Review Of Years 9 To 12 Tasmania : Final Report, Geoff N. Masters, Kathryn Moyle, Sheldon Rothman, Hilary Hollingsworth, Bill Perrett, Paul R. Weldon, Kate Perkins, Justin Brown, Ali Radloff, Patricia Freeman, Sofi Damianidis

Program monitoring and evaluation

The Tasmanian Government is currently implementing significant reforms to improve students’ retention and attainment in Tasmania’s schools. There is a concern in the Tasmanian community however, that their students’ performances are among the lowest in the nation. Reasons nominated for these results include weak literacy and numeracy levels; low attendance rates; high anxiety around transitions between Year 10 and Year 11 by some students, especially among those living outside of the larger cities; students seeking alternative education options; and family, financial, health and carer based issues. It is against this backdrop that the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) was …

Probing Quantumness With Joint Continuous Measurements Of Non-Commuting Observables, Luis Pedro García-Pintos, Justin Dressel Dec 2016

Probing Quantumness With Joint Continuous Measurements Of Non-Commuting Observables, Luis Pedro García-Pintos, Justin Dressel

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We analyze the continuous measurement of two noncommuting observables for a qubit, and investigate whether the simultaneously observed noisy signals are consistent with the evolution of an equivalent classical system. Following the approach outlined by Leggett and Garg, we show that the readouts violate macrorealistic inequalities for arbitrarily short temporal correlations. Moreover, the derived inequalities are manifestly violated even in the absence of Hamiltonian evolution, unlike for Leggett-Garg inequalities that use a single continuous measurement. Such a violation should indicate the failure of at least one postulate of macrorealism: either physical quantities do not have well-defined values at all times …

Lipid-Based Self-Assembled Nps: The Effects Of Morphology And Targeting Molecules On The Cellular Uptake Using In Vitro Tumor Model, Wafa Aresh

Doctoral Dissertations

While the usage of nanoscale materials for therapeutics and diagnostics is growing rapidly, there remain many challenges to understanding the expected controlling parameters (e.g., size, shape and chemical properties) that significantly affect the performance of the nanomaterials due to complicated in vivo environments. Therefore, a strong interest in the knowledge of the nano–biointeractions and how they contribute to tissue accumulation has been developed. To date, researchers have relied on monolayer cell cultures and animal models to study such nano–biointeractions. However, currently, there is a big gap between the result of the over-simplified in vitro cell response and the complex animal …

Pricing Airline Optional Services, Stavros Macrakis, Michael Leen, Daniel Burkhard Dec 2016

Pricing Airline Optional Services, Stavros Macrakis, Michael Leen, Daniel Burkhard

Defensive Publications Series

A pricing system receives a request for a price of one or more optional services for a flight. The pricing system determines, for each ATPCO S5 record (“S5 record”) associated with each corresponding requested optional service, whether the S5 record comprises a formula table. If the pricing system determines that the S5 record does not comprise a formula table, the pricing system identifies ATPCO S7 records (“S7 record”) associated with the S5 record and sequentially evaluates pricing conditions stipulated by each of the S7 records until finding a first S7 record comprising a pricing condition that is satisfied by the …

Development Of A Stream Water Temperature Model As A Component Model For Openmi Based Integrated Modelling Of River Zenne, Belgium., Narayan Kumar Shrestha, Olkeba Tolessa Leta, Jiri Nossent, Ann Van Griensven, Willy Bauwens

Open Water Journal

In 2000, the European Union launched the Water Framework Directive (WFD) (EU, 2000), which calls to achieve a good ecological status of all water bodies by 2015 through integrated river basin management. Integrated models are therefore necessary to serve as tools for river basin management in the scope of the WFD. Despite large investments made for the management of the Brussels’ sewer systems, the Zenne river still receives high loads of pollutants, especially considering the small size of this receiving water body. An interuniversity, multidisciplinary research project ‘Good Ecological Status of the river Zenne (GESZ)’ was therefore launched to evaluate …

