Going Online On Behalf Of Others: An Investigation Of ‘Proxy’ Internet Consumers, Neil Selwyn, Nicola Johnson, Selena Nemorin, Elizabeth Knight Jan 2016

Going Online On Behalf Of Others: An Investigation Of ‘Proxy’ Internet Consumers, Neil Selwyn, Nicola Johnson, Selena Nemorin, Elizabeth Knight

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A range of Australians find themselves acting as ‘proxy internet users’ – i.e. using online services and applications on behalf of other adults who otherwise make limited use of the internet. It is rare for those adults being supported by proxies to be absolute non-users of the internet. Apart from extreme cases of physical/intellectual incapacity, most people covered by our research were making some use of the internet, if only through smartphones and Apps. Proxy internet assistance often takes place within families – notably elderly parents being helped by their adult sons and daughters. Other proxy users include people acting …

Written Plans And Self-Evaluations In Investigative Interviews With Witnesses, Jane Tudor-Owen Jan 2016

Written Plans And Self-Evaluations In Investigative Interviews With Witnesses, Jane Tudor-Owen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The PEACE model of investigative interviewing (Preparation and planning; Engage and explain; Account, clarification, and challenge [Account]; Closure; and Evaluation), has been in operation internationally since the early 1990s when it was introduced in England and Wales. The model is in operation in a number of Australian jurisdictions, including Western Australia (WA), where it was formally incorporated into interview training in 2009. While there have been a number of evaluations of the PEACE model, they have predominantly focused on the interview stages of the model; that is, Engage and explain, Account, and Closure. By comparison, the Preparation and planning and …

Utilising Voice Recognition Software To Improve Reading Fluency Of Struggling Adolescent Readers, Peter Count Jan 2016

Utilising Voice Recognition Software To Improve Reading Fluency Of Struggling Adolescent Readers, Peter Count

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Approximately 15-20% of secondary students in Australia experience reading difficulties. For many, the cognitive effort required to decode words or the lack of automaticity in the elements that contribute to fluent reading prevents effective reading comprehension. Because reading comprehension is of critical importance across the curriculum, students with difficulties in this area are at significant academic risk.

One effective method of improving reading fluency is ‘repeated readings’ (NICHHD, 2000). The purpose of this study was to examine whether the use of repeated readings delivered via a home-based program employing voice recognition software (VRS) could improve the reading fluency and self-perception …

The Relationship Between Neurocognitive Functioning And Occupational Functioning In Bipolar Disorder: A Literature Review, Walace Duarte, Rodrigo Beccerra, Kate Cruise Jan 2016

The Relationship Between Neurocognitive Functioning And Occupational Functioning In Bipolar Disorder: A Literature Review, Walace Duarte, Rodrigo Beccerra, Kate Cruise

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Neurocognitive impairment in Bipolar Disorder (BD) has been widely reported, even during remission. Neurocognitive impairment has been identified as a contributing factor towards unfavourable psychosocial functioning within this population. The objective of this review was to investigate the association between neurocognitive impairment and occupational functioning in BD. A literature review of English-language journal articles from January 1990 to November 2013 was undertaken utilising the PsychINFO, Scopus and Web of Knowledge databases. Studies that made specific reference to occupational outcomes were included, and those that reported on global psychosocial measures were excluded. Majority of the papers reviewed (20 out of 23) …

Combining Content-Based And Eap Approaches To Academic Writing: Towards An Eclectic Program, Rosemary Joy Allen Jan 2016

Combining Content-Based And Eap Approaches To Academic Writing: Towards An Eclectic Program, Rosemary Joy Allen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Over the past decade, Australian universities have experienced an exponential increase in the enrolment of fee-paying overseas students whose preparation for tertiary studies may differ significantly from that of local students. Despite English language proficiency requirements, there is some concern that international entry tests do not adequately measure the complex features of university writing; an important concern given that student success is heavily dependent on their mastery of academic writing. As a result, many international students require additional support structures. Until the present, debate about the most effective way to meet the diverse needs of English as an Additional Language …

Measuring The Quality And Identifying Influencing Factors Of Sustainability Reporting: Evidence From The Resources Industry In Australia, Siew Hoon Ong Jan 2016

