Mormon Metaphors Of Restoration: Pathways To Identity And Understanding, Dallin D. Oaks Jan 2016

Mormon Metaphors Of Restoration: Pathways To Identity And Understanding, Dallin D. Oaks

Faculty Publications

The important role of metaphors in interfaith understanding has received significant attention. The pervasiveness of certain metaphors in the lives of members of a religious community is especially significant when they are incorporated into sacred texts. This would seem to be the case not only for Judaism, Islam, and mainline Christianity, but also for Mormonism, a distinctive branch of Christianity. Officially known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), Mormonism shares some root metaphors with other Christians but differs in important ways in its development and use of these metaphors. In this paper we discuss the journey, …

Phonetic Shift /Ɔr/ Phonemic Change? American English Mergers Over 40 Years, Joseph A. Stanley, Margaret E. L. Renwick Jan 2016

Phonetic Shift /Ɔr/ Phonemic Change? American English Mergers Over 40 Years, Joseph A. Stanley, Margaret E. L. Renwick

Faculty Publications

In this paper we analyze the vowel formants of a speaker over four decades to show phonemic change through time. Other real-time studies (Harrington, Palethorpe & Watson 2000; Harrington & Reubold 2015) have found that the vowel spaces of UK English speakers shift over the lifetime, likely as a consequence of interaction with speakers of other dialects or social classes. We focus on an understudied variety of English, spoken in the western United States, to investigate a pair of phonological mergers, the cord-card merger and the hoarse-horse merger.

The cord-card merger is a result of a historical three-way contrast of …

Constructing A Russian Elicited Imitation Exam, Troy L. Cox, Jennifer Brown, Jacob Burdis Jan 2016

Constructing A Russian Elicited Imitation Exam, Troy L. Cox, Jennifer Brown, Jacob Burdis

Faculty Publications

A Russian student wants to know if it is worth the expense to pay for an official ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). The director of a flagship program wants to measure the improvement of the oral proficiency of students returning from their in-country experience. A university department needs to provide evidence that their students are meeting learning objectives as part of accreditation. In each of these cases, a cost-effective, scalable solution to measuring oral proficiency would be helpful.

Assessing speaking ability in a foreign language has traditionally been a difficult and time-intensive task. A traditional method of measuring oral language …

A Retrospective Consideration Of Recreational Family Storytelling Among Parents And Their Adult Children, Kelly Gagalis-Hoffman, Ramon Zabriskie, Patti A. Freeman

Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to determine the purpose and function of recreational family storytelling across the life span from the perspective of parents and their adult children. Twelve individuals were interviewed (six parents paired with one of their adult children). Questions focused on ascertaining the purpose and function of storytelling from the perspectives of parents and children in the same family unit. In these families storytelling created opportunities for family bonding. Storytelling accomplished its purpose of creating family bonds through five functions: being fun, dealing with difficult topics or situations, transferring beliefs and values as well as giving …

Citizenship, Belonging, And Political Community In Africa: Dialogues Between Past And Present, Emma Hunter Jan 2016

Citizenship, Belonging, And Political Community In Africa: Dialogues Between Past And Present, Emma Hunter

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Africa, it is often said, is suffering from a crisis of citizenship. At the heart of the contemporary debates this apparent crisis has provoked lie dynamic relations between the present and the past, between political theory and political practice, and between legal categories and lived experience. Yet studies of citizenship in Africa have often tended to foreshorten historical time and privilege the present at the expense of the deeper past.

Citizenship, Belonging, and Political Community in Africa provides a critical reflection on citizenship in Africa by bringing together scholars working with very different case studies and with very different understandings …

#Thyghgapp: Instagram Content Moderation And Lexical Variation In Pro-Eating Disorder Communities, Stevie Chancellor, Jessica Pater, Trustin Clear, Eric Gilbert, Munmun De Choudhury

Health Services and Informatics Research

CSCW '16, FEBRUARY 27–MARCH2, 2016, SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA

In Proceedings of the 19th ACM conference on computer-supported cooperative work & social computing.

