All Possible Regressions Using Ibm Spss: A Practitioner’S Guide To Automatic Linear Modeling, T. Chris Oshima, Theresa Dell-Ross

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Although the all possible subsets regression procedure (or all possible regressions) has been a preferred method for selecting the “best” model in multiple regression, it might not have been the most frequently used method by SPSS users partly due to its time consuming nature of evaluating all possible combinations of multiple regression models. Starting with Version 19, however, IBM SPSS introduced a new procedure called Automatic Linear Modeling, enabling researchers to select best subsets automatically. While the arrival of this new procedure is highly welcomed by researchers, practitioners, and students, it has also raised a potential threat of misuse due …

Using Planned Reading Circles To Increase Pre-Service Special Education Teachers' Content Knowledge, Yvonne Hefner Oct 2016

Using Planned Reading Circles To Increase Pre-Service Special Education Teachers' Content Knowledge, Yvonne Hefner

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

This presentation will describe the implementation of an appropriate and effective teaching method to help pre-service teacher candidates learn about major course topics. As a method of teaching course content the presenter implements reading circles and the use of the wiki to teach course content in a college course for pre-service special education teacher candidates. The reading circles offer a direct way to encourage reading of course content and, in turn, lead to a better understanding of course content. The wiki allows the students to construct, discuss, revise, and fine-tune their understandings and interpretations of assigned readings. Both the reading …

Investigating Elementary School Teachers’ Interactions Relating To Newcomer Emergent Bilingual Students, Amy Cain

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Five of the top 16 counties in the United States with the fastest-growing Latino populations from 2000 to 2007 are in Georgia (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). The Georgia metropolitan area where the study occurred has more Latinos than Austin, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, or Tucson (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). Particularly following the New Latino Diaspora (Hamann, Wortham, & Murillo, 2002; Murillo, 2002; and Villenas, 2002) schools in the Southeastern United States have more and more Spanish-speaking students (Pew Hispanic Research Center, 2015). However, most classroom teachers have not received specialized training or professional development relating to these students (Ballantyne, …

Examining The Development Of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy For Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers, Natasha Ramsay-Jordan

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy (CRMP) should be valued and presented as the norm for teachers so that students from diverse backgrounds can access essential mathematical knowledge (Aguirre & del Rosario, 2013; Bonner & Adams, 2012; Leonard & Moore, 2014). Prospective teachers of diverse students need to have opportunities in their professional study to develop the shared knowledge, perceptions and attitudes required for effective implementation of culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy (Gay, 2002). The purpose of this study is to begin investigative and exploratory work through the coupling of qualitative research methodology and critical race theory to examine preservice secondary mathematics teachers’ …

We report the detections of a giant planet (MARVELS-7b) and a brown dwarf (BD) candidate (MARVELS-7c) around the primary star in the close binary system, HD 87646. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first close binary system with more than one substellar circumprimary companion that has been discovered. The detection of this giant planet was accomplished using the first multi-object Doppler instrument (KeckET) at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) telescope. Subsequent radial velocity observations using the Exoplanet Tracker at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, the High Resolution Spectrograph at the Hobby Eberley telescope, the "Classic" spectrograph …

Design Implications Of Changing Student Demographics, Andy Igonor, Natalya Koehler Oct 2016

Design Implications Of Changing Student Demographics, Andy Igonor, Natalya Koehler

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success

Many non-traditional higher education institutions have built their cyber security and computer science programs {CSCS) to cater to the needs of adult, working learners. Focusing on this demographic has implications for course and program design. Design approaches have therefore focused on strategies aimed at translating knowledge into learning nuggets specific to the adult learner, enabling day one job-readiness upon graduation. Recently, there has been increased focus on CSCS education at the high school level. The computer science for all initiative was announced recently by US President Obama, and there have been increased creativity on the part of higher education institutions …

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success

  • Most of today's educational system teaches students standardized content that fails to represent the real world in which they live and will work.
  • Often Educational practices lack a problem-solving methodology, and fail to engage students enough to choose a career in STEM fields.
  • Subject matter is standardized across disparate communities, regions, and cultures and often students are disengaged and teachers struggle to make STEM come alive in the classroom.
  • However, the PAST Foundation has revolutionized how we teach STEM today and are providing their innovative approach to schools across the state and nation.
  • The new PAST Innovation Lab model can …

Observing the motion of the nuclear wave packets during a molecular reaction, in both space and time, is crucial for understanding and controlling the outcome of photoinduced chemical reactions. We have imaged the motion of a vibrational wave packet in isolated iodine molecules using ultrafast electron diffraction with relativistic electrons. The time-varying interatomic distance was measured with a precision 0.07 Å and temporal resolution of 230 fs full width at half maximum. The method is not only sensitive to the position but also the shape of the nuclear wave packet.

