Head Of Household Socioeconomic Status Effect On Dietary Intake Of Children, Samantha Ann Willcutt
Head Of Household Socioeconomic Status Effect On Dietary Intake Of Children, Samantha Ann Willcutt
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity is considered an epidemic and a precursor for many diseases. Children from lower income families are more likely to be obese, however previous studies on differences in child dietary intake based on parental income show mixed results. This study used NHANES 2005-2010 data to examine reported food consumption of children ages 6 to 11. Comparisons were made between children (n = 1433) of lower income parents (PIR <= 1.85) and children (n = 1162) of higher income parents (PIR > 1.85). Variables included total fruit and vegetable intake, total energy, food groups, oils, fiber, total sugar, added sugars and solid fats. SUDAAN was used to analyze data and differences were significant at …=>
A Novel Microextraction Method For Determining The Presence Of Pentachlorophenol In An Ongoing In-Situ Groundwater Remediation, Julianna Nicole Stratton
A Novel Microextraction Method For Determining The Presence Of Pentachlorophenol In An Ongoing In-Situ Groundwater Remediation, Julianna Nicole Stratton
Theses and Dissertations
Pentachlorophenol (penta) is a pollutant of concern worldwide. This study looks at a site that has been under remediation for the last 16 years due to penta contamination. The site has been air- and bio-sparged, phytoremediated and undergone in-situ chemical oxidation treatment in attempts to clean the ground water of penta. This thesis explores a novel microextraction method that has the promise of being more sensitive using less sample and fewer hazardous chemicals than conventional methods. Groundwater samples were extracted for phenolic compounds using a novel modified liquid microextraction protocol. Comparing our results with monitoring information from 2014, our method …
The Design Of The Mosquito And Its Dangers, Alan L. Gillen, Frank Sherwin
The Design Of The Mosquito And Its Dangers, Alan L. Gillen, Frank Sherwin
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mosquitoes (Family Culicidae) have been the scourge of mankind since the Fall. Although seemingly designed to inflict suffering and pain via rapid reproduction and formidable mouthparts, evidence mounts that this creature was not always the deadly vector it is today. Mosquitoes are currently and have always been pollinators. The majority of their lives they feed on plants, nectar, pollen, and microbes even in today's world. The Zika virus is but the latest of a significant list of pathogens spread by “the world’s most dangerous animal.” In the past, Christians have been involved in key discoveries linking mosquitoes to diseases.

Mind-Dependent Kinds, Muhammad Ali Khalidi
Mind-Dependent Kinds, Muhammad Ali Khalidi
Publications and Research
Many philosophers take mind-independence to be criterial for realism about kinds. This is problematic when it comes to psychological and social kinds, which are unavoidably mind-dependent. But reflection on the case of artificial or synthetic kinds (e.g. synthetic chemicals, genetically modified organisms) shows that the criterion of mind-independence needs to be qualified in certain ways. However, I argue that none of the usual variants on the criterion of mind-dependence is capable of distinguishing real or natural kinds from non-real kinds. Although there is a way of modifying the criterion of mind-independence in such a way as to rule in artificial …
Frailty Prevention And Treatment: Why Registered Dietitian Nutritionists Need To Take Charge, Rachel Wilkinson, Mary E. Arensberg, Mary Hickson, Johanna T. Dwyer
Frailty Prevention And Treatment: Why Registered Dietitian Nutritionists Need To Take Charge, Rachel Wilkinson, Mary E. Arensberg, Mary Hickson, Johanna T. Dwyer
School of Health Professions
Americans aged 85 years or older are the fastest growing population segment in the U.S. Many older adults have multiple chronic degenerative diseases and other illnesses. These conditions can take a toll on their ability to perform basic activities of daily living, frequently resulting in a poorer quality of life, frailty, and increased disability. Today there are no common, well-accepted guidelines for the prevention or treatment of frailty. Frailty, like obesity and diabetes, is a condition with a multiplicity of causes. Thus a multi-factorial approach—including nutrition—is needed for its prevention and treatment. Internationally, healthcare systems are establishing multidisciplinary protocols on …
Investigations Of Storage Root Development In Cassava (Manihot Esculenta Crantz), Yeetoh Chaweewan
Investigations Of Storage Root Development In Cassava (Manihot Esculenta Crantz), Yeetoh Chaweewan
Dissertations
The tropical root crop cassava is cultivated for its large starchy storage roots. Understanding critical processes in root tuberization is essential if improvement programs are to secure future yields for farmers. Studies were undertaken to identify critical components of storage root development at the anatomical and gene expression levels. Two types of roots were identified from greenhouse-grown stem cuttings: basal roots, which develop from the stem cut end and are prolific in nature, and nodal roots, which originate from the region of the buried axillary bud. Only nodal roots develop to produce storage organs. Anatomical sectioning was performed to determine …

Grade Retention And English Learners: A Literature Review And Teacher Interviews, Katie Jo Cordes
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this study was, what is the effect of retention on English language learners (ELL)? The ELL student population has increased in United States schools and in this dynamic and heterogeneous group includes students that perform lower than grade level. This capstone provides research and teacher interviews regarding the efficacy of holding back struggling English learners. Following discussion of current research and teacher opinions, the author examines the results to form implications for educators considering using grade retention with English language learners.