Pro-eating disorder (pro-ED) communities on social media encourage the adoption and maintenance of disordered eating habits as acceptable alternative lifestyles rather than threats to health. In particular, the social networking site Instagram has reacted by banning searches on several proED tags and issuing content advisories on others. We present the first large-scale quantitative study investigating pro-ED communities on Instagram in the aftermath of moderation – our dataset contains 2.5M posts between 2011 and 2014. We find that …

Narratives Of Aging And Patient Activation, T. A. Hulslander Jan 2016

Narratives Of Aging And Patient Activation, T. A. Hulslander

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

I highlight the generally negative social discourse on aging in the United States, which is often characterized by themes of marginalization and stagnation, and I advocate for a more developmental view. I propose a conceptual framework of social constructionism to consider how the intersection between social discourse and personal narrative regarding aging might influence older adults’ patient activation; Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is an appropriate qualitative methodology through which to understand these relational dynamics. Key constructs are defined and evidentiary, social justice, and pragmatic rationales are provided. In a discussion of the application to clinical psychology I suggests that how …

Nature As Spiritual Lived Experience: How Five Christian Theologians Encounter The Spirit In And Through The Natural World, Brad A. Martell Jan 2016

Nature As Spiritual Lived Experience: How Five Christian Theologians Encounter The Spirit In And Through The Natural World, Brad A. Martell

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This qualitative study explored five Western Christian theologians’ religious lived experience of God’s Spirit in and through Nature. The hermeneutic phenomenological research method was utilized. Rich descriptions of lived experience were collected through 60-90 minute long phenomenological interviews which were recorded and transcribed verbatim into a text for analysis. Analysis included repeated readings of the text, identification of themes, and validation and/or correction of themes. Synthesis looked at the research as a whole and established implications and applications for Christian theology, particularly ecotheology. The study contributes to the literature of phenomenology and theology, calls for a place for lived experience …

Influencing Behavior During Planned Culture Change: A Participatory Action Research Case Study, Michael Valentine Jan 2016

Influencing Behavior During Planned Culture Change: A Participatory Action Research Case Study, Michael Valentine

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The study was conducted in a global, for-profit, advertising firm, which initiated a culture change effort focused culture change. The objective of the effort was to manage the negative impact of implicit bias (IB) in the workplace. This type of bias is known to influence behaviors and judgements (Amodio & Mendoza, 2010).It is hypothesized that if employees shift behavior to better understand and manage these biases in the basic work activities that are typical in any organization—like working on a team, making decisions related hiring, developing and promoting talent, and the numerous creative decisions that are typical of designing advertising campaigns—more inclusive …

The Deserving Patient: Blame, Dependency, And Impairment In Discourses Of Chronic Pain And Opioid Use, Maureen Nickerson Jan 2016

The Deserving Patient: Blame, Dependency, And Impairment In Discourses Of Chronic Pain And Opioid Use, Maureen Nickerson

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Negative stereotypes about people with chronic pain pose a barrier in the delivery of care; contribute to worsening symptoms of physical and psychological distress; and play a role in policy decisions that adversely affect patients and providers. Pain-care seekers may be accused of malingering, laziness, mental aberration, attention seeking, and drug seeking. The propagation of stigmatizing attitudes was explored in this Critical Discourse Analysis of online-reader-comments responding to a series of pain-care policy articles published by a large metropolitan newspaper. Results suggest that framing pain patients as legitimate and deserving can inadvertently reproduce the inequities advocates seek to redress. Ascriptions …

Radioactive Masculinity: How The Anxious Postcolonial Learnt To Love And Live In Fear Of The Nuclear Bomb, Dibyadyuti Roy Jan 2016

Radioactive Masculinity: How The Anxious Postcolonial Learnt To Love And Live In Fear Of The Nuclear Bomb, Dibyadyuti Roy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Radioactive Masculinity explores how the Cold War legacy, of nuclear weapons finding resonance in images of white maleness and masculinity, results in anxious hypermasculine performances. These discursive and physical masculine acts contingent on the symbolic and material power of nuclear weapons, I argue, represent radioactive masculinity, a form of hegemonic militarized masculinity, which is intrinsically linked to the concept of nationhood and sovereignty. This idealized masculinity is fluid and cannot be tangibly or materially realized, much like the constantly decaying radioactive bomb on which it is modeled. Through analyzing a wide range of artifacts from America and India, I show …

A Framing Analysis Of Latinos In The Facebook Pages Of News Organizations, Juliana Zapata Acosta Jan 2016

A Framing Analysis Of Latinos In The Facebook Pages Of News Organizations, Juliana Zapata Acosta

Master's Theses

This study of the Facebook pages of six legacy media organizations extended framing theory to apply to social media. In the study of 557 articles, four new frames and 10 new subframes were identified. The immigration frame and its two subframes, deportation and undocumented, dominated the coverage of Latinos during the period of the study. The politics frame was the second most dominant frame. This study updated the old data and found that no progress has been made, with the exception of a lesser use of the criminal frame. This improvement could be because the study included six months of …

