Curiosité: Inquiry-Based Instruction And Bilingual Learning, Cheryl Bowen (Mcelvain), Heidi A. Smith Oct 2016

Curiosité: Inquiry-Based Instruction And Bilingual Learning, Cheryl Bowen (Mcelvain), Heidi A. Smith

Teacher Education

The issues that prompt this study are based on current research indicating the positive effects of inquiry learning onthe cognitive development of children. The purpose of this case study was to understand the effects of inquirylearning on the academic achievement and bilingual verbal ability of 5th grade bilingual students in a French/Englishdual immersion program. The treatment group of students completed research projects through a guided inquirylearning approach, while the control group experienced the traditional problem solving research approach. Initialfindings report a significant mean increase in mathematical reasoning, bilingual verbal ability, higher motivation tolearn, and increased self-efficacy in the treatment versus …

Symmetric Integer Matrices Having Integer Eigenvalues, Lei Cao, Selcuk Koyuncu Oct 2016

Symmetric Integer Matrices Having Integer Eigenvalues, Lei Cao, Selcuk Koyuncu

Mathematics Faculty Articles

We provide characterization of symmetric integer matrices for rank at most 2 that have integer spectrum and give some constructions for such matrices of rank 3. We also make some connection between Hanlon’s conjecture and integer eigenvalue problem.

Validating The Client Focused Considering Work Model For People Living With Hiv, Liza M. Conyers, K B. Boomer Oct 2016

Validating The Client Focused Considering Work Model For People Living With Hiv, Liza M. Conyers, K B. Boomer

Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations

The primary purpose of this study was to validate the Client-Focused Considering Work Model and to gain a better understanding of the nature of the relationship among the four domains purported to influence the considering work process (medical, psychosocial, financial/legal, and vocational). A second goal of the study was to quantify the relationship between these four domains and the phases of considering work (contemplation, preparation, action, resolution).

Structure For Regular Inclusions. I, David R. Pitts Oct 2016

Structure For Regular Inclusions. I, David R. Pitts

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We give general structure theory for pairs (C,D) of unital C*- algebras where D is a regular and abelian C*-subalgebra of C.

When D is maximal abelian in C, we prove existence and uniqueness of a completely positive unital map E of C into the injective envelope I(D) of D such that EjD = idD; E is a useful replacement for a conditional expectation when no expectation exists. When E is faithful, (C,D) has numerous desirable properties: e.g. the linear span of the normalizers has a unique minimal C*- norm; D norms C; and isometric isomorphisms of norm-closed subalgebras lying …

Secure Mobile Applications Based On Ntru, Vikram Hegde, Hanqing Zhao, Kefeng Shi, Yi Yang

ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

Modern mobile devices have an urgent need for a new-generation public-key cryptographic system. This system should provide sufficient security for mobile devices without degrading performance due to their limited resources. NTRU is a decent model for this. We validate it through experimental studies and apply NTRU to protect a peer-to-peer communication app.