State Of R In Hydrological Modelling, J. A. Torres, E. Pebesma

Open Water Journal

Access to clean and safe water is a human right and to grant it under a sustainable development point of view is paramount for well being of the future generations. Therefore, it is important to understand the interaction between the mate- rial flows to coastal waters that are constrained by catchment boundaries and the human activi- ties therein, and those materials that are tied to trade and other trans-boundary processes (e.g. re- sidence time, transport and fate of physical, chemi- cal and microbiological water-quality determinants) and their global implications on preserving the qua- lity of the natural environment.

Advanced Dual Beam Optical Tweezers For Undergraduate Biophysics Research, Brian Daudelin

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Optical tweezing is a modern physics technique which allows us to use the radiation pressure provided from laser beams to trap very small microscopic particles. In the last two decades optical tweezers have been used extensively in biophysics and atomic physics to study the building blocks of our world on the cellular and quantum levels. Our goal is to construct a dual beam optical tweezers for future undergraduate biophysical research. In this thesis we discuss how the construction and assembly of the dual beam optical tweezers is done from start to finish. Construction consisted of assembling a polarization maintaining laser. …

Creating The Perfect Nba Team: A Look At Per And How It Affects Wins, Gregory Hamalian

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Ever since Oakland Athletics’ general manager Billy Beane began applying analytical tools to compose a baseball team, professional sports teams have used advanced metrics to build competitive rosters. We use an exploratory data analysis strategy to find what statistics best predict team wins. Finding that the Player Efficiency Rating (PER) statistic best correlate with wins, we investigate the statistic to find its strengths and weaknesses. We look for ways to improve the statistic and adjust it to better evaluate player effectiveness. We also look for methods to best predict how the PER will change from one season to the next …

Quantifying The Dna Binding Properties Of The Binuclear Ruthenium Complex Λλ-P, Nicholas Bryden Dec 2016

Quantifying The Dna Binding Properties Of The Binuclear Ruthenium Complex Λλ-P, Nicholas Bryden

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Threading intercalators are small molecules that bind to DNA by threading their side chains through the DNA bases to intercalate their middle planar section between the DNA base pairs. The high binding affinity and slow dissociation rates of threading intercalators have put them in the class of prospective anti-cancer drugs. In this study we explore the binding of a specific threading intercalator, a binuclear ruthenium complex ΛΛ-P (ΛΛ-[μ-bidppz(phen)4Ru2]4+) using optical tweezers. A single DNA molecule is held at a constant force and the small molecules are introduced to the system in various concentrations until equilibrium is achieved. Measurements of DNA …

A first measurement of the top quark mass in the decay channel t → (W → ℓν) (b → J/ψ + X → μ+μ− + X) is presented. The analysis uses events selected from the proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1, with 666 t t ¯ and single top quark candidate events containing a reconstructed J/ψ candidate decaying into an oppositely-charged muon pair. The mass of the (J/ψ + ℓ) system, where ℓ is an electron or a muon …

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Dysphagia, Yash G. Potdar Dec 2016

Experimental And Numerical Study Of Dysphagia, Yash G. Potdar

Masters Theses

Dysphagia, meaning difficulty in swallowing, is a symptom of disease that occurs in young children and elderly people. It occurs particularly due to two reasons, weak neural network and/or deformities in oral section/s. The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital’s Intensive Feeding Program takes care of children suffering from Dysphagia. In order to make the swallowing process easier and in some cases safer, thickener is added to the liquids. Depending on the requirement of thickness, the amount of thickener is varied. Although the directions to prepare the mixtures are given by the thickener product company, the required thickness is not achieved when …

Strategic Challenges In Stakeholder Networks, Michał Zdziarski, Robert G. Boutilier Dec 2016

Strategic Challenges In Stakeholder Networks, Michał Zdziarski, Robert G. Boutilier

