Intermittency Of Gravity Wave Momentum Flux In The Mesopause Region Observed With An All-Sky Airglow Imager, Bing Cao, Alan Z. Liu Jan 2016

Intermittency Of Gravity Wave Momentum Flux In The Mesopause Region Observed With An All-Sky Airglow Imager, Bing Cao, Alan Z. Liu

Publications

The intermittency of gravity wave momentum flux (MF) near the OH airglow layer (∼87 km) in the mesopause region is investigated for the first time using observation of all-sky airglow imager over Maui, Hawaii (20.7∘N, 156.3∘W), and Cerro Pachón, Chile (30.3∘S, 70.7∘W). At both sites, the probability density function (pdf) of gravity wave MF shows two distinct distributions depending on the magnitude of the MF. For MF smaller (larger) than ∼16 m2 s−2 (0.091 mPa), the pdf follows a lognormal (power law) distribution. The intermittency represented by the Bernoulli proxy and the percentile ratio shows that gravity waves have higher …

Chemical Transport Of Neutral Atmospheric Constituents By Waves And Turbulence: Theory And Observations, Chester S. Gardner, Alan Liu Jan 2016

Chemical Transport Of Neutral Atmospheric Constituents By Waves And Turbulence: Theory And Observations, Chester S. Gardner, Alan Liu

Publications

Vertical chemical transport occurs when the density fluctuations of a species, caused by perturbations of its chemistry, are strongly correlated with the vertical wind fluctuations. Chemical transport can exceed dynamical and eddy transport of chemically active species. Theoretical expressions are derived for the chemical fluxes and transport velocities and used to characterize the vertical transport of mesospheric O3 and meteoric Na and Fe between 85 and 100 km. Chemical transport is dependent on the intrinsic frequency spectrum of the temperature fluctuations and on the chemical cutoff periods of the species. For O3 only high-frequency fluctuations contribute to chemical transport because …

First Measurement Of Horizontal Wind And Temperature In The Lower Thermosphere (105–140 Km) With A Na Lidar At Andes Lidar Observatory, Alan Liu, Yafang Guo, Fabia A. Vargas, Gary Swenson,

Publications

We report the first measurement of nighttime atmospheric temperature and horizontal wind profiles in the lower thermosphere up to 140 km with the Na lidar at Andes Lidar Observatory in Cerro Pachón, Chile (30.25°S, 70.74°W), when enhanced thermospheric Na was observed. Temperature and horizontal wind were derived up to 140 km using various resolutions, with the lowest resolution of about 2.7 hr and 15 km above 130 km. Thus, the measurements span 60 km in vertical, more than double the traditional 25 km. On the night of 17 April 2015, the horizontal wind magnitude in the thermosphere exceeds 150 ms−1, …

Southern Hemisphere Summer Mesopause Responses To El Niño–Southern Oscillation, Tao Li, Natalia Calvo, Jia Yue, James Russell Iii, Alan Liu Jan 2016

Southern Hemisphere Summer Mesopause Responses To El Niño–Southern Oscillation, Tao Li, Natalia Calvo, Jia Yue, James Russell Iii, Alan Liu

Publications

In the Southern Hemisphere (SH) polar region, satellite observations reveal a significant uppermesosphere cooling and a lower-thermosphere warming during warm ENSO events in December. An opposite pattern is observed in the tropical mesopause region. The observed upper-mesosphere cooling agrees with a climate model simulation. Analysis of the simulation suggests that enhanced planetary wave (PW) dissipation in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) high-latitude stratosphere during El Niño strengthens the Brewer–Dobson circulation and cools the equatorial stratosphere. This increases the magnitude of the SH stratosphere meridional temperature gradient and thus causes the anomalous stratospheric easterly zonal wind and early breakdown of the SH …

Evidence Of The Excitation Of A Ring-Like Gravity Wave In The Mesosphere Over The Andes Lidar Observatory, Fabio Vargas, Gary Swenson,, Alan Liu, Dominique Pautet Jan 2016

