A Hybrid Behaviour Recognition And Intrusion Detection Method For Mobile Devices, Ashley Woodiss-Field Jan 2016

A Hybrid Behaviour Recognition And Intrusion Detection Method For Mobile Devices, Ashley Woodiss-Field

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Behaviour-based authorisation is a technique that assesses the user of a device for authenticity by comparing their activities to previously established behaviour profiles. Passwords and other point of entry authorisation techniques are often inadequate for protecting mobile device security as they only provide an initial barrier to usage and do not operate continuously. Behaviour-based authorisation continuously assesses user authorisation, using the device owner’s profile for authentication. This research improves upon behaviour-based authorisation performance by applying a hybridised intrusion detection method. The constituent intrusion detection methods that were applied include context-awareness and self-correction. Performance of a behaviour-based authorisation method can be …

Delayed Valuation: A Reanalysis Of Goal Features, “Upwards” Complementizer Agreement, And The Mechanics Of Case, Vicki Carstens

Articles

There are at least four opposing views on the directionality and configuration of Agree relations. In mainstream Minimalism, Agree is strictly downward “probing” (Chomsky 2000, 2001, Boskovic 2007, Epstein & Seely 2006), but some recent works argue instead that Agree always looks upwards (Zeijlstra 2012; Wurmbrand 2012). A third perspective takes agreement to follow from the Spec, head configuration (Koopman 2006; and see Chomsky’s 2013 labeling through shared prominent features), and under a fourth proposal, the directionality of Agree varies parametrically (Baker 2008). While each of these approaches has some empirical support, none achieves the strict conceptual necessity that is …

Bigger By The Dozens: The Prevalence Of Afro-Based Tradition In Battle Rap, Shingi Mavima Jan 2016

Bigger By The Dozens: The Prevalence Of Afro-Based Tradition In Battle Rap, Shingi Mavima

Journal of Hip Hop Studies

This paper interrogates the linguistic grounding of battle rap in Afro-based cultural practices, and the transformative power the understated art form possesses within the African American community. An integral part of hip-hop from the beginning, 'battling' has grown into a distinct subculture in recent years. Because of its oft-unmitigated rawness, it is often viewed as a lesser artistic form that embodies the worst of the violence, misogyny and other societal ills that hip-hop is accused of promoting. This paper argues that battle rap is not a corruption of Black culture: it is the modern incarnation of long-held oral, competitive, and …

Five-Factor Model As A Predictor For Spoken Dialog Systems, Teresa G. Carter Jan 2016

Five-Factor Model As A Predictor For Spoken Dialog Systems, Teresa G. Carter

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Human behavior varies widely as does the design of spoken dialog systems (SDS). The search for predictors to match a user’s preference and efficiency for a specific dialog interface type in an SDS was the focus of this research. By using personality as described by the Five-Factor Method (FFM) and the Wizard of Oz technique for delivering three system initiatives of the SDS, participants interacted with each of the SDS initiatives in scheduling an airline flight. The three system initiatives were constructed as strict system, which did not allow the user control of the interaction; mixed system, which allowed the …

Operationalizing Transformative Parent Engagement In Latino School Communities: A Case Study, Oscar Jiménez-Castellanos, Alberto M. Ochoa, Edward M. Olivos

Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)

The article examines a model for transformative parent engagement in predominantly Latino and ethnically diverse school communities. A case study illustrates the initial phases of the five-level process and the challenges of actualizing the parent engagement process. The author’s challenge commonly accepted boundaries of bicultural parent involvement. A case study provides a real-life example of a large urban school district that has introduced community school-based reform to create and apply the hopeful vision of what authentic and democratic parent engagement can become, and how parents can be transformative change agents for their children and their schools. The authors outline challenges …

This document is a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the Master of Arts degree in theatre. It is a dramaturgical analysis for William Gibson's play The Miracle Worker, providing a reference for directors and actors. The thesis explores the play's medical and pedagogical history in six chapters: the physiology and psychology of language acquisition as it pertains to sight and/or hearing impaired children, a pedagogical comparison of Samuel G. Howe and Annie Sullivan, a modern diagnosis of the fever that destroyed Helen Keller's vision and hearing, the 19th century pathology and treatment options for the disease of the eye …

