The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using Qualitative And Quantitative Approaches And Methods In Language “Testing And Assessment” Research: A Literature Review, Ms Rahman

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The researchers of various disciplines often use qualitative and quantitative research methods and approaches for their studies. Some of these researchers like to be known as qualitative researchers; others like to be regarded as quantitative researchers. The researchers, thus, are sharply polarised; and they involve in a competition of pointing out the benefits of their own preferred methods and approaches. But, both the methods and approaches (qualitative and quantitative) have pros and cons. This study, therefore, aims to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using qualitative and quantitative research approaches and methods in language testing and assessment research. There is …

Tribological Study Of Textured Surfaces Created Using Modulation Assisted Machining For Steel-Aluminum Contact, Paarth Mehta Nov 2016

Tribological Study Of Textured Surfaces Created Using Modulation Assisted Machining For Steel-Aluminum Contact, Paarth Mehta

Theses

One of the major problems the world faces currently is the loss of energy and mechanical efficiency in machine components due to friction. Also, surface damage due to friction and resulting part repairs and replacement has cost US industries a reportedly US $280 billion/year. Recent work in the field of surface modification and texturing has shown, that, artificially created micro textures significantly reduce friction and wear of lubricated surfaces. Micro-scale artificial textures in friction paring contacts acts as lubricant reservoirs and wear particle receptacles to boost hydrodynamic pressure, which influences the lubrication regimes. In this study, the Stribeck curve of …

Sex Ed To Go- An Analysis Of Comprehensive Sexual Education Mobile Phone Applications, Kerstin M. Kalke Nov 2016

Sex Ed To Go- An Analysis Of Comprehensive Sexual Education Mobile Phone Applications, Kerstin M. Kalke

Communication ETDs

The United States has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates among developed countries and the numbers of STIs have increased during the last few years. Mobile phone applications constitute a promising platform to disseminate sexual health information and to reduce adverse health outcomes, particularly among teens. In order to be effective, apps have to follow a comprehensive approach to sexuality education, include concepts of behavior change theories, and adhere to health literacy principles.

This study used a mixed-methods approach consisting of a quantitative content analysis and qualitative thematic analysis to assess the quality of sexual education apps available to …

Inhibition Of P73 Function By Pifithrin-Α As Revealed By Studies In Zebrafish Embryos, William R Davidson, Qing Ren, Gabor Kari, Ori Kashi, Adam Dicker Md, Phd, Ulrich Rodeck

Bodine Journal

The p53 family of proteins contains two members that have been implicated in sensitization of cells and organisms to genotoxic stress, i.e., p53 itself and p73. In vitro, lack of either p53 or p73 can protect certain cell types in the adult organism against death upon exposure to DNA damaging agents. The present study was designed to assess the relative contribution of p53 to radiation resistance of an emerging vertebrate model organism, i.e., zebrafish embryos. Consistent with previous reports, suppressing p53 protein expression using antisense morpholino oligonucleotides (MOs) increased survival and reduced gross morphological alterations in zebrafish embryos exposed to …

Flexible Needle-Tissue Interaction Modeling With Depth-Varying Mean Parameter: Preliminary Study, Kai Guo Yan, Tarun Podder, Yan Yu, Tien-I Liu, Christopher W.S. Cheng, Wan Sing Ng Nov 2016

Flexible Needle-Tissue Interaction Modeling With Depth-Varying Mean Parameter: Preliminary Study, Kai Guo Yan, Tarun Podder, Yan Yu, Tien-I Liu, Christopher W.S. Cheng, Wan Sing Ng

Bodine Journal

Flexible needle steering has aroused a lot of research interest in recent years. It has the potential to correct targeting errors, which may be caused by needle bending, tissue deformation, or error in insertion angle. In addition, control and planning based on a steering model can guide the needle to some areas that are currently not amenable to needles because of obstacles, such as bone or sensitive tissues. Thus, there is a clear motivation for needle steering. In this paper, a spring–beam– damper model is proposed to describe the dynamics during the needle–tissue contact procedure. Considering tissue inhomogeneity, depth-varying mean …

Does Intraoperative Radiation Therapy Improve Local Tumor Control In Patients Undergoing Pancreaticoduodenectomy For Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma? Does Intraoperative Radiation Therapy Improve Local Tumor Control In Patients Undergoing Pancreaticoduodenectomy For Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma? A Propensity Score Analysis, Timothy Showalter Md, Atul Rao, Rani Anne Md, Francis E. Rosato, Ernest L Rosato, Jocelyn Andrel, Terry Hyslop, Xia Xu, Adam C. Berger

Bodine Journal

Background:

Locoregional recurrence (LRR) is an important factor after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for pancreatic cancer. IORT administered to the resection bed may improve local tumor control.

Methods:

We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent PD at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) between 1995 and 2005 to identify patients who underwent resection with and without intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT). Data collected included age, gender, complications, margin status, stage, survival, and recurrence. Unadjusted analyses of the IORT and non-IORT groups were performed using Fisher’s chi-square method for discrete variables and Wilcoxon Rank Sum test for continuous variables. To account for biases …

Nuclear Factor Κb Inhibitors Alleviate And The Proteasome Inhibitor Ps-341 Exacerbates Radiation Toxicity In Zebrafish Embryos, Borbala Daroczi, Gabor Kari, Qing Ren, Adam Dicker Md, Phd, Ulrich Rodeck Nov 2016

Nuclear Factor Κb Inhibitors Alleviate And The Proteasome Inhibitor Ps-341 Exacerbates Radiation Toxicity In Zebrafish Embryos, Borbala Daroczi, Gabor Kari, Qing Ren, Adam Dicker Md, Phd, Ulrich Rodeck

Bodine Journal

Inflammatory changes are a major component of the normal tissue response to ionizing radiation, and increased nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) activity is an important mediator of inflammatory responses. Here, we used zebrafish embryos to assess the capacity of two different classes of pharmacologic agents known to target NF-κB to modify radiation toxicity in the vertebrate organism. These were proteasome inhibitors, including lactacystin, MG132, and PS-341 (Bortezomib/VELCADE), and direct inhibitors of NF-κB activity, including ethyl pyruvate (EP) and the synthetic triterpenoid CDDO-TFEA (RTA401), among others. The proteasome inhibitors either did not significantly affect radiation sensitivity of zebrafish embryos (MG132, lactacystin) or …

Accident Rates, Phase Of Operations, And Injury Severity For Solo Students In Pursuit Of Private Pilot Certification (1994–2013), Douglas Boyd, Peter Dittmer

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Flight training accidents constitute 14% of general aviation accidents. Herein we determined the rates, injury severity, and phase of flight for primary student solo accidents/incidents (mishaps) in Cessna 172 aircraft.

Mishaps over the period spanning 1994–2013 were identified from the NTSB database. Student population data were from the FAA. Statistics employed proportion tests, Poisson distribution, and Mann-Whitney tests.

Across the study period, 598 mishaps were identified. While the mishap rate increased nearly two-fold between 1994/1997 and 2002/ 2005, a 35% decline was evident thereafter. Nevertheless, no statistical difference in mishap rates was evident between the initial and current periods. Over …