Evidence Of The Excitation Of A Ring-Like Gravity Wave In The Mesosphere Over The Andes Lidar Observatory, Fabio Vargas, Gary Swenson,, Alan Liu, Dominique Pautet

Publications

On 23 March 2012, our all-sky imager recorded a concentric, ring-like gravity wave pattern. The wave arose within the area covered by images of both OH and O(1S) nightglow emissions taken at the Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO), Chile (30.3°S, 70.7°W). We have estimated the observed and intrinsic parameters of the event and located the wave source within the lower mesosphere altitude range using a reverse ray tracing method. By the analysis of GOES and LIS satellite images, we have not found evidence of neither convective nor lightning activity nearby ALO, indicating that the source of the ring-like wave …

Learning Path Adaptivity In Support Of Flipped Learning: A Knowledge-Based Approach, Yu Liang Chi, Tsang Yao Chen Jan 2016

Learning Path Adaptivity In Support Of Flipped Learning: A Knowledge-Based Approach, Yu Liang Chi, Tsang Yao Chen

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Flipped learning inverts the two learning spaces of traditional education: the classroom group learning space and the homework individual learning space. In flipped learning, learners are exposed to direct instruction for basic knowledge acquisition before coming to the classroom for active learning with the teacher and peers. In recent years, flipped learning has received vast attention from educational practitioners and researchers. However, this study argues that existing e-learning systems mainly serve for learning management and content delivery purposes and lack support for flipped learning. As an innovative educational approach, flipped learning needs more pedagogical elements such as integrated instructional design …

Object Pooling For Multimedia Event Detection And Evidence Localization, Ho Zhang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Chong-Wah Ngo Jan 2016

Object Pooling For Multimedia Event Detection And Evidence Localization, Ho Zhang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimedia event detection (MED) and evidence hunting are two primary topics in the area of multimedia event search. The former serves to retrieve a list of relevant videos given an event query, whereas, the latter reasons why and how much the degree a retrieved video answers that query. Common practices deal with these two topics in separate methods, however, in this paper, we combine MED and evidence hunting into a joint framework. We propose a refined semantical representation named object pooling which can dynamically extract visual snippets corresponding to the location of when and where evidences might appear. The main …

Single Particle-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry Technology Development For Metallic Nanoparticle Characterization In Complex Matrices, Yongbo Dan Jan 2016

Single Particle-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry Technology Development For Metallic Nanoparticle Characterization In Complex Matrices, Yongbo Dan

Doctoral Dissertations

"As the rapid growing of nanotechnology, the release of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment is inevitable. After entering the real environment, ENPs tend to react with different components of the ecosystem (e.g. water, soil, air, plants) and make their characterization difficult. Analyzing ENPs in these complex matrices still remains as a grand challenge. ENPs characterization is normally the first step of risk assessment. Current analytical techniques have shown some limitations in revealing the unique characteristics of ENPs in complex matrices and reliable analytical techniques are in urgent need. Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is an emerging …

Teacher Noticing Of Justification: Attending To The Complexity Of Mathematical Content And Practice, Kathleen Mary Melhuish, Eva Thanheiser, Jodi I. Fasteen, Julie Fredericks Jan 2016

Teacher Noticing Of Justification: Attending To The Complexity Of Mathematical Content And Practice, Kathleen Mary Melhuish, Eva Thanheiser, Jodi I. Fasteen, Julie Fredericks

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this report, we will consider in-service elementary school teachers' noticing of the mathematical practice: justification. This study is part of a larger project evaluating the efficacy of a three year professional development built around attending to student thinking and promoting mathematical habits of justifying, generalizing and making sense. Noticing just¢cation is a complex task requiring attention to both the (1) mathematical content and strategies and (2) the nature of the argument provided by a student. We have found that teachers' struggle to attend to both aspects simultaneously and offer a framework for considering teacher noticing of mathematical practices.

