On The Exchange Property For The Mehler-Fock Transform, Abhishek Singh
On The Exchange Property For The Mehler-Fock Transform, Abhishek Singh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The theory of Schwartz Distributions opened up a new area of mathematical research, which in turn has provided an impetus in the development of a number of mathematical disciplines, such as ordinary and partial differential equations, operational calculus, transformation theory and functional analysis. The integral transforms and generalized functions have also shown equivalent association of Boehmians and the integral transforms. The theory of Boehmians, which is a generalization of Schwartz distributions are discussed in this paper. Further, exchange property is defined to construct Mehler-Fock transform of tempered Boehmians. We investigate exchange property for the Mehler-Fock transform by using the theory …
Higher Education Perspectives: The Role Magic The Gathering Plays In Whole-Person, Academic, And Career Development, Bob Ellsworth Lynch
Higher Education Perspectives: The Role Magic The Gathering Plays In Whole-Person, Academic, And Career Development, Bob Ellsworth Lynch
Dissertations
Games contribute to the whole-person, academic, and career development of collegeaged individuals (Alderman, 2015). However, many higher-education institutions do not sponsor gaming as a collegiate extracurricular activity, thereby possibly eliminating the opportunity of an all-inclusive environment (Alderman, 2015). To elucidate the problem, Astin and Antonio’s (2012) I-E-O model was engaged as conceptual framework for college-aged individuals’ perception of Magic the Gathering’s role in their whole-person, academic, and career development. The purpose of the study was to employ Magic the Gathering as the input; higher-education institutions as the environment; and wholeperson, academic, and career development as the outcome. Descriptive survey data …

Development Of A Performance-Based Procedure For Assessment Of Liquefaction-Induced Free-Field Settlements, Brian David Peterson
Development Of A Performance-Based Procedure For Assessment Of Liquefaction-Induced Free-Field Settlements, Brian David Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Liquefaction-induced settlement can cause significant damage to structures and infrastructure in the wake of a seismic event. Predicting settlement is an essential component of a comprehensive seismic design. The inherent uncertainty associated with seismic events makes the accurate prediction of settlement difficult. While several methods of assessing seismic hazards exist, perhaps the most promising is performance-based earthquake engineering, a framework presented by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center. The PEER framework incorporates probability theory to generate a comprehensive seismic hazard analysis. Two settlement estimation methods are incorporated into the PEER framework to create a fully probabilistic settlement estimation procedure. …
Redbeds Of The Upper Entrada Sandstone, Central Utah: Facies Analysis And Regional Implications Of Interfingered Sabkha And Fluvial Terminal Splay Sediments, Jeffery Michael Valenza
Redbeds Of The Upper Entrada Sandstone, Central Utah: Facies Analysis And Regional Implications Of Interfingered Sabkha And Fluvial Terminal Splay Sediments, Jeffery Michael Valenza
Theses and Dissertations
First distinguished from other sedimentary successions in 1928, the Entrada Sandstone has been the subject of numerous studies. The western extent of the formation was initially described as laterally continuous "earthy" red beds, and categorized as sub- to supratidal marine-influenced sediments. Recent workers have reexamined the sedimentary facies hosted by the Entrada Sandstone, and findings suggest purely terrestrial depositional environments. Several outcrops of the upper Entrada hosted peculiar sedimentary features, including undulatory and convex-upward, parallel-laminated bedforms, reminiscent of hummocky cross-stratification- unexpected features in a terrestrial environment. The purpose of this study was to collect detailed outcrop measurements of these and …
Decision Making In The Backcountry While Carrying A Cellular Phone, Quinn S. Linford
Decision Making In The Backcountry While Carrying A Cellular Phone, Quinn S. Linford
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain understanding about the influence of technology, specifically cellular phones, on decision making during potentially risky situations in the backcountry. Previous research in this area is contradictory and some studies indicate technology is influencing people to take more risks while others suggest it is not. Further confounding the relationship is the fact that previous studies have found people may be taking more risk in the presence of technology were based largely on respondent perceptions, not observation data. The current study used a scenario-based decision model to examine the difference in decision making between …
Comparison Of Simulation And Hands-On Labs In Helping High School Students Learn Physics Concepts, Matthew Charles Rytting
Comparison Of Simulation And Hands-On Labs In Helping High School Students Learn Physics Concepts, Matthew Charles Rytting
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the research was to determine whether PhET simulation labs or hands-on labs were more effective in helping students learn physics concepts. This measure was done by comparing quiz scores using recall, calculation, and transfer questions. Additionally, student perceptions of learning from both hands-on and simulation lab experiences were measured. Six labs were conducted with high school physics students on the topics of momentum, energy, circuits, angular momentum, pendulums, and friction. It was found that PhET simulation labs were as effective at creating student understanding, and sometimes more effective, as measured by quizzes given after the labs. Additionally, …
A Framework For Evaluating Recommender Systems, Michael Gabriel Bean
A Framework For Evaluating Recommender Systems, Michael Gabriel Bean
Theses and Dissertations
Prior research on text collections of religious documents has demonstrated that viable recommender systems in the area are lacking, if not non-existent, for some datasets. For example, both www.LDS.org and scriptures.byu.edu are websites designed for religious use. Although they provide users with the ability to search for documents based on keywords, they do not provide the ability to discover documents based on similarity. Consequently, these systems would greatly benefit from a recommender system. This work provides a framework for evaluating recommender systems and is flexible enough for use with either website. Such a framework would identify the best recommender system …

