Efficient Analytics For Large Implicit Correlation Networks, Raghuveer Mohan
Efficient Analytics For Large Implicit Correlation Networks, Raghuveer Mohan
All Dissertations
Large “correlationâ€-type networks have applications in machine learning, data mining and analysis of large biological networks. These networks contain short length-k (on the order of thousands) feature vectors for every node in the network that describe the characteristic or behavior of that node. Edges between nodes are expressed as correlations, partial correlations or coherence between the corresponding feature vectors. If the number of nodes n is too large (on the order of millions), then the dense correlation network with size n×n is computationally infeasible even to explicitly store in memory, let alone to use for computation of standard network analytics …
Characterization And Modeling Of Bond-Loss Behavior In Pretensioned Concrete I-Girders, Behnam Naji
Characterization And Modeling Of Bond-Loss Behavior In Pretensioned Concrete I-Girders, Behnam Naji
All Dissertations
Bond-loss failures have been widely observed in load tests of precast-pretensioned concrete I-girders. This type of failure is associated with shear cracking near the support that interrupts anchorage of the strands, leading to loss of bond and slipping of the strands relative to the concrete. It has been experimentally demonstrated that this failure type can occur at load levels that are lower than the nominal shear and flexural capacities. Because bond loss can be the controlling factor for structural capacity, it is critical that strand anchorage be considered when detailing and calculating the capacity of I-girder end regions. This dissertation …
Conjugated Polymers Under Confinement: Molecular Dynamics Simulations Study, Sabina Maskey
Conjugated Polymers Under Confinement: Molecular Dynamics Simulations Study, Sabina Maskey
All Dissertations
The conformations and dynamics of luminescent polymers, polymeric nanoparticles or polydots and polymers grafted onto inorganic nanoparticles using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation have been studied. Rigidity of the backbones of polymers effects their properties. Model polymer, dialkyl poly para phenylene ethynylene (PPE), comprises rigid backbones substituted by flexible side chains. The degree of conjugation of these polymers depends on the conformation of their backbones, which in turn affects their electronic and luminescence characteristics. The results of single chain of PPEs followed by polydots and polymers grafted onto inorganic nanoparticles. PPEs as a function of molecular weight and the nature of …
Fluorescent Methods For Investigating Metabolic Processes In Trypanosoma Brucei, Sheng Lin
Fluorescent Methods For Investigating Metabolic Processes In Trypanosoma Brucei, Sheng Lin
All Dissertations
Trypanosoma brucei is a unicellular kinetoplastid protozoan that is the causative agent of Human African Trypanosomiasis, or Sleeping Sickness. Combating these protozoan pathogens presents an ongoing challenge due to their efficient immune evasion strategies, lack of effective vaccines, poor drugs and emerging drug resistance, and the general lack of knowledge of their unique biological processes. Among one of the most important biological pathways for kinetoplastid protozoans is the synthesis of ATP from glucose within glycosome organelles. Glycosomes are related to mammalian peroxisomes, but differ in having a fully compartmentalized glycolysis pathway in addition to basic peroxisomal functions. While equivalent processes …

Ceramic Thin Films With Embedded Magnetic Nanofibers Or Nanorods Of Controlled Orientations, Zhaoxi Chen
All Dissertations
Ceramic thin films embedded with oriented magnetic nanofibers or nanorods are highly demanded for the applications in remote sensing, electromagnetic shielding, and thermal management at high temperatures. The general strategy for developing ceramic composite thin films with aligned magnetic nanorods or nanofibers has not been developed yet. This dissertation is centered on fundamentally understanding a sol-gel and polymer-based route towards creation of ceramic thin films with aligned magnetic nanostructures. The topics cover fabrication and properties of ceramic and ceramic-based nanofibers, precipitating magnetic nanoparticles within ceramic fibers, aligning and embedding nanofibers or nanorods within ceramic films, and preventing cracking during the …
On The Modal Effective Nonlinearity Of A Class Of Tapered-Cantilever Beams, Clodoaldo Jose Da Silva
On The Modal Effective Nonlinearity Of A Class Of Tapered-Cantilever Beams, Clodoaldo Jose Da Silva
All Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the influence of i) higher-order nonlinearities, and ii) assumed mode discretization on the approximate modal effective nonlinearity associated with the flexural response of thin metallic cantilever beams of a constant thickness and a linearly-varying width. To this end, in the first part of this dissertation, a nonlinear model of an Euler-Bernoulli metallic cantilever beam with an arbitrarily variable cross-section is derived. Unlike the common literature wherein the Lagrangian is truncated using a fourth-order Taylor series; here the series is truncated at the eighth order to study the influence of higher-order nonlinearities on …
Design And Simulation Of Type Two Fuzzy Logic Based Pd Controller For Variable Speed Rotation Active Magnetic Bearing System Subject To Random Disturbance, Mina Qays
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
In this paper the design of type-2 fuzzy logic based PD controller for an active magnetic bearing system (AMB) is presented. Such a system is known to be inherently unstable. The logic techniques of the proposed method continuously observes the error signal and it's change in order to modify the parameters of a PD controller. An improved tracking performance has been achieved. Robustness against disturbance effects with various rotation speeds has also been noticed. Comparison with a regular fuzzy like PD controller shows a noticeable improvement in the tracking performance of the system, especially in the presence of disturbances. In …