Measuring The Quality And Identifying Influencing Factors Of Sustainability Reporting: Evidence From The Resources Industry In Australia, Siew Hoon Ong

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The lack of a standardised reporting framework in sustainability reporting has resulted in companies producing unaudited generic sustainability information that are not reflective of companies’ actual sustainability performance. The disclosures also differ in quality and hinder comparison. This study addresses these problems with the development of a new scoring index that integrates the hard and soft principles in Clarkson, Li, Richardson and Vasvari’s (2008) environmental index with performance indicators of the Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) framework. The newly developed index comprises all three aspects of sustainability (economic, environmental and social) and adopts a standardised scoring scale that is reflective of …

New Cost Model For Feasibility Analysis Of Utilising Special Purpose Machine Tools, Ana Vafadar, Majid Tolouei-Rad, Kevin Haywood Jan 2016

New Cost Model For Feasibility Analysis Of Utilising Special Purpose Machine Tools, Ana Vafadar, Majid Tolouei-Rad, Kevin Haywood

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Special purpose machine tools (SPMs) have been widely used to perform drilling-related operations in high volume production including within automotive component industries. The first step in designing and manufacturing a SPM is a feasibility analysis. Since SPMs have relatively higher investment cost than other machine tools, this task must be performed before any investment on the preparation of detailed design. The present paper explores an economic feasibility analysis strategy which aims to make logical decision by assessing the strengths and limitations of an SPM in comparison with other machine tools. The mathematical product cost model for SPMs is proposed for …

Can Dna Be Speech?, Jorge R. Roig Jan 2016

Can Dna Be Speech?, Jorge R. Roig

Scholarly Works

DNA is generally regarded as the basic building block of life itself. In the most fundamental sense, DNA is nothing more than a chemical compound, albeit a very complex and peculiar one. DNA is an information-carrying molecule. The specific sequence of base pairs contained in a DNA molecule carries with it genetic information, and encodes for the creation of particular proteins. When taken as a whole, the DNA contained in a single human cell is a complete blueprint and instruction manual for the creation of that human being. In this article we discuss myriad current and developing ways in which …

Class-Based Affirmative Action, Or The Lies That We Tell About The Insignificance Of Race, Khiara Bridges Jan 2016

Class-Based Affirmative Action, Or The Lies That We Tell About The Insignificance Of Race, Khiara Bridges

Faculty Scholarship

This Article conducts a critique of class-based affirmative action, identifying and problematizing the narrative that it tells about racial progress. The Article argues that class-based affirmative action denies that race is a significant feature of American life. It denies that individuals - and groups - continue to be advantaged and disadvantaged on account of race. It denies that there is such a thing called race privilege that materially impacts people’s worlds. Moreover, this Article suggests that at least part of the reason why class-based affirmative action has been embraced by those who oppose race-based affirmative action is precisely because it …

Equipment For Dying: A Dramatistic Critique Of Heroism And The Crises Assaulting Returning Soldiers, Jonathan Mark Broussard Jan 2016

Equipment For Dying: A Dramatistic Critique Of Heroism And The Crises Assaulting Returning Soldiers, Jonathan Mark Broussard

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a dramatistic critique of the various crises and challenges assaulting United States soldiers and the current U.S. construction of warrior heroism through the theoretical lens of “Equipment for Dying.” Equipment for Dying theorizes that each specific crisis or challenge faced is a contemporary incarnation of an archetypal challenged faced by all soldiers and the societies that send them to war. Therefore, the dramatic form of the myth of the heroic warrior provides models and guidelines for interpreting and responding to the “deaths” of the soldier: physical, psychological, or economic. As a theoretical frame, Equipment for Dying seeks …

The Strangely Familiar History Of The Unitary Theory Of Perpetration, James G. Stewart Jan 2016

The Strangely Familiar History Of The Unitary Theory Of Perpetration, James G. Stewart

All Faculty Publications

A unitary theory of perpetration is one that does not espouse different legal standards for different forms of participating in crime. In this Article, I pay homage to Professor Damaška’s influence on my work and career by reiterating my earlier arguments for a unitary theory of perpetration in international criminal law. Whereas my earlier work defended the unitary theory in abstract terms then for international criminal law in particular, this Article looks to the history of the unitary theory in five national systems that have abandoned differentiated systems like that currently in force internationally in favor of a unitary variant. …