An Analysis Of Support For Elementary Engineering Education Offered In The Science Teacher Journal Science And Children, Tawnicia Meservy Stocking
Theses and Dissertations
Teachers use professional journals such as Science and Children for ideas to incorporate into their own teaching. As such the purpose of this study was to investigate the support offered for integrating engineering education into science instruction. The research methodology for this was a qualitative content analysis inferring categories based on the information presented. Twenty-three issues of the journal were read, spanning two and a half volume years. The categories that emerged were mentioning, implementing, and integrating. Deeper examples of integration were found to match the mapping and infusion strategies presented by the National Academy of Engineering and National Research …
Asymmetry Of Gains And Losses: Behavioral And Electrophysiological Measures, Diego Gonzalo Flores
Asymmetry Of Gains And Losses: Behavioral And Electrophysiological Measures, Diego Gonzalo Flores
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to explore the effects of small monetary or economic gains and/or losses on choice behavior through the use of a computerized game and to determine gain/loss ratio differences using both behavioral and electrophysiological measures. Participants (N=53) played the game in several 36 minute sessions. These sessions operated with concurrent variable-interval schedules for both rewards and penalties. Previously, asymmetrical effects of gains and losses have been identified through cognitive studies, primarily due to the work of nobel laureates Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky (1979). They found that the effect of a loss is twice (i.e., …
Evolvability And Excess Capability As A Response To Uncertain And Future Requirements, Jeffrey Douglas Allen
Evolvability And Excess Capability As A Response To Uncertain And Future Requirements, Jeffrey Douglas Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Product and system designers face many challenges in the modern world. Designing products that will be subject to emerging or uncertain requirements can be one of the most significant of these challenges. A major risk associated with emerging or uncertain requirements is premature obsolescence. Large-scale, complex engineered systems, such as, aircraft, spacecraft, large seagoing vessels, communication and power systems are especially susceptible to this issue. However, this challenge is not limited to only large-scale complex systems. Even relatively simple products can suffer from premature obsolescence and even failure to be initially accepted, due to inadequately understood or changing requirements. One …

