Stewarding Our Mountains: A Program Evaluation Of Place-Based Service Learning On The Appalachian Trail, Bonnie Jean Harvey Jan 2016

Stewarding Our Mountains: A Program Evaluation Of Place-Based Service Learning On The Appalachian Trail, Bonnie Jean Harvey

Anthropology Theses

Appalachians’ relationships with the environment alter over time due to political, economic, and ecological factors. These changing relationships, for instance rural agrarian livelihoods shifting to urban contexts, can influence how an individual perceives personal responsibility in regional environmental stewardship, such as caring for and preserving local ecology. Observing that recent shifts resulted in less perceived youth stewardship for the Appalachian Trail (AT), the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) created the Trail to Every Classroom (TTEC) program in 2006. The TTEC program attempts to foster stewardship through the practice of place-based service learning - a diversification of education where youth learn through …

Third Person References: Forms And Functions In Two Spoken Genres Of Spanish, Jenny Dumont Jan 2016

Third Person References: Forms And Functions In Two Spoken Genres Of Spanish, Jenny Dumont

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

This volume, a case study on the grammar of third person references in two genres of spoken Ecuadorian Spanish, examines from a discourse-analytic perspective how genre affects linguistic patterns and how researchers can look for and interpret genre effects. This marks a timely contribution to corpus linguistics, as many linguists are choosing to work with empirical data. Corpus based approaches have many advantages and are useful in the comparison of different languages as well as varieties of the same language, but what is often overlooked in such comparisons is the genre of language under examination. As this case study shows, …

Promoting Metacognitive Thought Through Response To Low-Stakes Reflective Writing, Jenae Cohn, Mary Stewart Jan 2016

Promoting Metacognitive Thought Through Response To Low-Stakes Reflective Writing, Jenae Cohn, Mary Stewart

Journal of Response to Writing

Metacognition is a typical learning outcome in composition courses, but providing feedback on low-stakes reflective writing and assessing highstakes reflective writing are complex tasks that warrant more attention in the literature. Consequently, this article explores how the assignment of and response to low-stakes reflective writing can provide effective scaffolding to higher-stakes reflective writing tasks. We present an example of our strategy for response through one instructor’s experience with responding to her first-year composition student’s low-stakes reflective writing. Ultimately, we call for more research on responding to reflective writing that will ensure the valid and reliable assessment of metacognition in composition …

Editor’S Introduction, Dana R. Ferris Jan 2016

Editor’S Introduction, Dana R. Ferris

Journal of Response to Writing

This issue completes the second volume year of JRW. It is hard to believe how quickly the two years have gone by, and we are gratified with the excellent work that authors have shared with us and with the positive response from readers. This issue has five papers—two research articles, two teaching articles, and a book review—which notably discuss response topics from a broad range of pedagogical contexts. With the publication of Magda Tigchelaar’s article, “The Impact of Peer Review on Writing Development in French as a Foreign Language,” we are happy to extend our discussions of response to writing …

The Meaning Of Law, 49 J. Marshall L. Rev. 1077 (2016), Anuj Puri Jan 2016

The Meaning Of Law, 49 J. Marshall L. Rev. 1077 (2016), Anuj Puri

UIC Law Review

Human beings intrinsically seek meaning. We readily accept and absorb a proposition or even a legal stipulation, if it is meaningful. This human trait coupled with law’s ability to create, select and infuse meaning ensures that in case of conflict between rights, those rights that are perceived to be ‘more meaningful’ triumph over those that are viewed to be less so. Hence, it is important to study the relationship between meaning and law and its impact on rights and identity of an individual. In order to do so, we need to address the following questions: What is the meaning of …

Boxed In: Reclassification Of Arab Americans On The U.S. Census As Progress Or Peril, Khaled A. Beydoun Jan 2016

Boxed In: Reclassification Of Arab Americans On The U.S. Census As Progress Or Peril, Khaled A. Beydoun

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

The United States Bureau of the Census has proposed a standalone “Middle Eastern or North African” (“MENA”) box for the 2020 census. Deemed white by law since 1944, the 2020 census may afford Arab Americans the unprecedented opportunity to identify as MENA, and nonwhite—the latter standing as a per se designation that conflicts with federal and local surveillance, profiling, and policing of Arab Americans during the protracted “War on Terror.” Since the 1980s, Arab American organizations have lobbied the Census Bureau to recognize Arab Americans as a distinct demographic. These efforts proved futile, until after the September 11th terrorist attacks, …

Changing Standards Of Review, Jeffrey C. Dobbins Jan 2016

Changing Standards Of Review, Jeffrey C. Dobbins

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

Do standards of review matter? On the one hand, judges insist that they do, and appellate practitioners know that they ignore standards of review at their peril. On the other hand, it is not unusual to find judges and academics who concede that there is not much difference between the many standards of review, and that the articulation of the standard may not make much of a difference in reversal rates.