Designing Technical-Assistance Programs: Considerations For Funders And Lessons Learned, Jennifer Lyons, Sheila Dunleavy Hoag, Cara Orfield, Sonya Streeter
The Foundation Review
As foundations continue to provide grantees with technical assistance in addition to financial support, it is important to understand what works well, for whom, and in what circumstances. This reflective practice article aims to help funders who have identified a problem amenable to technical assistance to develop a strong program by providing support to a group of organizations addressing similar problems or by providing customized individual support.
Drawing on insights from evaluations of two technical-assistance programs, this article recommends five key issues for funders to consider when offering such a program: whose priorities will shape the agenda, how group composition …

Perpetua: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at UAH
Formal logic is a fundamental topic of computer science. This paper introduces readers to the basic logic operators of predicate logic and how they can be applied to a diagram-based notation for logic called existential graphs. Inference rules for sound and complete existential graph transformation are presented with brief examples of their applica-tion. The authors introduce a new web-based Existen-tial Graph Editor Tool built to implement existential graphs. A brief tour of the tool’s graphical user inter-face and key features is provided. The efficacy of the formal logic tool is demonstrated by proving an ex-ample theorem.

Inflationary Gravitational Waves And B-Mode Polarization Of The Cosmic Microwave Background, Kylie Todd Heflin
Perpetua: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at UAH
This paper is an attempt to introduce the concept of gravitational waves, interpret the results of BICEP2 and Planck, analyze the methods employed by both missions, and evaluate the implications of the existence of inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs). BICEP2/Keck Array are experiments aimed at meas-uring the polarization of the cosmic microwave back-ground (CMB), as well as providing speculation re-garding the origin of B-Mode polarization of the CMB. In June 2014, BICEP2 reported the detection of such polarization but acknowledged uncertainty regarding its origin due to the possibility of gravita-tional lensing caused by cosmic dust. BICEP2’s de-tection used a CMB polarimeter …

Targeted Enforcement Against Illicit Trade In Tobacco Products, James Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick, Mark A. R. Kleiman
Targeted Enforcement Against Illicit Trade In Tobacco Products, James Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick, Mark A. R. Kleiman
School of Public Policy Working Papers
Illicit trade in tobacco is a substantial and growing problem in the U.S., causing loss of tax revenue, damage to public health, and threats to public safety. Decisions about enforcement against ITTP involve tradeoffs among competing objectives. Good policy design can improve the terms of those tradeoffs but cannot eliminate them. We examine questions about the allocation of enforcement resources against ITTP, and its distribution across activities, individuals, and organizations: in particular, whether and how to differentially target ITTP that involves violence or support for terrorism. We consider the problem of developing effective strategies for enforcement, applying both lessons from …

Algorithms For Learning The Structure Of Monotone And Nonmonotone Sum-Product Networks, Aaron W. Dennis
Algorithms For Learning The Structure Of Monotone And Nonmonotone Sum-Product Networks, Aaron W. Dennis
Theses and Dissertations
The sum-product network (SPN) is a recently-proposed generative, probabilistic model that is guaranteed to compute any joint or any marginal probability in time linear in the size of the model. An SPN is represented as a directed, acyclic graph (DAG) of sum and product nodes, with univariate probability distributions at the leaves. It is important to learn the structure of this DAG since the set of distributions representable by an SPN is constrained by it. We present the first batch structure learning algorithm for SPNs and show its advantage over learning the parameters of an SPN with fixed architecture. We …

This study aims to further develop and demonstrate the recently-proposed smart rock technology for scour depth and protection effectiveness monitoring. A smart rock is one or two stacked magnets encased in a concrete sphere with a specially-designed rotational mechanism. Design guidelines, rotational mechanisms, remote measurement tools and localization algorithms of smart rocks were developed and validated at three bridge sites. The effect of steel reinforcement in bridge piers/deck on the orientation of gravity-controlled magnets was negligible. The localization accuracy with a single smart rock met a general requirement of less than 0.5 m in engineering applications. The spherical smart rock …

