Regulation Of Gonad Morphogenesis In Drosophila Melanogaster By Btb Family Transcription Factors, Diane Silva, Kenneth W. Olsen, Magdalena Bednarz, Andrew Droste, Christopher P. Lenkeit, Jennifer Mierisch, Edwin Chaharbakhshi, Emily R. Temple-Wood Nov 2016

Regulation Of Gonad Morphogenesis In Drosophila Melanogaster By Btb Family Transcription Factors, Diane Silva, Kenneth W. Olsen, Magdalena Bednarz, Andrew Droste, Christopher P. Lenkeit, Jennifer Mierisch, Edwin Chaharbakhshi, Emily R. Temple-Wood

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

During embryogenesis, primordial germ cells (PGCs) and somatic gonadal precursor cells (SGPs) migrate and coalesce to form the early gonad. A failure of the PGCs and SGPs to form a gonad with the proper architecture not only affects germ cell development, but can also lead to infertility. Therefore, it is critical to identify the molecular mechanisms that function within both the PGCs and SGPs to promote gonad morphogenesis. We have characterized the phenotypes of two genes, longitudinals lacking (lola) and ribbon (rib), that are required for the coalescence and compaction of the embryonic gonad in Drosophila melanogaster. rib …

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Emotional Labour On Health Managers, Carlene Boucher Nov 2016

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Emotional Labour On Health Managers, Carlene Boucher

The Qualitative Report

The objective of the study was to examine how surface acting is used by middle managers to manage the emotional displays of executives in the health industry in Australia. The research was located within a social constructionist epistemology and the theoretical construct used to structure the study was surface acting. Data was generated through qualitative interviews with 49 middle managers. Analysis was undertaken using grounded theory and thematic analysis. The main finding was that unlike male managers, female managers took on the role of managing the emotional displays of senior staff and used surface acting as the means of doing …

Determination Of Aqueous Surfactant Solution Surface Tensions With A Surface Tensiometer, Remelisa Esteves, Birce Dikici Ph.D, Matthew Lehman, Qayyum Mazumder, Nonso Onukwuba Nov 2016

Determination Of Aqueous Surfactant Solution Surface Tensions With A Surface Tensiometer, Remelisa Esteves, Birce Dikici Ph.D, Matthew Lehman, Qayyum Mazumder, Nonso Onukwuba

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

Surfactant solutions are applicable to engineering systems for cooling equipment for electronics. Surfactants can be added to water to improve heat transfer. An application of using aqueous surfactant solutions can be through microchannel heat sink. Although it is ideal to redesign these systems to reduce heat, it is a costly method. Surfactant solutions at optimal solution concentration can be able to transfer heat quickly and effectively with minimum expense. The surface tension of surfactant solutions is an important parameter for boiling heat transfer and must be taken into consideration. The purpose of this research is to measure surface tension of …

Determination Of Surfactant Solution Viscosities With A Rotational Viscometer, Remelisa Esteves, Nonso Onukwuba, Birce Dikici Ph.D

Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal

Aqueous surfactant solutions are used in engineering systems for improving boiling heat transfer. The purpose of this research is to determine the viscosities of surfactant solutions and to investigate the effect of composition on viscosity. The results obtained can possibly be used as reference for further study in the effects of surfactant solution viscosities on nucleate boiling. A rotational viscometer was used to determine the viscosities of three surfactant solutions – SLS, EH-14, and SA-9 – of various compositions at room temperature. It was discovered that the viscosities of SLS, EH-14, and SA-9 had a nearly consistent pattern as their …

Involving Stakeholders In Improving School Discipline Through Pbs, George Wilkerson Nov 2016

Involving Stakeholders In Improving School Discipline Through Pbs, George Wilkerson

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Having quality discipline in schools is vital for creating a culture that enhances student achievement. The purpose and function of a school's discipline procedure is a task that school leadership cannot take on alone.

This presentation will discuss ways that East Coweta Middle, a rural school in Senoia Georgia, has involved stakeholders in the discipline process and how we have modeled the school's Positive Behavior Support in a communal effort to positively impact students, and reduce the amount of time students miss class due to behavioral issues.

This presentation will cover several steps in the decision and implementation process of …

From Tears To Tiers: Mental Health & Pbis In Schools, Jason W. Byars, Kelly Petaccio Nov 2016

From Tears To Tiers: Mental Health & Pbis In Schools, Jason W. Byars, Kelly Petaccio

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Students living with a mental illness are more likely to drop out of school, enter the juvenile justice system, and die by suicide. In light of recent national tragedies in schools there is a sense of urgency to develop policies and procedures for the early detection of students living with a mental illness. School systems throughout the nation are incorporating Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) into their educational network in order to improve school climate. Within the framework of PBIS are tiered behavioral supports to address the needs of students, regardless of their emotional wellness. Layering the efforts of …

A Glimpse Into The Future Of Library Research, Tina H. Buck Nov 2016

A Glimpse Into The Future Of Library Research, Tina H. Buck

Illuminations

Doing research or helping others do research is part of daily life for many people in the university, a known and familiar activity. For a few people, though, the prospect of doing research or helping others to do so is part of the new life they are imagining for themselves after they earn their master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS). The author corresponded with three MLIS students currently working at the John C. Hitt Library in staff positions to learn about the future of library research through their eyes.

Our interviewees are Lily Flick, Adjunct in Acquisitions & …

Student Unrest: From Historic Infamy To Humane Inclusivity, Matthew Cooney, Kenneth Borland Nov 2016

Student Unrest: From Historic Infamy To Humane Inclusivity, Matthew Cooney, Kenneth Borland

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

Infamous responses to historic student unrest clash with contemporary student affairs educators’ desire for a humane, inclusive approach to student unrest. The authors detail two historic responses: the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre at the Universidad Autónoma de México and the 1970 Kent State University shootings.

Like today, students expressed escalating dissatisfaction with social conditions and displeasure with official responses. To not repeat unrest becoming violence, authors introduce concepts for humanely and inclusively responding to student unrest.

Revisiting Chiara Lubich’S Paradise ’49 In Light Of The Letter To The Ephesians, Gérard Rossé Nov 2016

Revisiting Chiara Lubich’S Paradise ’49 In Light Of The Letter To The Ephesians, Gérard Rossé

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author explores Chiara Lubich’s mystical writings in light of the Letter to the Ephesians, focusing on the Holy Spirit, the Risen Christ, the church, and the cosmos. The Holy Spirit is seen as creating the conditions for unity between persons, in the church and throughout the cosmos, according to the pattern of the Trinity, that shows the “mothering face of God.” The Risen Christ is presented in his cosmic dimension, which brings creation to its eschatological recapitulation, a “marriage of the Uncreated and the created.” The Risen Christ within the church is presented in terms of his upward movement …
