The Consistent Behavior Of Tropical Rain: Average Reflectivity Vertical Profiles Determined By Rain Top Height, Reuven H. Heiblum, Ilan Koren, Orit Altaratz, Alexander Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

Sixteen years of Tropical Rain Measuring Mission (TRMM) reflectivity profile data are collected for oceanic, continental, and island tropical regions within the boreal winter intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). When sorted by the rain top height (RTH), a consistent behavior emerges where the average reflectivity profiles originating at different RTHs form non-overlapping manifolds in the height–reflectivity space, excluding the brightband regions for stratiform type profiles. Based on reflectivity slope (dBZ km−1) profile characteristics and physical considerations, the profiles are divided into three classes: 1) cold profiles, which originate above the −20°C isotherm height and display convergence to a …

Gene-by-environment (GxE) interactions determine common disease risk factors and biomedically relevant complex traits. However, quantifying how the environment modulates genetic effects on human quantitative phenotypes presents unique challenges. Environmental covariates are complex and difficult to measure and control at the organismal level, as found in GWAS and epidemiological studies. An alternative approach focuses on the cellular environment using in vitro treatments as a proxy for the organismal environment. These cellular environments simplify the organism-level environmental exposures to provide a tractable influence on subcellular phenotypes, such as gene expression. Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping studies identified GxE interactions in response …

Galaxies grow through both internal and external processes. In about 10% of nearby red galaxies with little star formation, gas and stars are counter-rotating, demonstrating the importance of external gas acquisition in these galaxies. However, systematic studies of such phenomena in blue, star-forming galaxies are rare, leaving uncertain the role of external gas acquisition in driving evolution of blue galaxies. Here, based on new measurements with integral field spectroscopy of a large representative galaxy sample, we find an appreciable fraction of counter-rotators among blue galaxies (9 out of 489 galaxies). The central regions of blue counter-rotators show younger stellar populations …

Abundance Of Archaias Angulatus On The West Florida Coast Indicates The Influence Of Carbonate Alkalinity Over Salinity, Sean Thomas Beckwith Oct 2016

Abundance Of Archaias Angulatus On The West Florida Coast Indicates The Influence Of Carbonate Alkalinity Over Salinity, Sean Thomas Beckwith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Archaias angulatus, a large symbiont-bearing foraminifer (Order Miliolida) that produces a Mg-calcite shell, is common throughout the Caribbean and warm western Atlantic region. This species lives abundantly in seagrass beds along the Springs Coast of northwest Florida (up to 4 adults per gram of sediment) where spring-fed rivers emerge from a limestone aquifer, and in Florida Bay to the southeast (25 adults/g) where the sediment is primarily biogenic carbonate. In contrast, live specimens are seldom found in the seagrass beds along the central-west coast of Florida, where barrier islands are dominated by quartz sand. My working hypothesis is that substratum …

Parallelization Of Push-Based System For Molecular Simulation Data Analysis With Gpu, Iliiazbek Akhmedov Oct 2016

Parallelization Of Push-Based System For Molecular Simulation Data Analysis With Gpu, Iliiazbek Akhmedov

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modern simulation systems generate big amount of data, which consequently has to be analyzed in a timely fashion. Traditional database management systems follow principle of pulling the needed data, processing it, and then returning the results. This approach is then optimized by means of caching, storing in different structures, or doing some sacrifices on precision of the results to make it faster. When it comes to the point of doing various queries that require analysis of the whole data, this design has the following disadvantages: considerable overhead on traditional disk random I/O framework while reading from the simulation output files …

Connecting Program Synthesis And Reachability: Automatic Program Repair Using Test-Input Generation, Thanhvu Nguyen, Westley Weimer, Deepak Kapur, Stephanie Forrest Oct 2016

Connecting Program Synthesis And Reachability: Automatic Program Repair Using Test-Input Generation, Thanhvu Nguyen, Westley Weimer, Deepak Kapur, Stephanie Forrest

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We prove that certain formulations of program synthesis and reachability are equivalent. Specifically, our constructive proof shows the reductions between the template-based synthesis problem, which generates a program in a pre-specified form, and the reachability problem, which decides the reachability of a program location. This establishes a link between the two research fields and allows for the transfer of techniques and results between them.

