Setting A Standard For Chemistry Education In The Next Generation: A Retrosynthetic Analysis, Gregory T. Rushton, Andrew Dewar, Herman E. Ray, Brett A. Criswell, Lisa Shah

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education Faculty Publications

A diverse and highly qualified chemistry teaching workforce is critical for preparing equally diverse, qualified STEM professionals. Here, we analyze National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS) data to provide a demographic comparison of the U.S. secondary chemistry teaching population in high-needs and non-high-needs public schools as well as private schools during the 2011–2012 academic year. Our analysis reveals that the chemistry teaching workforce is predominantly white and significantly lacks in-field degrees or certification across school types, though high-needs and private schools are most affected by this lack of teacher qualification. Given these results, we attempt …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Quantifying fluxes of trace elements and their isotopes (TEIs) at the ocean's sediment-water boundary is a pre-eminent challenge to understand their role in the present, past and future ocean. There are multiple processes that drive the uptake and release of TEIs, and properties that determine their rates are unevenly distributed (e.g. sediment composition, redox conditions and (bio)physical dynamics). These factors complicate our efforts to find, measure and extrapolate TEI fluxes across ocean basins. GEOTRACES observations are unveiling the oceanic distributions of many TEIs for the first time. These data evidence the influence of the sediment-water boundary on many TEI cycles, …

Exploiting Metacognitive Networks Embedded In Narrative Focus Group Interviews Using Nodexl, Divan Jagals, Marthie Sophia Van Der Walt

The Qualitative Report

Development of metacognitive theory for changing pedagogy remains an essential research activity. A lack of sufficient clear-cut qualitative analysis procedures extracting embedded metacognitive constructs from qualitative data (e.g., narrative focus group interviews) can hinder development of theory. An approach is therefore needed to analyse qualitative metacognitive data exploiting embedded metacognitive constructs for theory development. In an undergraduate fourth-year mathematics education module, two groups of students (Group A: n = 6; Group B: n = 5) participated in a series of focus group interviews. Participants designed and refined mathematics lessons about the concept of place value. We identified metacognitive networks as …

The Relationship Between Utilization Of The Elsevier Online Remediation Tool And The Hesi Exit Exam For Student Nurses Preparing For The Nclex-Rn, Judith Egan Oct 2016

The Relationship Between Utilization Of The Elsevier Online Remediation Tool And The Hesi Exit Exam For Student Nurses Preparing For The Nclex-Rn, Judith Egan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Nursing schools are operating at full capacity in order to address an impending shortage of registered nurses that may exceed 500,000 by the year 2025. This pressure on scarce resources elevates the importance of NCLEX-RN preparedness for nursing faculty, nursing students, and the public at large. Additionally, the ability to successfully prepare students to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam can affect the reputation of nursing programs throughout the United States. Nursing schools frequently utilize commercially prepared standardized exams to assess student readiness and identify students in need of remediation. The HESI E2 Exit Exam distributed by Elsevier is one such …

Complementary Weak-Value Amplification With Concatenated Postselections, Gerardo I. Viza, Julián Martínez-Rincón, Wei-Tao Liu, John C. Howell Oct 2016

Complementary Weak-Value Amplification With Concatenated Postselections, Gerardo I. Viza, Julián Martínez-Rincón, Wei-Tao Liu, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We measure a transverse momentum kick in a Sagnac interferometer using weak-value amplification with two postselections. The first postselection is controlled by a polarization-dependent phase mismatch between both paths of the interferometer, and the second postselection is controlled by a polarizer at the exit port. By monitoring the dark port of the interferometer, we study the complementary amplification of the concatenated postselections, where the polarization extinction ratio is greater than the contrast of the spatial interference. In this case, we find an improvement in the amplification of the signal of interest by introducing a second postselection to the system.