Do Managers Really Guide Through The Fog? On The Challenges In Assessing The Causes Of Voluntary Disclosure, Travis Dyer, Mark Lang, Lorien Stice-Lawrence Jan 2016

Do Managers Really Guide Through The Fog? On The Challenges In Assessing The Causes Of Voluntary Disclosure, Travis Dyer, Mark Lang, Lorien Stice-Lawrence

Faculty Publications

Guay e tal. (2016) document that firms with longer and more complex 10-Ks provide  relatively more voluntary disclosure, which they interpret as evidence that managers use voluntary disclosure to mitigate negative effects of complex mandatory disclosure. We review the results of Guay et al. and focus on two main challenges to inferring causality: (1) the coincidence of upward over-time trends in annual report length, complexity, and voluntary disclosure, and (2) the potential for omitted correlated variables, such as changes in firm economics, to drive changes in 10-K textual characteristics and voluntary disclosure. While the results in Guay et al. are …

Using Unstructured And Qualitative Disclosures To Explain Accruals, Richard Frankel, Jared Jennings, Joshua A. Lee Jan 2016

Using Unstructured And Qualitative Disclosures To Explain Accruals, Richard Frankel, Jared Jennings, Joshua A. Lee

Faculty Publications

We examine the usefulness of support vector regressions (SVRs) in assessing the content of unstructured, qualitative disclosures by relating MD&A-based SVR-accrual estimates (MD&Aaccruals) to actual accruals. We find that MD&A accruals explain a statistically and economically significant portion of firm-level accruals and identify more persistent accruals. We find that the explanatory power of MD&A accruals is higher for more readable 10Ks, thereby providing evidence for the construct validity of the readability measures. To highlight the flexibility of the SVR method, we apply it to other dependent variables and disclosures. We find that MD&A-based cash-flow forecasts produced by SVR predict next …

Stories Of Smartness And Whiteness In School Pictures And Yearbooks, Eric Ruiz Bybee Jan 2016

Stories Of Smartness And Whiteness In School Pictures And Yearbooks, Eric Ruiz Bybee

Faculty Publications

This article explores the way that discourses of smartness and whiteness are produced and reproduced in schooling. Using an approach grounded in narra- tive research, I explore the convergences and contradictions between my own educational autobiography and the representations of schooling found in my school pictures and yearbooks. In my analysis, I argue that white supremacy played an important role in the construction of my own story of smartness throughout my primary and secondary schooling experiences. I also argue that yearbooks form powerful “artifacts of smartness” (Hatt, 2011, p. 448) that can be used to interpret and interrogate personal experiences …

Recovering With Acquired Apraxia Of Speech: The First 2 Years, Tyson G. Harmon, Katarina L. Haley, Jennifer N. Shafer, Adam Jacks

Faculty Publications

This study was intended to document speech recovery for 1 person with acquired apraxia of speech quantitatively and on the basis of her lived experience. The second author sustained a traumatic brain injury that resulted in acquired apraxia of speech. Over a 2-year period, she documented her recovery through 22 video-recorded monologues. We analyzed these monologues using a combination of auditory perceptual, acoustic, and qualitative methods. Recovery was evident for all quantitative variables examined. For speech sound production, the recovery was most prominent during the first 3 months, but slower improvement was evident for many months. Measures of speaking rate, …

The Effects Of Noise On Speech Movements In Young, Middle- Aged, And Older Adults. Speech, Language And Hearing, Christopher Dromey, Sarah Scott Jan 2016

The Effects Of Noise On Speech Movements In Young, Middle- Aged, And Older Adults. Speech, Language And Hearing, Christopher Dromey, Sarah Scott

Faculty Publications

People often talk in noisy environments, which can influence the effectiveness of communication. This study examined the impact of several types of noise on speech production by measuring lip movements during a sentence repetition task. Sixty participants in three age groups ranging from 20 to 70 repeated a sentence under five noise conditions (silence, one person reading aloud, two readers, six readers, and pink noise).A head-mounted strain gauge system tracked vertical lip movements. With the presentation of noise during a speaking task, the intensity increased due to the Lombard effect in all of the noise conditions. The utterance duration for …

Bermain-Main Dengan Kebenaran Sejarah: Kontestasi Kedudukan Dan Produksi Sosial Narasi Awal Mula, Geger Riyanto