The Impact Of Nutrition And Physical Activity Education On The Knowledge, Attitude, And Behavior Of Muslim Youth From Various Ethnic Backgrounds, Hana L. Jaber, Zainab Rida
UCARE: Research Products
The Islamic Foundation of Lincoln is a growing population within Lincoln including many different racial backgrounds, ethnic identities, and languages. Due to these various backgrounds communication may impair the education of families as well as their attitudes and behaviors. Although there are programs developed for many other minority groups, the Muslim (population comprising the Islamic Foundation of Lincoln) population does not have any data obtained from the community in terms of nutrition and physical activity behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge. This study seeks to understand if there are barriers to communication and if the intervention enhanced nutrition knowledge. This poster reflects …

Many plant tissues contain plant secondary compounds (PSC), which have long been recognised as defensive chemicals that deter herbivory via their toxic effects. However, herbivores may also benefit from including PSC into their diets. Plant-derived phenolics, terpenes and alkaloids have antiparasitic properties and sesquiterpene lactones have antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic properties. These actions are in part a consequence of the negative actions that PSC exert across several trophic levels, including the bacteria, parasites and fungi that inhabit herbivores’ bodies. Given the dual action, toxin and medicine, it is possible to hypothesise that self-selection of PSC by herbivores should occur when …

Low-Cost Compact Diffuse Speckle Contrast Flowmeter Using Small Laser Diode And Bare Charge-Coupled-Device, Chong Huang, Myeongsu Seong, Joshua Paul Morgan, Siavash Mazdeyasna, Jae Gwan Kim, Jeffrey Todd Hastings, Guoqiang Yu
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
We report a low-cost compact diffuse speckle contrast flowmeter (DSCF) consisting of a small laser diode and a bare charge-coupled-device (CCD) chip, which can be used for contact measurements of blood flow variations in relatively deep tissues (up to ∼8 mm). Measurements of large flow variations by the contact DSCF probe are compared to a noncontact CCD-based diffuse speckle contrast spectroscopy and a standard contact diffuse correlation spectroscopy in tissue phantoms and a human forearm. Bland–Altman analysis shows no significant bias with good limits of agreement among these measurements: 96.5% ± 2.2% (94.4% to 100.0%) in phantom experiments and 92.8% …

Ex-Post Livestock Diseases, And Pastoralists' Averting Decisions In Tanzania, Mazbahul Ahamad
Ex-Post Livestock Diseases, And Pastoralists' Averting Decisions In Tanzania, Mazbahul Ahamad
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Little is known about the factors affecting pastoralists’ livestock vaccination decisions. In this thesis, we use a novel survey-based dataset on pastoralists living in the Ruaha landscape in Tanzania, and employ several econometric approaches to identify the factors affecting pastoralists’ decision-making process about livestock vaccination when disease occurrence and severity, vaccination and healthcare access costs and other related variables are known. Results from binary choice models that account for excess zeros indicate that socially and economically active households are more likely to vaccinate their livestock. The results also identify positive marginal effects of illness incidence and having wage earners and …
Relationship Of Perceived Thirst To Measures Of Hydration During And Following Exercise, Lesley W. Vandermark
Relationship Of Perceived Thirst To Measures Of Hydration During And Following Exercise, Lesley W. Vandermark
Doctoral Dissertations
The purposes of these investigations were to describe the relationship of thirst to hydration during exercise, and to determine the impact of fluid volume on thirst following exercise. Eleven males completed four treadmill exercise trials of up to 180 minutes in a warm environment (35°C, 30% RH), then a 1-hour seated recovery. Two trials began euhydrated, and two hypohydrated. Fluid was given in one trial during exercise to match sweat rate. During recovery, participants were grouped to receive either a Small (1% of body mass (BM)) or Large (4% of BM) fluid bolus. Immediately post-exercise (IPE), there was a relationship …

An Introduction To Nutrition For An Optometrist, Nl Szostek, H Buckhurst, P Buckhurst, C Purslow, A Collinson
School of Health Professions
The world of nutrition and nutritional supplements can sometimes be a minefield for both patients and optometrists. Whilst there is no formal training in this area for undergraduate optometrists, as primary healthcare professionals there is an existing duty to be able to advise patients on products which may help maintain the health of their eyes and vision (General Optical Council 2016). This article provides a basic introduction to health and nutrition, specifically with the optometrist in mind. Firstly, it explores what a healthy diet is and defines some commonly used terms; then it will go on to the role of …