Implementing Arts-Integrated Lessons Through Auto-Ethnography To Improve Teacher Collaboration, Richard M. Romero Jr
Implementing Arts-Integrated Lessons Through Auto-Ethnography To Improve Teacher Collaboration, Richard M. Romero Jr
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
By utilizing the auto-ethnographical approach to writing in the creatively structured format of an arts-integrated exercise that is project-based, this study analyzes qualitative responses made by one administrator and three in-service teachers. By retroactively highlighting students’ epiphanies of musical memories (see Appendix D) while also integrating Common-Core and State Standards into its structural design, it produced an activity that was extremely challenging for fifth-grade students but also may hold potential for growth in writing skills and self-knowledge especially as it relates to the practice of teacher self-study. This approach may be utilized in classrooms in the future, but any integration …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Minecraft, an open world sandbox game rich with educational possibility, has been a growing sensation among elementary age children across the US. Though there has been some experimentation in a number of schools across the United States, there has been no mass movement to embracing Minecraft as a virtual learning environment. With advances in the fields of Virtual Learning Environments and the new wave of educational thinking known as the “Maker Movement,” the modern educational field has an opportunity for radical new ways of teaching. Using an elementary school as a model in the Monterey Bay area, I surveyed a …

Using Gis To Detect Land Use Changes In The Salinas River Valley From 2001 And 2011, Brian Strukan
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to explore, analyze, and interpret our environment is a relatively new technology with exciting new advances emerging each day. GIS can be used along with satellite imagery to detect changes on Earth’s surface (Delavar, 2015). With the human population growing rapidly, it has become very important to monitor when, where, and how we are changing the planet. Using the theory of land economics, coupled with land classification maps from 2001 and 2011, I will explain how cities are changing in the Salinas River Valley, a prime agricultural zone in central California. Are …

Variable Residence Time-Based Model For Bod Removal In Free-Water Surface Wetlands, Zhiqiang Deng, Degefu Y. Sebro, Alaa Farouk Aboukila, Lars Bengtsson
Faculty Publications
Constructed wetlands have been increasingly used for treatment of secondary wastewater containing various contaminants. This paper presents a Variable Residence Time (VART)-based model, called VART-BOD model, for simulation of BOD removal processes in constructed wetlands with free water surface (FWS). Mathematically, the VART-BOD model describes a free water surface wetland with three vertical layers, including vegetated water column layer, advection-dominated upper root layer, and diffusion-dominated lower root layer. Biogeochemically, the VART-BOD model simulates various BOD removal processses and mechanisms, including monod kinetics of bacterial growth, mass exchange between water column and root layers, advection, dispersion, and diffusion. A unique feature …
Development Of A Parametric Cost Estimating Model For University Of Alaska System Renovation Construction Projects, Gregory Puckett
Development Of A Parametric Cost Estimating Model For University Of Alaska System Renovation Construction Projects, Gregory Puckett
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Early building construction planning strategies provide the foundation for the subsequent performance and success of a project. Cost estimates for projects with minimal scope of work definition, but within the range of accuracy established by industry-recognized professional standards, represent a critical factor in screening potential endeavors against competing alternatives and establishing baseline budgets. Parametric cost estimating models provide owners and managers a tool to develop a prediction of costs and determine the feasibility of a project. This study investigated the process and performance of parametric cost estimates for building renovation projects by analyzing cost data and construction documentation for 50 …

