Falls Program On An Acute Psychiatric Unit, Joseph Hunter Rose
Falls Program On An Acute Psychiatric Unit, Joseph Hunter Rose
Master's Projects and Capstones
In the metropolitan hospital’s acute psychiatric unit there has been an increase in falls incidence as well as need for evaluation of the effectiveness of Schmid Fall Risk Assessment tool in its ability to properly identify those at risk. In the last fiscal year there were 45 falls among 28 patients on the acute psychiatric unit.Falls are harmful to the patients and can cause prolonged hospital stays with non-reimbursable costs to the hospital. Falls amongst psychiatric patients is an even greater challenge to address due to the nature of the mental health disease process. This project addresses general costs of …
Biblical Foundations For Nutrition And An Abundant Life, Elizabeth Snyder, M.A.
Biblical Foundations For Nutrition And An Abundant Life, Elizabeth Snyder, M.A.
The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning
The purpose of this paper is to look at what the Bible says about the significance of nutrition, its effect on health, and the benefits of a Christian-worldview on nutritional wellbeing. With the help of the Holy Spirit, nutrition teachers need to connect the science with the Biblical foundation God has given us in His word. While it is crucial to remember that salvation is through Christ alone, it is wise to recognize the connection between diet and frontal lobe function, where analytical, moral decisions are made. Studying and understanding what the Bible says about the original diet, clean vs. …

Building Biblically Founded Faith And Values Through A Campus-Wide Healthy Lifestyle Project, Holly Gadd, Ph.D., Lillian Tryon, D.N.P.
The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning
Essential to Seventh-day Adventist education is the development and strengthening of a biblically founded faith as a result of the student’s program of study and extracurricular activities. Much of Jesus’ ministry involved teaching. The goal of His teaching was to clearly reveal God’s love to a fallen world (John 17:6, 23 New International Version). At the end of His ministry, Jesus commissioned His followers to “preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15) and to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). As Seventh-day Adventist educators, we are commissioned by God to help our students reach not just career goals, but goals set …

Chapter 9: Biomechanics, Nicholas Stergiou, Daniel Blanke, Sara A. Myers, Ka-Chun Siu
Journal Articles
Biomechanics is a discipline. A discipline deals with understanding, predicting, and explaining phenomena within a content domain, and biomechanics is the study of the human body in motion. By applying
principles from mechanics and engineering, biomechanists are able to study the forces that act on the body and the effects they produce (Bates, 1991). Hay (1973) describes biomechanics as the science that examines forces acting on and within a biological structure and the effects produced by such forces, whereas Alt (1967) describes biomechanics as the science that investigates the effect of internal and external forces on human and animal bodies …

Gwu Psychology Professor Offers Information On Holiday Stress & Anxiety, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Getting stuck in traffic, helping little kids get ready for school, or managing family conflicts are daily tasks that can sometimes cause even the toughest of people to feel stressed out—particularly during the holiday season when demands on time or finances increase. Dr. Sharon Webb, assistant professor of psychology and counseling at Gardner-Webb University, says there are many psychological and physiological symptoms that people experience when they go through something they perceive as stressful. “Perception is probably the key word, because often stress is experienced through many different kinds of events we encounter,” Webb stated.

Precision Study Of Stochastic Predictors For Dxa Scans, Raul Ramos
Precision Study Of Stochastic Predictors For Dxa Scans, Raul Ramos
Health and Kinesiology Theses
In this study, the in vivo reproducibility of stochastic predictors and BMD values from Dual- Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) were assessed at two different anatomic sites: hip and spine. Measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) derived from DXA has been widely used as a diagnostic tool for osteoporosis. BMD has been used as a representative value for bone strength and fracture risk, but only represents a part of both. In order to better understand fracture risk, the use of grayscale images from DXA scans has been implemented in enhancing the prediction of bone strength and fracture risk. The use of …