The Intersection Of Culture And Icf-Cy Personal And Environmental Factors For Alternative And Augmentative Communication, Danai Kasambira Fannin Jan 2016

The Intersection Of Culture And Icf-Cy Personal And Environmental Factors For Alternative And Augmentative Communication, Danai Kasambira Fannin

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Clinicians facilitate successful use of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). The most clinically competent providers, however, address needs that extend beyond technical AAC use to help clients experience full participation. This can only be achieved for all clients by considering individual cultural factors that affect their participation. This article describes how Personal and Environmental Factors of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Children & Youth Version (ICF-CY; WHO, 2007) encompass how cultural characteristics (e.g., family/ home, school, recreational, social, or spiritual) impact participation. The ICF-CY can provide a structured way for Speech-Language Pathologists to …

Founding A Historically Latino/Caribbean-Serving Institution: An Archival Research Study On Florida International University, Amaris Del Carmen Guzmán Jan 2016

Founding A Historically Latino/Caribbean-Serving Institution: An Archival Research Study On Florida International University, Amaris Del Carmen Guzmán

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Employing an archival research approach, this study explores the formation of Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. As one of the few institutions to open its doors with a specific mission to promote greater international understanding, this study explores diasporic migration and community formation in efforts to challenge the U.S. federally designated phrase of Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSIs) and acknowledge those HSIs who have historically served Latino and Caribbean populations. The author defined FIU as a Historically Latino/Caribbean-serving institution based on the transnational Latino and Caribbean cultural community formation in southeast Florida between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. Specifically, this dissertation …

The Contribution Of Self-Regulation To Reading Comprehension In Adolescent Learners, Rebecca Lynn Parker Jan 2016

The Contribution Of Self-Regulation To Reading Comprehension In Adolescent Learners, Rebecca Lynn Parker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the dually implicated processes of language and self-regulation in reading comprehension and to determine if self-regulation contributes unique variance to reading comprehension beyond word recognition/decoding and oral language comprehension. The study also sought to determine if the unique contribution of self-regulation to reading comprehension differs for students with language/learning difficulties and students with typical language/learning histories. Thirty-two 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participated in this study. Of these participants, 17 students had language/learning difficulties and 15 students had typical language/learning histories. All participants attended a low performing public middle school located in …

"I Listen To Their Story, They Listen To My Comments, And Then I Pocket My Fee:" Sherlock Holmes As Rhetorical Equipment For Living, Andrew Cessna Jones Jan 2016

"I Listen To Their Story, They Listen To My Comments, And Then I Pocket My Fee:" Sherlock Holmes As Rhetorical Equipment For Living, Andrew Cessna Jones

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study argues that Sherlock Holmes serves as rhetorical equipment for living. Using Kenneth Burke’s theory of symbolic appeal and the critical tool proposed in the essay “Literature as Equipment for Living,” I explore how Holmes responds to the rhetorical situation of early nineteenth century England and consider why the Holmes symbol continues to appeal to audiences. I conclude that rhetoric is a necessary component of the Sherlock Holmes symbol and suggest that Holmes’s famous method is rhetorical rather than syllogistic.

The purpose of this research was to examine teachers’ attitudes on the READ 180 scripted curriculum in six Southern Louisiana schools. The researcher wanted to evaluate the factors that impact teachers’ attitudes toward using the READ 180 scripted curriculum in today’s classrooms. The study focused on teachers’ feelings, advantages and disadvantages of the READ 180 program, and how the program is being implemented. To discover teachers’ experiences with the READ 180 program the researcher conducted audio-recorded teacher interviews, recorded field notes during classroom observations, and collected documents from participating teachers. This study was conducted over the course of four months …

The Effect Of The Use Of The Students' First Language In Grammar Instruction: A Report On Student Preferences And Performance In The Target Language, Katherine Mickel Jan 2016

The Effect Of The Use Of The Students' First Language In Grammar Instruction: A Report On Student Preferences And Performance In The Target Language, Katherine Mickel