To demonstrate the equivalence, we develop a program repair prototype using reachability tools. We transform a buggy program and its required specification into a specific program containing a location reachable only when the original program can …

Spatial Population Models With Fitness Based Dispersal, Chris Cosner Oct 2016

Spatial Population Models With Fitness Based Dispersal, Chris Cosner

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Traditional continuous time models in spatial ecology typically describe movement in terms of linear diffusion and advection, which combine with nonlinear population dynamics to produce semi-linear parabolic equations and systems. In environments that are favorable everywhere in the sense that the local population growth rate is always positive, organisms can use linear advection and diffusion to achieve an optimal spatial distribution. (Here optimal means evolutionarily stable.) In regions where there are environmental “sinks” where the local growth rate is negative, it does not seem possible to achieve an optimal distribution via linear dispersal. It is possible for organisms using advection …

A Discourse On Diversity: The Impact Of Management Team Heterogeneity On Firm Performance., Robert J. Brown Oct 2016

A Discourse On Diversity: The Impact Of Management Team Heterogeneity On Firm Performance., Robert J. Brown

Undergraduate Economic Review

Quantile models are used to test the association between management team gender, ethnic and educational diversity and firm performance, employing an IV technique developed by Chernozhukov and Hansen (2008) to address the potential endogeneity issues. Estimated associations between measures of diversity and firm EBITDA margins are close to zero across much of the dependent variable distribution, but increase in magnitude for higher margin firms. No evidence of a statistically significant causal relationship between gender and ethnic diversity and firm EBITDA margins is found. Marginal evidence of a statistically significant association between margins and educational diversity is found for high margin …

A Model-Based Sensor Database For Internet Of Things, Parul Maheshwari Oct 2016

A Model-Based Sensor Database For Internet Of Things, Parul Maheshwari

Open Access Theses

The Internet of Things (IoTs) is becoming ubiquitous in our everyday lives, implying that more technologies will generate data. IoT devices use sensors to monitor various attributes of the environment such as temperature, humidity, light, etc. These sensors produce data periodically and storing this massive data in a database is becoming a huge challenge in the data storage infrastructure. Prior research has proposed compression algorithms and signature techniques to reduce data storage but do not specify how the data patterns are defined. Since similar patterns are exhibited everyday by the environment, this data generates the same information from everyday sensing. …

Online Cross-Validation-Based Ensemble Learning, David Benkeser, Samuel D. Lendle, Cheng Ju, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Online estimators update a current estimate with a new incoming batch of data without having to revisit past data thereby providing streaming estimates that are scalable to big data. We develop flexible, ensemble-based online estimators of an infinite-dimensional target parameter, such as a regression function, in the setting where data are generated sequentially by a common conditional data distribution given summary measures of the past. This setting encompasses a wide range of time-series models and as special case, models for independent and identically distributed data. Our estimator considers a large library of candidate online estimators and uses online cross-validation to …

Doubly-Robust Nonparametric Inference On The Average Treatment Effect, David Benkeser, Marco Carone, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Peter Gilbert Oct 2016

Doubly-Robust Nonparametric Inference On The Average Treatment Effect, David Benkeser, Marco Carone, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Peter Gilbert

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Doubly-robust estimators are widely used to draw inference about the average effect of a treatment. Such estimators are consistent for the effect of interest if either one of two nuisance parameters is consistently estimated. However, if flexible, data-adaptive estimators of these nuisance parameters are used, double-robustness does not readily extend to inference. We present a general theoretical study of the behavior of doubly-robust estimators of an average treatment effect when one of the nuisance parameters is inconsistently estimated. We contrast different approaches for constructing such estimators and investigate the extent to which they may be modified to also allow doubly-robust …

