Acoustic Holographic Rendering With Two-Dimensional Metamaterial-Based Passive Phased Array., Yangbo Xie, Chen Shen, Wenqi Wang, Junfei Li, Dingjie Suo, Bogdan-Ioan Popa, Yun Jing, Steven A Cummer

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Acoustic holographic rendering in complete analogy with optical holography are useful for various applications, ranging from multi-focal lensing, multiplexed sensing and synthesizing three-dimensional complex sound fields. Conventional approaches rely on a large number of active transducers and phase shifting circuits. In this paper we show that by using passive metamaterials as subwavelength pixels, holographic rendering can be achieved without cumbersome circuitry and with only a single transducer, thus significantly reducing system complexity. Such metamaterial-based holograms can serve as versatile platforms for various advanced acoustic wave manipulation and signal modulation, leading to new possibilities in acoustic sensing, energy deposition and medical …

Technology In Eurasia Before Modern Times: A Survey, Norman C. Rothman Oct 2016

Technology In Eurasia Before Modern Times: A Survey, Norman C. Rothman

Comparative Civilizations Review

This work traces the development of technology in Eurasia before 1400 C.E. It covers the Middle East, China, India, and Europe. It puts the emphasis on such key areas as metallurgy and textiles as well as the development of inventions and innovations in the technological and applied scientific processes. Simultaneously, it examines the role that trade, urbanization, governmental policy, and cultural imperatives played in this process. Chronologically, it covers the ancient, classical, and medieval period periods. It includes a brief introduction dealing with definitions and ends with a general conclusion.

Does Price Efficiency Increase With Trading Volume? Evidence Of Nonlinearity And Power Laws In Etfs, Gunduz Caginalp, Mark Desantis Oct 2016

Does Price Efficiency Increase With Trading Volume? Evidence Of Nonlinearity And Power Laws In Etfs, Gunduz Caginalp, Mark Desantis

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Whether efficiency increases with increasing volume is an important issue that may illuminate trader strategies and distinguish between market theories. This relationship is tested using 124,236 daily observations comprising 68 large and liquid U.S. equity exchange traded funds (ETFs). ETFs have the advantage that efficiency can be measured in terms of the deviation between the trading price and the underlying net asset value that is reported each day. Our findings support the hypothesis that the relationship between volume and efficiency is nonlinear. Indeed, efficiency increases as volume increases from low to moderately high levels, but then decreases as volume increases …

Pathways To College Preparatory Advanced Academic Offerings In The Anchorage School District, Diane Hirshberg, Rosyland Frazier Oct 2016

Pathways To College Preparatory Advanced Academic Offerings In The Anchorage School District, Diane Hirshberg, Rosyland Frazier

CAEPR Reports

There are many ways a child in the Anchorage School District (ASD) can access advanced course offerings. To a parent these pathways may seem complex. ASD offers options for gifted and highly gifted students at the elementary and middle school level, and accelerated, and enriched learning opportunities such as honors and advanced placement courses at the secondary level. These opportunities, though linked, are not the same, nor do they necessarily follow from one to another in a straight path. Moreover, pathways to and through these opportunities can be quite different. Offerings are different at the elementary, middle and high school …

Hearing In The Juvenile Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas): A Comparison Of Underwater And Aerial Hearing Using Auditory Evoked Potentials, Wendy Dow Piniak, David A. Mann, Craig A. Harms, T. Todd Jones, Scott A. Eckert Oct 2016

Eckert

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Sea turtles spend much of their life in aquatic environments, but critical portions of their life cycle, such as nesting and hatching, occur in terrestrial environments, suggesting that it may be important for them to detect sounds in both air and water. In this study we compared underwater and aerial hearing sensitivities in five juvenile green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) by measuring auditory evoked potential responses to tone pip stimuli. Green sea turtles detected acoustic stimuli in both media, responding to underwater stimuli between 50 and 1600 Hz and aerial stimuli between 50 and 800 Hz, with maximum …

Understanding The Links Between Cyanobacteria Physiology And Hydrodynamics May Help Find Adaption Strategies For Toxic Blooms, John Rueter Oct 2016

Understanding The Links Between Cyanobacteria Physiology And Hydrodynamics May Help Find Adaption Strategies For Toxic Blooms, John Rueter

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Even though we are managing lakes to decrease algal blooms overall, harmful algal blooms seem to be showing up more and more frequently. Although the word “blooms” connotes dominance and rapid growth, dangerous accumulations of cyanobacteria can occur because of combinations of physiological advantages and particular weather and hydrodynamic conditions. I am particularly interested in specific conditions that might favor Aphanizomenon versus those that might favor Microcystis in Upper Klamath and Agency Lakes. Aphanizomenon is a nuisance and large blooms can lead to oxygen depletion and fish deaths. Microcystis can both be a nuisance and is toxic. The comparison of …

Highly Selective Halide Receptors Based Upon Chalcogen, Pnicogen, And Tetrel Bonds, Steve Scheiner Oct 2016

Highly Selective Halide Receptors Based Upon Chalcogen, Pnicogen, And Tetrel Bonds, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The interactions of halides with a number of bipodal receptors are examined via quantum chemical methods. The receptors are based upon a dithieno thiophene framework in which two S atoms can engage in a pair of chalcogen bonds with a halide. These two S atoms are replaced by P and As atoms to compare chalcogen with pnicogen bonding, and by Ge which engages in tetrel bonds with the receptor. Zero, one, and two O atoms are added to the thiophene S atom which is not directly involved in the interaction with the halides. Fluoride is bound the most strongly, followed …

Thermophysical Properties And Conduction Mechanisms In Asxse1-X Chalcogenide Glasses Ranging From X = 0.2 To 0.5, Jason Lonergan, Charmayne Smith (Lonergan), Devon Mcclane, Kathleen Richardson Oct 2016

Thermophysical Properties And Conduction Mechanisms In Asxse1-X Chalcogenide Glasses Ranging From X = 0.2 To 0.5, Jason Lonergan, Charmayne Smith (Lonergan), Devon Mcclane, Kathleen Richardson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The arsenic (As) to selenium (Se) ratio in AsxSe1-x glasses ranging from x = 0.2 to 0.5 was varied in order to examine the effect of chemical and topological ordering on the glass' thermal transport behavior. The fundamental thermal properties of glass transition temperature (Tg), thermal conductivity (k), and heat capacity (cp) were experimentally measured using differential scanning calorimetry, transient plane source method, and ultrasonic testing. Based on topological constraint theory, inflections in Tg and k were found at the structural coordination number «r» of 2.4, whereas a slight increase in heat …
