Camp Paws: A Positive Alternative To Suspensions In Early Elementary, Julie Boyd Dec 2016

Camp Paws: A Positive Alternative To Suspensions In Early Elementary, Julie Boyd

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Our schools report increasingly extreme and problematic behavior in our earliest grades. As early school expectations increase and teacher pressure mounts we are often at a loss when students enter school without basic social, emotional, and behavioral school readiness skills. Schools had the sole option of within-classroom interventions that often left the teacher and student frustrated and frequently resulted in suspensions. Further, some children prefer to be sent home, causing them to increase and escalate their problematic behavior on a regular basis. Appropriate school behavior is impossible to teach if the student is not in school!

These extreme behavior problems …

Gender Bias And Organ Transplantation In Nepal, Sarah Rasmussen, Pragya Paneru, Kalpana Shrestha, Pukar C. Shrestha Dec 2016

Gender Bias And Organ Transplantation In Nepal, Sarah Rasmussen, Pragya Paneru, Kalpana Shrestha, Pukar C. Shrestha

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Women in Nepal are less likely to receive proper, high quality medical care than their male relatives. Live-donor kidney transplantation provides a compelling example of such disparities, as 84% of recipients are male, 75% of donors are female and most kidneys are transferred from mother to son and from wife to husband. In the case of transplantation, women are not just denied healthcare, they are also responsible for the health of their male kin. Based on semi-structured ethnographic interviews with transplant patients, organ donors, dialysis patients and relatives, this paper elaborates on the social and economic factors that have created …

Characterizing Egg Quality And Larval Performance From Captive Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus) Spawns Over Time, Steven J. Kloeblen

Open Access Theses

Mahi-mahi Coryphaena hippurus, a high performance pelagic species, is a promising species for aquaculture development and has been used as a model species for oil toxicology and physiology studies. This species has one of the fastest growth rates of any marine teleost and a unique reproductive biology due to the species high spawning frequency and energy allocation into spawning events. These characteristics lend the species to being an excellent model for understanding broodstock nutrition for other high energetic pelagic species in captivity. The reproductive performance of wild-caught mahi-mahi was investigated in this study. Egg morphometries and larval survival were tracked …

Influence Of Cattle On Browsing And Grazing Wildlife Varies With Rainfall And Presence Of Megaherbivores, Duncan M. Kimuyu, Kari E. Veblen, Corinna Riginos, Robert M. Chira, John M. Githaiga, Truman P. Young

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

In many savanna ecosystems worldwide, livestock share the landscape and its resources with wildlife. The nature of interactions between livestock and wildlife is a subject of considerable interest and speculation, yet little controlled experimental research has been carried out. Since 1995, we have been manipulating the presence and absence of cattle and large mammalian herbivore wildlife in a Kenyan savanna in order to better understand how different herbivore guilds influence habitat use by specific wildlife species. Using dung counts as a relative assay of herbivore use of the different experimental plots, we found that cattle had a range of effects, …

Using Gis To Predict Cetacean Strandings Related To Harmful Algal Blooms, Jessica L. Boyd

HCNSO Student Capstones

Exposure to harmful algal bloom (HAB) toxins, such as Karenia brevis, has been linked to cetacean strandings and mortalities. Biological and environmental data from a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Unusual Mortality Event (UME) in 2004 are compared to those from pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) mass stranding events in 2013-2014 in western Florida. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) maps have been created by overlaying stranding locations and select K. brevis presence data in order to identify common spatial and temporal trends. Preliminary results indicate that elevated K. brevis levels (>10,000 cells/L) in Sarasota Bay during January-February and November may …

Background

Few studies have directly compared dental procedures provided in public and private insurance plans for enrollees living in dental health professional shortage areas (DHPSAs). We examined the rates for the different types of dental procedures received by 0–18-year-old children living in DHPSAs and non-DHPSAs who were enrolled in Medicaid and those enrolled under Delta Dental of Wisconsin (DDW) for years 2002 to 2008.

Methods

Medicaid and DDW dental claims data for 2002 to 2008 was analyzed. Enrollees were divided into DDW-DHPSA and non-DHPSA and Medicaid-DHPSA and non-DHPSA groups. Descriptive and multivariable analyses using over-dispersed Poisson regression were performed to …

Patient Falls: Reducing Patient Falls With Injury, Frederick Comer Dec 2016

Patient Falls: Reducing Patient Falls With Injury, Frederick Comer

Master's Projects

The occurrence of patient falls is a very important health concern facing the healthcare industry. Many patients not only experience falls, but have falls with an injury. This is a patient safety concern that can have serious effects on patient outcomes, is a leading cause of patient injuries in hospitals, and are costly adverse events (Trepanier & Hilsenbeck, 2014). It is important that healthcare professionals determine ways to prevent what has been deemed a preventable event (Bemis-Dougherty & Delaune, 2008). In 2005 The Joint Commission (TJC) included patient falls with injury as part of their National Patient Safety Goals (Bemis-Dougherty …