European Management Studies

Shareholders of a company must increasingly share power with other social actors that control access to critical resources. These social actors are stakeholders because they have stakes in firms’ operations, either through being affected by them or through being able to affect them. Stakeholders are embedded in networks of relationships in which resources are shared, combined, exploited or restricted, and informal governance modes emerge. Strategic maneuvering in stakeholder networks is critical for assuring a firm’s access to valuable resources and resulting performance. Managers deciding on the strategic course of a firm embedded in a stakeholder network face multi-dimensional problems with …

Effective Teaching In The Eye Of Teacher Educators: A Case Study In A Higher Education, Melek Çakmak, Ülker Akkutay Dec 2016

Effective Teaching In The Eye Of Teacher Educators: A Case Study In A Higher Education, Melek Çakmak, Ülker Akkutay

The Qualitative Report

Attempts to explore teacher educators’ thoughts seem to be meaningful at educational sciences since the number of studies discussing effective teaching and effective teacher at teacher education in the eye of teacher educators are quite limited. Therefore, this study mainly aims to identify the viewpoints of teacher educators in order to discover how they contextualize the concept of effective teaching. For this aim, a case study design, increasingly used in education (Tellis, 1997), is utilized in the study. This method is suitable when the research addresses an explanatory question such as how or why? (Yin, 2004). A questionnaire including open-ended …

Abstract

Blazars are variable emitters across all wavelengths over a wide range of timescales, from months down to minutes. It is therefore essential to observe blazars simultaneously at different wavelengths, especially in the X-ray and gamma-ray bands, where the broadband spectral energy distributions usually peak. In this work, we report on three "target-of-opportunity" observations of Mrk 421, one of the brightest TeV blazars, triggered by a strong flaring event at TeV energies in 2014. These observations feature long, continuous, and simultaneous exposures with XMM-Newton (covering the X-ray and optical/ultraviolet bands) and VERITAS (covering the TeV gamma-ray band), along with contemporaneous …

Collaboration Between Art Museums And Universities In Hong Kong : Benefits, Difficulties And Methods, Yi Zhu Dec 2016

Collaboration Between Art Museums And Universities In Hong Kong : Benefits, Difficulties And Methods, Yi Zhu

Lingnan Theses

Museums have the responsibility to meet the needs and expectations of audiences with different backgrounds, including families, students, adults and the elderly. However, the needs of higher education students can easily be overlooked in Hong Kong art museums because their age and educational background fall into different target segments. By the late twentieth century, learning opportunities for higher education students, especially those who were majoring in fine arts, art history and museum studies were inadequate in Hong Kong. In view of the increasing arts programmes offered by tertiary institutions in 2000s Hong Kong, art museums play an important role in …

3-D Microwell Array System For Culturing Virus Infected Tumor Cells, Umut A. Gurkan Dec 2016

3-D Microwell Array System For Culturing Virus Infected Tumor Cells, Umut A. Gurkan

Faculty Scholarship

Cancer cells have been increasingly grown in pharmaceutical research to understand tumorigenesis and develop new therapeutic drugs. Currently, cells are typically grown using two-dimensional (2-D) cell culture approaches, where the native tumor microenvironment is difficult to recapitulate. Thus, one of the main obstacles in oncology is the lack of proper infection models that recount main features present in tumors. In recent years, microtechnology-based platforms have been employed to generate three-dimensional (3-D) models that better mimic the native microenvironment in cell culture. Here, we present an innovative approach to culture Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infected human B cells in 3-D using …

The aim of this article is to present the main issues of network research in strategic management in the context of use of social network analysis (SNA). The choice of a theoretical basis for explaining the processes and mechanisms of the network, specification of the type of tested network and the type of relations, as well as determination of the level of network analysis are recognised as the most important problems. In view of …

How To Select Change Agents In Organizations? A Comparison Of The Classical And Network Approaches, Anita Zbieg, Dominik Batorski, Błażej Żak Dec 2016

