant children arriving at the United States-Mexico border increased dramatically, reaching a peak of over 55,000 in FY 2014. While a number of research and policy documents detail the movement of youth through the immigration system, little is known about this population after their release to sponsors in the U.S. The current research brief synthesizes the existing research using a multi-disciplinary approach. We have chosen to prioritize peer-reviewed research, but have also included information from governmental and NGO reports. Each of the following sections summarizes the research on a different aspect of youth’s postr-elease adjustment to life in the United States. We conclude the report with a list of unanswered research questions.

Design And Evaluation Of Hmp Kinase Analogs As Thiamine Pathway Inhibitors, Diego A. Lopez Aug 2016

Design And Evaluation Of Hmp Kinase Analogs As Thiamine Pathway Inhibitors, Diego A. Lopez

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Current bacterial chemotherapy faces an overwhelming reduction in efficacy due to an increase in bacterial resistance; resulting in a higher clinical demand for novel therapeutics and the investigation for their respective targets. Vitamin pathways exogenous to the human body represent an attractive target for drug development since the enzymatic machinery is solely and ubiquitously to many infectious agents. HMP kinase [E.C 2.7.1.49] is a key enzyme in the thiamine metabolism. It catalyzes two subsequent phosphorylations of 4-amino-5-hydroxymethyl-2-methylpyrimidine (HMP), making it indispensable for microbial survival. Our efforts aimed for a substrate-based approach, where over 50 HMP analogs were synthesized and assayed …

The goals were: (a) to examine middle school teachers’ and the principal’s perceptions of culturally responsive pedagogy and extent of culturally responsive teaching implemented in the school, (b) to examine how parents perceived culturally responsive caring relationships with teachers and the principal, and (c) to examine …

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2dm) Onset And "Remission"., Srikanth Tangelloju Aug 2016

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2dm) Onset And "Remission"., Srikanth Tangelloju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressive disease condition. As the disease progresses the function of beta (β) cells (cells which regulate insulin) decline, thereby increasing the circulating blood glucose levels. If left unmanaged the disease progresses from onset to development of T2DM related complications and eventually death. When managed, in certain individuals, T2DM onset can be prevented and/or slowed down and in certain T2DM individuals, remission is observed. There are some known modifiable risk factors such as diet and physical activities that are associated with the speed and direction of progression, but much is still unknown. In …

Vinyl Chloride-Diet Interactions In Liver Disease : Potential Roles Of Autophagy And Energy Management., Anna L. Lang Aug 2016

Vinyl Chloride-Diet Interactions In Liver Disease : Potential Roles Of Autophagy And Energy Management., Anna L. Lang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vinyl chloride (VC) is a prevalent environmental toxicant that has been shown to cause liver injury at high, occupational exposures. However, most studies have not addressed interactions of low doses with risk-modifying factors. This study aims to explore low-level VC metabolite exposure interactions with other potential risk-modifying factors and their effect on underlying liver disease. We examined sub-hepatotoxic effects of a VC metabolite (chloroethanol, CE) in two murine models of liver injury using ethanol and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In both, CE significantly enhanced liver injury when compared to either ethanol or LPS alone. Previous studies have shown an increase in mTOR …

Toll-Like Receptor 4 Mutation Suppresses Hyperhomocysteinemia-Mediated Hypertension., Anastasia Familtseva Aug 2016

Toll-Like Receptor 4 Mutation Suppresses Hyperhomocysteinemia-Mediated Hypertension., Anastasia Familtseva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) has been observed to promote hypertension, but the mechanisms are unclear. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4) is a cellular membrane protein that is ubiquitously expressed in all cell types of the vasculature. TLR-4 activation has been shown to promote inflammation that has been associated with pathogenesis of hypertension. In this study, we hypothesize that HHcy induces hypertension by TLR-4 activation that promotes inflammatory cytokine up-regulation (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α) and initiation of mitochondrial dysfunction leading to cell death and chronic vascular inflammation. Methods: To test this hypothesis, we used C57BL/6J mice (WT); Cystathionine-β-synthase deficient mice (CBS+/-) with genetic mild …

Rumination, Worry, And Drinking Behaviors In College Students : A Mediation Analysis., Stephanie Winkeljohn Black Aug 2016

Rumination, Worry, And Drinking Behaviors In College Students : A Mediation Analysis., Stephanie Winkeljohn Black

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mental health and alcohol-related behaviors are constructs of concern on university campuses, as a significant portion of college students experience alcohol-related consequences. There is an established link between mental health variables, including repetitive thoughts associated with depression and anxiety, and drinking behaviors among college students. However, how preventative behaviors – protective behavioral strategies – impact the associations between repetitive thoughts and drinking behaviors and outcomes is less understood. The current longitudinal study analyzed mediational relationships among these variables in college students at a mid-sized 4-year university (N = 107; 78.5% female; average age = 21.06 years, SD = 4.41). Analyses …

Development Of Terminal And Maternal Economic Selection Indices In Beefmaster Cattle, Kathleen Pearl Ochsner

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the design of economic selection indices, the relative importance of traits in the breeding objective is reflected by their relative economic weighting. The objective of this study was to develop two economic selection indices for Beefmaster cattle: one for a terminal production system and one for a maternal production system. The terminal index was developed assuming bulls are mated to mature cows with all resulting progeny harvested. The maternal index was developed assuming bulls are mated to a combination of heifers and mature cows, with resulting progeny retained as replacements or sold at weaning.