Antropologi Indonesia

In common understanding, truth is inseparable from plausibility. This particular notion had influenced a strand of thinking in anthropology as well. This is evident from the inclination of some notable scholars to draw parallel comparisons between myth-making and scientific inquiry or depict their subject as a rational being predisposed toward overcoming contradictions. Reflecting on the myths of origin of the Butonese people in Seram Island and the notion of Indonesia as ancient civilization, I would like to propose that in social context the foundation of historical truths is never simply their coherence or plausibility but also their benefit in exalting …

Darek And Rantau: An Identity Through Diglossia, Hafiz Awlia Ramadhan Jan 2016

Darek And Rantau: An Identity Through Diglossia, Hafiz Awlia Ramadhan

Antropologi Indonesia

Through language, conceptions of self and the cultural knowledge of a society can be understood as interaction takes place. Observations and in-depth interviews were conducted to get descriptive results to explain the emic point of view about the dialects used and the dialects of other groups of people. The data was then analyzed with relevant theory and concepts, to get an understanding of the positions of dialects in communication events. By applying their cultural knowledge, peoples of Darek and Rantau, sub-groups in the larger Minangkabau ethnic group, in several contexts use dialects as indicators of another person’s identity. The difference …

Dinamika Pisang (Filipina-Sangihe) Di Perbatasan Indonesia-Filipina, Pristiwanto - Jan 2016

Dinamika Pisang (Filipina-Sangihe) Di Perbatasan Indonesia-Filipina, Pristiwanto -

Antropologi Indonesia

Indonesia citizens, who are resident in the southern Philippines is estimated at 8,000 inhabitants. They are commonly known as Pisang, an abbreviation of the Philippines-Sangihe or residents who have “blood ties” with Sangihe (Indonesia) which then had settled in the Philippines. In fact, their Philippine area residence does not become a barrier for the Pisang to remain in a relationship of kinship with the Indonesian Sangihe, through cross-border activity. This reality makes the issue of mobility become important because they do activities on the territory of two nation-states. The Pisang do trade, family visits and political activities even activities that …

Language, Thought, And Social Awareness: A Preliminary Anthropological Linguistic Investigation Of Time And Space In The Bima Language, Kamaludin Yusra Jan 2016

Language, Thought, And Social Awareness: A Preliminary Anthropological Linguistic Investigation Of Time And Space In The Bima Language, Kamaludin Yusra

Antropologi Indonesia

This article discusses the connection between language and thought processes and its implication towards social consciousness and attitudes. The framework is developed from various concepts of linguistic relativity particularly temporal and spatial deictic systems. Data were introspectively collected from the Bima native speakers selected based on dialectal variation, topography, and political geography and descriptively analyzed by identifying, classifying, describing and explaining the connection between various linguistic forms and spatio-temporal dimensions and social consciousness. The study finds that the concept of time in the language is not only semantically realized in adverbs of time but also morphologically represented in linguistic markers …

Youth Personhood @Crossroad: A Virtual Ethnography Of An Asymmetrical Relation Between Digital Natives And Digital Immigrants In Indonesia, Sofyan Ansori, Febrian -, Hafiz A. Ramadhan Jan 2016

Youth Personhood @Crossroad: A Virtual Ethnography Of An Asymmetrical Relation Between Digital Natives And Digital Immigrants In Indonesia, Sofyan Ansori, Febrian -, Hafiz A. Ramadhan

Antropologi Indonesia

Indonesian youth has developed into the largest internet user in this country. The development of technology drives the digital natives toward new challenges in identity attainment (personhood). It is common for young people to have a “storm and stress” phase in their life which is part of their identity attainment as one of the major and basic tasks of youth daily life. However, along with youth behavior in using internet, a generational problem emerges. The problematic behavior pattern includes taking dangerous selfies, sexting, cyberbullying, and promoting the radical activism. Through a research conducted with online observation and virtual ethnography, we …

Deep Level Lexical Features For Cross-Lingual Authorship Attribution, Marisa Llorens, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2016

Deep Level Lexical Features For Cross-Lingual Authorship Attribution, Marisa Llorens, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

Crosslingual document classification aims to classify documents written in different languages that share a common genre, topic or author. Knowledge-based methods and others based on machine translation deliver state-of-the-art classification accuracy, however because of their reliance on external resources, poorly resourced languages present a challenge for these type of methods. In this paper, we propose a novel set of language independent features that capture language use from a document at a deep level, using features that are intrinsic to the document. These features are based on vocabulary richness measurements and are text length independent and self-contained, meaning that no external …
