In-Mould Gel-Coating For Polymer Composites, Zoltán J. Gombos, John Summerscales
In-Mould Gel-Coating For Polymer Composites, Zoltán J. Gombos, John Summerscales
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Surface coatings (gel-coats) are often used on commercial composite mouldings for cosmetic and/or durability reasons. They have traditionally been prepared in open moulds with styrene vapour allowed to escape to the workspace and environment. This paper considers the development of in-mould gel-coating processes. A Double Glass Plate Mould (DGPM) was used to prepare flat composite test panels. Laminates were manufactured by liquid composite moulding processes. Conventional hand painted gel-coat, innovative In-Mould Gel-Coating with a trilayer separator fabric (IMGC) or In-Mould Surfacing with a silicone shim (IMS) were studied. The surface quality of the final products was measured using a Wave-Scan …

Technical Difficulties: Why A Broader Reading Of Graham And Miller Should Prohibit De Facto Life Without Parole Sentences For Juvenile Offenders, Daniel Jones
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that the spirit of the trilogy prohibits courts from sentencing juvenile offenders, regardless of their crime(s), to de facto life sentences. This Note maintains that the Eighth Amendment of the United States Constitution and the relevant case law render de facto life sentences unconstitutional. Part I examines the history of juvenile sentencing laws and concludes that many of the laws currently in place are based on a misguided fear that juveniles are more culpable than adult offenders. Part I also examines the relevant Supreme Court Eighth Amendment jurisprudence as well as the competing theoretical arguments used …

Confidence Schemes: Theft Loss Deductions, Restitution, And Public Policy, Steven F. Friedell
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Article focuses on some of these problems in the field of federal income tax. It suggests that when part of the IRC appears to direct a particular outcome, courts are prone to error when they override that command by imposing a penalty based on the judges’ moral condemnation of a party’s behavior. It would be better for courts to employ the statute’s intrinsic set of public policies to guide their decision making. In some instances, the results will not change because of other overlooked provisions in the statute. However, adherence to the legislature’s balance of conflicting interests will …

This disclosure presents a system and method to select unsupervised data for speech processing using the distribution of supervised data in an embedded space. The data sets are represented by different colors to differentiate between supervised and unsupervised utterances. The system samples a set of utterances from the unsupervised data, such that the distribution of the unsupervised sample matches with the distribution of the supervised utterances. The sampling method converts the data sets into bins in a two-dimensional histogram, which is then normalized using the size of the data set for each bin. The data is then manipulated and selected …

Testing Modeling Assumptions In The West Africa Ebola Outbreak, Matthew C. Ingram, Keith Burghardt, Christopher Verzijl, Junming Huang, Binyang Song, Marie-Pierre Hasne
Political Science Faculty Scholarship
The Ebola virus in West Africa has infected almost 30,000 and killed over 11,000 people. Recent models of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) have often made assumptions about how the disease spreads, such as uniform transmissibility and homogeneous mixing within a population. In this paper, we test whether these assumptions are necessarily correct, and offer simple solutions that may improve disease model accuracy. First, we use data and models of West African migration to show that EVD does not homogeneously mix, but spreads in a predictable manner. Next, we estimate the initial growth rate of EVD within country administrative divisions and …

Atomic Tiles: Manipulative Resources For Exploring Bonding And Molecular Structure, Alan L. Kiste, Rebecca G. Hooper, Gregory E. Scott, Seth Bush
Chemistry and Biochemistry
A simple manipulative resource, Atomic Tiles, is described for scaffolding the learning of Lewis structures without using algorithmic, rule-based methods of drawing. Students use Atomic Tiles to (1) create models of bonding that lead to drawing Lewis structures, (2) use the structures they create to infer patterns required for rational structures and common organic functional groups, (3) translate between Lewis structures and molecular models, and (4) use molecular models to identify isomers.

Exploring How Secondary Pre-Service Teachers’ Use Online Social Bookmarking To Envision Literacy In The Disciplines, Jamie Colwell, Kristen Gregory
Exploring How Secondary Pre-Service Teachers’ Use Online Social Bookmarking To Envision Literacy In The Disciplines, Jamie Colwell, Kristen Gregory
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This study considers how pre-service teachers envision disciplinary literacy through an online social bookmarking project. Thirty secondary pre-service teachers participated in the project through an undergraduate literacy course. Online bookmarks and post-project reflections were collected and analyzed using a constant comparative approach to determine emergent themes. Results suggest varying levels of disciplinary knowledge among pre-service teachers, influences of pre-service teachers' envisionments on posted bookmarks, and considerations about standardized testing in disciplinary literacy instruction. Implications for teacher education are discussed in light of these results.

Fictional Narratives About Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Focus Group Analysis And Insight, Teresa Cardon, Jane E. Kelley
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Given the CDC’s report of a 30% increase in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses over the past two years, it is important to increase awareness and educate teachers and students in both general and special education classrooms. One way to bridge the gap between students with and without ASD is to use authentic narrative fiction as a teaching tool. The goal of this study was to identify aspects of stories with characters with ASD that contribute to authentic and accurate depictions. Insights were elicited from focus groups that included insiders, individuals or family members with ASD, and educators who work …

Fedrr: Fast, Exhaustive Detection Of Redundant Hierarchical Relations For Quality Improvement Of Large Biomedical Ontologies, Guangming Xing, Guo-Qiang Zhang, Licong Cui
Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications
Background: Redundant hierarchical relations refer to such patterns as two paths from one concept to another, one with length one (direct) and the other with length greater than one (indirect). Each redundant relation represents a possibly unintended defect that needs to be corrected in the ontology quality assurance process. Detecting and eliminating redundant relations would help improve the results of all methods relying on the relevant ontological systems as knowledge source, such as the computation of semantic distance between concepts and for ontology matching and alignment.
Results: This paper introduces a novel and scalable approach, called FEDRR – Fast, Exhaustive …