Evaluation Of Urea Hydrolysis As A Biomarker For Detecting Pathogenic Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Clinical Isolates And Raw Oysters, Maryam Kate Mohammadi-Aragh Dec 2016

Evaluation Of Urea Hydrolysis As A Biomarker For Detecting Pathogenic Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Clinical Isolates And Raw Oysters, Maryam Kate Mohammadi-Aragh

Theses and Dissertations

Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) infection is commonly caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish. Raw oysters are associated with most Vp outbreaks. Pathogenic Vp express thermostable-direct hemolysin (tdh) and to some extent thermostable-related hemolysin (trh). Additionally, some pathogenic Vp express urease (uh). The objectives of this work were to discern any relationships between urease (uh) expression, tdh/trh expression, and hemolytic activity in pathogenic and non-pathogenic clinical strains, and to compare urease, motility, tdh/trh expression, and hemolytic activity in raw oyster isolates. This information would determine if urease could be used as a biomarker to detect pathogenic Vp. About 80% …

Utilization Of Phosphate Alternatives In Chunked And Formed Deli Ham And Marinated Chicken Breast, Carlos Seth Morris Dec 2016

Utilization Of Phosphate Alternatives In Chunked And Formed Deli Ham And Marinated Chicken Breast, Carlos Seth Morris

Theses and Dissertations

Porcine Semimembranosus muscles were vacuum tumbled with phosphate, without phosphate, fiber dry vinegar, or whey protein concentrate (WPC). Consumers preferred (P<0.05) deli ham with phosphate, without phosphate and WPC over the oat fiber with vinegar treatment. In addition, the phosphate treatment had less cooking loss, (P<0.05) greater bind strength (P<0.05) and more intact slices (P<0.05) than other treatments. In addition, WPC produced ham with a higher (P<0.05) CIE l* and a lower (P<0.05) b* value than other treatments. Consumers preferred (P<0.05) chicken breasts marinated with phosphate with respect to flavor and aroma over the negative phosphate treatment and oat fiber treatments. Chicken breast with phosphate increased pH and had less cooking loss (P<0.05) as compared to chicken with WPC and without phosphate. Results indicated that oat fiber has potential as a phosphate replacer in marinated chicken, and WPC has potential as a phosphate replacer in deli ham.

Identification And Genetic Characterization Of Antimicrobial Activities Of Pseudomonas Mississippiensis, A Novel Bacterial Species Isolated From Soybean Rhizosphere, Jiayuan Jia

Theses and Dissertations

An aerobic, Gram-negative, rod shaped and polarlagellated bacterium, designated strain MS586, was isolated from soybean rhizosphere in Mississippi. The taxonomic position of MS586 was determined using a polyphasic approach. Analysis of the housekeeping genes supported the novel position of MS586. The results were also supported by average nucleotide identity (ANI) values. Based on these data, it is proposed that strain MS586 represents a novel species, Pseudomonas mississippiensis, within the genus Pseudomonas. The type strain is MS586. Strain MS586 showed a broad-spectrum of antimicrobial activity against plant pathogenic bacteria and fungi that are economically important in agriculture. Preliminary studies using transposon-based …

A Study Of Wheat Flour Tortillas, Combustion, Selected Gaseous And Nuclear Surrogate Samples Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs), Charles Tarshi Ghany

Theses and Dissertations

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an efficient tool for identification of elemental composition and characterization of materials. The concept of this technique is to focus a laser pulse of sufficiently high power on to a sample to create a plasma plume of atoms, ions, and molecules. The measurement of the resulting optical emission from these species provides the basis of the spectral analysis. Spectroscopic analysis of the plasma generated by Nd:YAG laser irradiation of wheat flour tortillas was carried out. A careful selection of spectral lines of Ca, Na and K which do not suffer from spectral interference was made. …

Our results showed that catfish frame had higher protein yield and color similarity with commercial products than the head; AE-FPI had higher yield and gel strength than SE-FPI; SDS-PAGE protein patterns of FPI from catfish frame by SE method was comparable with commercial surimi products. Based on the results, further optimization of the recovery yield …

Governing The Rurals: Food Security And Governance In The 21st Century, Gina Paola Rico Mendez Dec 2016

Governing The Rurals: Food Security And Governance In The 21st Century, Gina Paola Rico Mendez