© 2016 The Authors. The value of big data comes from its variety where data is collected from various sources. One of the key big data challenges is identifying which data objects are relevant or refer to the same logical entity across various data sources. This challenge is traditionally known as schema matching. Due to big data velocity traditional approaches to data matching can no longer be used. In this paper we present an approach for inferring data objects correlation. We present our algorithm that relies on the objects meta-data and it consults the Word Net thesaurus.

We have previously proposed the concept of Mobile …

Impacts Of Recreational Aviation On Wildlife: The Physiological Stress Response In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) And Associated User Perceptions, Devin W. Landry Jan 2016

Impacts Of Recreational Aviation On Wildlife: The Physiological Stress Response In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) And Associated User Perceptions, Devin W. Landry

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Recreational aviation on public lands may negatively impact wildlife. However, land-use decisions need to balance user need with wildlife impact. We know very little about 1) how back country airstrip use affects local wildlife, or 2) attitudes and perceptions of recreational pilots toward possible management actions. For my Master’s research, I investigated how aircraft activity influenced physiological measures of stress in white-tailed deer, while also modeling how psychometrics such as wildlife attitudes and place attachment predict the willingness of recreational pilots engage in impact-mitigating behaviors. I measured physiological stress through non-invasive sampling of stress hormones in fecal samples (fecal glucocorticoid …

Point Spread Function Estimation And Uncertainty Quantification, Kevin Thomas Joyce Jan 2016

Point Spread Function Estimation And Uncertainty Quantification, Kevin Thomas Joyce

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

An important component of analyzing images quantitatively is modeling image blur due to effects from the system for image capture. When the effect of image blur is assumed to be translation invariant and isotropic, it can be generally modeled as convolution with a radially symmetric kernel, called the point spread function (PSF). Standard techniques for estimating the PSF involve imaging a bright point source, but this is not always feasible (e.g. high energy radiography). This work provides a novel non-parametric approach to estimating the PSF from a calibration image of a vertical edge. Moreover, the approach is within a hierarchical …

Forecasting Internal Temperature In A Home With A Sensor Network, Bruce Spencer, Omar Alfandi Jan 2016

Forecasting Internal Temperature In A Home With A Sensor Network, Bruce Spencer, Omar Alfandi

All Works

© 2016 The Authors. We forecast internal temperature in a home with sensors, modeled as a linear function of recent sensor values. The Smart∗Project provides publicly available data from an inhabited home over a three month period, reporting on 38 sensors including environmental readings, circuit loads, motion detectors, and switches controlling lights and fans. We select 13 of these sensors that have some influence on the internal temperature, and create forecasts that are accurate to within about 1.6°F (0.9°C) over the next six hours. Temperature prediction is important for saving energy while maintaining comfortable conditions in the home.

Forensic Investigation Of Cyberstalking Cases Using Behavioural Evidence Analysis, Noora Al Mutawa, Joanne Bryce, Virginia N.L. Franqueira, Andrew Marrington

All Works

Behavioural Evidence Analysis (BEA) is, in theory, useful in developing an understanding of the offender, the victim, the crime scene, and the dynamics of the crime. It can add meaning to the evidence obtained through digital forensic techniques and assist investigators with reconstruction of a crime. There is, however, little empirical research examining the application of BEA to actual criminal cases, particularly cyberstalking cases. This study addresses this gap by examining the utility of BEA for such cases in terms of understanding the behavioural and motivational dimensions of offending, and the way in which digital evidence can be interpreted. It …

Arts Integrated Elementary School Classrooms And Academic Success, Rachel Fackler Jan 2016

Arts Integrated Elementary School Classrooms And Academic Success, Rachel Fackler

University Honors Theses

To support academic achievement, schools must consider an arts integrated approach to lecture based learning. However, teachers, especially those from lower funded schools, who want to integrate the arts into their classrooms often have to fight and defend their reasoning for doing so. With standardized test scores often being the "end all be all" to how schools are funded and supported, arts education has been some of the first variables to be cut from schools and school districts. This is a failure to the students who need a multi-sensory approach to learning that only art can provide. Activities that activate …

