Rigidity In Dynamics: In Memory Of J.-C. Yoccoz, Saša Kocić Oct 2016

Rigidity In Dynamics: In Memory Of J.-C. Yoccoz, Saša Kocić

Dynamical Systems Seminar

One of the world leaders in dynamical systems theory, Jean-Christophe Yoccoz died last month. I will give a general mathematical audience talk on rigidity in dynamics, an area to which he contributed a lot. Rigidity theory of circle diffeomorphisms is a classic topic in dynamical systems largely developed by Herman and Yoccoz. Rigidity, in this context, refers to a phenomenon that every two maps, within a given topological equivalence class, are smoothly conjugate to each other (i.e., the same up to a smooth coordinate change). A natural approach to Herman's theory involves renormalization, a powerful idea that connects many different …

Clicker Use In Introductory Biology: Impacts On Exam Performance, Joanna K. Hubbard Oct 2016

Clicker Use In Introductory Biology: Impacts On Exam Performance, Joanna K. Hubbard

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

In-class response systems, or clickers, are useful formative assessment tools that support learning by providing real-time feedback that can be used to correct misconceptions through peer discussion and instructor guidance. Previous research has shown that peer discussion improves conceptual understanding within a class period. In this study, we asked whether the benefits of peer discussion could be detected on a longer time scale. We asked exam questions that were isomorphic to in-class clicker questions and found students that participated in peer discussion scored higher than students that were not in class for the discussion. We also examined the effect of …

Cave Diving: Results Of The Exploration Of The “Combe Du Creux”, P. Boudinet Oct 2016

Cave Diving: Results Of The Exploration Of The “Combe Du Creux”, P. Boudinet

KIP Articles

This article deals with speleology applied to the exploration of a siphon named “Combe du Creux”. It is located in France, in the department of the Doubs. We present surveys and the specific forms that are encountered in this flooded cave; eventually we propose a possible evolution of this sump. Cave diving, regarded as cave science, closely associated to underwater photography, is a good mean to investigate such a cave. We have been diving in this sump since 2003 and we present the results of 13 years of explorations, up to July 2016. After having explored this cave up to …

Maximum Matching For Anonymous Trees With Constant Space Per Process, Ajoy Datta, Lawrence Larmore, Toshimitsu Masuzawa Oct 2016

Maximum Matching For Anonymous Trees With Constant Space Per Process, Ajoy Datta, Lawrence Larmore, Toshimitsu Masuzawa

Computer Science Faculty Research

We give a silent self-stabilizing protocol for computing a maximum matching in an anonymous network with a tree topology. The round complexity of our protocol is O(diam), where diam is the diameter of the network, and the step complexity is O(n diam), where n is the number of processes in the network. The working space complexity is O(1) per process, although the output necessarily takes O(log δ) space per process, where δ is the degree of that process. To implement parent pointers in constant space, regardless of degree, we use the cyclic Abelian group ℤ7. © Ajoy K. Datta, Lawrence …

Processes Of Multibathyal Aragonite Undersaturation In The Arctic Ocean, Jonathan G. Wynn, Lisa Robbins, L. G. Anderson Oct 2016

Processes Of Multibathyal Aragonite Undersaturation In The Arctic Ocean, Jonathan G. Wynn, Lisa Robbins, L. G. Anderson

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

During 3 years of study (2010–2012), the western Arctic Ocean was found to have unique aragonite saturation profiles with up to three distinct aragonite undersaturation zones. This complexity is produced as inflow of Atlantic‐derived and Pacific‐derived water masses mix with Arctic‐derived waters, which are further modified by physiochemical and biological processes. The shallowest aragonite undersaturation zone, from the surface to ∼30 m depth is characterized by relatively low alkalinity and other dissolved ions. Besides local influence of biological processes on aragonite undersaturation of shallow coastal waters, the nature of this zone is consistent with dilution by sea‐ice melt and invasion …

Associations Among Elementary School Children’S Actual Motor Competence, Perceived Motor Competence, Physical Activity And Bmi : A Cross-Sectional Study, An V. De Meester, David F. Stodden, Ali S. Brian, Larissa True, Greet Cardon, Isabel Tallir, Leen Haerens Oct 2016

Associations Among Elementary School Children’S Actual Motor Competence, Perceived Motor Competence, Physical Activity And Bmi : A Cross-Sectional Study, An V. De Meester, David F. Stodden, Ali S. Brian, Larissa True, Greet Cardon, Isabel Tallir, Leen Haerens

Faculty Publications

Background

Positive associations between motor competence and physical activity have been identified by means of variable-centered analyses. To expand the understanding of these associations, this study used a person-centered approach to investigate whether different combinations (i.e., profiles) of actual and perceived motor competence exist (aim 1); and to examine differences in physical activity levels (aim 2) and weight status (aim 3) among children with different motor competence-based profiles.

Materials and Methods

Children’s (N = 361; 180 boys = 50%; Mage = 9.50±1.24yrs) actual motor competence was measured with the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 and their perceived motor …
