Scanning Probe Investigations Of Multidentate Thiol And Spatially Confined Porphyrin Nanoassemblies Using Nanoscale Lithography, Xianglin Zhai Zhai
Scanning Probe Investigations Of Multidentate Thiol And Spatially Confined Porphyrin Nanoassemblies Using Nanoscale Lithography, Xianglin Zhai Zhai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Approaches to prepare spatially selective surfaces were developed in this dissertation for constructing nanopatterns of organic thin film materials. Nanoscale surface patterns were prepared using immersion particle lithography and scanning probe lithography combined with organothiol chemistry. Organic thin films and nanomaterials can be patterned with tunable periodicities and designed shapes by selecting the diameter of mesospheres used as surface masks or scanning probe lithography, respectively. The surface platforms of well-defined nanopatterns are ideal for high resolution investigations using scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Local measurements of surface properties and conductive properties combined with nanolithography were accomplished at the molecular level. Sample …
Arsenic Speciation And Phytoremediation Modeling For Environmental Management, Sidney Joseph Marlborough
Arsenic Speciation And Phytoremediation Modeling For Environmental Management, Sidney Joseph Marlborough
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Arsenic has been used throughout recorded history but during the industrial revolution widespread use led to global environmental impact. The two forms that should be considered in environment management are arsenate and arsenite. The calculations of environmental risk for arsenic exposure relies the toxicity of arsenite however, in well aeriated surface soils arsenate may be the predominate form. Ecological risk assessments based on arsenite studies will lead to restrictive remediation requirements that do not adequately reflect the level of risk. Arsenate resembles phosphate and as such has a greater affinity for phytoremediation. Phytoremediation is one of the most viable and …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Procedural Fairness Perceptions In Personnel Selection: A Three-Year Longitudinal Study, Udo Konradt, Yvonne Garbers, Martina Böge, Berrin Erdogan, Talya N. Bauer
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Drawing on Gilliland’s (1993) selection fairness framework, we examined antecedents and behavioral effects of applicant procedural fairness perceptions before, during, and after a personnel selection procedure using a six-wave longitudinal research design. Results showed that both perceived post-test fairness and pre-feedback fairness perceptions are related to job offer acceptance and job performance after 18 months, but not to job performance after 36 months. Pre-test and post-test procedural fairness perceptions were mainly related to formal characteristics and interpersonal treatment, whereas pre-feedback fairness perceptions were related to formal characteristics and explanations. The impact of fairness attributes of formal characteristics and interpersonal treatment …
Synthetic Approach Towards P3eht-B-Pss Conjugated And Ionic Block Copolymer, Zhaoyuan Liu
Synthetic Approach Towards P3eht-B-Pss Conjugated And Ionic Block Copolymer, Zhaoyuan Liu
LSU Master's Theses
This work is focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of block copolymers (BCPs) containing both conjugated and polyelectrolyte blocks. This type of rod-coil BCP is considered to have microphase separation which is different compared to coil-coil BCPs. The conjugated block used for studies is regioregular poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3AT), which can be synthesized by Grignard metathesis (GRIM) polymerization. The polyelectrolyte block used is polystyrene sulfonate with well-defined structure, which can be synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Chapter II is focused on evaluation of synthetic routes for P3EHT-b-PSS, including using bifunctional initiator to synthesize both blocks, and separately synthesizing end-functionalized …

Friends Of The Children: Strategies For Scaling Impact, Jacen Greene, Nicki Yechin Lee, Eric Nelsen
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Friends of the Children, a nonprofit organization in Portland, Oregon, was founded in 1993 by retired entrepreneur Duncan Campbell to serve youth at the highest risk of teen parenting, incarceration, or dropping out of school. Each youth client was matched with a paid mentor from first grade through the end of high school. The costs of this intervention were high, but the outcomes were extremely impressive in each of the three risk areas. The total benefits to society of Friends of the Children’s intervention was estimated at $7 for every $1 spent on the program.