LSU Master's Theses

This study explores the effect of the use of the target language (TL) and the first language (L1) during grammar instruction in the foreign language classroom. There is limited evidence regarding the effect of language of instruction on TL acquisition (Tian & Macaro, 2012; Viakinnou-Brinson, Herron, Cole, & Haight, 2012; Antón & DiCamilla, 1999). However, this area warrants further research. As such, the present study investigates teacher language use (Spanish-only, English-only, or no restriction) during the explicit instruction of Spanish object pronouns (direct, indirect, and both combined) to measure the effect of each language condition on students’ object pronoun performance. …

Is Book The Same As Libro? A Comparative Study Of Lexical Access In Heritage Speakers And L2 Learners, María Gabriela Puscama Jan 2016

Is Book The Same As Libro? A Comparative Study Of Lexical Access In Heritage Speakers And L2 Learners, María Gabriela Puscama

LSU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT The Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM) posits an organization of the bilingual lexicon based on conceptual and lexical links between first (L1) and second (L2) language words (Kroll & Stewart, 1994). This model predicts that increasing L2 proficiency would lead to the strengthening of conceptual links between L1 and L2 words (Cheng & Leung, 1989; Dong et al., 2005, Francis et al., 2014). The question arises, however, whether proficiency is the only predictor of conceptual link strength. Some studies suggest that L2 word processing may be different in heritage speakers and adult L2 learners who have similar L2 proficiency, but …

The Relationship Between Artificial And Second Language Learning, Marc Ettlinger, Kara Morgan-Short, Mandy Faretta-Stutenberg, Patrick C.M. Wong

CISLL Publications

Artificial language learning (ALL) experiments have become an important tool in exploring principles of language and language learning. A persistent question in all of this work, however, is whether ALL engages the linguistic system and whether ALL studies are ecologically valid assessments of natural language ability. In the present study, we considered these questions by examining the relationship between performance in an ALL task and second language learning ability. Participants enrolled in a Spanish language class were evaluated using a number of different measures of Spanish ability and classroom performance, which was compared to IQ and a number of different …

The Politics Of Sensations: Body And Texture In Contemporary Cinema And Literature (Argentina - Cuba - Ireland), Guillermo Abel Severiche Jan 2016

The Politics Of Sensations: Body And Texture In Contemporary Cinema And Literature (Argentina - Cuba - Ireland), Guillermo Abel Severiche

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In my dissertation, I argue that the human body and physical sensations are not only objects or metaphors that appear in cultural artifacts, but also means of political representation. There are cultural artifacts with a corporeal dimension in which human bodily sensations and states, such as sexual arousal, disease, and pain, are represented. The body becomes a dimension integrated in the discursive form of the artwork. The (literary or cinematic) text evokes a texture, a sensitive skin. This corporeal means is politically engaged with the context in which the artwork has been produced: The body becomes a space of political …

Violent Conventions: An Analysis Of The Unintended Aesthetics Of On-Stage Accidents, Jeremy Matthew Reynolds Jan 2016

Violent Conventions: An Analysis Of The Unintended Aesthetics Of On-Stage Accidents, Jeremy Matthew Reynolds

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In theatre scholarship, the event of the on-stage accident is a fairly neglected area of research. Aside from brief archival detailing of some of the more tragic events, scholars have not approached the accidents from a theoretical or historiographical position. Many, I surmise, find little of interest in an on-stage accident due to its lack of aesthetic purpose or intentionality. In this project, I focus on those neglected accidents and, more specifically, accidents that take place due to a violent failure of theatrical convention. I discuss three specific moments where a theatre convention – established to concretize the world of …

Hidden In Plain Sight: An Ur-Text Of Pirkei Avot Derived From Avot De Rabbi Nathan (Arn), Stanley Boylan Jan 2016

Hidden In Plain Sight: An Ur-Text Of Pirkei Avot Derived From Avot De Rabbi Nathan (Arn), Stanley Boylan

New York School for Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) Publications and Research

Pirkei Avot, Chapters of the Fathers, itself consists of five distinct chapters. There is a very clear order to the maxims of Pirkei Avot that appear in the first two chapters, which follow the sayings of the Fathers, organized on a chronological basis, more or less. The last (fifth) chapter of Pirkei Avot is a collection of enumerations, sayings or maxims, which provide a numerical listing or otherwise reference numbers, organized in descending order. These general organizational themes apply to the respective sections of ARNA as well, with additional enumerations which supplement those contained in Pirkei Avot in the latter …