Bezout Inequality For Mixed Volumes, Ivan Soprunov, Artem Zvavitch
Bezout Inequality For Mixed Volumes, Ivan Soprunov, Artem Zvavitch
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper we consider the following analog of Bezout inequality for mixed volumes: V(P1,…,Pr,Δn−r)Vn(Δ)r−1≤∏i=1rV(Pi,Δn−1) for 2≤r≤n. We show that the above inequality is true when Δ is an n-dimensional simplex and P1,…,Pr are convex bodies in Rn. We conjecture that if the above inequality is true for all convex bodies P1,…,Pr, then Δ must be an n-dimensional simplex. We prove that if the above inequality is true for all convex bodies P1,…,Pr, then Δ must be indecomposable (i.e. cannot be written as the Minkowski sum of two convex bodies which are not homothetic to Δ), which confirms the conjecture …
Competency-Based Education And Federal Student Aid, Stephen R. Porter
Competency-Based Education And Federal Student Aid, Stephen R. Porter
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Competency-based education is increasingly popular because of the flexibility it provides for students seeking a postsecondary credential. Current federal student aid, however, is geared toward supporting students in traditional, time-based degree programs. This paper discusses why current approaches to federal student aid are not supportive of competency-based degree programs and explores how federal statute and regulations could be changed, in ways that are not reliant on time and credit hours, to disburse aid to students while minimizing fraud.
Compounding Fire Disturbance History Encourages Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Regeneration And Community Dominance, Matthew R. Brousil
Compounding Fire Disturbance History Encourages Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Regeneration And Community Dominance, Matthew R. Brousil
Master's Theses
Disturbance is fundamental to forest ecosystem function and overall health, but climate change is likely to increase both disturbance frequency and intensity in the future. Forests subject to increasingly frequent and intense disturbances are more likely to experience compounding disturbance effects. Compounding disturbances may exert unpredicted, non-additive stresses on ecosystems, leading to novel conditions that may exceed the capacity for local species to survive and regenerate. I further hypothesize that compounding disturbances could create conditions misaligned with species’ adaptations by altering physical and chemical growing conditions in forest soils, affecting forest composition, structure, and, subsequently, function for many years following …
Studies With Dynamic Nuclear Imaging Image Reconstruction Algorithm, Haoran Chang
Studies With Dynamic Nuclear Imaging Image Reconstruction Algorithm, Haoran Chang
Theses and Dissertations
Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is a useful method for those non-negative multivariate data. In nuclear imaging, NMF, which is also called factor analysis, is used to analyze the 4D image of positron emission tomography and single positron emission computed tomography. Normally, we use factor analysis of dynamic structure (FADS) for the dynamic reconstruction [1]. However, this reconstruction algorithm is extremely dependent on the initial data, which means the result may be unstable when the initial data is not good enough. There are several ways for the initializing, such as splined initialized (SIFADS) [2] and clustering initialized (CIFA) [3][4]. In this …

A General Code To Represent The Mathematical Life Cycle Cost Model Of Bridge, Bajel Mohammed Alshadeedi
Masters Theses
There are many factors that play a role in the overall cost of any bridge. The life cycle cost needs deep knowledge of bridge components to calculate its subcategories costs. The bridge life cycle cost is divided into; agency, user cost, and society costs. The agency cost includes the expected value of the final bridge construction cost, the inspection cost, better value of repainting cost, and replacing asphaltic deck cost. The user cost includes traffic delay cost and vehicle operation cost under different traffic conditions, accident cost, and failure cost. The society cost includes aesthetical and environmental impact. All costs …
On Path Consistency For Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Christopher G. Reeson
On Path Consistency For Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Christopher G. Reeson
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) provide a flexible and powerful framework for modeling and solving many decision problems of practical importance. Consistency properties and the algorithms for enforcing them on a problem instance are at the heart of Constraint Processing and best distinguish this area from other areas concerned with the same combinatorial problems. In this thesis, we study path consistency (PC) and investigate several algorithms for enforcing it on binary finite CSPs. We also study algorithms for enforcing consistency properties that are related to PC but are stronger or weaker than PC.
We identify and correct errors in the literature …
Using Software Testing Techniques To Infer Biological Models, Mikaela Cashman
Using Software Testing Techniques To Infer Biological Models, Mikaela Cashman
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Years of research in software testing has given us novel ways to reason about and test the behavior of complex software systems that contain hundreds of thousands of lines of code. Many of these techniques have been inspired by nature such as genetic algorithms, swarm intelligence, and ant colony optimization. However, they use a unidirectional analogy – taking from nature without giving back.
In this thesis we invert this view and ask if we can utilize techniques from testing and modeling of highly-configurable software systems to aid in the emerging field of systems biology which aims to model and predict …
Rectilinear Steiner Tree Construction, Zhiliu Zhang
Rectilinear Steiner Tree Construction, Zhiliu Zhang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Minimum Rectilinear Steiner Tree (MRST) problem is to find the minimal spanning tree of a set of points (also called terminals) in the plane that interconnects all the terminals and some extra points (called Steiner points) introduced by intermediate junctions, and in which edge lengths are measured in the L1 (Manhattan) metric. This is one of the oldest optimization problems in mathematics that has been extensively studied and has been proven to be NP-complete, thus efficient approximation heuristics are more applicable than exact algorithms.
In this thesis, we present a new heuristic to construct rectilinear Steiner trees (RSTs) with …