Fragmented Places, Saulat Ajmal Jan 2016

Fragmented Places, Saulat Ajmal

Theses and Dissertations

My work is about an inner struggle, which stems from the shifting nature of my own identity being constantly displaced and re-imagined. My paintings and performances are propositions for a utopic world. They offer a place for identity to rest and are defined through ritualistic movements, which are inescapably mine. While I work in several mediums including paintings, performance, installation and sculpture, this thesis paper is an exploration of the work I have produced specifically over the last six months

Comparative Study Between Direct Load Control And Fuzzy Logic Control Based Demand Response, Chittesh Veni Chandran, Malabika Basu, Keith Sunderland Jan 2016

Comparative Study Between Direct Load Control And Fuzzy Logic Control Based Demand Response, Chittesh Veni Chandran, Malabika Basu, Keith Sunderland

Conference papers

Demand response (DR), as part of Demand side management (DSM), is a method that modifies consumer side energy consumption. By actively controlling the time associated with electricity consumption, both energy and economic efficiencies are increased. There is however, depending on the algorithm employed, potential for consumer comfort levels to be adversely affected. Generally direct load (Boolean logic) control is employed, which solely considers demand reduction and not customer comfort. In comparison, fuzzy logic based programs can consider non-deterministic inputs such as consumer comfort level with ease and simplicity. This paper considers the evolution of DR through a comparison of the …

Differential Effects Of Discrete Positive Emotions On Give-Some And Take-Some Social Dilemmas, Caitlin F. O'Neill Jan 2016

Differential Effects Of Discrete Positive Emotions On Give-Some And Take-Some Social Dilemmas, Caitlin F. O'Neill

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Building upon the literature regarding the unique effects of distinct negative emotions on decision making, the current thesis investigates the differential effects of distinct positive emotions (i.e., pride, elevation, and amusement) on giving and taking behaviors in social dilemmas. Results of a pilot and experimental studies reveal autobiographical recalls successfully elicited distinct positive emotions, but the effects were generally inconsistent or null in predicting prosocial acts. Supplementary analyses reveal a potential methodological confound, with significant findings more likely to emerge when emotions were measured after as opposed to before the targeted dilemmas. Specifically, elevation led to significantly higher levels of …

Calling An End To Culling: Predictive Coding And The New Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, Stephanie Serhan Jan 2016

Calling An End To Culling: Predictive Coding And The New Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, Stephanie Serhan

Law Student Publications

This paper examines the impact of the most recent amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure on the current split between courts about whether predictive coding should be applied at the outset or to a set of keyword-culled documents. Since the new Rules explicitly implement the concept of proportionality and a new set of standards in Rule 26, I argue that applying predictive coding at the outset is more compliant with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Part II will explain the difference in timing between applying predictive coding after keyword culling or prior to it, and discuss the …

Use Of Student Created Video Podcasts To Promote Foreign Language Grammar Acquisition In Middle School, Sergio Parra Jan 2016

Use Of Student Created Video Podcasts To Promote Foreign Language Grammar Acquisition In Middle School, Sergio Parra

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The use of video podcasts in education has emerged as a phenomenon that has gained a considerable amount of attention over the last few years. Although video podcasting is becoming a well-established technology in higher education, new multimedia instructional strategies such as student-created video podcasts in grades K-12 are under-researched.

The study investigated the effects of video podcasts created by students to promote foreign language grammar acquisition at the middle school level and find how students described such experience. The current investigation was conducted by using the explanatory sequential design, which is a mixed methods research design that occurs in …

Ce 575 Syllabus: Addictions Counseling Multicultural Concerns, Mitch Moore Jan 2016

Ce 575 Syllabus: Addictions Counseling Multicultural Concerns, Mitch Moore

Counselor Education Syllabi

This course introduces students to multicultural aspects of chemical dependency. Multiculturalism is an important concept to examine in relation to addictions counseling as our clients’ age, race, gender identity, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, or disability status can impact the course of addiction or treatment. In this course, students will examine cultural influences as they converge with the substance use and co-occurring disorders. Developing cultural competence in addictions counseling is emphasized. Process addictions (e.g., gambling) also will be examined through a multicultural lens.