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops a theory about the consolidation of state legitimacy given transformations in food security. Food security has moved from a national food maximization effort to the provision of food to households and individuals, regardless of the production source. This definitional change was triggered by urbanization, industrialization of agriculture and liberalization of trade. These dynamics altered the formula for balance and control of a country’s territory; as agricultural output moved into a global context, urban centers became less reliant on its periphery for sustenance and thus governments have fewer incentives to provide governance of any quality to rural areas. …

Nitrogen And Potassium Management In Container Production Of Musa, Ensete, And Canna And Landscape Performance Of Musa, Ensete, And Musella, Maddox Martin Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Two container production studies (nursery area and greenhouse) and a landscape performance study to evaluate bananas and cannas were performed at R. R. Foil Plant Science Research Center on the campus of Mississippi State University. Previous reports determined that there is greater need of K2O fertilization in addition to N for tropical monocot nutrition. Contradictory to previous cultural recommendations for landscapes, it was determined that a N:K2O ratio is not significant for container production of Musa, Ensete, and Canna in pine bark substrate. Nitrogen rate was the most significant variable in the containerized production of Musa, Ensete, and Canna. The …

Role Of Selenium In Age-Related Degeneration: Selenotranscriptome Hierarchy And Characterization Of Selenoprotein H, Lei Cao

Theses and Dissertations

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element exerting its biological functions mainly through selenoproteins. Our lab has recently shown a paradoxical role of dietary Se at nutritional levels of intake in the delay of age-related degeneration while reducing longevity in mice carrying humanized telomeres. The first aim of this dissertation was to evaluate the effects of long-term dietary Se deficiency, aging, and sex on selenotranscriptome hierarchy in tissues. Four unique patterns in selenotranscriptomic changes were summarized. First, the responses of selenotranscriptomes to dietary Se deprivation and aging were sexually dimorphic. Second, a few selenoproteins responded to dietary Se deficiency and …

The Effects Of Sub-Lethal Chlorine Induced Oxidative Stress On Biofilm Formation And Thermal Resistance Of Salmonella, Janak Dhakal Dec 2016

The Effects Of Sub-Lethal Chlorine Induced Oxidative Stress On Biofilm Formation And Thermal Resistance Of Salmonella, Janak Dhakal

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of sub-lethal chlorine stress on various strains/serotypes of Salmonella on biofilm formation and thermal resistance was studied. The effect of oxidative stress (induced by 150 ppm of chlorine in TSB) on Salmonella biofilm formation on polystyrene and stainless steel surfaces at three temperatures (4°C, 30°C, and room temperature) in nutrient rich (full strength TSB) and nutrient limited conditions (1/10th TSB) was evaluated. On polystyrene surface, chlorine stressed S. Heidelberg (strain ID 72), S. Newport (strain ID 107) and S. Typhimurium (ATCC 14028) formed stronger (P < 0.05) biofilms at 30°C. On stainless steel, the chlorine stressed S. Heidelberg (ATCC 8326) and S. Enteritidis (ATCC 4931) at room temperature formed stronger (P < 0.05) biofilms as compared to the non-stressed control cells. The thermal resistance of short-term (1h) and long-term (27d) chlorine stressed Salmonella Heidelberg and S. Typhimurium were compared with the non-stressed controls at three different temperatures (55°C, 58°C and 61°C) and two growth phases (logarithmic and stationary). The short-term stressed log phase cells (both serotypes) were found to be more sensitive (P< 0.05) to thermal inactivation in TSB. Upon long-term sub-lethal chlorine exposure, Salmonella developed a rugose morphotype on tryptic soy agar at 37°C. The rugose morphotype provided significant thermal protection (P< 0.05) against heat stress as compared to smooth morphotype. In chicken broth, at 55°C, short-term chlorine stressed stationary phase S. Typhimurium displayed a higher D55 value compared to non-stressed cells. The findings from this research reveal that some Salmonella strains have the potential to form stronger biofilms and exhibit higher thermal tolerance upon exposure to sub-lethal chlorine concentration.

Understanding The Exotic Distributions Of Invasive Species, Tyler Evan Schartel Dec 2016

Understanding The Exotic Distributions Of Invasive Species, Tyler Evan Schartel

Theses and Dissertations

Invasive species are organisms whose introduction and spread in exotic ranges result in a multitude of ecological impacts. Understanding the factors that constrain the exotic distributions of invasive species is of considerable interest. Biotic associations formed with taxa in the invaded community may be particularly important in shaping invader distributions. These associations emerge from interactions between the traits of the invasive species and some subset of the traits present in the invaded community. Focusing on how organism traits influence the outcomes of biotic interactions may inform predictions of invader distributions. This kind of trait-based approach may be most easily applied …