Impact Of Finishing Diets With De-Oiled Distillers Grains Or Antioxidant Containing Supplement On Beef Shelf Life, Katherine I. Domenech-Pérez Aug 2016

Impact Of Finishing Diets With De-Oiled Distillers Grains Or Antioxidant Containing Supplement On Beef Shelf Life, Katherine I. Domenech-Pérez

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In its entirety this dissertation intended to address the impact of feeding several forms of de-oiled corn distillers grains plus solubles and the effect of supplementing OmniGen-AF as a potential antioxidant source for extending beef shelf life. In study one we learned that despite the de-oiling process, greater inclusion levels (65%, DM basis) of de-oiled wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) causes an increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) similar to the levels obtained with full-fat WDGS. Lower inclusion levels (35 and 50%, DM basis) of de-oiled WDGS have intermediate PUFA content in comparison to 65% de-oiled WDGS, full-fat WDGS …

Metaplus: An R Package For The Analysis Of Robust Meta-Analysis And Meta-Regression, Ken J. Beath Aug 2016

Metaplus: An R Package For The Analysis Of Robust Meta-Analysis And Meta-Regression, Ken J. Beath

The R Journal

The metaplus package is described with examples of its use for fitting meta-analysis and meta-regression. For either meta-analysis or meta-regression it is possible to fit one of three models: standard normal random effect, t-distribution random effect or mixture of normal random effects. The latter two models allow for robustness by allowing for a random effect distribution with heavier tails than the normal distribution, and for both robust models the presence of outliers may be tested using the parametric bootstrap. For the mixture of normal random effects model the outlier studies may be identified through their posterior probability of membership in …

The Role Of Hotair In Skeletal Muscle Myogenesis, Fritzlaine Roche Aug 2016

The Role Of Hotair In Skeletal Muscle Myogenesis, Fritzlaine Roche

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

Skeletal muscle function is a vital requirement for an enriched healthy life. For years the molecular processes governing myogenesis and the development of skeletal muscle were primarily associated with proteins. In recent years, however, non-coding RNAs including microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as integral components of gene regulation that take part in cellular differentiation, development and disease. HOTAIR (HOX antisense intergenic RNA) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed from the antisense strand of the homeobox C (HOXC) gene locus present on chromosome 12. HOTAIR has been shown to have a regulatory role …

The Role Of Developmental Plasticity In Response To Salinity On The Evolution Of Alternative Reproductive Tactics In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Poeciliidae: Poecilia: Mollienesia), Kelly Elise Hogan Aug 2016

The Role Of Developmental Plasticity In Response To Salinity On The Evolution Of Alternative Reproductive Tactics In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Poeciliidae: Poecilia: Mollienesia), Kelly Elise Hogan

All Theses

Variability in life history and morphology across conspecific populations is a widespread phenomenon and may be attributed to life history trade-offs in response to environmental variation. Such trade-offs between growth, maintenance, and reproduction often occur via developmental plasticity, which allows organisms to shift their developmental trajectories to maximize fitness in a given environment. Sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna) exhibit interpopulation variation in life history and morphological traits, and inhabit springs, tidal creeks, and estuaries that range from freshwater to seawater. Male size at maturity is smaller on average in freshwater springs than in brackish water marshes where these fish are most …

Refugee Resettlement And Peacebuilding: Exploring The Roles Of Human And Social Capital Of Caseworkers In Fulfilling Grassroots Refugee Needs, Pranaya S. Rana

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

Refugee resettlement provides reintegration opportunities for refugees and paves a path for sustainable peacebuilding through refugee empowerment. Despite these benefits, the often inadequate outcomes of resettlement present challenges for both the refugees and their service providers. Refugee caseworkers must meet their clients’ needs and provide certain services to their clients within a limited time period. This makes helping refugees gain economic self-sufficiency a daunting task. Often, failure to achieve resettlement goals is attributed to the refugees for not possessing the desired skills or networks (human and social capital). This research explores how caseworkers’ characteristics such as education, experience, and specialized …

© 2016 The Authors. New Phytologist © 2016 New Phytologist Trust. Plant–microbe mutualisms can improve plant defense, but the impact of root endophytes on below-ground herbivore interactions remains unknown. We investigated the effects of the root endophyte Piriformospora indica on interactions between rice (Oryza sativa) plants and its root herbivore rice water weevil (RWW; Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus), and how plant jasmonic acid (JA) and GA regulate this tripartite interaction. Glasshouse experiments with wild-type rice and coi1-18 and Eui1-OX mutants combined with nutrient, jasmonate and gene expression analyses were used to test: whether RWW adult herbivory above ground influences subsequent damage caused …

© 2016 The Authors. The Journal of Physiology © 2016 The Physiological Society Key points: Maternal obesity reduces adipogenic progenitor density in offspring adipose tissue. The ability of adipose tissue expansion in the offspring of obese mothers is limited and is associated with metabolic dysfunction of adipose tissue when challenged with a high-fat diet. Maternal obesity induces DNA demethylation in the promoter of zinc finger protein 423, which renders progenitor cells with a high adipogenic capacity. Maternal obesity demonstrates long-term effects on the adipogenic capacity of progenitor cells in offspring adipose tissue, demonstrating a developmental programming effect. Abstract: Maternal obesity …

Western Alaska is one of largest inhabited, roadless areas in North America and, indeed, the world. Access, via a new road that would transverse Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve (GAAR), to a mining district in a vast roadless section of northwest Alaska has been proposed. Given the potential effects of the road on nearby communities, we analyzed how communities connected to the road system compare to their unconnected counterparts. Specifically, using zero inflated negative binomial models, we analyzed subsistence harvest data to understand factors that influence subsistence production at the household level. We found substantial difference in …