To test the question, researchers would ideally take a set of cases, have a court decide them under one standard of review, and then, while avoiding any bias from …

The intent is to highlight a distinction between the categories of a more generalized online consumer and an online apparel consumer, with particular attention on consumer-type responses to, and interaction with, hedonic atmosphere attributes as well as electronic word of mouth.

El Rol De La Inmersión En La Producción Del Futuro Del Subjuntivo En Portugués, Evelin Pegoraro Jan 2016

El Rol De La Inmersión En La Producción Del Futuro Del Subjuntivo En Portugués, Evelin Pegoraro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Portuguese Future Subjunctive (FS) is frequently studied since out of all modern romance languages, this verbal tense and mood is regularly maintained only in Portuguese. Moreover, variation and alternation occur in the use of the FS by the speakers of the language through a substitution of the irregular inflections of the FS by the regular inflections of the Personal Infinitive (IP). The only difference between the FS and the IP is found in the irregular verbs of the FS, and these are usually "regularized" by Portuguese speakers. Since the regular verbs of the FS are identical to the IP, …

Gendered Virtue: A Study Of Its Meaning And Evolution In Early Modern France, Mariela Saad Jan 2016

Gendered Virtue: A Study Of Its Meaning And Evolution In Early Modern France, Mariela Saad

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Virtue in early modern France was a broad concept considered by clergymen, philosophers, and moralists as an instrument for measuring and implementing human ethics. This unprecedented research seeks to track the development of the notion of virtue from a gendered and dichotomous notion to a unique and undivided term. The word virtue is constantly present in French texts such as manuels de conduite1 , since the medieval period. Thus, it can be regarded as one of the most significant concepts defining genders in Western civilization. However, it is difficult for modern readers to grasp the complexity of the debate unless …

The Agent Across The Border: "Russia" And "Ukraine" As Actors In The News, 2013-2015, Abbey L. Thomas Jan 2016

The Agent Across The Border: "Russia" And "Ukraine" As Actors In The News, 2013-2015, Abbey L. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This study examines how two media sources—one Russian and one Ukrainian—portray Russia and Ukraine before, during, and after the EuroMaidan crisis in Ukraine. Russian-language texts posted between January 2013 and December 2015 on the sites Ukranews.com (a Ukrainian news outlet) and TASS.ru (Russian) were organized in a corpus of over 20,000,000 words. This study analyzes the nouns “Россия” (“Russia”) and “Украина” (“Ukraine”) according to the verbal predicates that attach to either noun. The results demonstrate predictable variation in the agency of the two entities in response to cultural events and contexts.

The analysis of the corpus data operationalizes a combined …

The Construction Of Original Public Meaning, Jack M. Balkin Jan 2016

The Construction Of Original Public Meaning, Jack M. Balkin

Constitutional Commentary, Vols 1–36 (1984–2022)

Christina Mulligan, Michael Douma, Hans Lind and Brian Quinn have recently shown that during the ratification of the Constitution in 1787-1788, German and Dutch translations of the Constitution were distributed to non-English speakers in the crucial states of Pennsylvania and New York. These translations differ from the English text in interesting and important ways. As a result, English speakers may have understood the proposed Constitution in one way, while non-English speakers may have understood it quite differently. This essay uses this example to show why original public meaning is not a set of facts that lawyers simply discover and report. Rather, …

Founding-Era Translations Of The U.S. Constitution, Christina Mulligan, Michael Douma, Hans Lind, Brian Quinn Jan 2016

Founding-Era Translations Of The U.S. Constitution, Christina Mulligan, Michael Douma, Hans Lind, Brian Quinn

Constitutional Commentary, Vols 1–36 (1984–2022)

Before its ratification, the United States Constitution was translated into German and Dutch for the German- and Dutch-speaking populations of Pennsylvania and New York. Although copies of both the German- and Dutch-language translations have been preserved, they have largely escaped analysis — and public awareness — until now. This paper provides historical context for these translations and analyzes how they might aid our interpretation of the U.S. Constitution in the present day. Supplemental to this article is an appendix containing the German and Dutch translations, as well as extensive commentary on the translations, available at https://ssrn.com/abstract=2486282.

The Perception Of Creaky Voice: Does Speaker Gender Affect Our Judgments?, Kaitlyn E. Lee Jan 2016

The Perception Of Creaky Voice: Does Speaker Gender Affect Our Judgments?, Kaitlyn E. Lee

Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics

This study focuses on the phonetics of creaky voice saliency and the perceptual sociolinguistic indexes that are evoked during creaky voice use. This study consists of two experiments: the first a listener judgment based Likert scale, the second an AXB study. The first experiment used modal and creaky voice statement-of-fact tokens to determine whether the speaker is or isn’t x characteristic (intelligent, feminine, educated, masculine, hesitant, and confident). This study found that both male and female speakers were found to be less intelligent, less educated, less feminine, more masculine, less confident, and more hesitant when using creaky voice phonation as …

Hebrew And Computer-Mediated Communication: The Effects Of A Language Manipulation On Perception, Identity, And Preservation, Tamar Nir Jan 2016