The Impact Of Weight Bias On Psychological Functioning: The Role Of Weight Discrimination And Internalized Weight Bias, Krystal Marie Waldo
The Impact Of Weight Bias On Psychological Functioning: The Role Of Weight Discrimination And Internalized Weight Bias, Krystal Marie Waldo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Obesity rates in the United States (U.S.) continue to rise with approximately 34.9% of adults considered obese and an additional 34% that are overweight. With the increased prevalence of obesity, there has also been a rise in weight-based discrimination and weight bias in the U.S. The present study examined the association between body mass index (BMI) and psychological functioning, and whether internalized weight bias and weight-based stigmatizing experiences moderated this relationship. In addition, the present study examined if weight bias internalization mediated the relationship between weight-based stigmatizing experiences and psychological functioning. Non-treatment seeking overweight and obese participants (N = 112) …

Cardiovascular And Autonomic Nervous System Function: Impact Of Glucose Ingestion, Hydration Status And Exercise In Heated Environments, Kate Suzanne Early
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Cardiovascular function is under the influence of autonomic nervous system, both of which can be assessed non-invasively. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine these non-invasive markers of cardiovascular and autonomic function and their relationships with exercise training, glucose ingestion and hydration status. A series of three studies were conducted to gain insight to various influences on cardiovascular and autonomic function. The first study examined the influence of exercise training of brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD) using meta-analytic techniques. Sixty-six studies included in the analysis demonstrated exercise training improves BAFMD compared to controls. Results indicated exercise training significantly alters …
Biomedical Applications Of Thiol-Acrylate Polymers, Leah Alyce Garber
Biomedical Applications Of Thiol-Acrylate Polymers, Leah Alyce Garber
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The development of biocompatible polymers using thiol-acrylate Michael addition reactions between not only acrylates and thiols but also between amines and acrylates were demonstrated. The synthesis of an in situ tertiary amine catalyst initiates the propagation steps of the polymerization process by subsequently reacting with trimethylolpropane tris (3-mercaptopropionate) (TMPTMP). A few notable characteristics of this reaction are tunable gel times, the capability of reaching high polymer conversion and suitable mechanical strength. With addition of hydroxyapatite to the polymeric phase and foaming, a porous bone composite was produced. Further osteogenisis and in vivo work using the PETA-co-TMPTMP (HA) composite material was …
Role Of Histone H4 Mutations In Dna Repair Pathways, Sheikh Arafatur Rahman
Role Of Histone H4 Mutations In Dna Repair Pathways, Sheikh Arafatur Rahman
LSU Master's Theses
Histone H3K79 methylation has been shown to play roles in different DNA repair pathways. Histone H4 residues serine 64 to threonine 80 surround histone H3K79 residue. We have analyzed the effect of the mutations of the residues on UV sensitivity, H3K79 methylation, nucleotide excision repair, chromatin state and homologous recombination. We found that mutation of the residues 64 to 72 cause resistance to killing by UV whereas mutation of the residues 73 to 80 cause sensitivity to killing by UV compared to wild type. In general, we found that the mutations make nucleotide excision repair more proficient at the constitutively …
Violent Conventions: An Analysis Of The Unintended Aesthetics Of On-Stage Accidents, Jeremy Matthew Reynolds
Violent Conventions: An Analysis Of The Unintended Aesthetics Of On-Stage Accidents, Jeremy Matthew Reynolds
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In theatre scholarship, the event of the on-stage accident is a fairly neglected area of research. Aside from brief archival detailing of some of the more tragic events, scholars have not approached the accidents from a theoretical or historiographical position. Many, I surmise, find little of interest in an on-stage accident due to its lack of aesthetic purpose or intentionality. In this project, I focus on those neglected accidents and, more specifically, accidents that take place due to a violent failure of theatrical convention. I discuss three specific moments where a theatre convention – established to concretize the world of …

Characterization Of Rickettsial Infection Dynamics Within Dermacentor Variabilis And Amblyomma Maculatum, Emma Kate Harris
Characterization Of Rickettsial Infection Dynamics Within Dermacentor Variabilis And Amblyomma Maculatum, Emma Kate Harris
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are primarily associated with their reservoir host and vector, the tick. Rickettsial colonization and maintenance within the arthropod is a key component of vector competence and pathogen transmission to the mammalian host. Contemporary detection of novel tick hosts for rickettsial species, combined with an unprecedented rise in human cases of SFG rickettsiosis, necessitates a deeper understanding of tick/Rickettsia interactions. The hypothesis for this work is that if primary tick/Rickettsia pairings do not exist then rickettsial determinants account for primary vector/pathogen relationships. To this end, Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma maculatum ticks were exposed to R. rickettsii, …