How To Select Change Agents In Organizations? A Comparison Of The Classical And Network Approaches, Anita Zbieg, Dominik Batorski, Błażej Żak

European Management Studies

The dynamic business environment forces companies to change and adapt constantly. The process can be organized with help of change agents. We develop a simple network approach to spreading information and delivering feedback in organizations. We suggest selecting employees with a role of change agents, focusing on the coverage they can obtain in the network – minimize the number of involved agents and maximize the size of their overall communication area. To explore and pre-verify the proposed approach, we compared and examined several network and classical methods of selection. Data includes networks of collaboration from three medium-sized companies. Agents selected …

A Machine Learning Approach For Using The Postmortem Skin Microbiome To Estimate The Postmortem Interval, Hunter R. Johnson, Donovan D. Trinidad, Stephania Guzman, Zenab Khan, James V. Parziale, Jennifer M. Debruyn, Nathan H. Lents

Publications and Research

Research on the human microbiome, the microbiota that live in, on, and around the human person, has revolutionized our understanding of the complex interactions between microbial life and human health and disease. The microbiome may also provide a valuable tool in forensic death investigations by helping to reveal the postmortem interval (PMI) of a decedent that is discovered after an unknown amount of time since death. Current methods of estimating PMI for cadavers discovered in uncontrolled, unstudied environments have substantial limitations, some of which may be overcome through the use of microbial indicators. In this project, we sampled the microbiomes …

Reflection Matrix Method For Controlling Light After Reflection From A Diffuse Scattering Surface, Kenneth W. Burgi Dec 2016

Reflection Matrix Method For Controlling Light After Reflection From A Diffuse Scattering Surface, Kenneth W. Burgi

Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on reflective inverse diffusion, which was a proof-of-concept experiment that used phase modulation to shape the wavefront of a laser causing it to refocus after reflection from a rough surface. By refocusing the light, reflective inverse diffusion has the potential to eliminate the complex radiometric model of indirect photography by creating a virtual light source at the first diffuse reflector that satisfies the line-of-sight requirement of dual photography. However, the initial reflective inverse diffusion experiments provided no mathematical background and were conducted under the premise that the process operated similarly to transmissive inverse diffusion.

In this research, …

Integrated Circuit Wear-Out Prediction And Recycling Detection Using Radio-Frequency Distinct Native Attribute Features, Randall D. Deppensmith Dec 2016

Integrated Circuit Wear-Out Prediction And Recycling Detection Using Radio-Frequency Distinct Native Attribute Features, Randall D. Deppensmith

Theses and Dissertations

Radio Frequency Distinct Native Attribute (RF-DNA) has shown promise for detecting differences in Integrated Circuits(IC) using features extracted from a devices Unintentional Radio Emissions (URE). This ability of RF-DNA relies upon process variation imparted to a semiconductor device during manufacturing. However, internal components in modern ICs electronically age and wear out over their operational lifetime. RF-DNA techniques are adopted from prior work and applied to MSP430 URE to address the following research goals: 1) Does device wear-out impact RF-DNA device discriminability?, 2) Can device age be continuously estimated by monitoring changes in RF-DNA features?, and 3) Can device age state …

An Information Theoretic Investigation Of Complex Adaptive Supply Networks With Organizational Topologies, Joshua V. Rodewald Dec 2016

An Information Theoretic Investigation Of Complex Adaptive Supply Networks With Organizational Topologies, Joshua V. Rodewald

Theses and Dissertations

Supply networks exist throughout society in manufacturing and knowledge-intensive industries as well as many service industries. Organizations have been noted to behave as complex adaptive systems or information supply networks with both formal and informal structures. Thoroughly understanding supply network structure and behavior are critical to managing such organizations effectively, but their properties of complex adaptive systems make them more difficult to analyze and assess, forcing researchers to rely on unrealistic data or assumptions of behavior. This research proposes an information theoretic methodology to discover such complex network structures and dynamics while overcoming the difficulties historically associated with their study. …