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The scientific endeavors of the Observatorio Meteorológico de Manila in the nineteenth century brought about major changes in colonial science in the Philippines. The observatory pioneered the modern study of weather, climate, and natural hazards through the use of instruments and apparatus it invented and produced. Thisarticle explores how, through its programs and projects, the observatory operationalized colonial science, particularly meteorology, to promote a new understanding of weather and natural phenomena and create new avenues for public engagement. Keywords: Observatorio de Manila • colonial science • Jesuits • meteorology • meteorological instruments

Anti-Nogo-A Immunotherapy Does Not Alter Hippocampal Neurogenesis After Stroke In Adult Rats, Timothy O'Brien, Daniel Shepherd, Gwendolyn Kartje-Tillotson, Shih-Yen Tsai, Robert G. Farrer Oct 2016

Anti-Nogo-A Immunotherapy Does Not Alter Hippocampal Neurogenesis After Stroke In Adult Rats, Timothy O'Brien, Daniel Shepherd, Gwendolyn Kartje-Tillotson, Shih-Yen Tsai, Robert G. Farrer

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of adult disability, including cognitive impairment. Our laboratory has previously shown that treatment with function-blocking antibodies against the neurite growth inhibitory protein Nogo-A promotes functional recovery after stroke in adult and aged rats, including enhancing spatial memory performance, for which the hippocampus is critically important. Since spatial memory has been linked to hippocampal neurogenesis, we investigated whether anti-Nogo-A treatment increases hippocampal neurogenesis after stroke. Adult rats were subject to permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion followed 1 week later by 2 weeks of antibody treatment. Cellular proliferation in the dentate gyrus was quantified at the …

Protocol Guided Trace Analysis For Post-Silicon Debug Under Limited Observability, Yuting Cao Cao Oct 2016

Protocol Guided Trace Analysis For Post-Silicon Debug Under Limited Observability, Yuting Cao Cao

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis considers the problem of reconstructing system level behavior of an SoC design from a partially observed signal trace. Solving this problem is a critical activity in post-silicon validation, and currently depends primarily on human creativity and insights. In this thesis, we provide algorithms to automatically infer system level flows from incomplete, ambiguous, and noisy trace data. This thesis also demonstrates the approach on two case studies, a multicore SoC model developed within the within the GEM5 environment, and a cycle accurate register transfer level model of a similar SoC design.

Locality, Bulk Equations Of Motion And The Conformal Bootstrap, Daniel N. Kabat, Gilad Lifsch Oct 2016

Locality, Bulk Equations Of Motion And The Conformal Bootstrap, Daniel N. Kabat, Gilad Lifsch

Publications and Research

We develop an approach to construct local bulk operators in a CFT to order 1/N2. Since 4-point functions are not fixed by conformal invariance we use the OPE to categorize possible forms for a bulk operator. Using previous results on 3-point functions we construct a local bulk operator in each OPE channel. We then impose the condition that the bulk operators constructed in different channels agree, and hence give rise to a well-defined bulk operator. We refer to this condition as the “bulk bootstrap.” We argue and explicitly show in some examples that the bulk bootstrap leads to some of …

Sources, Distributions And Dynamics Of Dissolved Organic Matter In The Canada And Makarov Basins, Yuan Shen, Ronald Benner, Lisa L. Robbins, Jonathan G. Wynn

Faculty Publications

A comprehensive survey of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) was conducted in the Canada and Makarov Basins and adjacent seas during 2010–2012 to investigate the dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Arctic Ocean. Sources and distributions of DOM in polar surface waters were very heterogeneous and closely linked to hydrological conditions. Canada Basin surface waters had relatively low DOC concentrations (69 ± 6 μmol L−1), CDOM absorption (a325: 0.32 ± 0.07 m−1) and CDOM-derived lignin phenols (3 ± 0.4 nmol L−1), and high spectral slope values (S275–295: 31.7 ± …