Peg3 Functions As A Repressor For Its Downstream Genes, An Ye
Peg3 Functions As A Repressor For Its Downstream Genes, An Ye
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Paternally expressed gene 3 (Peg3) is an imprinted gene that encodes a protein with twelve C2H2 zinc finger domains. Thus, PEG3 protein is predicted to serve as a transcription factor that may regulate other gene expression. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) experiment revealed a list of genes that are bound by PEG3, supporting PEG3 is a DNA-binding protein. Genome wide expression analysis using wild type and Peg3 knockout mouse models further suggested that a large number of genes were up-regulated in Peg3 knockout model, including imprinted genes and some tissue-specific genes, suggesting that PEG3 may mainly function as a repressor for its …
Professional Wrestling: Local Performance History, Global Performance Praxis, Neal Anderson Hebert
Professional Wrestling: Local Performance History, Global Performance Praxis, Neal Anderson Hebert
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Professional Wrestling: Local Performance History, Global Performance Praxis, is a work of interdisciplinary scholarship (combining elements of theatre history, performance studies, and philosophy) that addresses an area of performance currently under-researched within the liberal arts and humanities: professional wrestling. My dissertation directs much-needed attention to the fact that professional wrestling is the only kind of live drama many Americans ever see (or even want to see). Although it is no doubt easy for theatre historians and performance theorists to dismiss this performance practice because of its location somewhere between “illegitimate sport” and “lowbrow popular entertainment,” I contend that United States …
Efficacy And Feasibility Of Alginate Bait For The Louisiana Commercial Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Fishery, Elizabeth Lorraine Clowes
Efficacy And Feasibility Of Alginate Bait For The Louisiana Commercial Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Fishery, Elizabeth Lorraine Clowes
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana leads all U.S. states in blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) landings, but high fuel and bait costs have hindered commercial fishing productivity of Louisiana in recent years. The primary baitfish, Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), has steadily increased in price and decreased in availability, while crab prices remain low. To reduce costs for fishermen, an alternative bait was developed that incorporates shrimp waste into a semi-rigid alginate matrix. Lab testing and preliminary field tests show that shrimp-alginate bait may be a suitable alternative to menhaden for Louisiana crab fishermen. I evaluated bait performance by conducting field sampling to compare catch rates …
Microfluidic Device For Motility And Osmolality Analysis Of Zebrafish Sperm, Jacob Ethan Beckham
Microfluidic Device For Motility And Osmolality Analysis Of Zebrafish Sperm, Jacob Ethan Beckham
LSU Master's Theses
An increasing number of laboratories are evaluating sample quality via motility analysis by means of computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) after sperm activation by manual dilution and mixing. Even with the use of CASA, due to user variation, there is a lack of control over the activation process, resulting in inconsistent motility analysis. Low sample volume (~1-2µL), and a short motility duration (burst motility of less than 15s) add to the complexity of these difficulties. The objectives of this study were to develop a microfluidic device with the capabilities to (1) standardize the method of activation for zebrafish sperm so that …
How Do Social Norms Affect Physical Activity And Performance On An Endurance Task?, Keith David Randazzo
How Do Social Norms Affect Physical Activity And Performance On An Endurance Task?, Keith David Randazzo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Despite the extensive benefits associated with a physically active life style, less than 50% of US adults engage in recommended levels of physical activity (PA), so finding ways to structure environments to promote PA is an important concern. Social norms, conceptualized as an individual’s perception of peer behavior, provide a framework for exploring factors that influence decisions to be physically active. Although researchers have investigated how social norms influence a variety of behaviors, the PA domain has not been fully explored. The focus of this dissertation is to apply social norms theories to investigate how normative information influences PA intentions …
In Vitro Investigation On Therapeutic Potential Of Juglone, A Naphthoquinone From Walnuts Against Pancreatic Cancer, Namrata Karki
In Vitro Investigation On Therapeutic Potential Of Juglone, A Naphthoquinone From Walnuts Against Pancreatic Cancer, Namrata Karki
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Juglone, a naphthoquinone found in Juglandaceae family, which includes black walnut, European walnut, and butter nut possess various biological activities. The anti-cancer properties of juglone has been reported; however, the effect of juglone in pancreatic cancer (PC) has not been elucidated yet. PC is an aggressive lethal, highly metastatic disease associated with poor prognosis and high mortality rate. PC is usually diagnosed in advanced stage and chemotherapy is provided as a first line of treatment. The de novo chemoresistance that develops with chemotherapeutic treatment creates a critical need for identification of novel therapeutic agents for effectively targeting the disease. The …
Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee
Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The theme of this work is time-lapse polymerizations triggered by pH clock reactions. The first chapter is the introduction and gives a long overview of the different chemistries studied here. The second chapter focuses on the bromate-sulfite clock reaction. Based on some simplified and accepted reaction equations for the bromate-sulfite clock. We presumed it may be possible to increase the pH of the solution via ammonia addition and hinder or significantly reduce the reactivity of the clock reagents, thus creating a storage stable reaction. Adding a polymer system that would not crosslink until the solution became acidic would have created …
Fear No Evil: Making Sense Of Intersectionality And Fear Of Crime Amongst Blacks In High Crime Neighborhoods, Melinda Jackson
Fear No Evil: Making Sense Of Intersectionality And Fear Of Crime Amongst Blacks In High Crime Neighborhoods, Melinda Jackson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The extant literature on fear of crime has relied almost entirely upon quantitative data and was criticized as atheoretical due to its focus on the demographic characteristics associated with vulnerability. Emerging qualitative research on fear of crime has begun to overcome this limitation by drawing upon an intersectional lens, but quantitative assessments have yet to fully incorporate this theoretical development. The current study addresses this limitation by analyzing qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews and quantitative data collected as part of a large-scale survey. The primary goal of this dissertation is to take an intersectional approach to understand the relationships …
Mathematical Scaling And Statistical Modeling Of Geopressured Geothermal Reservoirs, Esmail Ansari
Mathematical Scaling And Statistical Modeling Of Geopressured Geothermal Reservoirs, Esmail Ansari
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The interest for developing geopressured-geothermal reservoirs along the US Gulf Coast is increasing for securing energy needs and reducing global warming. Identifying the most attractive candidate reservoirs for geothermal energy production requires quick and simple models. Analytical models are not always available and simulating each case individually is expensive. The use of scaling and statistical modeling is one approach to translate the output of a simulator into quick models with general applicability at all scales. The developed models can quickly estimate temperature and thermal energy recovery from the geopressured-geothermal reservoirs. These models can screen large databases of reservoirs to select …
The Role Of Upper Ocean Heat Content And Sea Surface Temperature On Northeast Pacific Hurricane Evolution During Average And Active Years, Victoria Lauren Ford
The Role Of Upper Ocean Heat Content And Sea Surface Temperature On Northeast Pacific Hurricane Evolution During Average And Active Years, Victoria Lauren Ford
LSU Master's Theses
Upon comparison to typical neutral-ENSO conditions in the Northeast Pacific Ocean, the 2014 hurricane season has been identified as highly anomalous in both tropical cyclone frequency and intensity. This thesis seeks to investigate the influence of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and upper ocean heat content (UOHC), defined as the excess of heat present above 26°C, upon the upper ocean thermal structure, mesoscale features, and anomalies that led to an active hurricane season in the Northeast Pacific. The 2012 Northeast Pacific hurricane season was selected as a ‘normal’ season to fully quantify the anomalous 2014 hurricane season. Data sets utilized in …
Turning The Table Over: Collaboration And Critique At The New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, Erin Colleen Jordan
Turning The Table Over: Collaboration And Critique At The New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, Erin Colleen Jordan
LSU Master's Theses
In the late 1970s, the African American Jazz Coalition responded to the marginalization of black vendors at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival by partnering with the Festival to create the Koindu Marketplace, now known as Congo Square. Whereas much public representation of the Festival suggests a transcendence of racial boundaries inside Festival grounds, the content and structure of contemporary interviews with the activists reflect continued racial tensions, power dynamics, and resentment. This thesis analyzes oral histories with the founders of the Afrikan American Jazz Coalition stored at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive. Critical discourse analysis …
The Effects Of Teacher Induction Programs On Teacher Retention In Early Childhood, Heather Marie Reames
The Effects Of Teacher Induction Programs On Teacher Retention In Early Childhood, Heather Marie Reames
LSU Master's Theses
Teacher retention has become an increasing problem in today’s school systems. This vast amount of teacher turnover, or teachers leaving the field prior to retirement, is largely due to dissatisfaction with their jobs in the teaching field. There are a multitude of reasons why teachers become dissatisfied or frustrated with their jobs as educators, but it can be concluded that the initial reason for dissatisfaction in the field of education are the poor working conditions that exist for teachers (Halstead, 2013). Increased rates in attrition have also impacted the professional field of early childhood teaching. It is my objective to …