In this article, I want to summarize the broader discussion about literary texts in the undergraduate curriculum for the more commonly taught languages, consider the nature of Russian undergraduate programs in light of that discussion, and then suggest a way that upper-division Russian classes can work with literary texts through the effective deployment of scaffolding in classroom tasks.

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish (Part I), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez Jan 2016

A Diachronic Approach To The Old Spanish Sibilant Merger And Its Impact On Trans-Atlantic Spanish (Part I), Eva NúÑEz-MéNdez

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

The evolution of the medieval sibilant phonetic system is indispensable in understanding how original Castilian expanded and evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. At the same time, it helps to distinguish varieties such as Andalusian Spanish, trans-Atlantic Spanish, and Judeo-Spanish, which in many ways constitutes proof of all the diachronic processes happening during and after the late medieval period. The sibilant merger and its resulting graphic confusion represent a crucial chapter in the development of Spanish. This study offers an extensive overview of the evidence, chrono- logy, dialectal divergence, theories of causation, and phonetic background of this merger. Condensing …

Mathematical Foundations Of Sentiment Classification : A Probabilistic Approach, Syed Shahzad Raza Jan 2016

Mathematical Foundations Of Sentiment Classification : A Probabilistic Approach, Syed Shahzad Raza

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This thesis is an introduction to the mathematical formalization of sentiment classification. It presents two popular probabilistic machine learning models to classify tweets downloaded from Twitter during the US Election Period, 2016. The thesis analyses accuracy of the two classification algorithms used. Namely, Multinomial Naïve Bayes and Bernoulli Naïve Bayes algorithms. Supervised learning approaches implemented in this thesis use approximately 600 manually labeled tweets containing information regarding the US presidential candidates. It is shown with 80% accuracy that majority of twitter users spoke in favor of Donald Trump before and after the presidential election through their tweets. We also discuss …

"There Is So Much You Can't Translate" : English Translation Of Chinese Classic Poetry In Twentieth Century America, Ahui Yu Jan 2016

"There Is So Much You Can't Translate" : English Translation Of Chinese Classic Poetry In Twentieth Century America, Ahui Yu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although the translation of Chinese texts by modernist poets has been acknowledged by critics, the implications of this cultural exchange between China and America has not generated substantial critical study. Using Ludwig Wittgenstein’s theory of language, this thesis examines this cultural dialogue through the work of Ernest Fenollosa, Ezra Pound and Kenneth Rexroth. Restoring Fenollosa’s pioneering role, a chapter of this thesis uncovers his unfinished project of a fusion of East and West, and exposes his imperialist and nationalist attitudes that later result in appropriation. Reexamining Pound’s engagement with Chinese texts throughout his career, another chapter of this thesis argues …

The Dialectics Of Reading : Fredric Jameson And Politics Of Interpretation, Robert Henri Faivre Jan 2016

The Dialectics Of Reading : Fredric Jameson And Politics Of Interpretation, Robert Henri Faivre

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Fredric Jameson’s theory and practice of reading, in the name of critical interventions into the dominant hermeneutics in literary and cultural texts, have limited transformative readings and provided interpretive alibis, though an ever-receding utopian writerly space, for cultural reform within capitalism. Deploying a materialist analytics, The Dialectics of Reading draws out Jameson’s interpretive ambivalence, unlayers its class interests and demonstrates how in Jameson’s interpretations—from his Sartre: Origins of Style to An American Utopia: Dual Power and the Universal Army—the dominant material relationships are grasped as dialectical reading. In a detailed interpretation of his interpretation of “Walmart,” The Dialectics of Reading …

A Kind Of Peace : The Real World Of Firearms Owners, Zachary Miner Jan 2016

A Kind Of Peace : The Real World Of Firearms Owners, Zachary Miner

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation addresses the topics of stigma and legal consciousness through close examination of the attitudes and life experiences of legal gun owners in upstate New York. Based in the symbolic interactionist tradition, and using a grounded theory approach, this project explores data gathered from participant-observation sessions, and semi-structured interviews with 37 participants. Analysis of this data reveals that respondents highlight safety, responsibility, skillful operation, and fun as the primary values they associate with the ownership and use of firearms. Additionally, in a departure from previous research in this area, respondents reported few individual experiences of social stigma, and engage …