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The range of a species is determined by the balance of its demographic rates across space. Population growth rates are widely hypothesized to be greatest at the geographic center of the species range, but indirect empirical support for this pattern using abundance as a proxy has been mixed, and demographic rates are rarely quantified on a large spatial scale. Therefore, the texture of how demographic rates of a species vary over its range remains an open question. We quantified seasonal fecundity of populations spanning the majority of the global range of a single species, the saltmarsh sparrow (Ammodramus caudacutus …

The Value Of Crowdsourcing For Complex Problems: Comparative Evidence From Software Developed By The Crowd And Professionals, Abhishek Tripathi, Deepak Khazanchi Oct 2016

The Value Of Crowdsourcing For Complex Problems: Comparative Evidence From Software Developed By The Crowd And Professionals, Abhishek Tripathi, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Crowdsourcing is a problem solving model. In the context of complex problems, conventional theory suggests that solving complex problems is a province of professionals, that is, people with sufficient knowledge about the domain. Prior literature has indicated that the crowd, in addition to professionals, is also a great source for solving problems such as product innovation and idea generation. However, this assumption has yet to be tested. Adopting a quasi-experimental approach, this study uses a two-phase process to investigate this question. In the first phase we compare the development of a software by the crowd and professionals. In the second …

Large-Scale Off-Target Identification Using Fast And Accurate Dual Regularized One- Class Collaborative Filtering And Its Application To Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim, Aleksandar Poleksic, Yuan Yao, Hanghang Tong, Di He, Luke Zhuang, Patrick Meng, Lei Xie Oct 2016

Large-Scale Off-Target Identification Using Fast And Accurate Dual Regularized One- Class Collaborative Filtering And Its Application To Drug Repurposing, Hansaim Lim, Aleksandar Poleksic, Yuan Yao, Hanghang Tong, Di He, Luke Zhuang, Patrick Meng, Lei Xie

Publications and Research

Target-based screening is one of the major approaches in drug discovery. Besides the intended target, unexpected drug off-target interactions often occur, and many of them have not been recognized and characterized. The off-target interactions can be responsible for either therapeutic or side effects. Thus, identifying the genome-wide off-targets of lead compounds or existing drugs will be critical for designing effective and safe drugs, and providing new opportunities for drug repurposing. Although many computational methods have been developed to predict drug-target interactions, they are either less accurate than the one that we are proposing here or computationally too intensive, thereby limiting …

The Structure Of The Antibiotic Deactivating, N-Hydroxylating Rifampicin Monooxygenase, Li Kai Liu, Heba Abdelwahab, Julia S. Martin Del Campo, Ritcha Mehra-Chaudhary, Pablo Sobrado, John J. Tanner

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rifampicin monooxygenase (RIFMO) catalyzes the N-hydroxylation of the natural product antibiotic rifampicin (RIF) to 2′-N-hydroxy-4-oxo-rifampicin, a metabolite with much lower antimicrobial activity. RIFMO shares moderate sequence similarity with well characterized flavoprotein monooxygenases, but the protein has not been isolated and characterized at the molecular level. Herein, we report crystal structures of RIFMO from Nocardia farcinica, the determination of the oligomeric state in solution with small angle x-ray scattering, and the spectrophotometric characterization of substrate binding. The structure identifies RIFMO as a class A flavoprotein monooxygenase and is similar in fold and quaternary structure to MtmOIV and OxyS, which are enzymes …

An Analysis Of Successful Charter School Operations, Margaret Helen Ameel Oct 2016

An Analysis Of Successful Charter School Operations, Margaret Helen Ameel

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study adds to the literature specific practices and systems that contribute to successful charter schools. Nine open ended interviews were conducted, which were then read and coded to identify themes. Using a process consistent with the constant comparison method, codes were transferred into a separate document. To ensure novel code development, constant comparison involved a recursive check of the code list. The code list was considered complete after reaching a point of theoretical saturation whereby novel codes were no longer necessary to interpret uncoded interview content. Codes were then assembled into higher order themes based on shared meaning and …

Packaging Film Impact On Food Organoleptic Properties: An Experimental Study, Stefano Tamarindo, Carine Pastore

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Most packaged food products deteriorate in quality due to mass transfer phenomena such as moisture absorption, oxygen invasion, flavor loss, undesirable odor absorption and packaging material migration. An approach to increase the shelf life of the packaged food, while exploiting the advantages of flexible packaging, is to use flexible multi-layer polyethylene (PE)-based films including a barrier layer. This paper reviews different oxygen barrier layers used in Doy Pack flexible pouches for fruit puree and presents the impact of storage conditions on the organoleptic properties. In this study, the performances of five types of PE film pouched filled with fruit puree …

Learning Is Not Child's Play: Assessing The No Child Left Behind Act, Gwendolyn J. Dean

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This research examines the implementation and impact of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) on education quality. More specifically, it outlines how states defined NCLB provisions, including trajectory selection, reporting techniques, confidence interval use, and methods used to inform the public of outcomes. It also discusses NCLB’s impact on education outcomes by assessing changes in fourth grade reading scores under NCLB. This qualitative study includes several demographic variables that will allow the study to control for the impact that NCLB’s implementations has caused and its effect on school districts that have taken on this process.