Effect Of Maternal Age On Recombination Rate In Drosophila Melanogaster, Christopher Schimmoeller
Effect Of Maternal Age On Recombination Rate In Drosophila Melanogaster, Christopher Schimmoeller
Honors Projects
Recombination is vital because it adds genetic diversity to a species and has the potential to influence fitness, the relative reproductive success of an organism in passing genes to the next generation (Roeder, 1997). Multiple aspects of recombination have been studied, including its mechanisms of production and the role of recombination events in evolution (Hudson & Kaplan, 1985). In this study we examined how maternal age affects the rate of recombination. Our hypothesis states that recombination rate is positively correlated with maternal age. If this is true we would expect to see recombination rate, in progeny, increase as the parental …
Tracking The Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) Corridor And The Human-Wildlife Conflict In Selela Village, Nicole Chlebek, Laura Stalter
Tracking The Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) Corridor And The Human-Wildlife Conflict In Selela Village, Nicole Chlebek, Laura Stalter
CrissCross
The beastly journey of long-distance migration for the African Elephant (Lexodonta Africana) is important for upholding their connections between diminishing protected areas, especially in northeastern Tanzania. However, human development is encroaching into these corridors, creating a human-elephant conflict, which can ruin livelihoods of villagers, depending on the extent of conflict. This study focused on exploring the hypothesized human-elephant conflict on the Selela corridor, specifically in Selela village, as well as GPS (Global Positioning System) mapping evidence of elephant travel along the projected Selela elephant corridor connecting Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), to Selela Forest Reserve (SFR), and finally to …

Characterizing The Function Of Amino Acid Transporter Acypi008971 In The Pea Aphid/Buchnera Symbiosis, Yu-Ching Hsu
Open Access Theses
Sap-feeding insect have associated with bacterial symbionts for hundreds of millions years. These symbioses have increased insect fitness, facilitating their persistence through evolutionary time. The symbionts of sap-feeding insects provide their hosts with amino acids that are found at very low concentrations in their diets. Typically amino acid metabolism is partitioned between host and symbiont so that the host synthesizes non-essential amino acids while the symbiont contributes essential amino acids. The biosynthesis of some amino acids however, requires enzymes encoded by both the host and the symbiont. Understanding how amino acid metabolism is integrated between insect host and bacterial symbiont …

Color-Mediated Foraging By Pollinators: A Comparative Study Of Two Passionflower Butterflies At Lantana Camara, Gyanpriya Maharaj
Dissertations
Colorful floral signaling and resulting insect foraging behaviors have only been extensively examined in hymenopteran pollinators, especially bees, in comparison to flies, beetles, and butterflies regardless of their ecological importance. Therefore, my study provides novel information by focusing on foraging behaviors of adult passionflower butterflies, Heliconius melpomene and Dryas iulia, to the color changing flowers of Lantana camara. My dissertation which is divided into four chapters, aims to explore various aspects of color mediate foraging in passionflower butterflies by combining observations in the wild with controlled field and laboratory experiments. In the first chapter I reviewed flower color development and …

Background: Chronic low-grade inflammation reflects a subclinical immune response implicated in the pathogenesis of complex diseases. Identifying genetic loci where DNA methylation is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation may reveal novel pathways or therapeutic targets for inflammation.
Results: We performed a meta-analysis of epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), which is a sensitive marker of low-grade inflammation, in a large European population (n = 8863) and trans-ethnic replication in African Americans (n = 4111). We found differential methylation at 218 CpG sites to be associated with CRP (P < 1.15 × 10–7) in the discovery panel …

ABSTRACT Purpose The uptake of smoking by youth under the age of 18 increases the likelihood that they will become lifetime smokers. The CDC recommends best practices regarding tobacco prevention. Among them are Community Policies for tobacco-free zones, community initiatives, anti-tobacco media campaigns, and access to quit-smoking resources. The last of these best practices is a recommendation to provide education in the schools. The subject of this research was the implementation of an in-school tobacco curriculum based on Media Literacy, which provides youth the ability to critically evaluate media messages that equate the “cool” smoking habit with beauty, confidence and …

Diseases such as periodontal disease, chronic inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune disease are reported to be associated with changes in the bacteria populations in specific locations of the body, particularly the gastrointestinal tract and the oral cavity. Because oral and gastrointestinal microbiomes do not typically invade tissues in the host with chronic inflammatory disease, considerable work has instead focused on virulence factors produced by these organisms and their role in triggering innate immune responses that may promote chronic inflammatory diseases. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are innate immune receptors that recognize specific structural moieties shared among microbes of different classes. My work …

Behavioural Mhealth In Developing Countries: What About Culture? / Andre Matthias Müller, A.M. Müller
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Behavioural health in many developing countries (Lachat et al., 2013) one could suggest to simply make use of infrastructure that is already available – the mobile technology infrastructure. This seems sensible considering that modern mobile technology has reached almost every person on our planet. Additionally, the digital divide between developed and developing countries is closing and in 2016 95% of the global population has access to a mobile phone network while the number of mobile broadband subscriptions grows rapidly especially in developing countries (International Telecommunication Union, 2016). Mobile technology ownership is also not limited to any specific demographic because it …