Colonial, Anticolonial, And Postcolonial Myth And Memory In The French-Algerian Narratives Of Albert Camus, Frantz Fanon, And Assia Djebar 1942-1999, Gina Marie Breen Jan 2016

Colonial, Anticolonial, And Postcolonial Myth And Memory In The French-Algerian Narratives Of Albert Camus, Frantz Fanon, And Assia Djebar 1942-1999, Gina Marie Breen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Algeria exemplifies a unique case of colonial domination, and of the problems that the colonial system generates. 132 years of colonial rule and settlement led to one of the bloodiest and most difficult battles of decolonization fought in the twentieth century. After eight years of war (1954-1962), which resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, Algeria became independent. As the postcolonial society abandoned the French language in an effort to promote Algerian nationalism and create and Arab-Algerian identity, Algeria entered another violent civil war in the 1990s. Thus today, more than fifty years after Algeria gained independence, and twenty years …

Influence Of Motivation On Phonics Effectiveness, Rachel L. Bradley Jan 2016

Influence Of Motivation On Phonics Effectiveness, Rachel L. Bradley

LSU Master's Theses

Reading is a basic life skill, and is paramount to students’ success in school. In fact, skilled readers tend to succeed in subject areas including mathematics, social studies, and science (Valleley & Shriver, 2003). Phonics is one of the cornerstones of learning to read. Without mastering phonics, students are more likely to experience persistent difficulties in reading (Elbro, 1996; Bus and Marinus H. van IJzendoorn, 1999; Rose, 2006). However, student motivation to read can impact the effectiveness of reading programs (Melekoglu, 2011). The current study examines the influence of motivation on the effectiveness of a phonics program with six first-graders …

The Repertoire Of Understanding: The Linguistic Patterning Of Repetition And Alignment Within Supportive Conversations, Kaitlin Emily Cannava Jan 2016

The Repertoire Of Understanding: The Linguistic Patterning Of Repetition And Alignment Within Supportive Conversations, Kaitlin Emily Cannava

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores a fundamental feature of all human interaction, behavioral coordination. Since early work on motor mimicry, scholars of human communication have invested tremendous energy to discover patterns of behavioral adaptation and the impact these patterns have on individual and relational outcomes. Outcomes such as individual health and well-being, as well as relationship satisfaction and divorce are all contingent on the ability to adapt and coordinate actions (Niederhoffer & Pennebaker, 2002; Stehl et al., 2008; Kulesza et al., 2013; Ireland et al., 2011). Several decades of research have advanced our understanding of specific characteristics of supportive messages and their …

El Tú No Es De Nosotros, Es De Otros Países: Usos Del Voseo Y Actitudes Hacia Él En El Castellano Hondureño, Monika Estrada Andino

LSU Master's Theses

Studies of Central American varieties of Spanish, including the Spanish spoken in Honduras, are scarce and the present study represents one of the few attempts to investigate the sociolinguistics of Honduran Spanish in the United States. Pronominal uses of voseo, tuteo and ustedeo are analyzed and compared between two speech communities located in the Central District of Honduras and the Baton Rouge Metro Area in Louisiana. Besides, the study explores linguistic attitudes towards pronominal forms of address in both communities. Language Variation Suite, a novel software application for sociolinguistic data analysis, was used as the primary tool to explore the …

Turning The Table Over: Collaboration And Critique At The New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, Erin Colleen Jordan Jan 2016

Turning The Table Over: Collaboration And Critique At The New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, Erin Colleen Jordan

LSU Master's Theses

In the late 1970s, the African American Jazz Coalition responded to the marginalization of black vendors at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival by partnering with the Festival to create the Koindu Marketplace, now known as Congo Square. Whereas much public representation of the Festival suggests a transcendence of racial boundaries inside Festival grounds, the content and structure of contemporary interviews with the activists reflect continued racial tensions, power dynamics, and resentment. This thesis analyzes oral histories with the founders of the Afrikan American Jazz Coalition stored at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive. Critical discourse analysis …