Hebrew And Computer-Mediated Communication: The Effects Of A Language Manipulation On Perception, Identity, And Preservation, Tamar Nir

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This study aimed to explore the ways in which Hebrew is currently being manipulated online through a linguistic deviation called Fakatsa. In this study, participants were asked to rate random statements of frivolous or serious topics in either standard grammatical Hebrew or Fakatsa Hebrew conditions on specific judgment values. It was hypothesized that participants would rate the Fakatsa writer negatively on certain characteristics, such as intelligence, education, religiosity, and nationalism and positively on other characteristics, such as femininity and creativity. Twenty-four participants completed this experiment. Results showed that participants responded as expected for certain negative attributes typical of Fakatsa and …

Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm Jan 2016

Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm

The Coastal Review

This empirical study explores the facilitation of lexical acquisition and retention through an incidental experiment examining the effect of Involvement Load on Italian vocabulary growth among beginner learners. The experiment, with a pre-test/post-test design investigates the facilitative effects of elaborate processing on L2 lexical acquisition and retention. Participants in sections of the same first-year Italian course were divided into one of five groups consisting of a Control Group and four Treatment groups. Treatment groups were divided based on level of Involvement (Laufer & Hulstijn, 2001) such that some groups processed target words elaborately (Craik, 2002; Lockhart, 2002) through vocabulary exercises …

Constructing Identity Painting, Mythos And Persona, Danielle Dygert Jan 2016

Constructing Identity Painting, Mythos And Persona, Danielle Dygert

Theses & ETDs

The physical manifestation of persona can be seen as morphologies of man, flora, and fauna from Homer’s human animal hybrid characters acted out during ancient cult rituals to contemporary fantasy, comic and game art characters acted out by Cosplayers. This thesis consists of a series of oil paintings, shaped by Homer’s coming-of-age motif and my perception of sisterhood, as I am one of seven sisters. Sisterhood, understood though the Pleiade myth, is both autonomous and mutual. Thesomophoria, Kathos and Anodos, a seven panel cycle, embodies the complexities of identity played out within an autonomous mythscape. This thesis offers an alternative …

Alexithymia And Psychological Defenses: A Meta-Analysis, Madeline A. Huffstickler Jan 2016

Alexithymia And Psychological Defenses: A Meta-Analysis, Madeline A. Huffstickler

Theses & ETDs

A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the association between alexithymia and psychological defensiveness, and to assess the moderating influence of the psychological maturity reflected in the defense type indexed by each effect size included in the analyses. An exhaustive search of the literature using database, forwards, and backwards searches yielded a total sample of 22 studies that contributed 60 independent effect sizes. Analyses using both fixed-effects and random-effects models obtained moderate positive associations between alexithymia and overall defensiveness as well as neurotic defenses, a strong positive association for immature defenses, and a moderate negative association for mature defenses. These findings …

Racialized Intimacy In Afrofuturism, Nasib Mcintosh Jan 2016

Racialized Intimacy In Afrofuturism, Nasib Mcintosh

Theses & ETDs

This thesis analyzes the representations of racialized intimacy in two Afrofuturistic works: “The Comet” written by W.E.B Du Bois and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine created by Michel Piller and Rick Berman. Afrofuturism is both a genre of black cultural production and an analytical framework for critiquing discourses about the future. Afrofuturistic works and analyses interrogate and critique the construction of contemporary racial identities by envisioning how racialized subjects might function in imagined futures. The works I analyze in this thesis offer critiques and revisions of dominant discourses about interracial intimacy in their respective time periods as well as the …

La Adquisición De Prestigio De Características No Estándares: El Caso De La Elisión De /-D-/ En El Andaluz, Carmen Ruiz-Sánchez Jan 2016

La Adquisición De Prestigio De Características No Estándares: El Caso De La Elisión De /-D-/ En El Andaluz, Carmen Ruiz-Sánchez

The Coastal Review

Most Andalusian characteristics lack overt prestige at the national level. However, Hernández-Campoy argues that adoption of non-standard features, like deletion of /-d-/, is taking place in standard Castilian areas, which entails a subsequent change in prestige. This study investigates the social manifestation of /-d-/ deletion in Alcalá de Guadaíra (Seville). The results indicate that the deleted variant is widespread in all the social groups. The phenomenon predominates among younger speakers, which could indicate that this process, already noted in the 16th century, is still vigorous and could indeed be acquiring overt prestige.

Making Your Traditional Text Work: Input, Scaffolding And Communication, Andrew J. Demil Jan 2016

Making Your Traditional Text Work: Input, Scaffolding And Communication, Andrew J. Demil

The Coastal Review

Second Language Acquisition (SLA) studies provide evidence that comprehension activities that involve meaningful language production and communication promote language acquisition more effectively than mechanical drills. Recent studies review the state of foreign language textbooks and demonstrate that the majority of foreign language textbooks do not follow SLA research. This article provides ways that a second language instructor can use a traditional text to help lead to meaningful language instruction.