Groundwater is increasingly being overdrafted in the Southeastern U.S., despite abundant rainfall and the apparent availability of surface water. Using the state of Louisiana as an example, the current study quantifies the stresses on water resources and investigates the potential for opportunities to use surface water in lieu of groundwater pumping. The assessment is based on a fine watershed scale (12-digit Hydrological Unit Code [HUC] boundaries) water balance between the availability of surface and groundwater and surface water and groundwater demand. Water demand includes environmental flows, as well as public supply, rural domestic, industrial, power generation, agricultural, and aquaculture sectors. …

The pavement consisted of a basal concrete layer (~220 mm), an intervening layer of hot-mix asphalt (~60 mm), and a concrete overlay (~220 mm). The section of multi-layered pavement was cored at multiple PSPA test locations for verification purposes. The conditions of the extracted cores were assessed visually, and the static elastic modulus, as well as the compressional wave velocity of each concrete overlay core, were measured in the laboratory. Results …
Examining Denitrification In Agricultural Ditch Sediments Vegetated With Rice Cutgrass (Leersia Oryzoides): Modeling Seasonal Variation Across Increasing Levels Of Nitrate Loading And Model Application To Pre-Existing Datasets, Shannon Lee Speir
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen (N) derived from fertilizer application in agricultural systems may contribute to significant environmental impacts, including eutrophication of fresh and coastal waters. Rice cutgrass (Leersia oryzoides) can significantly enhance denitrification potential in agricultural ditch sediments, but relationships with known drivers are not well understood. To address this, I examined effects of nitrate (NO3-) availability on dinitrogen gas (N2) and NO3- fluxes seasonally in Chapter 2. Denitrification rates were measured as N2 flux from intact vegetated sediment cores using Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry (MIMS). Michaelis-Menten models were developed from observations to mathematically describe N2 fluxes across the spring, summer, and fall …

In this thesis we describe a smart-camera system we designed, implemented, and evaluated for fall prevention monitoring of at-risk people while in bed, whether it be for a hospital patient, nursing home resident, or at home elderly resident. The camera will give a nurse or caregiver environmental awareness of the at-risk person and notify them when that …
Artificial Quantum Many-Body States In Complex Oxide Heterostructures At Two-Dimensional Limit, Xiaoran Liu
Artificial Quantum Many-Body States In Complex Oxide Heterostructures At Two-Dimensional Limit, Xiaoran Liu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the representative family of complex oxides, transition metal oxides, where the lattice,
charge, orbital and spin degrees of freedom are tightly coupled, have been at the forefront
of condensed matter physics for decades. With the advancement of state-of-the-art heteroepitaxial deposition techniques, it has been recognized that combining these oxides on the atomic scale, the interfacial region offers great opportunities to discover emergent phenomena and tune materials' functionality. However, there still lacks general guiding principles for experimentalists, following which one can design and fabricate artificial systems on demand. The main theme of this dissertation is to devise and propose some …
Effects Of Mars Regolith Analogs, Uvc Radiation, Temperature, Pressure, And Ph On The Growth And Survivability Of Methanogenic Archaea And Stable Carbon Isotope Fractionation: Implications For Surface And Subsurface Life On Mars, Navita Sinha
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mars is one of the suitable bodies in our solar system that can accommodate extraterrestrial life. The detection of plumes of methane in the Martian atmosphere, geochemical evidence, indication of flow of intermittent liquid water on the Martian surface, and geomorphologies of Mars have bolstered the plausibility of finding extant or evidence of extinct life on its surface and/or subsurface. However, contemporary Mars has been considered as an inhospitable planet for several reasons, such as low atmospheric surface pressure, low surface temperature, and intense DNA damaging radiation. Despite the hostile conditions of Mars, a few strains of methanogenic archaea have …
Soil And Plant Property Differences Among High-Yield Soybean Areas In Arkansas, Taylor Cass Adams
Soil And Plant Property Differences Among High-Yield Soybean Areas In Arkansas, Taylor Cass Adams
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Continued achievement of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yields greater than 6719 kg ha-1 (100 bu ac-1) will depend on decreasing the yield gap, which is contingent on gathering more information regarding the soil physical, chemical, and microbiological environment and the main plant factors contributing to high-yield soybean. Therefore, understanding the main factor differences between high- and average-yield areas may provide insight for making management decisions to increase yields. The objectives of this study were i) to evaluate the effects of region and soil depth on soil property differences between high- and average-soybean-yielding areas, ii) to determine which soil properties …