Convex And Nonconvex Optimization Techniques For The Constrained Fermat-Torricelli Problem, Nathan Lawrence Jan 2016

Convex And Nonconvex Optimization Techniques For The Constrained Fermat-Torricelli Problem, Nathan Lawrence

University Honors Theses

The Fermat-Torricelli problem asks for a point that minimizes the sum of the distances to three given points in the plane. This problem was introduced by the French mathematician Fermat in the 17th century and was solved by the Italian mathematician and physicist Torricelli. In this thesis we introduce a constrained version of the Fermat-Torricelli problem in high dimensions that involves distances to a finite number of points with both positive and negative weights. Based on the distance penalty method, Nesterov’s smoothing technique, and optimization techniques for minimizing differences of convex functions, we provide effective algorithms to solve the problem. …

We evaluated the effects of land use and cover on endemic blackfin sucker (Thoburnia atripinnis) catch per unit effort and abundance within the Upper Barren River (UBR) system, a priority conservation area, in south-central Kentucky. Anthropogenic impacts have rendered T. atripinnis a “species of greatest conservation need” by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. This study focused on determining if land use surrounding blackfin sucker sampling sites and certain physicochemical parameters could be impacting their inhabitance at these sites. Data collection and ground truthing occurred between September 2015 and June 2016. ArcGIS was used to extract land use …

Impact Of Instructional Coaches On Elementary Mathematical Achievement, Kayla Marie Hibbard Jan 2016

Impact Of Instructional Coaches On Elementary Mathematical Achievement, Kayla Marie Hibbard

Online Theses and Dissertations

Since the passage of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, school leaders have sought to improve student abilities in both math and reading. Although both subjects have made improvements in both delivery and assessment over the years, mathematics still troubles the nation as students continuously fall short of local, state and federal goals (Darling-Hammond, 1998, 2005; Franke et al., 2005; Johnson & Johnson, 2002).

Instructional coaches have become a norm for many districts across the U. S. as districts seek to draw knowledge and leadership from mastery level teachers as they help improve everyday teaching and student learning. …

Developmental Education: Resilience And Academic Success In Rural Appalachian Students, Sandy Holbrook

Online Theses and Dissertations

The need for developmental education is ever present in higher education as more students annually enter college underprepared for entry level college coursework. Underpreparedness is a pervasive concern in higher education. Community colleges in particular are the primary means of shepherding developmental education. Academic underpreparedness is just one of the many obstacles students face, however, when endeavoring to obtain a college education. Students often have additional challenges such as those frequently accompanying first-generation college status, rural status, low socioeconomic levels, low levels of self-efficacy, and the lack of resilience which can pose threats to their academic success. Despite these adverse …

The target population was rural Appalachian teachers that worked for a principal that had been in administration for at least three consecutive years. This study utilized teacher responses from a survey consisting of the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES, Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk-Hoy, 2001) and the Leadership Practice Inventory – observer (LPI, Kouzes & Posner, 2003).

Results from the survey categorized levels of self-efficacy for teachers based on the works of Tschannen-Moran and Woolfolk-Hoy …

School Accountability Grades: The Influence Of Student And School Characteristics, Tara Isaacs Jan 2016

School Accountability Grades: The Influence Of Student And School Characteristics, Tara Isaacs

Online Theses and Dissertations

In the United States of America, several states passed legislation that enacted a grading system by which schools are measured for their performance through a formalized ranking system, which deem schools a success or failure. These accountability systems are developed by legislators and policymakers in order to fulfill federal requirements like the No Child Left Behind Act (No Child Left Behind [NCLB], 2002) and the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015), to encourage systemic improvement across states. In reporting annual school performance for the state of Utah, for example, it is necessary to investigate to what extent student and school characteristics …