Towards A Model Of Electronic Word-Of-Mouth And Its Impact On The Hotel Industry, Edwin N. Torres, Dipendra Singh
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Scholars and practitioners recognize that spreading word-of-mouth can play an important role in the formation of a hotel’s image. However, the relationships among various measures of online customer engagement are relatively unknown. The present study analyzes the relationships and quantifies the impacts of various measures of online engagement including the number of online reviews, overall rating, and relative ranking. The researchers used path analysis on a sample of 178 hotels to study the relationships among relevant variables and build a model to explain the impact of such measures (Figure 2). The results reveal there is a positive direct effect of …
A P-Value Model For Theoretical Power Analysis And Its Applications In Multiple Testing Procedures, Fengqing Zhang, Jiangtao Gou
A P-Value Model For Theoretical Power Analysis And Its Applications In Multiple Testing Procedures, Fengqing Zhang, Jiangtao Gou
Publications and Research
Background: Power analysis is a critical aspect of the design of experiments to detect an effect of a given size. When multiple hypotheses are tested simultaneously, multiplicity adjustments to p-values should be taken into account in power analysis. There are a limited number of studies on power analysis in multiple testing procedures. For some methods, the theoretical analysis is difficult and extensive numerical simulations are often needed, while other methods oversimplify the information under the alternative hypothesis. To this end, this paper aims to develop a new statistical model for power analysis in multiple testing procedures.
Methods: We propose a …

Large-Scale Outflows In Luminous Qsos Revisited: The Impact Of Beam Smearing On Agn Feedback Efficiencies, Bernd Husemann, Julia Scharwächter, Vardha N. Bennert, V. Manieri, Jong-Hak Woo, Darshan Kakkad
Physics
Context. Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is thought to play an important role in quenching star formation in galaxies. However, the efficiency with which AGN dissipate their radiative energy into the ambient medium remains strongly debated.
Aims. Enormous observational efforts have been made to constrain the energetics of AGN feedback by mapping the kinematics of the ionized gas on kpc scale. We study how the observed kinematics and inferred energetics are affected by beam smearing of a bright unresolved narrow-line region (NLR) due to seeing.
Methods. We re-analyse optical integral-field spectroscopy of a sample of twelve luminous unobscured quasi-stellar …

Low-mass white dwarfs (LMWDs) are believed to be exclusive products of binary evolution, as the universe is not old enough to produce them from single stars. Because of the strong tidal forces operating during the binary interaction phase, the remnant systems observed today are expected to have negligible eccentricities. Here, we report on the first unambiguous identification of an LMWD in an eccentric (e = 0.13) orbit around the millisecond pulsar PSR J2234+0511, which directly contradicts this picture. We use our spectra and radio-timing solution (derived elsewhere) to infer the WD temperature (Teff = 8600 ±190 K), and peculiar systemic …

Slip Distribution Of The 2014 Mw=8.1 Pisagua, Northern Chile, Earthquake Sequence Estimated From Coseismic Fore-Arc Surface Cracks, John P. Loveless, Chelsea P. Scott, Richard W. Allmendinger, Gabriel González
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
The 2014 Mw = 8.1 Iquique (Pisagua), Chile, earthquake sequence ruptured a segment of the Nazca-South America subduction zone that last hosted a great earthquake in 1877. The sequence opened >3700 surface cracks in the fore arc of decameter-scale length and millimeter-to centimeter-scale aperture. We use the strikes of measured cracks, inferred to be perpendicular to coseismically applied tension, to estimate the slip distribution of the main shock and largest aftershock. The slip estimates are compatible with those based on seismic, geodetic, and tsunami data, indicating that geologic observations can also place quantitative constraints on rupture properties. The earthquake sequence …

A New Image Processing Procedure Integrating Pci-Rpc And Arcgis-Spline Tools To Improve The Orthorectification Accuracy Of High-Resolution Satellite Imagery, Hongying Zhang, Ruiliang Pu, Xiuguo Liu
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Given the low accuracy of the traditional remote sensing image processing software when orthorectifying satellite images that cover mountainous areas, and in order to make a full use of mutually compatible and complementary characteristics of the remote sensing image processing software PCI-RPC (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) and ArcGIS-Spline, this study puts forward a new operational and effective image processing procedure to improve the accuracy of image orthorectification. The new procedure first processes raw image data into an orthorectified image using PCI with RPC model (PCI-RPC), and then the orthorectified image is further processed using ArcGIS with the Spline tool (ArcGIS-Spline). We …

Magnetic Reconnection With A Fast Perpendicular Sheared Flow, Xuanye Ma, Antonius Otto, Peter A. Delamere
Magnetic Reconnection With A Fast Perpendicular Sheared Flow, Xuanye Ma, Antonius Otto, Peter A. Delamere
Publications
Magnetic reconnection at the Earth's low‐latitude magnetopause near the flank region is likely associated with a large sheared flow, being frequently quasi‐perpendicular to the antiparallel magnetic field components. The magnitude of a fast sheared flow can be super‐Alfvénic and even overcome the local fast mode speed. A scaling analysis implies a contradiction between the Walén relation and the balance of the total pressure for magnetic reconnection with a supercritical perpendicular sheared flow. This study uses one‐ and two‐dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to demonstrate that the traditional reconnection layer violates the Walén relation but still maintains the total pressure balance in …
